The Rav-4 TRD Off-Road is very capable, but we overheated the AWD system and it had to have a brake. The rear clutch packs just aren't strong enough to act like a fully locked diff. Other than that it is a great city vehicle that can go off-road on those occasional trips.

Please give this thing the full TRD Pro treatment, Toyota! Skidplates, even another two inches of ground clearance, a limited slip diff etc.... not everyone who wants to go off-roading wants a big Land Cruiser/Sequoia or 4Runner, Tacoma or Tundra.

It will never happen simply because no one would buy it. By the time you paid the amount of money that Toyota would won't you could buy 4Runner Which let's face it in the Toyota lineup is where most people are going to buy if they want to go off road with an SUV. But if we're completely honest by the time you get to that point to do any full TRD package on a RAV4 People would just buy a Jeep, Especially the Eco diesel Grand Cherokee and Wrangler.

To me to be worth the extra it needs more ground clearance. An extra 2 inches of Ground clearance and a couple of decent skid plates would help alot. But then it would probably drag down the MPG. But if it's going to be an off road modal,it should have something extra to make it better off road than just tires and tuned suspension.

Active torque vectoring is better in the corners than LSD, as it can power the outside wheel. Saying that, I would prefer an LSD, but it is worse for fuel economy. We all made that choice by voting for communist parties who hate their own citizens. Most of the recent changes are based on fuel consumption regulations.

Stephen, You were very diplomatic and quite sensibly, you elected not to strand this RAV4 in a muddy section of your trails. @@shaunr5450 Today's SR5 4Runner 4X4 is cheaper than this 'On Road' RAV4 as it is equipped. The lower spec FJ from a few years back was much cheaper. TMC is selling bare-bones 2 door Prados in every region but North America which happens to be their biggest market.

People’s view on cost is so short sighted these days. You need to consider the cost after purchase for repairs, longevity of the vehicle, and resale value, averaged out over the life of the vehicle. When you do that you will see that a small initial premium is vastly outweighed by the overall value. Buy it. Fix it when it breaks. Drive it to 300,000+ miles. You can buy whatever Toyota you want and it will be less expensive than about anything else out there. There is a reason you don’t see longevity reviews for vehicles on this channel beyond 200,000 miles. They would basically alienate every other manufacturer out there if they did.

I feel like every company tries to put a different spin on their cross over all-wheel drive systems. They all literally do the same thing. We have a Tiguan that has no selectable modes and would do (has done) work like that no problem. Some spin a bit more, some spin a bit less but they all figure it out and send power to all 4 wheels. Except CR-V's. We have one too and their awd is terrible (and unreliable).

This vehicle is extremely disappointing. The power train is good and sets it apart from the CVT competition (thinking Forester), but the entry level Forester is a superior off-road capable vehicle...it isn't even a matter of price point here. A base RAV 4 with AWD capability would be a better buy than this....not sure what this has to offer on the trails that its stable mates don't already offer. Throw some good tires on a base AWD RAV 4 and write OFF ROAD on the side of it and jack up the price to +$40k...lol. No. If Jeep could improve in the reliability department, the Cherokee would run away with this segment (off-road capable subset).

I have a Rav4 Trail 2019 which I'm leasing. The wife loves it and I must say me too. Will I purchase a new Rav4 TRD? Perhaps not. Because I think for better shocks, springs, and the off-road tires, it's not worth the extra cost. Also, it should have skid plates. I would like to see a few changes inside. Like a passenger power seat, GPS system, much better sound system, more speakers, and say floor lights. Also brighter lights inside. When will they ever give the Rav4 say 25 or so more horsepower? I never had a Toyota before and I looked at a lot of reviews on you-tube of SUV's. Was almost going to purchase a Jeep Trailhawk in 2019. I believe the Rav to be the better choice. The number of sales for the Rav4 over the years is massive. If only North America auto makers had as many sales. Also, with our cottage in North Frontenac I have driven it from Granit Lake to the cottage which was impressive. I normally do that on my ATV.

