Tip, First and foremost, Spend your next trip completely making your walking path from the water to your tent site as accessible as possible on the island. So that all your future supplies and equipment can be moved around the island as comfortably as possible. You make wise choices. Good luck.

I agree. This is a great tip. You should really be spending some time making transportation on the island smoother.

A landing of some sort should be high on the list as well. Getting hurt getting things out of the boat is just a matter of time at this point.

The narrow bitumen felt is also meant to be used between the foundation bricks and the wooden parts. It is very important as it prevents capillary water from keeping the wooden parts wet and thus prevents them from rotting. I would lift the outhouse corner by corner with a bottle jack just a little bit and slide suitable pieces of the felt in between the bricks and wooden parts.

Try to remember whenever you're beating on wood with a hammer to try and have a sacrificial piece of wood that you're hitting. You spread out the load that you're hitting and you're not going to mess up the wood as in that tongue and groove for your bathroom

The hut looks very nice! I would, however, give the wood another coat of weatherproof varnish on the outside, even if the manufacturer has already done that, to simply make the wood even more resistant. If it smells, I can also recommend putting ash and charcoal in the tank. This has an antibacterial effect and dispels unpleasant smells. As for the thunderstorm: you are of course safest in the car. But since that is probably not always possible, the best thing to do is to go to the lowest part of the island, where the tallest trees are not. This makes a lightning strike relatively unlikely, even if it is still not perfect. Thanks for the video and have a nice week!

Haha, seeing the outhouse delivery just popped a thought to my mind. You need a barge. Some tire tubes and a platform. Not only for construction but also as a foundation to your floating pier. Make it more sturdy with used plastic barrels.
@TheFuel892 ай бұрын
Going under a tree in thunderstorm isn't dangerous unless it's on otherwise open place. Avoid highest place on the island and don't be on the boat during one and you're good. Cool outhouse!

If you plan on doing a lot of construction on the island.. You should consider making yourself a easy raft that can have materials on it. I made a raft from a few barrels and some wood ( cost was around 50 USD bought used materials) And i think i had materials that would otherwise fill a full container, so around 1500kg or so each trip. Made my life 20x easier. After i was done i put another 500 dollars into th raft and made it a floating mini terrace on water. Now i fish from it and so much more.

The best looking outhouse I've seen so far! I may sound like a broken record but this video highlights even more your transport struggle. And I see in the comments many people suggest the same thing that I would do - make a floating deck/pontoon barge with ramp. You could use it everywhere around, to transport stuff, as a dock and as party barge. Also could you let us know how steep is from where you can park your car to water edge, and how steep is the most gentle island edge? In camera it does not look that bad, but cameras do not show angles well. Ideal setup would require no unloading stuff until at destination - imagine getting small car trailer that you could stuff with stuff, haul it there, get it down with something like small ATV, use barge to get in on the island and unload directly there. That would be cool and efficient, with some creativity it won't be that super expensive. You have a lot of energy and cool project ahead, we don't want to get you burned out in the middle, so please excuse all the "smart talk" :D Cheers!
@Pikaxsu23 күн бұрын
Start keeping basic toolset also in the car: pliers and cutters, hammer, straps to tie things down and knives, scissors, small showel, and an axe, if storm fells tree or t rees and you can't get driving away trhough your forested narrow pathway to the road.. And either have spare key hidden by the car (reducing the rowing back and forth when you forget the car keys) while you are in the island, or keep the keys with you all the times even while on the island, if you need to hop to the car..

Old timer wisdom here...Spruce trees give off negitive ions. They were customary to plant around a house to ast as natural lightning rods. So, as long as you are away from Spruce trees, and not out in a flat, open area like a field or a pond, and not hanging on to a any tall metal type structure, you should be pretty safe from lightning. On your deck is a pretty good place. Limited grounding, good overhead cover. So as long as you keep away from those diabolical Spruce you should be good. Out in the open is the worst place.

Actually the tent is your safest place, in case of thunder, the lighting will hit the tallest object which in your island will be the trees around you. Plus your tent is now above the ground and insulate you from possible ground voltage if a tree is actually hit. Avoid being in the boat at the time of thunder.

We just build our own outhouse couple years ago. We painted it outside right away to protect it from the weather, but we didn’t realise that the unprotected wood can easily get black moldy spots when the air moisture gets high during the fall. So I recommend to use some uncolored mold protection (homeenestoaine in Finnish) inside if you don’t plan to paint it inside. That will keep the natural wood color but still protect it. 😊

You are going to need those metal rods to tighten the struture after the wood dries and shrinks. Check once a year if they need tightening and maybe after a few years your outhouse has finally setteled and you can forget about that chore. Nice work and good thinking with door and windows, no need to panic just figure out a way to fix these types of issues.

Is this a possibility? When you need a lot of heavy material for future buildings… Construct a large pontoon at a more accessible location. Load your construction material on the pontoon. Float the entire thing to the island (you’ll probably need to borrow/rent a powered boat for this) Unload the material and then fix the pontoon into position to use as a dock. Just an idea?

Words to live by ( from my father)....You don't need to wear a watch. You can forget your wallet and be o.k. But NEVER ever be without a knife. I'm now in my late 50's. And that is one of the truest statements I've ever learned. From my Godfather... ( grew up on a farm where we butchered basically every piece of meat we ate) ... a dull knife will hardly cut cool meat. But it will slice your warm hand to the bone. Unfortunately he gave those words of wisdom after I cut my finger to the bone while butchering a cow. Whenever you hear a great quote or thought, remember it. One day YOU will be the one trying to pass knowledge on to the young bloods. It might take decades to realize the truth of a lesson, but that only makes that lesson more valuable to pass on. You are doing great. And I love your enthusiasm.
