Wow, we hit 100 likes so much quicker than I thought! Thank you everyone! I’m a man of my word and will post details for a package giveaway next week ❤️ keep an eye out! ALSO, quick bit of extra info. A few people commented that I should have mentioned armour as the Carrack will be more heavily armoured etc. This is true and sorry for dropping the ball with that, I should have touched on it. However, I will say that we still don’t know enough for it to be a key point yet. The Carrack could be a lot more armoured as it is an ex military vessel after all. BUT, in the same vein, the Odyssey could be more armoured than we thought making it close and therefore not too important! Either way, I’ll pin this so people know 🤗 thank you for bringing it to my attention and to help others with their choice 🥳

i think a carrack better suits a nomad an odyssey is more the flagship for mine ops why not consider a 600 or 890 if your nomad lol maybe even a BMM the odyssey seems to have one of the poorest values in game as it does to little not well enough.... i pick a carrack because its fast and no ship can scan like it. the odyssey has a great sales pitch and hype but you will be left with a useless limon.

I see the Carrack as a long range explorer that is meant to be alone and map planets jump points and locations. And I see the Odyssey as a survey ship meant to be with a group as a support ship to map for mining and finding a place to set up a base.

If this was true, the Carrick should be much better armed. It’s incredibly weak weapons wise compared to the Odyssey. That is supposedly fleet reliant…. It should be flip-flopped.
@Borengar629 Жыл бұрын
@@The_0G_Chad I have to respectfully disaggree there. Weapons are in no way a viable metric for the capabilities of an explorer. The Carrack's weapons are pretty good at what they are supposed to do. They are a deterrent to keep enemies at bay until you are able to get away. An explorer is not meant to be a fighter. Frankly I do not understand why every ship needs to have weapons in general. The tought of an explorer should never be "can I take them" but instead "can I get around them". And taking the Carrack's sensor suite into account when played correctly even it's comparatively small weapons should never come to bear.
@-JustHuman- Жыл бұрын
@@The_0G_Chad The Carrack is a military ship, and also comes with heavy amour where the Odyssey is a totally civilian ship. Weapon wise they are not far off, as it does have 8 size 4 vs the the 6 size 5. But the Odyssey have a larger blind spot on the low sides it seems, unless they move the turrets a bit. Not to mention the amount of weapons you can get on target at one time, as it's maximum is 2 turrets forward or side, where the Carrack can hit with 3 forward and sides much of the time, so you lose less of the firepower. The Odyssey is also a much larger target and we don't know if the next pass over the Carrack changes the shield and power plant to capital too, as they have shifted things upwards a bit on most ships. The 3 modules also had talk about a defense one, what it means we don't know but it could be a turret, shield or missile pod option.
@-JustHuman-11 ай бұрын
@@theMedicatedCitizen The U-boat is the Polaris. The Carrack is a exploration vessel, think more like the nuclear icebreakers or the name sake a Carrack from the olden time. It isn't meant to be a man-o-war, a line ship or anykind of fighting vessel. All it's weapons should be easy to maintain, and be enough to scare or keep small groups at bay until it can leave, it should run more often than it should fight. I would rather they made the rear turret remote controlled, and moved the guns on the side turret so they were locked facing forward when not in use and added maybe 2 AI controlled defense turrets (forward around the canopy and behind the mapping room on top) to take out missiles. I don't see missiles as a no go, but it shouldn't be forward and backwards. it could be made as a utility mount missile system. Meaning it's a size 1 to 3, that is reloaded from the inside. Make it so it's in the turret corridor facing forward, so there is room to make a hatch you can open on the inside in the corridor to reload the system.
@schlagzahne67418 ай бұрын
@The_0G_Chad pretty sure when he said alone, he meant ALONE. Also odyssey with only size 5 turrets and 3 of them is kind of meaningless for defense as well

