As a german catholic, i am really thankful for this video. It is a common misconception that the nazis were a hardcore traditionalist movement, which is in no way true. They despised "the old germany" for its weakness and wanted to create something entirely new, with neo-paganist roots as well. It is really unfortunate how many misconceptions about the catholic church and her role in history are spread. They are even tought in many not so good schools. And i was really happy when you mentioned that the catholics (like my great grandpa) were far less likely to vote for the nazis, cause this fact is not very known nowadays, unfortunately they were already a minority back then.

Jesus did say His Church would be persecuted. I can’t name another Church that is more publicly ridiculed and a Faith that is more universally persecuted then the Catholic Church and Catholic Christians.

Copy/Paste: The Catholic Church actually saved more J-ws than every J-wish relief organization combined at the time. The Pope was living in an area (Italy), that was under heavy Axis control, and so he literally stated he played along. But the Pope secretly released propaganda and Teachings against the naz-s and his J-ws in his own home. He wouldn’t have been able to help as many people by directly going against their regime. That’s what I’ve heard at least.

The survivors themselves always made it clear that you Poles were soooo antisemitic, and hardly any of you saved Jews, on the contrary, you gladly turned them in to Hitler and you loved the Nazis. The Church didn't help Nazis. It was One individual, a nazi Sympathiser who used the Vatican's tunnels to do so, however, The Church knew and hunted them down using those very tunnels also.

I have no evidence and don’t know anything about it, but I think it could just be compassion. I don’t think it’s right, but priests tend to not want death and will protect oppressed people. The amount of priests who protected Jewish people during the Holocaust for example was immense. Protecting Nazis isn’t good, but some priests moral compasses might just be a bit off, maybe a little racist to.

MARX - Besides his self-hating racism of Jews, he was a self-centered narcissist that insisted on his way with everything. His wife was quoted as stating "He's my big baby". While his wife and children lived in dirt poverty and near starvation, Marx always made sure he had his wine and cigars. He never got his hands calloused for doing blue collar work, but struggled to get his articles published. His rich capitalist buddy Engels, who inherited his Daddy's textile business and lived like an aristocratic Bourgeoisie, kept bailing out Marx over and over, until he finally just set him up on a monthly stipend. Marx chased down every family and friend's inheritances, even though in his Communist Manifesto one of his platforms was to abolish inheritances! It was always "Do as I say, not as I do" with Marx. Marx burned through money like there was no tomorrow. When Marx moved to England, he purchased a very nice middle class house, with servants and then took his family on a three week vacation. Afterward, he threw a party for his daughter and 50 of her friends. Then he was in debt again, and Engels had to bail him out again. Marx later got his unpaid housemaid pregnant, and never acknowledged the child. He convinced Engels to claim it was his son, so Marx reputation would not "suffer". Marx never cared about the poor or the working class. It was always about himself. He never went to a protest, never mingled with the workers, but always put himself as "special" to live like the very Bourgeoisie he was jealous of.

St. Charbel we can't forget after the grand mufti of Jerusalem pact with Hitler and the Arab revolt against Jewish immigration to the British mandate lead to a stop of Jewish immigration which could have saved untold amount of lives. Many Maronites risked their lives to smuggle Jewish people into what would become future Israel.

The whole idea of progressivism is rooted in Modernist thinking. For the Church, real progress is found in adherence to an objective standard of living set down once and for all by Jesus Christ, and in keeping the traditional dogma ("progress of dogma is corruption of dogma"). The Enlightenment philosophers believed in a notion of scientific progress beginning with man's capacity to Reason. This shift in paradigm from religious thought to scientific thought changed the rationale for antisemitism from an earlier religious form (see Martin Luther and his "On the Jews and their Lies") to one based on a secular theory of genetic "progress". Nazi antisemitism was a product of scientific racism, itself a product of Modernism which the Church has everywhere opposed. The Nazi regime would have liked to have used national Churches as a means for controlling the public, but the universalism of Catholicism made that impossible.

