For Lex's question about time signatures, she is describing both polymeters and polyrhythms. Polymeters are when the time signature changes, and yes this song is one of the best examples of that as it has dozens of meter changes. The main riff that she alluded to constantly switches between 5/8 and 7/8 (though you could technically rewrite that as 12, it doesn't really feel like the song is in 12 so most people wouldn't do that), but there are some others in there as well. The other thing is polyrhythm, which is when they are playing multiple time signatures over each other at the same time. Tool does this a lot, and there are some parts of this song that do it as well like the ending breakdown when he sings "between supposed lovers" where the drums go to 4/4 while the guitars stay in that weird 5/8-7/8, but that is not what is going on in the main riff that she hummed.

One bar of 5/8 (one Duple, one Triple) then one bar of 3/4 (three Duples) is how I would write it out. Quarter, Quarter, Eighth | Quarter, Quarter, Quarter. I suppose it could be 11/8 but why? lol. This band is a MUST SEE live show. When they come out on stage an entirely different atmosphere takes over the building/stadium. The visuals are incredible, they play amazingly, song composition is great. Every time I've seen them I just get this feeling like "oh man, I'm really just sitting in on these 4 great musicians jamming their weird songs." That's not really a great description, but the 30+ other bands I've seen live don't have the same atmosphere. It's weird. It could also be the mushrooms though 🙃 people will look back on Tool in 30 years like people look back on Pink Floyd or Zeppelin. There are parts of TooL songs where Danny is playing in two different time signatures then Justin and Maynard are in a different time from Danny and Adam all the while in a different time as well. @jacksmith44602 жыл бұрын
09:20, I have been a musician for 25+ years and been a Tool fan for almost as long, they are doing both. There are some points where they are blending different timings, so a pattern of 3 over 4 just as an example (when Lex asks about 2 different tracks at the same time, not 2 different tracks, but 2 different timings), but also The base timing of this track is an "odd Meter" meaning an odd number of beats, which is what gives it a more complex feel , and it is harder to play such timings than a straight 4 or 2 beat pattern, and they shift from different patterns and timings, so from a 3 beat int a 4 beat and then a 5 beat cycle, just to make up an example, But in Tools case they sometimes add further levels with patterns that go over several cycles, so the drummer and bass are playing a 4 beat rhythm, but the drummer might be playing around his toms in a 12 beat cycle that take 3 of the usual 4 beats to complete (12 /3 = 4 and the drums and bass are playing a 4 beat rhythm) Its all mathematical in a way. In fact Tool (and Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan, and Botch, and Converge all) spearheaded "Math Metal" in mid 90's to early 00's.. Math metal is a type of metal that varies a lot in sound but the common themes are these mathematical style rhythm patterns and melodies that fit them. This style or elements of it, have become a HUGE part of modern metal and Heavy guitar music and the bands I have mentioned were the Pioneers of it, and all brilliant in there on right, and all very very different. There are now hundreds if not thousands of bands and musical projects that have at least some in not many of these elements in that were inspired by teh bands I listed and Tool

These songs are not 15 minute wonders. They are masterpieces - everything is purposeful and perfect. From the single open D at the end of the bass intro that frames the whole song to the lyrics. 3 words - "Between Supposed Lovers" - is just the most perfectly efficient way to summarize that "how did we get to this point" feeling of a crumbling relationship. Yes, this song changes time signatures a LOT. In the sequence you are talking about, they are basically flipping back and forth from 5/8 and 7/8. So the bass for example is playing two extra notes in the same time frame, every other time. (you don't always have to play extra notes, but in this case he is) This kind of creates that layered feeling and slight Yo-Yo effect, which makes it feel like the song is speeding up and slowing down rapidly over and over again.

YES 😂😂🤣🤣. This is my Favorite Tool Song. This song has a very intriguing time signature. The verses can be counted as 12/8 (12 eighth-note beats to a measure) but it is actually split up into recurring measures of 5/8 (5 eighth-note beats to a measure) and 7/8 (7 eighth-note beats to a measure). In this way, the standard 12/8 time signature is split into two parts, a "Schism" thus the theme of the music matches the theme of the lyrics. 😁❤🤘

Music has a time signature. Pop songs and straight rock songs and most country is in 4/4 or 4 beats per measure which makes it easy to tap our feet, it’s a simple groove. This song is alternating between odd time signatures. The song begins with two bars of 5/4, followed by one bar of 4/4, followed by bars of alternating 5/8 and 7/8, until the first interlude, which consists of alternating bars of 6/8 and 7/8.