The Carrack explore ship needs a Quantum Fuel refinery like the Odyssey. A mining Module would also let one of the pods be a mining laser. Add both might use 2 or all 3 Modular Pods. Carrack needs a main hangar that fits the fighters of the time. The military would want the Carrack to have the ability to launch a fighter to help protect it, and let it refuel / repair any fighter in its bay. A military ship would have these basic refuel / repair and refinery as long range, long duration military mission Requirements.
@vengeance1 Жыл бұрын
One good point to consider, is that the Carrack has its own repair bay. And with maintenance mechanics being shown off recently it might be a lifesaver to have a dedicated repair place to, I assume, repair and rebuild larger components. All that's needed then is a refinery module that can scoop in hydrogen, and possibly be fed minerals from those drones (mining arms) for other necessities (quantum, repair materials, etc). Wouldn't be half as efficient as the Odyssey for sure, and certainly impossible to turn a decent profit exploiting distant resources, but could allow for that self-sufficient exploration flight model we crave. Maybe a botany module too, grow your own food. Point is the Odyssey seems like less of an explorer and more like a long range surveyor/miner. Not seeking the unknown, but exploiting the untapped.
@durtyred86 Жыл бұрын
Just a bit to add. The Carrack has heavy armor. That will play a significant role in it's survivability compared to the beefy shield of the Odyssey. Not to downplay the Odyssey by any means. I just feel armor can't be sapped or shut down like a shield can with distortions or aiming at the eventually implemented shield generators. Something to really think about.
@GFAPlays Жыл бұрын
Yeah very nice point and one to consider. The reason I didn’t mention it really is because we still don’t know how armour will work fully or when it’s coming. We also don’t know how armoured the Odyssey will be. It might not be all that different. It was a little too far on the “what if” scale to add as a point for the Carrack. But totally agree, something to think about down the line 😃

I own both the odyssey and Carrack and the Carrack looks like an obvious winner. I think the odyssey will be a very boring ship and simply used as a small base for an understaffed crew or a cargo/personnel transport for fleets in deep space. If you look at these ships with long range traveling in mind and from players time being spent aboard. In my eyes the carrack is a far more fun ship for all the crew to do deep space exploration or even simply traveling. The odyssey obviously can travel further but what is the crew doing? I really believe the most exciting job or task that the crew will do is fuel the "exploration" ship. The carrack is expected to travel a great distance as a norm and will simply operate with in its reach. But the Carrack will be able to do a vast amount of exploration with a bunch of tools to do so, giving task or jobs for the crew to do and have fun. As for the living quarters that just seems like a missed opportunity i don't know what players would want to do with a bedroom in star citizen vs using that room to put in at least a pool table like on the carrack. That seems like so much more fun for players then "well we have a lot of dead air traveling ....... I'm going to go clean my room...."

Excellent video, GFA. Odyssey was my choice with the 1 size larger hangar being the feature I think is the most important to me. You mentioned some ship pairings that make a lot of sense, like Prospector / SRV / Terrapin. The Vulture could also be pretty great if you just wanted to chill and fill your 252 SCU with RMC and Construction Materials. If you put a Surveyor in your vehicle bay, you could potentially build bases further out than anyone. That is if and when we get solar systems that are so far out past the settled systems where fuel is impossible to obtain.

I own a Carrack (and love it very much), and at some point down the line I'd like to get an Odyssey as well! The major downside I'm seeing for the Odyssey that wasn't mentioned in the video though, is that, with the current concept art I've seen, ALL of its turrets are on the dorsal (top) side, meaning that it has very poor turret coverage, and would be very easy for decent pilots to sneak into its blind zones and hammer away at it with impunity, making it only a matter of time before those Capital-class shields fail. The Carrack has nearly perfect spherical turret coverage, and a majority of the time can actually bring 3 of its 4 turrets to bear on a target. Even if they were to move one turret to the ventral (bottom) side, the shape of the Odyssey doesn't lend itself well to such a small number of turrets being able to provide adequate coverage no matter where they're placed. I get that the Odyssey isn't really designed for combat, but if one is to tout "true self-sufficiency", being able to deal with very real and persistent threats far from any support should be high up on that priority list, and with the turrets as they are now, that task could prove difficult. Just something to consider. 👍

What remains to be seen is if Exploration gameplay will be something teams of players will want to do, or if it will be more of a solo profession. Getting enough people online to crew these ships and who are willing to be taken where the pilot wants to go and do instead of where and what they want to do will be an interesting question to answer.