The book Church of Spies is really interesting in this regard -- it makes a convincing case that Pope Pius XII felt like active assistance would do more harm than good after the tragic fallout of the Dutch bishops' criticism and decided instead to actively assist those who sought to overthrow Hitler from the shadows.

Yeah I heard about the brutal crackdown by the Nazis once those Dutch Bishops raised their voices publicly in opposition. The Nazis wiped out an entire town the next day in response.

I mean in his case, definitely. The Lateran treaty which gave the Vatican independence was still fairly new at the time having only been signed 10 years before the start of the war. even still, being surrounded on all sides by Mussolini's fascist Italy effectively made the pope a hostage who lived and died purely based on how much of a threat the axis powers saw him as. covert support for the allies was the only way to go for him.

that is not from an academic press and the author himself admits that: 1. Pius XII never issued a public protest on Oct. 16, 1943 or when Mussolini was disposed, or when the Allies took Rome, quite the opposite: he was ANGRY that allied soldiers "violated" Vatican grounds.

The fact that most Protestant Germany in the north voted for Nazis and that most of the Catholics in Southern Germany did not vote for the Nazis is an eye-opener for me. My parents come from Northern Germany and immigrated to Canada in the late 50s, and indeed my mother is a Protestant, although she was just a child growing up during WWII. I became Catholic in my late 20s and have met a couple in my parish from Bavaria who are Catholic.

I was almost turned away by the 20 minute length, but glad I watched! Excellent recap of the Nazi-Catholic canard. I've studied this topic after learning of the character assassination of Pius XII. You provided some facts I've not seen before, particularly the voting record of Catholic vs. Protestant Germany regarding Hitler. Well done!

As Christ was often misunderstood and slandered, His Body, the Church, must suffer the same. This should surprise no Catholic. To me, this is another sign that Christ founded the Catholic Church. In eschatological time, ie I don't know when, maybe it's already been happening in some sense, but I expect the Church to endure a "passion", die and then triumphantly resurrected like Christ did. People forget that Mussolini, the father of fascism, was originally a socialist, who believed that Socialism did not go far enough. He did not see himself as being against Socialism, but saw himself as taking Socialism to the next revolutionary step.

You’re only partly correct. Mussolini used to be a revolutionary socialist but he was excommunicated because he was primarily a nationalist and was opposed to the idea of international socialism. It was at this point he started collaborating with Giovanni Gentile and they developed fascism which has elements of socialism within but it’s wholly opposed to communism. From 1922 up until WWII, Mussolini actually did wonderful things in Italy. Even though he was as atheist for most of his life he did repent before his death and it’s been confirmed he’s in Heaven

Though I disagree with some comments you made about some modern poltics, I completely side with you on this issue. The Nazis wanted complete alliegence to Hitler, and another large institution requiring aliegence to the God above all else is incompatible with Nazi idiology.

Thank you for that video! It was marvellous! The Concordat, the so-called ‘treaty’ was what enabled the protection of ‘non-Aryan Catholics’ - as you mentioned , including Edith stein. It also enabled the monasteries and convents to shelter Jewish and other persecuted people. The Vatican also sheltered communists, by the way, even though they were opposed to their ideology. There is nothing accidental in the fake hypocrisy of ‘academics’ ruminating on whether the pope/ Catholic Church did these heroic acts. The evidence is there - not least in contemporaneous newspapers reports by third parties , including Jewish newspapers and English (Times etc/ NY Times). It shows their bad faith when they twist a concordat to claim they were in sympathy. The Jews executed the Harara agreement with the Nazi regime - nobody claims they were sympathetic. Treaties are not friendship knots - for a ‘scholar’ to represent this is evidence of sympathy is cynical manipulation. That is why videos such as yours are very important.

