I have a olive 2008 turbo; I love the car. got it 5 years ago with 40k miles and it now had 99999. about to start modding it and have it parked garaged. i have myself replaced every single maintenance thing and beyond during this time on this car; including the rear coolant distributor and so on. you just have to realize that fir the car to run brand new you have to replace all rubber/plastic parts on german cars; its cheap; ive done it on my mint 30k miles '01 ML55 AMG; it is just the way it is. the engine and trans are bulletproof; ive hit 175 in it in the highway; it redlines like a champ; keep changing fluids and tge maintenance shit and shut up if u love the car; i know i do; i cruize to miami from dc in it all the time; no issues; shit breaks but ive never had it on the side of the road; my amg radiator popped and leaked out; i still drove it 20 miles to park it; these cars are awesome;;;; again be prepared to replace all rubber and plastic shit on these religiously to keep them running brand new

I was about to reply a big ?!?? because I initially misread your comment and thought you were saying that you hit 175 in the ML55 lol (I know they are quick, but 340hp in a heavy SUV would never hit those numbers) I wonder what the top speed on a Cayenne Turbo is? It’s probably close to that. My fiancée wants one, so I’ve been looking at them lately. I’ve owned Porsche sports cars before; although maintenance is expensive, they are more reliable than most other German cars (the last BMW I owned, a 4.4i X5, had over $60,000 in repair work done under warranty including an engine *and* transmission replacements. Also had a 7-series that always had issues).

For ignition coils read spark plug leads, these are obviously a serviceable item. Also coolant should be regularly changed and the system fully flushed otherwise you cause damage to the rads, water pump and coolant pipe work the example here is either an epic leak possibly caused by the kinked pipe or a diligent owner regularly flushing the coolant and preemptively changing the thermostat. A whole lot is to be said for owner maintenance. I’d sooner see an invoice for an item a caring owner replaced, such as Mobil oil rather than a garage invoice for 9 litres of XYZ (or nonspecific) oil. Another example I am fitting Brembo discs (rotors) and pads to my wife’s X5, who wouldn’t be happy at that if she sold her car with that invoice. There is great satisfaction in doing things yourself and having peace of mind in a job well done, that peace of mind is also a transferable asset when selling your vehicle. Also if you’re only paying for parts rather than parts and labour then you can afford the price difference buying superior aftermarket or OEM when you’re saving hundreds on labour (labour).

I picked up my Dream SUV, finally. Not the year I wanted but it’s like 95% there. 2005 Cayenne Turbo. Paid $9,200 cash, and that’s after tax/license/registration. Took it to an independent Porsche Mechanic (Gerber Motorsports) and had them do a full inspection. And I pretty much have to catch up on maintenance stuff. Coolant flush, brake fluid flush, tie rod boot, transmission fluid change. Bought it with 117,000 miles, now it has 120,000. I still need to upgrade the diverted valves, as I only sometimes get full boost. Half the time it sticks at .4 bar. But I love it. Bose Audio, with some software glitches on a few of the modules. “Target firmware” on 4 of the 5 modules is blank but “actual” is present. I have the DVD Navigation with Satellite radio. No phone support and no phone button or SOS. And has center diff lock & low range. The sweet spot for me would have been the 2008-2010 with front & rear locks, but none were even remotely close to me within my budget. I love this thing. I get pretty close to advertised fuel economy ❤️

Congrats! The 955 turbo is still a great suv. Also, the 957 turbo doesn't have front and rear lockers so you're not missing out. The off road package offered a rear locker and electronically disconnecting sway bars but I believe 2008 as the last year...very hard option to find. I’ve driven my 2018 Kia Optima for 45000 miles with no issues . Only Gas and oil changes all while averaging 32 mpg in mixed driving and up to 42 mpg driving from Connecticut to South Carolina . And have done that trip at least 10 times in 2 years

I have an '04 base Cayenne with 117,691 miles and they are indeed reliable. Still going strong! Bought it used in '08 for less than 30,000 miles and it's running in perfect condition! I've personally done all maintenance.

Great insight to cayenne running costs. However I do feel you have been unlucky with yours. I have a 08 GTS with 135000 miles and haven’t suffered half the issues you have, for example only needed drive shaft, coils front discs and air suspension sensor in last 35000 miles.