I may upgrade the Aquila or 600ie to Carrack at some point once we fully understand exploration gameplay loops and ship capabilities a little better. There are quite a few exploration ships on the market currently but no one really knows exactly what they can do.

The carrack is old news, it's a great garage and little ambulance carrier even though there's no way to get the patient to the medical bay 😂 but hey it was a good effort. The Odyssey offers ample room for small ships and same little ambulance with a route to move the patient to the med bay, can mine it's own fuel, has beefy shields and is only 2 years away from being able to be played with, even though CIG already established the misc design and said they would push ships out that has their design language established faster but oh well 😂

I don’t have any of these but I have the Arrastra, the Orion, the Galaxy and the Polaris. I’d consider grinding the Arrastra into one of these frankly. Part of me says Odyssey would be the better bet as the logistics of supporting that would be fair easier to coordinate then the Carrack. I also have a love/hate relationship with the Carrack as most of the times I’ve died due to stupid glitches have been because of issues with the Carrack. One is a built in multi-use all rounder battle explorer "fast stamina turtle Capital Ship" that has a setup like the Serenity from firefly and the other Is like Star Trek Next generation but smaller than a capital and the carrack is a TNGeneration exploration ship with more scanning capabilities than the DLC spider boss in ghost wire tokyo, and modularity to change it's uses in the future, decent cargo space(given an update will be needed) personally I'm doing an exploration vessel and I plan for scanning and selling map and recourse data to be one of the main avenues of income for the org also I've been watching TNG recently finally got around to binge watching it and ds9 so I love the idea of a captain's quarters! It's a shame about the cargo bay (since I have the LTI Syulen warbond) and the crew quarters being stuck as bunk beds... together both ships are almost the enterprise top decks I hope in the future they make a capital explorer ship that has the best of both worlds With a massive hangar, stellar scanning, a captains quarters thats extra special and then individual quarters the size of the carrack's captain's quarters (it's a bigger ship after all) Like you i'd love both ships the Odyssey didn't interest me at first but the large cargo bay (that looked deep enough to fit a Syulen) and the refuelling capabilities make it extra special! I'll be getting my DUR back when I get the exploration pack so if I change my mind in the future I could always save money up and switch from the carrack to the odyssey as a long time freelancer user (from an aurora in 2.4.1 upgraded to titan in 2.5/2.6ish then due to the glitch and the poor original interior design I kept getting ejected through the ceiling due to needing to crouch so I got as freelancer then a year or 2 back I upgraded to the DUR) I realised because of all the upgrading despite having a DUR the package is only 3 months insured and then Ollie43 advertised with a tour of the debut Syulen I just happened to have £80 spare money and no clue what to spend it on until this point other than the freelancers and maybe the 400i I hadn't shown any intrest in any other ships especially the alien ones they looked cool but I wasn't gonna buy them, (this is a round about way of getting to my point but bear with me) I knew immediately that the GatacSyulen was gonna be my go to solo ship it ticked all the right boxes: -Vertical- I've been saying the game needs a vertical facing rocket ship for a long time! -Unique- Not just it being alien but it being a trend setter as I believe we'll see more unique ships like this that blow people away! -Aesthetic- Grav-Lev sheik and premium while still looking like an ancient alien technology using work of stone and metal with glyphs, also theres light switches for mood lighting and a purple light trail that follows you're path! -Maneuvrability- yeah it can float like a raft when flying it in vertical landing position and the controls are all different but I adapted, the speed of which this can turn and twist in flight is insane) -Storage-It has external cargo making it far easier I don't even need to open the door, that being said it