I don’t think it’s hereditary and I’ll tell you why. I had an identical twin sister. I wore high heels all my life, I danced ballroom dancing, waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha, swing, Samba, and tango in 2.5 to 3 inch heels for years, and I developed bunions and hammer toes and they were horrible. I had surgery, which is one of the best things I ever did. On the other hand, my twin sister had perfect feet she never wore heels ever. She always wore flats, and she had perfect feet, and we were identical. Great informative video.

So you think when something is hereditary it means it happens in the family ALL THE TIME? It means you have a higher chance of getting whatever the issue is passed down to you. Many cases where it doesn’t. I have a family ailment that is hereditary and most of my family has it. I don’t.

I’ve had bunions on both feet for years. They don’t hurt and I could care less how they look. I wear wider comfortable shoes. My bunions are my own fault from many years of wearing ridiculous tight shoes for fashion. But I am grateful that they don’t hurt.

I really enjoyed this! Way back in 1985 (Chicago) I discovered a young podiatrist who did bunion surgery right in his office. A comfy op chair, local anesthesia between the toes (ouch!), headphones on to cancel out the noise of the drill - and about 30 minutes later I walked out in a surgical shoe. About four weeks later a tennis shoe - and then it was done! It was revolutionary at the time and I went for it to avoid general anesthesia. Wonderful result! To this day, my bunion is still gone! Thought this might interest you. Love your show, docs! 🙋‍♀️🥰🇺🇸👍‼️

Foot problems. OMG. Here I go. I have a large bunion on my right foot. Very attractive. That's interesting that you say it's mostly hereditary. I was a mail carrier for 31 years. Walked A LOT. And often, especially in my younger years, my shoes were cheaper and often ill-fitting/tight/too short, etc. My podiatrist here thought that had something to do with me developing the bunion. My feet took terrible punishment throughout the course of my job. I've had plantar fasciitis, bunions, bone spurs on my heels, blisters, been on crutches. Now that I'm not doing that job anymore, I don't notice the bunion much unless I am trying to balance on that one leg like for a yoga pose for instance. It does throw off my balance because the bunion has deformed my foot. What helped me a lot was only wearing good comfortable shoes. I only have two pair that I wear, one is Birkenstock sandals (very good!) and the other is very high-end (I think it is the 928 shoe) New Balance walking shoe (very good!) AND, maybe most importantly, I wear a medically made orthotic (excellent) in my shoes which helps a lot with all of it. I want to say if you walk a lot especially, it's really important to make sure your footwear fits properly and has very good support and is WIDE ENOUGH to that the outside of your foot, especially in the area that a bunion could form, is not being pressed and squeezed. It cost more to buy very high quality foot wear and a professionally made orthotic but it's worth it and the higher quality stuff lasts a long time, too. I guess I got permission already to do the long comments, so I won't apologize this time. That look Dr. Zalzal gives at 7:43 LOL. Yes, we're listening! Also, the guest doctor seems very smart and chill. You have some very good doctors up there in Canada. Please send some down to the states. Thank you for another very informative and helpful video.

My Podiatrist only recommended custom orthopedic insert for my bad bunions. He said I needed to wear slippers/shoes with arch support at home. Bare feet is a no-no. And also if the soles of the sneakers/shoes can be bended by hand, they don’t provide enough support to the feet. The Podiatry Department recommends specific sneaker/shoe brands. To my surprise, some of them make sandals and heels also with arch support. Basically, when wearing shoes the lower legs should be 90 degrees to the ground. I always appreciate and learn from the videos of this channel. Would you consider making videos on ‘vertigo’ and ‘easy bruising’ please. Thank you.

When she finally started buying comfortable and supportive shoes, so did I. I don't have a problem wearing wide shoes. I hate being squeezed into a tight fitting shoe.👠 My precautions have served me well and I will hopefully never have to have surgery! I had a bunion removed from my left foot in 1996, then my right foot in 1999. That was back when they did the long incision and a long recovery. I was on crutches for a while and it HURT a lot. I had an office job and remember my dad driving me to work and hobbling in every day. I had bone spurs removed from my 2nd toe during each surgery, so it was kind of a 2-for-1! To this day, I cannot bend my 2nd toe on my left foot since that surgery, but the bunions are still gone! And I (naughtily) DID go back to wearing cute shoes and boots. I'm addicted to them!

I'm kind of surprised the foot doc didn't mention the usefulness of arch supports. I have fairly flat feet which causes me to put my weight slightly on the insides of my feet. This causes the big toe to drift towards the other toes. I have fairly bad bunions now, but wearing arch supports when on my feet for long stints is a life saver. Without the supports, my bunions start to hurt.