The concordot of 1933 was for the catholic church the jews who not we're baptized into the church we're left to their fate.the catholic central party was Hitler only obstacle to his policies. The blood libel was in catholic Spain. Long before Hitler, the wearing of the yellow star and ghettos no government positions, was in the papal states long before Hitler. You forget the past history of the persecutions 9f the jews as God killers, and the horrendous libel of killing Christian children and their blood used in the passover.

The cultural disconnect is definitely a little funny. The controversy around that specific wording doesn't seem to be present anywhere outside of Eastern Europe. In the USA, NOBODY would think that you were blaming the Polish people for death camps when you say "Polish death camp", it's just kind of culturally understood that the phrase means "Nazi death camps in Poland". Ya learn something new every day.

I was looking to see what you had to say about the conduct of catholics in places like Croatia where it seems they were directly inplicated in war crimes including the murder of Orthodox christians, but you did not mention any of that. The stories of Edith Stein and Father Maximilian Kolbe are some of the most tragic, heartbreaking yet hopeful stories of sacrifice that only true, holy martyrs could have lived through. Also, another story that is a bit less known is the murders of the White Rose group, a Catholic student group of the University of Munich persecuted by the Gestapo for voicing their dissent against the regime: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rose Young kids, facing death for justice and the Eternal Truth. There have been collaborationists, sure, as opportunists or frightened individuals. But the true faithful to Christ and the Church were the saints and martyrs that faced the regime and were persecuted for it.

Why not read the Doctrine of Fascism and the different Italian thinkers on this? Go directly to the sources not the critics and recycle the same tripe we have heard over and over and over. When you want to learn about the Catholic Church do you read Catholics and Early Church stuff? Or do you go to some American Baptist or some random Lutheran? Fascism was largely influenced by Catholic Social Theory, Pope Leo the 13th's work, that was being discussed in response to the workers riots in the mid 1800s. It was "modern" but it was responding to many many ills and symptoms of the enlightenment and post Christian theories. As well as a Post monarchy Europe. National Socialist theory was not Fascist (Fascist is distinctly made up of Italian thought, as well as a rejection of the materialist dialectic of Communism). NatSocs was a theory that seemed to evolve with how the state was progressing since the time of the kings. It was distinctly Germany and its economic theory was flawed. But it was just a theory that was responding to the issue that happened with Germany in the 1800s (napoleonic wars) and then with world war 2, and how nationalism itself was becoming the in thing with the establishment of these countries. At lot of this is discussed in Adolfs book as his History teacher was very interested in discussing the German Empire. A concept very fresh in the Germans mind and not so fresh in our Western British Colony mind. The point is that the National Socialism can't be understood through these random critics and most people who are experts on the topic go to original source material. context is everything. There is a lot here that is very very much a surface level understanding of Fascism and it is so frustrating to see that happening time and time again with mainstream Catholics. Confront exactly what is wrong with the ideology! not the wikipedia stuff and post war propaganda and atrocity pr0n. you do nothing for your case to but to keep people in a tiny little box on these topics. Look I like you guys, on Catholic stuff you are great. However, the lower ranks of catholic church were not so high in morale. I implore you to read about the forced conversions to Catholicism in Croatia and Bosnia during WW2, as well about the Ratlines. As someone from the Balkans, these are not easily forgettable.

It is left to psychologists to explain why some people far removed from the conflict in the comfort of their armchairs impugn the character of people actually doing their best while caught up in the Nazi machinery of death. Even among the German Protestants there were some heroic anti-Nazi's, like Dietrich Bonhoeffer too of course.

National Socialism and Fascism are two distinct things. The eugenics practiced in Italy consisted of literacy campaigns and education on hygiene for instance, there were special schools for disabled children with trained teachers to meet their needs. The obsession with biological racism and nordic race mysticism was unique to German National Socialism. Look at Distributism, basically the Church’s outline for an economic system, and how it’s mirrored pretty well by proto-fascist Sorelian theories on the general strike and syndicalism.