does make EVA entry difficult with the small door and package delivery missions can be painful until you get used to how since you can't use the elevator to put them on other floors(my advice stack the packages)! -Alien sounds- The engine in cockpit sounds like the PS2 intro got stuck on a note and stayed there and I love it it! -Pricing- When I saw the vid I was like I love and want it but this is probably gonna be like the price of a freelancer maybe more, so it was a shock when I saw it was a little more than a Titan and under £100 ================================================ To my point: I had to get that ship and I did and I love it and sad to say despite being a long time DUR lover the Syulen is my top favourite so the DUR is now in second and potentially the carrack will be 3rd it depends I really want a 400i Exploration so the carrack may end up being my 4th depends how my exploration org goes! But what this meant is case the Syulen is a Warbond I bought it outright so for the first time I had a second pledge with all the same accessibilities to the game as my original package, this means that I can melt the original one without any loss and still play with my Syulen but most importantly it means I can use the money from the melted package to put towards buying the expedition package with the DUR in it that's $150 store credit plus the $60 in gift cards I bought recently to put towards! see the fun thing about the expedition package is it's not a warbond meaning I can buy the package with store credit, so I can save up and basically the DUR that's in the expedition package is technically payed for and even if the expedition package still disappears before i'm done saving next year I can just outright buy another warbond similar to the syulen with LTI and get either a carrack or perhaps even the 400i that I want so badly i'd still need to buy the vehicles and I don't think i'd pass the $1000 and be a concierge by doing that but I wasn't too fussed about being a concierge anyways it was just a sweet bonus (that and the terrapin that I otherwise wouldn't of bought) as for vehicles I am interested in the bikes more than anything though a halo-esque buggy vehicle would be nice too! for now though i'll work towards that, in the meantime I just got the BD3 deluxe edition ordered and payed for next year and my idea of getting a beyond VR headset has fell through for now unless I come into more money so I don't need to buy an iphone with faceID lidar to scan my face for the custom vr headset meaning that money can go towards the bike and the money I had until now for the bike can go to getting the Lord title and Daggerfall (high fantasy fable-esque castle manor) on ESO which sits around somewhere just under £44! any leftovers might go to other stuff or into saving for the expedition pack i've bought alot of games and downloaded some for free this year off the epic and steam stores so now I got a ton of great games for my new hardware to use in ultra settings 4k I hope! ------------------------------------------------ I recorded alot early this year and recorded streams from twitch too I got a backlog of 50 so i'll be editing that mostly i'm a variety content creator but I finally figured out my path as a creator: I'll be keeping all the long running single-player games on my main channel as edited recordings (that and valheim with my friend) then on the alt channel I made for me and all my friends that I hope will be a group in the future I will be streaming games like Star Citizen, ESO and so on making it all go to the live section! i've also got a 3rd channel specifically for marvel games but I'll do that when i'm taking a break from other games I got intrest in the insomniac spidey collection and midnight suns but I may also throw DC games in there too since I bought the entire arkham collection on offer this summer! ------------------------------------ the money I got right now my financial state might not be so fortunate anymore so I won't be able to splurge so much which is why i'll be making so much content and try not to burn myself out in the process I will be doing streaming on YT for the future though I got fed up with twitch streaming so I am switching next year when I am done with my edited videos! also I plan to make use of my new 40's series to do more AV1 gameplay including star citizen since it looks better in the recordings!