I have a 428i with a moderate boost chip. Funnest car I’ve ever had. At 80k now. Concerned about repairs after 100k. May look into older model low mileage Infiniti FX. My mechanic said Nissan quality went to shit after Renault(?) bought them. My mechanic for the last 20+ years is (well WAS until he moved last year) Scotty Kilmer. Looking at Acura RDX. Seeing what turbo boosts can be had for that.

I have a 2003 Porsche Cayenne S 2003 and it has lots of engine, transmission and suspension problems, when giving it more than half throttle, the transmission or Driveshaft makes a loud clacking noise and the engine is starting to knock. Transmission has been rebuilt 2 times and I've had this car for ~13 years We were on a dyno and it should have 340hp, we got 210hp from the dyno. It was great while it lasted, has amazing engine / exhaust sound and the customer service from porsche is amazing, they even gave me a Porsche Cayman GT4 for 2 weeks while my transmission was being rebuilt. Overall a great car, but problems started at 180.000km / 111.846 Miles. Door sometimes doesn't open, I have to open the trunk first in order to open the doors. The battery is dead really fast and it also takes a lot of oil. I also had to replace Ignition Coils quite often, Spark Plugs too and I get a check engine light about once every month. Overall great car for its price (4.000€ here in germany) but replacement parts are expensive and I would not buy a porsche SUV again.

Many people here comparing German cars to Japanese and you just cant. Different philosophies yield different products oriented towards different buyers. Japanese will stress test then detune everything as they prioritize longevity and peace of mind (aside from a small handful of performance cars). Europeans will pack with the latest tech, trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of smaller engines to get the best of all worlds for buyers who demand it even at higher prices, some bugs & failures, and annoyance dealership visits. Some even get lucky and claim their European car has been dead reliable. My 2020 335i was a money pit. My 2016 M2 made it to 56k miles without a single issue. Go figure. That said, I've rarely driven a Japanese car that was as exciting as cars out of Germany, Italy, etc. They generally dont really have an answer to M, AMG, S/RS, Ferrari/Lambo/Alfa, etc. To say "my Japanese car is sooo much better because it has X miles on it with only 1 brake job" is pointless. We get it. Gotta pick your battles. I'd say daily a Japanese (have u checked out the latest Prius? Amazing tech) and keep a European car for occasional romps to exercise your love of driving, if you like driving that is. Or lease and let your warranty save your ass as needed.

I completely agree. My Lexus RX330 is an amazing appliance. It's super reliable, cheap to maintain, and comfortable. It's what I use for errands. However, my Porsches are the cars I take out when I want some fun.

Wow. There I was browsing autotrader for older Cayennes and now I dont think I'll continue. My experience with a higher mileage 2013 911 and 2014 Cayman was the same, they were expensive maintenance queens, mostly electrical issues. You do need quite the budget to keep a higher mileage Porsche going I suppose.

I appreciate the comprehensive and honest review. No Cayenne for me. I'm not a badge shopper so I can't justify the extra expenses, trips to the dealer/repair shops, headaches, and wondering what's going to go wrong next just to be able to say "I drive a Porsche". Yes, many of issues were repaired under warranty but the best warranty is the one you never have to use. I'll stick with Lexus.

Hi I am looking at a 09 cayenne diesel / with the Stepney tyre mounted on the boot door / Driven 80k Miles here in India. This is the same V6 TDI used in Toureg n Q7. This came for only 09 n 10 model year here and very rare in the used car market. As for as the reliability goes can I compare it with the same model year n same mileage 3.6 V6 petrol counter parts. I've owned relatively high mileage BMW X5, Mercedes GLE (not to mention a Ford Escape and Jeep Cherokee). Purchased a 2014 Porsche Cayenne S in 2019, so far no problems (other than the analog dash clock no longer works...but who cares). Been the most reliable of the bunch, but like any used vehicle, it's just luck of the draw, guess I got lucky with the Porsche.

Porsche really isn't famous for reliability, just build quality. They use better materials but their electronics/mechanicals, especially now that they share more with VW on that front, are not especially reliable. They will run to high miles if you're religious about early maintenance and care. But then, what modern car won't?

Have an ‘04 Cayenne S with 260,000 kms. Use it as a daily driver in Toronto, Canada. Very few minor issues that I can live with. Quality of ride and handling outweigh issues any day. Highly recommend driving one to see for yourself.

