IT CEASES TO AMAZE ME THAT MORE GUITARIST DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE BYOC CROWN JEWEL I’m sorry I hadn’t gotten back sooner with a long over due review on the incredible BYOC Crown JeweL I’m embarrassed to mention how many clean boost, overdrive and distortion pedals I’ve owned and had lent to me over the last 45 years. I lost count long ago. You built me a Crown Jewel about 2 years ago. Fellow guitarist, take my word for it, it’s the only Analog boost, overdrive, distortion pedal you will ever need. Get all 11 mini pcb modules, he can probably do a discounted package deal for you. If you don’t have the time and feel you don’t have the experience to attempt the build, have him build it for you, custom pick out the housing color, knobs, leds, etc. Take into consideration that you will never need to buy another clean or dirt pedal and that it replaces all of them and then some because it’s an Analog laboratory of boost, overdrive and distortion timbres, this makes it an absolute steal. Keith is extremely nice , accommodating, & amiable too deal with. It’s a one on one transaction, no middleman, you deal directly, no BS, just good old American ingenuity and know how. Absolute sheer genius!!! Get 2 , the more, the merrier!! It may seem a bit overwhelming with all the knobs and switches but it’s a piece of cake to get a handle on. If you can’t find your signature sound on the Crown Jewel, you won’t find it anywhere.........not in this lifetime It’s very sad to see what marketing and the media’s have done so that our so-called guitar Gods always use products they can endorse to get the $ and freebies God bless hermano

I own a couple of these pedals. Love them. I actually had only used the LPB Boost module up until this evening, but recently ordered both the Fuzz and Soft Clipping modules. I built out and installed the Soft Clipping module, it’s the same as the drive section of a Tubescreamer. You can dial in the amount of drive on an internal control on the module. It sounds great by itself in the boost section of the pedal, or as a pre-boost into the main pedal. It basically makes the pedal a dual-selectable drive. Can’t wait to build out and install the fuzz, to combine with the rest of the pedal for Eric Johnson-type tones. Hoping to get tones similar to the Hermida Audio Dover Drive, which is essentially a Fuzzface combined with a Zen Drive; Dover Drives are going for at least $300 these days, so it would be great if the Crown Jewel can create those tones. I really can’t imagine another pedal being more useful or versatile. The range of great sounds you can dial in is vast.

I really dig the various tones expressed here, I'm having a hard time with the tuning for a lot of the clips, it's off enough that it's a decent distraction from the shaping that's going on with the pedal. ...I guess the video still made me want to build one of these, so it worked. :)

I agree with others, I think. Really impressive, that one pedal can reasonably do so many things. I am considering building this. That said, run a TU-2 on a 3rd loop for videos. Distractingly off tuning/intonation.

Seems to me the real pedal has more clarity in almost every case (the bottom also fizzes out a bit more) but in a loud setting or boosting an amp, I am not so sure it would be that noticeable. Great job.

@buildyourownclone7 жыл бұрын
Stefan Karlsson presets would certainly be a very nice feature. However, this pedal is all analog. And it's also a kit for the end user to build. So presets just wouldn't work here, but perhaps that's an idea for a future product.

Do the modules affect the drive or just the boost? Which module's in this one, or is it irrelevant because the boost isn't used here? Thanks, amazing demo!
@buildyourownclone7 жыл бұрын
Check out this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp7OmKKMm5eIf7c The modules only affect the boost. However, if you have the boost in first postion, then you can use it to stack with the overdrive rather than just be a boost. An example would be the DS-1 comparison. The boost was used as a pre-gain. The LPB module was being used here.

I still think it would help to have some sort of crib sheet of settings here - it's not always easy to see what parameters have been set for each tone - if someone can provide me with the raw settings, flavour of boost etc. - I can put them into a more palatable guide

Well, the Timmy is still tough to nail, but this pedal is cool. How long until ... ?
@buildyourownclone7 жыл бұрын
njslim I thought it was pretty spot on for the first half before flipping the toggle switch. It was a little off in the second half though. With the switch up, the Timmy uses 4 silicon diodes (2 pairs in series) in a soft clipping position. The Crown Jewel was in Soft LED mode (which is more like having 6 silicon diodes), which is going to be a little louder and not clip quite as much. I think the biggest difference in the A/B after flipping the toggle switches was that I didn't get the volumes matched up well enough.

This is the same pedal. The LPB module is being used in a couple comparisons, but it is being used as a pre-gain for the primary drive channel. None of the comparisons feature just the boost module.

@buildyourownclone6 жыл бұрын
The BOSS DS-1 and RAT. If you see the green boost channel LED light on, that means it's using the LPB boost module as a pre-boost for extra gain. You can use the first/last switch to put the boost in front of the overdrive or after the overdrive. In this demo, it is only being used in front of the overdrive for a distortion boost, not after the overdrive for a volume boost.

"IT CEASES TO AMAZE ME THAT MORE GUITARISTS DON’T KNOW ABOUT..." tuning and/or intonating their guitars properly before putting out anything for public scrutiny. Not any of the guitars in this video are in tune. I feel poor for the guy not knowing how to press/fret adequately enough or not hearing it. To make things mitigating, he's not alone. 90 percent of all these DEMO videos on YT of something, especially dirt boxes, multifx, and so on, has initially when they demo a CLEAN sound, and out of tune guitar, when they strum an open chord. The sad part is that they a) either don't give a f*** b) or hear it but doesn't care or both (probably the last one). Only the top notch guys, very famous ones, Pete Thorn and the likes, nails it all of the time. Which takes away all the incentive for this video, and defeat its purpose. Couldn't really watch it all the way through, fast forwarded to any point where I thought there was finally guitar in tune, but .. no. Which means I still can't make anything out of if the Crown Jewel is something that you can set to get very close to all the other pedals. My qualified guess is that people are "raised" on relying on tuning machines/tuners ONLY and doesn't hear it when they press out of pitch or if the first string they tuned to has gone out again, when tuning all the other strings. Get someone else to check the guitars then, before go public with the video...