Good stuff, Brian. We need more of this kind of thing. To understand the enemies of the Church, we really need to understand what makes them tick. That book about Liberalism, Socialism and Fascism looks good. I would also say that along with the main 19th century ideologies, liberalism and socialism, there is also nationalism, which is often regarded as a conservative/right-wing ideology these days, but in 1848 was absolutely a progressive ideology. Where do all these modern ideologies come from, then? As you say, Fascism is called far right, even though it's simply socialism draped with the national flag. The France of the first revolution was the prototype, and in fact all modern ideologies stem from 1789: nationalism (which really kicked off in the 19th century), socialism (and its little brother, fascism), and communism. Racism came along slightly separately, as the poisoned offspring of Darwinism, and with some help from Herbert Spencer. If you want to know the true nature of the inglorious French Revolution, all you need to do is look at Article 3 of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen: 'The principle of any sovereignty resides essentially in the Nation. No body, no individual may exercise any authority which does not proceed directly from the nation.' That should scare you. It means that all authority is exercised in the name of the state, and no authority can be exercised without the state's permission: the authority of a father over his son, a teacher over his pupils - everything. This is socialism; this is communism; this is fascism (As Mussolini said, 'Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State.')

Marxist socialism is indeed a cult of anti tradition. I don't however, fully agree with the statement that the NS were anti tradition. My husband wrote his dissertation on how eugenicist and later Nazi ideologies shaped the way Scandinavian and German history and mythology were talked about in the academic world and let me tell you- you can't open a book on Norse mythology written between the years 1900-1960 without it being filled with EXTREMELY questionable racial material. Their movement (and the earlier racist movements which inspired them) absolutely wrecked the academic study of accurate medieval Scandinavian history by co-opting it to justify their radicalism. We are still dealing with the fallout in the field, too. Nazis used motifs from Norse mythology ALL the time, it was very very prevalent. Seriously. Go read about 20th century Nazi and Nazi-sympathizing occultism. Shit's bonkers. Nazi ideology was very anti-Christianity in general. They had to pay it begrudging lip service because it was so ubiquitous in Germany, but Nazi officials would routinely dunk on Christianity for being the religion of the weak. A routine sentiment for eugenicist/Nazi types ever since Nietzsche popularized it in the 19th c, and they attempted to slowly replace Christianity in the culture with a neo-pagans-ish worship of the state and the self. They were fundamentally opposed to traditional thought on birth control, charity, the nature of the human soul, humility and human dignity, etc. So you have to understand - to a Catholic Christian, they might have the exterior trappings of "traditionalists", but there's a lot more to traditionalist philosophy than "liking family" and "not liking modern art". They stemmed from anti-tradition philosophical movements in the 19th century which denied church authority, emphasized personal power, scoffed at religion, and sought to replace "weak" Christian thought. It's ridiculous to paint them as traditionalists by comparing them to a slightly more radical anti-traditional sect like the Marxists. During the Second World War in Yugoslavia, Catholic priests and Muslim clerics were willing accomplices in the genocide of the nations Serbian, Jewish and Roma population. From 1941 until 1945, the Nazi-installed regime of Ante Pavelic in Croatia carried out some of the most horrific crimes of the Holocaust (known as the Porajmos by the Roma), killing over 800,000 Yugoslav citizens - 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Roma. In these crimes, the Croatian Ustasha and Muslim fundamentalists were openly supported by the Vatican, the Archbishop of Zagreb Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac (1898-1960), and the Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini. Many of the victims of the Pavelic regime in Croatia were killed in the war's third largest death camp - Jasenovac, where over 200,000 people - mainly Orthodox Serbs met their deaths. Some 240,000 were "rebaptized" into the Catholic faith by fundamentalist Clerics in "the Catholic Kingdom of Croatia" as part of the policy to "kill a third, deport a third, convert a third" of Yugoslavia's Serbs, Jews and Roma in wartime Bosnia and Croatia (The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican, Vladimar Dedijer, Anriman-Verlag, Freiburg, Germany, 1988). On April 6th 1941, Nazi Germany invaded Yugoslavia. Hitler granted "Aryan" status to Croatia as his fascist allies carved up Yugoslavia. One of the best books on this subject is the Church of Spies by Mark Riebling. It sorts out so much, getting it all straight. An AMAZING read. And Pius XII rocked!

