After many years of hard drinking, I started having health issues. I finally decided enough was enough and checked myself into a treatment program. That was seven years ago and I haven't looked back. I started to eat right and workout, I ended up losing a hundred pounds in six months. I've been able to keep the weight off and haven't had a drink since. Life for me, is much better without alcohol.

Its messed up but hope you've made it far friend. I just gotta give up alcohol but I also work out. Its like the workout gives me good feeling sober and alcohol when off hours. I actually never knew how alcohol affects your physical fitness. I also look forward to drinking because I work hard all week with overtime and then I hit the gym after each day and on top of that I do jiu jitsu. I went hard with the booze in my 20’s, started slowing down in my 30’s, but was still drinking more than I should well into my 40’s. I stopped because I went to college at 47. I was working full time, going to school full time, working a part time internship, maintaining a relationship with my wife, and keeping my exercise routine intact. At the height of all that, even just a beer would slow me down and mess up my routine.

This is hands down the most entertaining/informative video of how alcohol affects gains. It's sad but true, them calories from drinks plus the snacking will demolish your goals. It took me too long to come to this realization until I completely stopped for a month and a half, I went from 228 to 205. It's a tough one to balance for me but I definitely restrict the booze to special events/nights when I cut.

When I was a kid, people used to think moderate drinking (one or two a day, especially red wine) was healthy. I think it's well documented now that it's poison at any level of consumption. I like that they both talked about improved sleep. It's well documented that alcohol messes up sleep even in small amounts by inhibiting REM sleep. It can help you fall asleep but the sleep you get is poor quality. No one should be using it as a sleep aid.
@andresmontana44662 жыл бұрын
It is a poison no doubt about it but it is a statistical fact that 1 or 2 glasses of red wine per day or even 1 or 2 bottles of beer and "statistically" you will live longer than if you drank no alcohol at all. It's due to the cardio vascular benefits of alcohol thinning the blood, they hypothesise, and with red wine, added tannins. Could an aspirin a day have the same effect.. probably. Just sayin...
@vadimk34843 жыл бұрын
After a decade of "responsible drinking", last year I decided to quit. I can still toast 30 grams on a special occasion if someone absolutely won't take a "no", but I quit buying booze and always decline when I'm offered a drink, so effectively my alcohol consumption went from a few liters to a few grams per year. And, frankly, it's been awesome. Can't say it was life-changing (probably because I didn't drink that often), but definitely positive - no more headaches, no more stupid regrettable drunk decisions, no more wasted hangover days. Epic win!

This video really resonated with me. I've been telling myself for yeas that I need to cut back on the alcohol, for all of the reasons stated in this video. I had a goal to lose weight and I would do great until the weekend. then I would drink and eat so much junk after, completely destroying most of my progress for the week. The on Sunday i would feel sluggish and not want to do anything which really hurt my productivity. It's a whole unproductive, unhealthy cycle. I haven't drank since New years and i plan to keep it that way, at least for the month of January. If i resume drinking, it needs to be socially. Or if i want to enjoy a few drinks alone, maybe only once a month. Or hell, maybe I'll just stop drinking all together. We will definitely see!

Glad I came across this video. I'm a 34 year old woman and at my highest weight I was almost 300 lbs. I started hitting the gym hard in Nov '21 5x a week and while I've seen amazing progress, I am still an alcoholic. Week 1 of college was a whole new world for me as I hadn't ever partied in HS, so when I got to college I went a little nuts and haven't stopped drinking since. It's been over 15 years now that I've consumed copius amounts of alcohol, in the past few years it's been a little over two bottles of white wine EVERY night. I feel like an idiot thinking about it. I'm inhibiting my weight loss goals but more importantly I'm slowly commiting suicide. I have a resolution to quit or drastically decrease my intake this week. I'm sick of my liver hurting. I'm sick of feeling bloated constantly. And I'm sick of not seeing the weight loss I truly could be seeing given that I am lifting heavy and doing cardio every day. I hope I can feel like a new person when this heavy veil is lifted. I have so much potential, thanks for reminding me of that.

I feel you, girl. I've been having around the same amount of wine, give or take, for the past 4 months and I've gained a lot of weight. For me it was because I've had a very stressful moment in my life and felt I needed the alcohol to knock me out to sleep. Now that stress is slowly releasing and I'm down to just one bottle a night. Having HALF as much as I used to is a huge progress and I feel so much better. I did not lose weight yet, but I don't feel as bloated anymore. Hang on, we can do this!