@@emailcal1 There will always be lucky folk. I had a terrible run with my 335i for instance but my M2 was dead reliable. Both my Cayman and 911 (991) had tons of issues from door panels delaminating to windows failing, climate controls crapping out, etc. German cars are a roll of the dice and Im with you, I love them regardless but know what you're signing up for.

Everyone makes great cars. Everyone makes junk that won’t stay on the road without buying your mechanic a swimming pool. I had a friend with a Honda Accord that ate camshafts and oil pumps on a fairly routine basis. Yours was driving for 70k miles if I recall before you got it. How were they driving? Just getting the maintenance doesn’t tell you if they were racing off-road rallies in it. My experience with a Jeep Grand Cherokee has me soured on them. Others swear by them.

I went with CarChex. The policy was underwritten by The Warranty Group. Amazing warranty policy but they unfortunately won't touch the Cayenne anymore. It's probably because if me. I paid $3700 for the policy and it paid out over $10k.

Good lord. We switched from Porsches (2) and Audis (7) in the early 2000s for similar laundry lists of maintenance stuff. Since then it’s been Lexus - ES (the most vanilla car I’ve ever driven lol), GS, LS, RX (2) - and other than timing belts and regular maintenance, nothing ever goes wrong. Ever. Yep, aside from the GS, they’re not as fun to drive as german, in my opinion nothing is, but they’re beautifully done, with impeccable fit and finish and are nice solid rides. I love the way the Cayenne looks, especially the one in this video, and it was going to be the only thing I was going to look at along with a LX470-570 for a SUV purchase this autumn and this video saved me time, Advil and probably a lot of money lol Great video and a beautiful car that you clearly take good care of too. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

I have an 08 GTS with only 41K miles (super fun to drive!) Runs beautiful!!! When I first got it I was told to just keep up on the maintenance and you will be good, So far all I've done is driveshaft + coils , oil changes every 3K + brake pads Getting ready to do transfer case fluid and rotors on next brake pad change It is garaged for the most part.

The newer cayennes are pretty reliable. I suggest the S. V6 is okay, but it's not fast. You'll want a little more power so it actually feels like you're driving a performance oriented suv.

The engine is much more reliable. Some other issues will still occur. Overall, a cheaper vehicle to own but will still go through brands, tires, and suspension components at the same rate.

I would like to say European cars seem to hold up better in Europe such as BMW and Mercedes etc. Can't really comment on Porsche however. I owned BMW and Mercedes when I was in England and had little issues.

Maybe because they're made there and to a higher standard. Many "German" cars are made in the USA for our market and those have been plagued with issues from the start. Also, do you folk in EU put as many miles on yours as Americans do? I doubt it. Roadtripping here is very common as we dont have the abundance of fast trains and dirt cheap short flights.

It seems that every 5-10 thousand miles, it needs to go to the mechanic.... lol I was about to buy a 2009 S with 15,000 miles on the odometer for $22k but you talked me out of it. I’ll stick with Land Cruisers.

15k miles is basically a new car. For 22k it's a steal. I'm thinking of buying a 955 with 3.6 L VR6 engine, no air suspension and with 100k miles (costs around $12k, but this is not in the US).

Maybe a land cruiser doesn’t feel as nice to drive and the interior is not in point to the super luxury standard but Toyota make their engines to long last.

Batteries will hurt when they come due on a Tesla. You burn through tires at about +30% over comparable due to increased weight. You can still get electrical issues. I read a lot of people were unhappy with the update that was pushed to them over Christmas that buried rear window defrosting in a sub menu so it could have a game on the main touch screen. Nothing is perfect (except 911’s , those are just beyond amazing).

I m a Tesla MY owner as well and in last 20k miles not a single issues other than a broken windshield from rock. I spend around $10 dollars for 250 miles or driving(charging at home in NV)

What has happened to German cars reliability they used to be Rock Solid and extremely well built in all regards now every single one of them is a ticking time bomb and they should be ashamed of the overall quality of their vehicles..technology rushed to market instead of true quality .

You are absolutely right. I bought a used 2008 Audi A6, it was a leaky roof. Everything was always breaking. Germans lost their respect in car manufacturing unfortunately!

Man, this is too much waste of time to have to repair so much every 5-10k miles. I have owned few Lexus vehicles. My first main repair comes after about 130k miles for two of my vehicles.

all the repair bill could of got you a new lease for 3 years. it would be cheaper. sure engine and tranny is solid. seals and little parts break every 25,000 miles. your bank account be feeding this porsche.