The Catholic Church actually saved more J-ws than every J-wish relief organization combined at the time. The Pope was living in an area (Italy), that was under heavy Axis control, and so he literally stated he played along. But the Pope secretly released propaganda and Teachings against the naz-s and his J-ws in his own home. He wouldn’t have been able to help as many people by directly going against their regime. That’s what I’ve heard at least.

It's a terrible book written by a conspiracy theorist that relies on unreliable sources as noted by actual academics who have physically worked in the Vatican archives. Pius XII was a moral failure and to say otherwise is to shirk intellectual responsibility.

Hi, Brian! Really liked your video clip. It always irritates me when I read /see these accusations that Pope Pius XII could have stopped Hitler & Mussolini dead in their tracks if only he had made the slightest gesture of disapproval (after France, Britain, and the USA spent the whole 1930's "passing the buck" about Hitler: yes, Hitler is an SOB. Why doesn't someone, BUT NOT ME, do something about him)? What do these critics of Pope Pius XII expect that he was supposed to do? Put on a suit of medieval armor, lead a detachment of Swiss Guards into battle, and then PERSONALLY "take out" the combined German Luftwaffe and Wehmacht? Keep on dreaming!

This is something you can't escape Brian. Both Fascist Spain and Fascist Italy (literally the people who came up with the term Fascism) were deeply, and still deeply, Catholic. All you need to do is read David Kertzer and his amazing piece the Pope and Mussolini to see how deeply behind Fascist Italy the Roman Catholic Chruch was. Pius was deeply deeply anti-Communist after witnessing the Communists in Poland so he aligned himself with the Fascists movements that promised to stop the spread of Communism. Mussolini praised the Catholic Church as a foundation of the Italian identity. Pius had backchannel communications with Hitler all during WW2. They let the Nazis round up all the Jews in Rome. They did nothing to protect them, regardless of their personal feelings. Even if the Catholic Church disapproved of Fascism, they cozied up to it because it afforded them political power and security. That's undeniable. That's the unvarnished truth and you need to own that, rather than be so caught up in your biases that you want to defend people who defend Fascism.

That's actually heavily varnished truth. It's tangled webs of misinformation arising from the misinterpretations of generations born after the events, combined with anti-Catholic prejudicial bias. First of all, fascism is a branch of communism. It originated from the factions that remained following the failure of the Paris Commune. One wing were the Bolsheviks, the other were the fascists. They despised one another. The original Antifa was a project of the Bolsheviks in Germany. Fascism was also adopted in Ukraine, btw. While the Pope was negotiating treaties with the N a z i s, he was doing so as the Head of _State_ of Vatican City, which is a small country located inside of Italy, _near_ Rome. While the Pope is the _Bishop_ of Rome, he does not govern Rome or any part of Italy. And while you point out that Mussolini praised the catholicity of Italy (something I hadn't heard, so I don't know the context), one might offer the counterpoint that Mussolini was a politician who had to get his party elected before he could claim total power. As you may know, politicians sweet talk the people they expect to vote for them. Besides, evil doesn't introduce itself as evil. It lures its victims by presenting deceptively attractive goods. I don't remember everything else you threw into your tossed salad, but that's enough to show that you see the varnish on what you want to believe, and fall for it.

It’s more dressy than just a button up, but not as warm and bulky as a sweater. Or he reads a lot of Chesterton. Regardless, guys style has become super laxed during the years so I’m glad to see Brian dressing up. I’m a woman and I see that more women are starting to wearing skirts, dresses and nice sweaters. Everyone has the freedom to dress however they want but it’s nice to see people dress nice. The ripped jeans and T-shirt look is getting old.