TRD off road badge is losing its meaning to me when they don't have at least a small suspension lift considering its got a TRD suspension. They should have given it 2" more ground clearance for the off road version. There's always a trade off for fuel economy but not bad when it's slight and you want more off road capable. They could do something really cool and add a motorized front lip that comes down to increase aerodynamics when on road and when off road modes are selected it retracts into the front bumper. You could get back some fuel economy from the lift and also better break over angle with that idea.

The fact that they put the TRD badge on a car without coming with skidplates and a bit more ground clearance, like going from 8.6 to 9 inches, pisses me off. After offroad tires, skid plates is the most important factor for offroading.... If you hit a rock and break something you won't go very far, worst you can be stranded hundred of kilometers from civilization, downright dangerous. Would not do mild offroading on the RAV4. Better buy the cheaper adventure and spend the 3k-5k difference on a skid plating job and better offroad tires. Toyota take note for 2021 model, if you add the TRD badge, add skidplates as a basic, minumum requierement. BTW what is the fording/deep wading clearance for this, 500mm? I would be a great alternative for those who want a smaller mild offroader, Hilux, Tacomas, 4runners and Lancruisers are huge.

Can confirm what he said on pricing. I've got the RAV4 Adventure. Tbh, that's a better value since it does everything without the premium price the TRD package (11k more) commands, which is mostly cosmetic on the RAV4s sadly.

I would love to see it go against goldmine hill or tombstone because the offroad test you guys have done on some of them you were trying to push it by far against the standard crossover limitations because i seen you guys tried to compare it to the jeeps and to me it isn't all that far ieep is mainly only offroad made you can compare the wrangler vs the taco trd pro and the wrangler would clearly win compare it against the Ford edge or vehicles in the similar way i have took mine offroad a few times and never had a issue so far but I will say a couple items I do hate is the undercarriage skid plates and that the approach and depature could have been better

I thought the 2019-2020 had 8.4" clearance. What's a reasonable amount of clearance for a mass market compact SUV?
@BHUFF
@BHUFF 4 жыл бұрын
8.6 on the trd , not enough ,9.4 would be about right, with one size larger tires. This would still work for mass market

The rav4 adventure is better than the trd because the adventure tires are bigger than the trd ones and with the adventure has a better interior with the lunar rock than the trd interior, it’s better the adventure than the trd because they both are the same, the trd doesn’t have skid plates or more ground clearances de it’s expensive than the adventure model, so with the adventure I can get the BFgoodrich ko2 off road tires and lift up for more ground clearance to go off road and keep up the same trails with the 4Runner Tacoma and tundra

The Subaru all-wheel drive system is better. But neither the RAV 4 nor Subaru is really an off-roader. As long as running over fallen leaves on a paved road is off-roading for most people, this TRD will do fine.

All the comments are saying that they are going to put a TRD badge on a Prius, minivan, etc. What you don’t understand is that Toyota is just saying that it is most capable off-road, OF THAT MODEL. It’s not saying it can go everywhere the Tacoma or 4Runner does.

If you want a capable off road crossover, buy a Jeep Trailhawk model. Toyota is for boring people because they make ugly, boring cars that are just "reliable". I'd rather buy a Compass or Cherokee Trailhawk any day of the week.

Compass are completely garbage and pretty pathetic off-road. If you Jeep Wrangler are nice off roaders (had a rental last week) but poor daily drivers. Best daily driver, off-roader with bulletproof reliability and insane resale value go with 4runner.

@@James-il3tq Boring! Toyota is boring and we all know that Jeep is the only off road company. Toyota doesn't make off roaders, they make mom vehicles. The 4runner and Land Cruiser are as capable as a Renegade Trailhawk.

The difference between the Toyota and Subaru is reliability. The Toyota likely won’t puke its head gasket at 85k miles, the Subaru just might.

Is it rally/off road suspension without skid plates or a mall crawler with TRD badging??? This RAV4 is confused. Between this and the TRD Camry they have watered down the badging..
