Spanish Speaker Romance Language Challenge: European Portuguese, Romanian and Chavacano
As requested by our viewers, we are exploring the Portugal Portuguese vs. Brazilian Portuguese and see which one I do better at. PS-Didn't do too well with Brazilian Portuguese. I will also look at Romanian, the forgotten Romance language and see how similar it is to Spanish. Is Romanian a Slavic language or Romance language, I wonder after listening to it. Finally I will look at the Zamboangeño variety of Chavacano (or Chabacano). This is a Creole Spanish from the Philippines. The goal is to challnge myself to try to understand these Romance languages.

As a Brazilian, I understood Romanian much more than I expected. It’s clearly a Latin based language. Sometimes it sounded like they were about to speak Portuguese instead of Romanian. This feeling never happens when Spanish, Italian or French speakers start to talk. I loved Romanian, I didn’t know that it sounded so beautiful.

I am romanian, and for me is so much easier to understand spoken Brazilian Portuguese, instead of Portugal one. With the written Portuguese though I have no trouble understanding it. We do have a lot of similar words.

The girls are speaking a "vlog" version of romanian (romgleză). Many of the words they are saying are not romanian, are english with some romanian accent and something 😂. You should search for more mainstream vlogers which speak proper romanian, not this wanna be vlogers.

Nathan Bastos is right History of Latinamerica and Philippines might seem similar, but it is acttually different: No spanish settlers or few in the Philipines, while Spanish men came to the Americas to settle and mixed with the native population. Latinos are mixed, that is proved by genetics, surnames, language and culture. Philippinos are not. Many surnames sound spanish, but aren't authentic. They also don't speak spanish nor are mixed.

Also, old portuguese with spanish as well. As I was reading this novel "O Guaraní", I ran across multiple words that are currently in the lexicon of the general spanish speaker. "Borracho" and "Perro" are one of those.

All romance languages where closer in the past. But To understand each other nowadays depends on the context, sometimes is easy understand Italian or French or Spanish, but sometimes it’s impossível. I’ve learned French and Spanish and even so sometimes I can understand what you guys say, because it depends on the context. For exemplo, in a supermarket almost everything is different, nome of fruits, food, condiments, herbs, everything is completely different with different roots, so intelligibility among Romance languages depends on the context

The Romanian girls are probably from the eastern part,as I am .Words are similar but to be honest we have a more polish/russian like accent here .Meanwhile,in the South, it sounds much more italian-like,at least to me .Another issue we have is some words that have slavic and latin synonyms .For example :prieten-amic(amigo) dragoste-amor .A lot of examples can be found .That is why us ,romanians might have an easier time understanding other romance languages but the others might not .Hope I helped a little bit:)

I am a native Chavacano speaker of the Zamboangueño variety, and I am also a subscriber of Rhea Bue. She even said in her other videos that her Chavacano was not perfect, 'cause she is now living in Metro Manila and she is used to speak Filipino/Tagalog language and English language there in the Capital Region, or sometimes in Taglish. She lives for a long time far from Zamboanga City, and she doesn't have a lot of ways and opportunities to still use, practice, speak, write, and communicate in Chavacano language. That's why her Chavacano is very mich mixed in with words from Filipino or Tagalog language and from the English language. Try to react to an Original Chavacano Song Composition and Music Videos from the official KZbin channel of the City of Zamboanga, or some local news in Chavacano language from TV Patrol Chavacano (just some parts or clips of the entire video news program).

@@ConvoSpeak I am not sure, but I don't think there will be copyright issues on making a video or reaction, or using a music or song video as a content or reference if it is just a local song, music, or music video in a local language in the Philippines. The songs, musics, and music videos in Chavacano are more or less just local ones, and not that even popular in the whole Philippines. The best Chavacano songs, music, and music videos are found in the official KZbin channel of the City of Zamboanga. I am not sure if these have a copyright from the original owners, producers, performers, creators, lyricists, and composers or musicians of the videos, or if these are already properties of the local government unit of the City of Zamboanga. So maybe there wouldn't be copyright issues on Chavacano songs, music, and music videos or compositions, or maybe there would be. I am just not very sure about these. The news program I mentioned (TV Patrol Chavacano) where the Chavacano language is mainly used, is a local or regional program or version of a national TV news program (TV Patrol), and I guess that might have copyright issues because it is owned by a national media company. I am also really not sure about this one. I am really not sure what to best recommend you to do or make a reaction or a video about.