Great work as always, I never associated the Catholic Church with them but I have heard little whispers about it here and there, and since the world is so complex as it is, lots of unconscious opinions and associations are built from made up nonsense. It was not our finest hour as a church, and we should be willing to acknowledge that. Catholics all too often fall too far down the rabbit hole of triumphalism - human pride - and craft excessive defences of the humans in the church out of this pride. Catholics defending the faith sometimes wrongly lean on this human pride, rather than rely on the supernatural hope of our faith. The church will survive because Jesus says we will, not because of our efforts to paint ourselves a rosy history we didn't really have.

@@BrianHoldsworth It's also worth mentioning that Hortler was an opportunist in his remarks and speeches about using God more often than Christ. (He may have only used Christ once, if at all). He tolerated "Positive Christianity" and did not rely on traditional Christianity. However, he recognized their importance (and attempted to gain their influence) for political purposes. Catholicism and Protestantism would be an obstacle to the new German tradition that Hortler wanted to create.

From everything I have read, a lot of individual Catholics, including priests, nuns, and laypeople, risked their lives to save Jews and were even honored after the war ... but ... the Catholic church as a whole could have done a lot more with the vast resources and wealth they had. Also, the Church did not sufficiently acknowledging its own role in fostering anti-Jewish attitudes that contributed to the Holocaust until the 1960's.

Either you’re a liar or you have only studied the victor propaganda side of WW2. There is audio about Hitler talking about “the lord” and referring to Britain as a great nation because of what “the lord” helped them do. There are also countless pictures and footage of Hitler shaking hands with high Catholic officials. I guess you expect me to just pretend that none of that exists. Lol.

Hitler and other Nazis leaders who were raised Catholic were excommunicated from the Church. Hitler believed in using the Church and tolerating it for political expediency, but in the long term, no institution could exist in the Third Reich that didn't get its legitimacy from the Nazi state. That said, Hitler wasn't an atheist. Even in private, he professed belief in a higher power and associated atheism with Bolshevik Soviet communism.

This guy Brian isn't operating off the right books, same as many commenters. Maybe look up the definition of "Communism" and remake the video? Why? Because we've never had a truly communist nation, ever, anywhere in human history. Small communities sure, but never a nation. The nations have all been a form of fascist aristocracy, but the rich dont like that term.

The Church never condemned Austrofascism, Austrofascism never persecuted Jews. The Jewish music theorist Schenker died peacefully in Vienna in 1935. His widow was deported to Theresienstadt. To me there is a wide gulf between Austrofascism and Nazism, and I judge different parts of Mussolini in power according to how he's closer to one or the other. That said, I subscribe, not only to Mit brennender Sorge, but also to the much milder criticisms of Mussolini in Non abbiamo bisogno. The one encyclical that concerns Austro-Fascism is Quadragesimo Anno. Dollfuss promised to make Austra "ein Quadragesimo Anno-Staat" - and no Pope objected to that claim. Some French Catholics are so wildly anti-Nazi, that anything _reminding them_ of Nazism, even by flimsy associations, triggers their N-adar, if you see what the portmanteau is meant to mean. If I uphold the council of Cologne in 1860 and its condemnation of Darwinism, since that is "German Catholicism" - even just that, or denouncing Hochhut, makes me a Nazi to some over here.

There are "good guys" because we are all imperfect humans of a sinful nature and we make mistakes but there are absolutely "better" or "worse" guys. That's the sort of good question Brian and other Catholics would prefer to ignore. It's a lot easier for them to stay in the religion if they can successfully pretend all that history didn't happen, and only focus on history that doesn't make their faith look bad.

Personally I'm wondering how do Catholics justify protecting such monsters from justice, and why are more Catholics not bothered by such history?