I'm seeing an orthopedic surgeon this week and want to learn as much as I can as I had surgery at 16 to fix my meniscus membrane. I wish I knew more then, as I've noticed now, they run in my family, including those who live in the rural area. I wish I'd done more over the years for foot strength and hip alignment. I live in Canada 🇨🇦 and I had my first bunion surgery in October 2022 that went well except the doctor forgot to fix the hammer toe. I had my second bunion surgery in February 2023 I had a lot of bleeding I am pretty sure I lost about 2 pints my first bandage change they had to soak the bandages to remove them from my foot. In March I told the doctor that it didn't feel right again in April I told him again that this wasn't healing properly and again in May 18th I told him again it wasn't healing properly he told me to stop physio and put me off for another month. On May 25th and 26th I went to emergency and on the 26th the emergency because my foot turned purple the doctor said I have a blood clot in my right leg. They won't remove it they put me on blood thinners which could take 3 to 6 months to get rid of it. When I told the doctor he missed the blood clot he apologized and said I didn't have the pain associated with a blood clot so that is why he didn't send me for a ultrasound. I told him after having shingles in 2022 and being miss diagnosed for 3 weeks I have an extremely high tolerance for pain and he should have sent me for a ultrasound as soon as I told him the swelling wouldn't go down. 😔😔😔😔😔

Sorry to hear this. So just so you know we would almost never go and remove the blood clot from a vein. This is done if it is in an artery which is a totally different issue. And yes without calf pain and leg swelling sometimes the clots can be missed. We hope you are well on your way to recovery!

I had one screw option in what was a big bunion back in early 2000s. It healed without complications and I’ve had happy feet since. I second spinal stenosis video request. Why is spinal stenosis inoperable in some but not others (husband has inoperable)? Thanks love your content.

I love you guys you make me laugh while at the same time aducating! I had surgery on both feet I remember my feet hurting as a young teen so I do think heredity is a factor. Surgery (separate times) on both was painful with a few month’s recovery but did the trick. 25 + years later still good but can’t wear high shoes anymore.

Thank you so much for doing this talk on bunions. I have had them since i was 9 and now at 60 they are extremely painful. It was great to hear about MIS for bunions as bunion surgery has typically been regarded as a nightmare. Love your show and thanks again for doing this topic.

Thank you for this video! I have a flat right foot, with a bunion. I also have a foot bone spur on this right foot from a ligament tear 20 years ago. Walking gait on this side doesnt seem natural. Recently, there was some nerve sensation on the inside of the foot and the big toe at times is numb likely due to the nerve issue. I'm waiting for continued advancements in surgery because foot and limb surgery is no small thing.

I have them on both feet. 😠 I was forced to take ballet as a kid (hated it). Had to cram feet into tiny ballet slippers and let's not forget toe shoes. Suggestions ? I'm 70. Ps, thanks so much for interesting shows.

Born with flat feet. Nothing could be done. Then by my 40th year bunions and pain. Wore leather Nursing or medic shoes my entire career. I had my left foot done at Guelph hospital, and it was awful, my great toe left dangling, and he fracture a longer bone in the foot to fix the baby toe bunion. I was a long time recovering, hard as a RN. Bosses were told id be down 1 week, but it went on and on. So i never did the other foot.

Mine are hereditary. Both of my grandmothers had them. I never wore high heels, being 5'11 or tight shoes. I'm 75 now so I guess I may as well leave them be. Years ago having bunions removed was very painful. One of my sisters had the surgery on hers and it was rough. Maybe its less painful now. I sure hope so.

I a bunion on both my feet hereditary and from ill fitting shoes as well. But the right foot is much worse and now the second toe is developing into a hammer toe. Looking forward to having surgery as this right foot hurts evey day. March or April I'm ready. I've waited too long!

Its the narrow toe box shoes that you wear for long work hour over several years. Get wide toe box, not just plain wide shoes. If you catch it it in time. Thats all.

I am in manufacturing and always on my feet. Guess I would have to be off work for three months. Thanks mom. LOLOL

im very surprised you didnt ask about the distinction between bunions and gout, which i still cant figure out online as i dont know which i have on my left toe.
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
So they are very different. Gout is a very sore red and stiff first MTP joint due to most commonly uric acid crystal deposition while bunions are really an alignment problem that leads to pain.

I have very bad bunions and hammer toes. How do I decide on whether to use an orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist? I had my right bunion removed by an orthopedic surgeon in the 80's, and he just shaved off some bone. The toe is still crocked. Thanks.

I love my narrow heels 👠 but my bunions on both feet are becoming worse and I think I have hammer toes, at first I thought the bumpy look was because of wearing shoes for long hours but I just realized it’s actually hammer toes.. seems like I have to get some wide shoes I’m so worried that it becomes worse and affect how my feet look🥲 thank you!
