For the postmortem: Withdrawing a large amount of money before going to see a Broadway “ticket broker” with a “show girl” for a show you’ve “seen before”? The man was gambling big time. He probably bought that apartment for his wife with a windfall of money he got on a big win. The calls he was angry about? Debts he had to pay cause he lots big and had to pay back. Hence the big cash out. But he didn’t have enough and got to see the bottom of the Hudson for the trouble.

@Nicholas Ramey 1. The show just opened the day before and he'd already gone to see it. Yes people go to see the same show twice, but it is a little suspicious to be going to see it multiple times over in that time span that it merited commenting on. 2. Hey, business associates are often involved in shady deals together. Could have shared the show girl amongst other things. Or the show girl could have shared them--I'm all about equality here. She might have been the one they owed money to. 3. The money is the suspicious thing here. Since he never returned HOME after his night out on the town, this means he never took it out or he had some other stash in his NY apartment. How many other secret pockets of money is this man hiding from his wife? Is he involved in gambling or money laundering? Guess this will remain unsolved.

For Postmortem: Crater's reference to "going swimming" felt like a tell that he knew he was in trouble. Given his ties to Tammany hall and possible affairs with mobsters' girlfriends and wives, that detail seemed like a grim reference to death at the seaside rather than an odd day plan.

For postmortem: Given that he was a judge AND someone living an adventurous Playboy life on the side, Is it possible he was taking that money to pay off a BLACKMAILER, And something went "wrong" during the exchange? This could have had to do with something in his personal life (an indiscretion with a married woman, a botched abortion for one of his showgirls that killed her, illegal gambling that would have shamed him professionally etc) Or perhaps something from his professional life (a case where he had been paid off to make a certain decision)