Great comparison. I've been a backer for a while, had accumulated some $0 CCUs, and ended up with a very cheap (in SC terms anyway) Carrack and BMM. BMM was always meant to be a stepping stone as it went up in value. This IAE I picked up a BMM -> Odyssey CCU (with a Carrack -> Odyssey in the buyback). Like you, I think they fulfill different play styles. The Carrack is laser-focused on systemic exploration using its jump point antenna, cartography features, and drones. The Odyssey is for people who want to disappear into the back and never come back. It doesn't have any specific exploration equipment, but can be outfitted with a large variety of ancillary vehicles. I like both, but I really need to see how exploration as a gameplay loop goes. What does system mapping actually entail? Are the drones useful and fun? What can we do with ship radars beside just spamming a ping that does a cool graphical effect? It's a game loop we have little info on, and that's what's really going to make these ships IMO.
@-JustHuman- Жыл бұрын
Must say I disagree on that, as capital components means it can't change or repair them in the field, where the Carrack can make, change or repair it self if anything happens. As it has only large components and can print (when it gets into the game) new components too. Add to that the moduls really mean it has a very open book on what it can do, as one of them was going to be a refinery modul.
@hanns1401 Жыл бұрын
@@-JustHuman- Based on the engineering coming into the game, repairs can be made to components with a hand-held beam. Actually replacing destroyed capital components will require a visit to the yard since they can't be removed. So the Odyssey has indefinite range, assuming you don't get wrecked, which I think is about as good as anyone can ask for. We don't really know the extent or limitations of the Carrack's repair bay yet, and the refinery module was only ever player speculation as far as I'm aware. CIG never said what the Carrack's modules would be. But, even if the Carrack did have a refinery, where's it getting the quantanium from?
@-JustHuman- Жыл бұрын
@@hanns1401 Capital components can never be replaced by hand, and patch repairs only last for so long. There is also the question about redundancy, I would rather have 4 larger components than 1 capital, I do hope they add more to the Carrack. But we don't know how impact-full the military grade amour is in the game either, so it might mean more than extra shields, as they say it's simply going to ignore weapons fire under a specific class. The tank vs pistol talk they talk about. Don't know what class yet but 5 or 6 is properly the limit, so size 4 and under won't penetrate. The repair aspect was just said it had the facilities to repair it self, and that the drones could also help with that. The moduls were mentioned in a talk about the Carrack years ago, were it was said as one of them could be a refinery, fuel tanks, cargo, living space or a sciences pod. The idea was you could leave the pods on a planet and come back after them later too. "The Anvil Carrack has been the vanguard of every UEE exploration effort in recent years. Featuring reinforced fuel tanks for long-duration flight, a highly advanced jump drive array and a dedicated computer core room that allows it to put the maximum processing power into jump charting operations. Originally a military exclusive, the Carrack is now available for civilian use as a pathfinder spacecraft. Features on-board accommodations to allow for truly self-sufficient flight, including crew medical and repair facilities, and a mapping-oriented sensor suite capable of always charting a route home!"

I don't feel like these two ships really are in the same class ( narratively, not gameplay-wise! ). The Carrack feels more like a long-range, mid-duration missions ship where the Odyssey fulfills all the needs to be an actual self-sufficient long-range and -term expedition vessel. It really is more like a mobile base with the mining and refining capabilities, it has more storage and hangar space and it gives all crew members their own cabin to retreat to, giving them their own little sanctuary, which probably can be really helpful for their mental health on months- or even years-long expeditions away from home. It also looks way bigger and mightier allthough the Carrack overall does look better IMO...
@lystic9392 Жыл бұрын
Since the Carrack can repair itself to some extent, I'm actually unsure which of the two is meant for longer duration trips. Personally I don't plan on going on long trips, but the placement of the Odyssey radar, the 2D map and additional method of regaining Hydrogen fuel make me think it may exceed the Carrack at planetary exploration. That sounds really exciting to me, but we have so little data to go by.

Im thinking of doing more achology than map scanning with the Odyssey which would probably need to relay more on other space/ground vehicles . You can have some extra ships that fly with the Odyssey that can fit in the hanger as an escort fighter and easily refuel them by just emptying out the hanger temporarily. My plan load out is have the ursa and some rangers in the ramp hanger. Then have a terrapin and a C8R Pisces along with a light fighter ship that flies with the Odyssey I'm hoping the fat furry will be able to fit.

I hope there's more large exploration ships in the future. I think rn they made the carrack kinda the powerhouse but with more large exploration ships it will help create competition. I personally have a oddesy as I like it's design style and what it does better. Just feels like it's better all around. Would like to see some more large bois and maybe a capital ship or two for exploration. I'd say the endeavor would be one but that's more classed for science/food/medical which tbh idk what science gameplay is gonna be.