Most of these expressions and sentences at their basic iforms are the same as Spanish, but we Chavacano-speaking Zamboangueños sometimes add a little bit of local creole flavor to them by adding other words or expressions that reflects our culture and ethnicity, and the creole nature and characteristics of our native language and its influences from other languages of the Philippines. Here are the expressions or sentences: Gracias! = Thanks, Thank you, Thanks to you Muchas Gracias! = Thanks a lot, Thanks to you a lot, Thank you a lot, Thank you very much, Thank you so much Muchisimas Gracias! = Thanks a lot more; Thanks to you a lot more; Thank you a lot more; Thank you very, very much; Thank you so, so much Miles de gracias! = Thousands of thanks Miles de gracias contigo! = Thousands of thanks to you ("Contigo" in Chavacano is the objective pronoun "you" or can also mean "to you". The word "gayod" or "gayot" can also be shortened into "gad" or "gat" only with those sentences I mentioned that have the word "contigo". "Gayod, gayot, gad, and gat" means "really, so, much, very, a lot, so much, very much, or a lot more" and are used to add even more emotions and emphasis to the expression or sentence as you are expressing or giving thanks or gratitude. The origins of these words or terms are from the Visayan languages of the Philippines, especially from Cebuano language and or the Hiligaynon or Ilonggo language, which are two of the major local or regional languages in the Philippines.

Well the Romanian girls in the video had a very 16 years old conversation with English words, most people over 40 would have a hard time understanding what she was talking about, while the written phrase was pretty much composed of Latin based words ..

Not really. In whole eastern Romania we sound like that. Me and my family all sound like that. (e becomes ie/i when not followed by a vowel. Its just easier). Only for Bucharest and Muntenia they sound like italian.

You got luck, the Portuguese guy spoke with a HEAVY Northern accent, which is quite similar to Galician. So naturally, if you are used to listen to Galicians, you will have an easy time listening to Northern Portuguese (And all of Portugal really). Written Portuguese and Brazilian should, "in theory" be identical, there are no grammatical and a few vocabulary differences, but you can easily tell the difference between a Portuguese and Brazilian text by virtue of which words they choose and their order, not to mention the use of slang or informal language (which is an immediate dead giveaway).

My parents come from Lisboa, I never learned Portuguese but still understand it and speak it. I did not hear anything strange when he spoke actually. Nothing that would make it easier for Spanish and I am sure Leo (Portuguese with Leo) is much easier to understand than this guy.

There are also things there about our local arts and cultures, festivals and celebrations, politics, government, tourist spots and sceneries, architectures, etc. You can also watch and listen to some local news program in Chavacano language like the TV Patrol Chavacano news program. Phonetically Chavacano sounds at times like Filipino with a Spanish twang but it is not intelligible to the point where if a Chavacano gave some detailed instructions 1 paragraph one, I would not be able to confidently follow the instructions. some similar sounding words to Spanish makes not Chavacano intelligible to me, and I am from Valladolid Spain, arguably the best spoken in Spain. So if I did not satisfactorily understand how any other Spanish speaker could either. Some similar words, some similar phonology, but too jumbled up to be appreciably understandable. Portuguese on the other hand is a piece of cake...the most similar major language to Spanish hands down, and it leaves French, Chabacano, Italian, Catalan, Romanian in the dust..........Educated Portuguese and Spanish speakers can have a conversation about anything and understand each other almost perfectly, each one speaking to the other in his own respective language..

I'm not Diego, but as someone who speaks both languages, I think it would be easier (or "less hard") to learn Portuguese first because the phonetics are more complex, and once you get to a comfortable level, you'll be able to understand Spanish reasonably well, and have an easier time learning it. If you start with Spanish I think it'll be a lot harder to make the switch.