I have never drank alcohol in my life but used to smoke cigarettes. It's been four months since my last smoke and I understand the willpower it takes for the first few days and weeks. I believe the factor that kept me in purgatory was the social aspect. I came clean to my friends and wanted them to respect my decision of quitting smoking. Since then, I have started eating clean, cut sugar, chips, coke and all the junk food, lost 27kilos of body weight started running and going to gym gained muscle and improved stamina. So yeah, it all came from that one spark to be healthy. You just have to be consistent and if you ever feel like slipping on your journey just remember why you started. He tried to explain why he overeats when he drinks, then oddly jumping straight to why it makes you fat. Alcohol makes you overeat due to lowering inhibition, lowering your bloodsugar, stimulating parts of your hypothalamus which gives you hunger signals. The empty calories from alcohol, added carbs from the drink, slowing fat metabolism and alcohol induced munchies are the combined reasons.

Day 9 no alcohol today. Plan is to Xmas. No sprint though, I seen a psychologist, addressed my issues, made a plan and back in the kickboxing gym last few months 3 times a week, now 5 times a week. Most months I'd drink 12k in calories, waste the next day on my weekends.. no more! Appreciate the video and motivation, and good luck to all having a go. 🙌

Aside from all the things you guys mentioned in this videos, I also noticed it improved my overall mental health a lot :) I have reduced my alcohol consumption to almost 0, I don't even drink once every month anymore, really only on special occasions. And even though I am a bigger than everage guy I already notice impairment after a single unit of alcohol on these occasions. This has made me realize how much of a poison ethanol really is. (oh and to add; I was quite a heavy drinker)

As a Muslim I've always been grateful that drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam and that I've practiced adhering to this restriction all my life. I have family/friends who struggled with alcohol abuse and though I've never drank, I've actually researched and always found programs like AA and 12-steps to be so educational and beneficial to people practicing it. It makes you a better human being. Keeping all those struggling with the disease in my prayers 🙏

I am 26 and I have worked out consistently for 10+ years. I have always been active and I was lucky enough to play competitive college football for 4 years. After college I have made it a goal to stay fit, eat clean, and ripped. The results were there, I got super shredded at 210 and continue to grind. However, I have been a consistent drinker since I’ve been 18. It’s always been around and all my friends drink. It is a habit at this point. I’ve never said no and I never thought about it seriously. This video is a good lens into how life is different and most likely better when you don’t drink. I wonder what my fitness results would be if I didn’t consume an abundance of extra calories a week. Either way, thanks for the video and I am going to try this challenge.

Lost my sister in 2018 to alcohol it is a horrid way to die. The pain and humiliation is unbelievable. Then my wife of 34 years succumbed to alcohol induced cirrhosis June of 2022. Wife initially got sick enough to be hospitalized in November 2018, and at that time they gave her 6 months to live. She suffered for around 30 months after that she lost everything, she went blind, lost her ability to walk, bath herself, go to the bathroom on her own, lost control of her bowels and bladder. She was having 5-6 gran maul seizures per day. I had to quit my job to stay home with her. In the process I started drinking every day, I convinced myself to relieve stress. Now I am struggling to stop. Historically I have been a fit person. I am, or used to be a runner and Mountain Bike racer. I gained 40 lbs. I have started running again and going to the gym 3-4 times per week and changed my diet and quit hard liquor since June however still drinking beer every day (8-12). As of today its been 32 hours since my last beer.

High level alcoholic here. "Tasting the alcohol", eh? Here's something that'll blow your mind. I eventually reached a point of using water as a chaser. Eventually plain vodka tasted... sweet. Seriously. By that point, I already knew I had a problem, but that was very much a "wasn't expecting that". Obviously moderation is not an option for me - one drink leads to many, which leads to drinking the next day, etc.

I got to agree, the hardest part with fitness goals is hands down the combination of extra calories from alcohol and additional snacking. To add to that, the snacking is almost never nutrient dense foods, but rather something rich in fats & carbohydrates. Another note that I've experienced is the delay in muscle recovery, I tend to be sore longer and unable to progress with weight training. So overall, a poor choice to integrate for best fitness but has it's purpose socially and getting mental breaks from stress... all depends on your goals :)

I haven't had a drop of alcohol since 2001. Yes. That's almost 22 years. Never missed it, as I never really liked it to begin with. I wish everyone the courage to stop drinking. For good. It's poison that the body has no idea what to do with.

I call this misinformation and don't understand why you think that and say it. It is not poison. I had a girl friend that would get sick when she drank but she was also a bartender. It doesn't work for her and maybe you but to call it poison is a lie. Alcohol, is a gift from God or mother nature if that makes you feel better. It is so easy to make and in fact comes naturally since yeast is floating through the air. I suppose you think heroine is poison just like mushrooms and cocaine. You are deceived. All plants are a blessing. If you don't like don't drink it but don't lie.

@@enigmatic7665 yeah for sure, social media is equally pointless really. I think much of what we do today is pointless. We work ourselves to death for another’s gain, we live outside our means for a “lifestyle” we don’t really want, and we stare at screens continuously and very few people even know what a hard days work is. I work for myself and have zero employees, I wish I could say I actually own my property but the government collects property taxes every year regardless and hypothetically can take it whenever they want.