I really like both, they make a great team because of their stark differences. Lets sum it up with Carrack as a Modular Drone Wielding Expeditionary Pathfinder. MISC Odyssey is Mobile Expeditionary Base or Command Ship. You almost made a complete list of Carrack functions. Here is the BIG item you missed. The four arms [2 each side] on Carrack that will extend and function to both find AND stabilize [for it self] random unstable wormholes. Odyssey can go further because it has to while Carrack can find its own short cuts via wormholes. A note about fuel, I never need to buy Hydrogen for Carrack, it makes its own via scoops. Odyssey will too. Ody will also mine and refine quantanium for unlimited endurance.
@JFrombaugh Жыл бұрын
Pretty close call, but I'd go with the ship that's already flyable & has been confirmed to have the better scanning/survey/cartography equipment. For now. The Odyssey very nearly overcame this disadvantage for me because I really do value how it seems designed to cater to civilian explorers, hence the focus on flexibility, individual crew bedrooms, etc. - everyone knows I'm a sucker for power-to-the-people stuff in fiction, and the Odyssey feels more like the kind of ship you might find dry docked in Levski or something. However, I don't feel that the Odyssey is significantly more of a bail-from-society-to-live-among-the-stars ship than the Carrack in the end. Like, that whole "mine your own fuel" feature seems really situational to me; even if we're all mentally underestimating how easy it'll be to accidentally run out of quantum fuel in certain star systems (vast size, Reputation locking you out of space stations, etc.), I feel like most players would rather just call someone with a Starfarer than spend possibly hours hunting for a quantanium asteroid just for the refueling ability. Especially since most Carrack/Odyssey owners will be officers of orgs once we actually have all the proper multicrew gameplay stuff. It feels to me like the Odyssey walks the line between being an exploration ship and a mini-Kraken...and falls somewhere in the middle. I think if they locked down the exploration aspect of it better, if they just ditched the refinery for a cartography room and made it so the main difference between the two was Modules & Drones vs the larger hangar, I'd be voting for the Odyssey.
@BigBobBlazer11 ай бұрын
Most ships can do exploration. Every ship has its niche. The Odyssey looks to be tailored for transport and land claim finding. Since land claims aren't in the game atm, that might explain zero effort from CIG to make the Odyssey atm. Odyssey does not have drones, modularity, cartography deck with superior scanning etc. But if your main concern is deep space exploration, for the fun of it, Odyssey will work, as will the Carrack, Polaris, 890 and so on. CIG marketing department is selling the Odyssey as an exploration vessel. But it really fills no holes that we don't already have filled by other ships. Get the Carrack. It will likely be years before the Odyssey ever gets made.

I have the Carrack, and passed on the Odyssey this event. I picked up way too many other ships including the Merchantman, Orion, Arrastra, Galaxy, and several others. I have a feeling we are going to see the game move much faster now that CIG is moving the S42 devs over to SC. I get that people feel like it will be up to five years for some of these capital ships to make it in game based on the past 10+ years, but I think it will be a speed roll over the next two years. With all of the game mechanic sneak peeks they have shown us, I'm betting things will be much sooner than people think. Full of bugs for quite a while I'm sure though.

The Odyssey’s armour MIGHT not be that dissimilar OR because of the Carrack being military, it could be 3 times that of the Odyssey! It’s too unknown at the moment really. But it is valid, maybe I should have at least mentioned it for a moment.

I just upgraded my Odyssey to a second Polaris. I also own a Carrack. My only decision point was that a Polaris right now is candy, close to release. When the Odyssey gets built... I think MISC will be the next brand to be worked on. Finish the Hull series, the Expanse, the Odyssey, Endeavour, and do a gold pass. They have most of the gameplay done, the design system is flushed out. With Pyro coming out and hopefully Nyx following it, it would make sense to get cargo, mining and develop the science and medical gameplay. Aegis, Anvil, RSI, Origin are fleshed out. I do not think they would go for Crusader at this point, or Consolidated Outline, Kruger, Drake... for those they can get some one offs. MISC is a mayor player in the mining, refining, hauling and in a lesser degree science and exploration. Just have some LTI tokens around to upgrade.
@TRabbit1970 Жыл бұрын
Buyer be ware. I would only drop serious coin on a fleet that has no bugs, or a very small set of minor bugs that don’t seriously impact gameplay (e.g., bounce that damages or blows up the ship or other ships associated with it, loss of gear dropped on the floor, falling through floors and elevators, trapped in elevators). One needs a history to understand and moderate or mitigate the bugs by player behavior. It’s a shame that the focus seems to be on pushing new ships with more features when the base set of features still don’t really work reliably. At least roll out upgrades to the older ships it’s the release of new ships meant to compete with the older ships. And…when will v1.0 roll out?

