this work is based on Lord Krishna's mythology. It describes him dancing on the hood of an evil thousand headed serpent who lived in the mythical lake kalindi. The song is set to a bharatnatyam(classical South Indian dance) number, hence the emphasis on rhythm. The vocalizations that are not words correspond to th percussion and the foot tapping and hand movements of the dance. This story is called kaliya mardanam which translates into bashing up of kaliya( the name of the evil snake)

People have already explained the mythic context of this peice as Lord Krishna's dance on the hoods of a serpent. Only thing I want to add is this: Classical Indian performance arts take a unitive view - the story, the lyrics, the singings, the music, the expression, the dance - everything combines into a unified multi-sensory experience with a spiritual aim. When perfomed, these become both creative expressions as well as divine experiences. The dance of Krishna on the hoods of the serpent is actually a spiritual allegory - on one hand, it represents the whole manifest creation as the Dance of the Divine. And at a more personal level, the serpent represents our ego, our pride and selfish, which are removed by the almighty.

The two young are very curious in learning carnatic and perform. Very soothing voice. He is master in giving perfect vocal coach. He releases every rythmic notes for every step to dance. I think it would be perfect to watch with barathanatyam dance collaboration. Nice video from you.

Hi, in my thought they play the song based on tala not raga like arunagirinathar sung thiruppugzhal ( the thiruppugzhal song were sung by saint Arunagirinathar in 15th ce in tamilnadu. Which was all songs were not based on ragas but talas)

The "solfa" syllables that you heard are dance syllables meant to emphasize rhythm. They are rendered using a raga scale. Look up Konnakol to see something similar.

Not improvising. These are swaras which are musical notes. Also you can see with their right hand they keep tala (rhythm). Usually it is aadhi tala in cycles of 8 beats.

First of all, there is a story being told here .. in great detail, i.e. by describing the incident of a five-year-old's battle with Kaliya (often Kali), the resident 100-headed serpent in the river Yamuna and representing evil, where the 5 year old KRISHNA, and Indian God, conquers Kali and subdues him, and then prances ecstatically on his 100 hoods, breaking into a magical dance! The details include the sounds of the deadly battle, the roar of the waves of the mighty Yamuna river, the battle sounds of the huge serpent, and the sounds and antics of the baby-God, post-victory. The sounds are expressed in the form of illegible (scatting??) phrases, and the descriptions are expressed in the legible notes. Read those. And I must admit you are a brave guy to get into a very deeply classical, ancient, spiritually laced, ultra-perfect performance by GURU Pai and his illustrious and young disciples. Carnatic (south Indian Classical) music is difficult to interpret for north Indians like me as it's different from Hindustani (north Indian classical) music, both being unlimited and vast subjects! The accompanying musicians are extremely talented and have belted out a flawless performance to the T using some of the most ancient instruments of India. That's why it's so perfect! All Indian classical artists are allowed to and do improvise within a very clear perimeter of rules that just cannot be breached. Their training is lengthy, sometimes constantly learning throughout their lives, and meticulous. In the Indian tradition, the GURU is God himself. There is nobody more loftier or sacred than the Guru. So view this performance slowly and READ the story as it is relayed. You will understand what's happening and can even imagine the scene by listening to the sounds of the description .. sounds that do not have a literal meaning. Enjoy .. oṃ sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ sarve santu nirāmayāḥ sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu mā kaścidduḥ khabhāgbhaveta। oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ॥ May all sentient beings be at peace, may no one suffer from illness, May all see what is auspicious, may no one suffer. Om peace, peace, peace.
