The Rav-4 TRD Off-Road is very capable, but we overheated the AWD system and it had to have a brake. The rear clutch packs just aren't strong enough to act like a fully locked diff. Other than that it is a great city vehicle that can go off-road on those occasional trips.

By the time you paid the amount of money that Toyota would won't you could buy 4Runner Which let's face it in the Toyota lineup is where most people are going to buy if they want to go off road with an SUV. People’s view on cost is so short sighted these days. You need to consider the cost after purchase for repairs, longevity of the vehicle, and resale value, averaged out over the life of the vehicle. When you do that you will see that a small initial premium is vastly outweighed by the overall value. Buy it. Fix it when it breaks. Drive it to 300,000+ miles. You can buy whatever Toyota you want and it will be less expensive than about anything else out there. There is a reason you don’t see longevity reviews for vehicles on this channel beyond 200,000 miles. They would basically alienate every other manufacturer out there if they did.

This vehicle is extremely disappointing. The power train is good and sets it apart from the CVT competition (thinking Forester), but the entry level Forester is a superior off-road capable vehicle...it isn't even a matter of price point here. A base RAV 4 with AWD capability would be a better buy than this....not sure what this has to offer on the trails that its stable mates don't already offer. Throw some good tires on a base AWD RAV 4 and write OFF ROAD on the side of it and jack up the price to +$40k...lol. No. If Jeep could improve in the reliability department, the Cherokee would run away with this segment (off-road capable subset).

Because I think for better shocks, springs, and the off-road tires, it's not worth the extra cost. Also, it should have skid plates. I would like to see a few changes inside. Like a passenger power seat, GPS system, much better sound system, more speakers, and say floor lights. Also brighter lights inside. When will they ever give the Rav4 say 25 or so more horsepower? I never had a Toyota before and I looked at a lot of reviews on you-tube of SUV's. Was almost going to purchase a Jeep Trailhawk in 2019. I believe the Rav to be the better choice. The number of sales for the Rav4 over the years is massive. If only North America auto makers had as many sales. Also, with our cottage in North Frontenac I have driven it from Granit Lake to the cottage which was impressive. I normally do that on my ATV.

They should have given it 2" more ground clearance for the off road version. There's always a trade off for fuel economy but not bad when it's slight and you want more off road capable. They could do something really cool and add a motorized front lip that comes down to increase aerodynamics when on road and when off road modes are selected it retracts into the front bumper. You could get back some fuel economy from the lift and also better break over angle with that idea.

The fact that they put the TRD badge on a car without coming with skidplates and a bit more ground clearance, like going from 8.6 to 9 inches, pisses me off. After offroad tires, skid plates is the most important factor for offroading.... If you hit a rock and break something you won't go very far, worst you can be stranded hundred of kilometers from civilization, downright dangerous. Would not do mild offroading on the RAV4. Better buy the cheaper adventure and spend the 3k-5k difference on a skid plating job and better offroad tires. Toyota take note for 2021 model, if you add the TRD badge, add skidplates as a basic, minumum requierement. BTW what is the fording/deep wading clearance for this, 500mm? I would be a great alternative for those who want a smaller mild offroader, Hilux, Tacomas, 4runners and Lancruisers are huge.

The difference between the Toyota and Subaru is reliability. The Toyota likely won’t puke its head gasket at 85k miles, the Subaru just might.

Why no skid plates? Three reasons. 1) Added cost 2) Added weight 3) You don't need skid plates at Costco.

Looks like TRD is no longer TRD. Great review.

Those approach and departure angles look like they'll get you stuck in a mound of dirt and there's no rear locker or recovery points? Thanks, but I think I'll buy a Jeep Cherokee.

I think it looks awsome if nothing else.

Is it rally/off road suspension without skid plates or a mall crawler with TRD badging??? This RAV4 is confused. Between this and the TRD Camry they have watered down the badging..

Lack of skid plates seems to be the biggest oversight. They should be standard on the Adventure/Trail model but to not even be available on a Toyota Racing Development Off Road model makes no sense.

Lack of recovery points also

The 1st through 4 gears actually work in the 8speed, transmission the 5th through 8 gears are just dead weight just like the Avalon, camry and highlander, not sure about the land cruiser.

No skid plates, no tow hook/recovery points, no improved approach/departure angles. How is this off-road worthy?
