I swear I'm like a snail compared to how fast the audience solved the first, easy, puzzles - but at the same time I'm like an eagle compared to how inaccurate they "solved" the harder puzzles. They be weird.

Maybe you solve these things relatively slow but see very much. In the first few, you solve them slow, and there is not much to see, and later on there will be more to see, so in the same time you see much more.

5:44 This puzzle has me confused. I saw all the options, but the move order made a huge difference to the outcome. I can't seem to see ahead deep enough to figure that problem out, without using a separate board to track the moves... Does that limit me forever at 1600, or is there a way to improve the depth of my calculations?

Just be very patient, some puzzles might take hours, but explore all possibilities, triple check, evaluate, look all over the board, recognize opponents threats, search for targets, loose pieces, etc. If you fail a puzzle, dwell on what have you missed and how could have you spotted the solution. Even if you solve it correctly, take some time to let the reasoning behind the solution sink in. Sometimes it comes down to just crunching the numbers. But often in easier (and some harder) puzzles there are patterns to be found. Perhaps you could benefit from the Practice option on Lichess, by learning these patterns. Good luck :)

My problem being a beginner is that these sorts of set ups and variations never seem to occur with unskilled opponents. They tend to play wild nonsense that feels good rather than following any sort of logic. It's difficult to learn anything because your opponents aren't followed the 'accepted' moves. And since these sorts of variations aren't covered by IM's for example, I don't feel like my game improves at all and I just lose game after game because I don't know how to respond to my opponents silliness.
@warhag
@warhag 6 жыл бұрын
kahwigulum use the computer analysis and find the first move that lost you the advantage and remember that one. after some time you will see a pattern or you find many blunders that you didnt punish after doing that you will just laugh and demolish people

You need to be a bit more honest to yourself. If your opponents are playing silly moves, you should be crushing them. If you can’t refute those silly moves it simply means that your playing strength is too low to refute the move.

8.13 after Re2 if white plays Bc1 and Bf2+, there is kf1 attacking the black rook. How does black win then?
@rony5872
@rony5872 6 жыл бұрын
After Re2,if bc1 then the threat is be4 with the rook and bishop converting on g2 with no efficient way to stop it, there is no mate or anything it’s just a pawn but white has so much play to go for, a far better position. That’s why the computer prefers to sac the exchange after re2 to prevent be4 by black. I feel like eric completely missed kf1 after bf2+
@sussymi
@sussymi 6 жыл бұрын
Fley Thanks for pointing out that be4 leads to a strong position for black. So after be4 if white makes a useless move like a3, then Rxg2+ kf1 I guess there is rh2, threatening rh1+. So instead of a3, maybe better for white is Rc4, Rxg2+ Kf1 Bf3 Rd3 Rf2+ Kg1 Be2 Rd2 Rf1+ Kg2 Bxc4 bxc4 Rxc1
@rony5872
@rony5872 6 жыл бұрын
Yes a3, is just a useless move and Rh2 threatening rh1+ is a possible follow up. But in the other line u gave there is a slight mistake:Rc4 R×g2+ Kf1 black cant play here bf3 because his other bishop on h4 would be hanging so if bf3 white plays R×h4 and black here cant play b×d1 because black's rook is hanging on g2 the king would simply take it. After Rc4 the best defense for black is bringing his other rook to e8 to defend the bishop on e4, if white sacs the exchange on e4 and plays r×e4 then u must play Rf2+ fist defending this way ur rook on the 2nd, kg2 and only then u can play r×e4 taking back the rook
@sussymi
@sussymi 6 жыл бұрын
Fley hmm isn't there a white pawn on f4 preventing Rxh4? But I agree that bringing in the other rook is still very good for black.

35:13, we could have taken the White's bishop by our bishop, bishop d4×C5 , and attacking their rook, black queen wouldn't capture it for obvious reasons and then once the black moves his rook, we can can play d6 and pin the queen to rook and the queen wouldn't be able to take our bishop because our rook is supporting it

@ashwin3233 6 жыл бұрын
JJoeSilver when we capture the bishop if the opponent capture the queen, we can just take his rook or pin the queen to the rook, and the pawn structure of black would be bad and king is kinda exposed, we are up a bishop and a rook and his king side pawn structure is spoiled while he is up a queen.

It's not about breaking anything. It's about keeping it there and that's the challenge. I had 2740 and lost 500-700 points. Ever since I've been anywhere between 2300-2500 after solving more than 32,000 puzzles. Getting back to 2700+ seems impossible due to all the blunders. Everybody climbs fast in the begging. But after thousands of puzzles it's a completely different thing.

I kind of don't like that a lot of points get deducted for making a small mistake. Your move might be a good move which could still give you advantage but still if it's not the best you lose points like mad. You get like 5-6points for solving a puzzle and you solve one wrong and you lose something like 15 points. This sucks

@@MrSupernova111 how long have you been playing chess? I like puzzles because I like the mental calculation part of chess. I won't ever become a very good player as I'm already 24 y/o, there are so many things to memorise and there are people who basically have interlizaed this stuff as a second language since they were kids. Still, i can use chess to train my mind, everyone can calculate deep into the lines just like a GM with enough focus and mental sharpness.

With a new account its very easy to reach a high rating simply because of the nature of the rating. What's weird to me is that i would still solve ~1500 rated puzzles at 2000 rating as if there are no harder puzzles

@Rahul Khanduri perhaps because the puzzles are rather short they cant get rated higher. or that algorithm that picks them out is very limited as to not just reward engine moves basically