I can find synonyms in romanian for every word you don't understand, that can be understood by all romance languages. You said some words from romanian sound like in english, that is because the base of english is latin too.

As a Portuguese I would opt to call Brazilian just that and Portuguese just that. Much like Dutch and Afrikaans. Which is indeed a bit further off but also has a lot of different loanwords from other (native) languages much like we see in Brazilian.

The most "official" version of the Romanian language is known to be spoken on tv news. As a romanian, English and Spanish speaker, i find it odd that i understand almost effortlessly any romance language, especially if it is spoken slowly or written. However, they don't seem to understand us as easy. Anyway, after learning Spanish in the south Spain (Andaluzia), you can understand even klingon :)

"Diutay" came from the Visayan word "jutay" of the Cebuano or the Hiligaynon/Ilonggo languages of the Central and Southern parts of the Philippines, and it means "small". Though we also know and use "pequeño", but we rarely now use it. "Maga" came from the other languages of the Philippines especially from Cebuano, Hiligaynon/Ilonggo, and the Filipino or Tagalog languages, and it has two meanings and functions. That's why the spoken common, familiar, casual, and colloquial Chavacano is really mixed and sometimes considered as not really true Chavacano.

@@ConvoSpeak There are now many well-written, well-illustrated, printed, and published books in Chavacano de Zamboanga primarily are children's books, story books, legends, fables, fairytales, folktales, and even illustrated comic books too. I guess they are not available online or in digital form, and their printed versions are just limited to children and students in public and private Kindergarten and primary schools, daycare centers, etc. I and other Zamboangueños even really want to have and or avail one, but I guess they're only limited for use in schools and for primary and basic education and for secondary.schools too. Two famous books or literature in Chavacano de Zamboanga are the two locally-translated books and two different Chavacano translated versions of the story "The Little Prince". I don't know if they're available and sold elsewhere. I don't know if there are any Chavacano literature available and free online. If there are some, they're not written in the agreed and suggested correct spellings of Chavacano words nor in the appropriate grammar and syntax of Chavacano based on the most recent official sources, publications, grammar books, orthography books, lexicography books, dictionaries, studies, and researches by our local government unit and other people and groups. I am sorry if I can't suggest any books, writings, stories, or written literature in Chavacano de Zamboanga.

I am Portuguese, I am in the very same position as him. I have no clue what you are saying. Written and spoken it is just???Sure: litoral, distantare etc yes..Plaja also..and that is about it. 6 weeks ago I talked to a Romanian woman...But in English. It is obvious Romanians feel they have a true latin language close to Italian and somewhat less to the others. However: it does not seem to work as well the other way and I have noted Rumanians can get a little irritated by it. Like we are excluding them (???). But it is not on purpouse. Many SPanish have problems with my Portuguese. Since it is simply not so easy for them, not because they dislike me or my language.

If you want to hear properly spoken Romanian, I recommend "Zona IT" KZbin channel. The presenter there named Dan Cadar speaks it fluently and clearly as any Romanian should.

There are hundreds of dialects in Italy. These are like different languages. Everyone can speak the universal language of Italian but then there is a secondary language (dialect) that they speak in their region among their own people. They are not understandable even by Italians. I am from southern Italy and I cannot understand the dialect/language of Venice or Milano. Likewise, someone from Venice cannot understand the dialect of someone from Naples or Sicily. To communicate, they must speak the formal national Italian language to understand one another. In fact, I can understand Spanish better than some dialects in Italy.

Well as Portuguese, i can say Brasilian telenovelas taught me every slam words, so easy as that, spanish for portuguese is easy, like..we go to spain two hours we can understand everyone. Not everyone can understand us..........As Romanian (reason i found this video) i was amazed how easy it was to understand some saying......i mean. It's like the most similar language to portuguese there is. And vice versa. I think it's because of celts and arabs and not latin.

Course, they are intelligible however somethings it's not easy to understand each other, especialy if local speaker engage in a conversation and you are not used to its vocabulary and vocal pace...