You're right lex, Tool live is one of the greatest experiences

Ha, excellent reaction from Lex, and I reckon Brad would have gone back to this one after the cameras were off. Beautiful lyrics, powerful and succinct.

Just saw Tool live in Sacramento this weekend. They're great. I was sad though that they didn't play almost any of their most popular mainstream songs but I could still appreciate the visuals and musical art.

Brad is such a damn rock. People only watch these videos for Lex's reaction, let's be honest lol.
@lustalgia...2 жыл бұрын
used to feel the same but he’s really trying to understand on definitely a more effort based comprehension but it’s clearly two different personalities connecting ultimately to what is music. biased but beautiful. i dig how he’s reading from left to right and it’s sorta refreshing. Brad takes in that punk rock from Cali like a natural though i must say! Brad would dig some more Tony Hawk punk like unwritten Law or some more mainstream Blink? dude ranch era

@@lustalgia... Facts! The combo is what I like the best from this channel, even though I can personally relate to the emotive and candid nature of Lex's reaction, I still very much identify with Brad's urge to understand the lyrics on a deeper level. I tend to be more like Lex on a first listen and more like Brad on the subsequent listens.
@ElonRogan2 жыл бұрын
True. I guess I can just relate to Lex more, how she more emotional with music. I guess I just don't understand how someone can literally not move a muscle while listening to tool.. lol

@@ElonRogan Fair! That's why I usually go all furrowed brow analytical on subsequent listens after I've "felt" it.

@@ElonRogan dude i’m totally the same and i play music myself. I can listen to a band like CONVERGE and can’t understand a single word over the aggressive, and to some harsh vox but at the shows and in my car, i’m pumped and ready to do a dive ha! Pink Floyd seems to be the one band and rightfully so that even Brad just soaks in and lex as well. I just see his heart is in the material but probably not as keen to letting it all go at a metal show or just shutting down the thought process for music sake ha

Discovered you two when your video going to the Tool concert was in my recommendations. Decided to watch this, as I was watching i was thinking Lex is getting into it and Brad is lost in it. Then I read the description.... Love your videos!

Tool is touring right now. You should catch a show as I don’t imagine they’ll be touring too much longer. And yes, their time signatures are wild.
@christoffsimply31792 жыл бұрын
95+ percent of all music is written in common (or standard) timing. You can easily click consistently to the same pattern like counting to 4 over and over. Tool starts with odd timings that specifically breaks that smooth consistency (counting to 5 then 7 in this song). Lots of artists can do these things, but when they do, it usually sounds intentionally complex and noticeable. However, these guys are so good with their instruments they smooth it back out to sound very approachable. Collectively it results in your brain not fully following the timing of the song but feeling like it's still very smooth and planned out. Then they add moody minor key, Maynard's "Gregorian chant" style voice and brilliant lyrics plus of course Danny killing it on drums and Justin playing interesting and complex bass lines. Yeah, once in a lifetime band these guys. So glad you keep reacting to them! Thank you.

I generally don't recommend Tool's official videos for first time listeners - WAY too distracting. They are so trippy you usually have to either focus on the music or the video, but can't do both, and the focus needs to be on the music for a first time listener. They are weird enough sometimes to be off-putting also. It would be a shame to have the experience ruined because you didn't appreciate the video.

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it. This tells you the basis of the entire song. Its hidden and only those who know will realize the true meaning he was trying to express

Gotta see them live! One of my favorite bands and actually my mothers favorite band ever, she always wanted to go see them live and I’ve always promised her I’d take her one day, so I got her and I tickets to go see them for her birthday and we saw them in January of 2020, amazing show and amazing crowd, the best concert I’ve ever seen, it was the weekend after Kobe Bryant and his daughter tragically passed away and at one point Danny Carey did a drum solo wearing a Kobe jersey with all purple and gold stage lights, it was incredible, mixed crowd and everyone was very pleasant!