I feel like anyone willing to drop serious coin would have been playing for a long time already to be fair. Everything you said is correct regarding the current state of the game though. These two ships yes are exploration ships but are fundemantlly different hence why they have different features. The Odyssey is a expedition vessel meant to explore new worlds and map new systems meaning it has to be self sustaining and it also means the hanger has to accomodate for that as well. While the Carrack is the patherfinder meaning its mapping the best routes for both Civilian and Military use hence why it will be the best with quantum beacons, route surveying etc. hence why the hanger isnt the most amazing as its mapping is designed around providing intelligence to its users. I also my self switched from a Carrack to a Odyssey as its more Generalized due to its Frontier exploration role it also is a jack of all trades in some regards which is what I need I dont need a dedicated mapping ship.
@ufeelinselfrighteous8470 Жыл бұрын
carrack will generate SIGNIFICANTLY less EM, as its a dedicated military ship. CIG has stated that MISC and Drake will be locked into industrial components and run like industry ships, that means larger Sigs. Carrack will map whole systems QUIETLY for long periods of time

I think it depends on what you want to do. For me the carrack wins as it comes with rover and snub, it can do exploration and cargo. Data/scanning. Medic, drones, manufacturing/workshop. Cartography room. Not even considering I payed 350 for it, it still beats the odyssey with ease
@mhchx3 Жыл бұрын
I had my carrack for a very long time since 2013, but last year I upgraded it to a Odyssey. I loved the original Carrack concept art but I don't like its shape now. Also because the Carrack was way cheaper back then I essentially got a way cheaper Odyssey than the norm and that always feels good. And the people making ships will have years of experience when they start making the Odyssey, the Carrack is an old ship now and no amount of rework can undo everything that is outdated, some ships are just gonna be more well built than others it's just the way it is. And finally I really like the MISC aesthetics they are really unique and you immediately recognize they belong in the SC universe. Anvil is very generic and everything inside from floor to ceiling is in shades of grey. But before I watch the video, you know the cool thing about big exploration ships, is there is the wrong choice really. They all offer a wide range of possibilities and I think it's easier to just go with the coolest looking one than it is for combat or industrial ships.
@AW-po7jr Жыл бұрын
Another thing to consider: Cockpit. The Carrack has this beautiful cockpit with unmatched views in its class. The Odyssey on the other hand has this typical „Misc“ Cockpit, like all the other Misc ships with very limited views. Given that we spend most of the time in Cockpit, this is a huge disadvantage for the Odyssey. I don’t like Misc ships mostly because of its cockpits. Maybe it’s just me.

I wanna see the 600i explorer added to this competitor list once the rework is out. I personally feel that the Odyssey isnt a fair comparision to the Carrack. They did sell the Odyssey as having a minimum crew of 1, and it's on that basis that I bought it. I had hoped to pack it full of all the things a long-termed solo adventurer could need and then disappear into the 'verse for ages and ages. However I'm starting to doubt that strategy as I'm now pretty sure that they are going to make it very difficult for the solo player to get very far before things start to go wrong with the ship. I just checked and it still has "Min Crew 1" stated on the spec page for the Odyssey. It's becoming harder to understand what they mean by that?

Next the QT rock has to be at a mass that can be cut, which with a single Sz2 mining laser will be very hit and miss. Of course QT may be more (or less) common in the 'greater' verse as we only have Stanton at present to make assumptions from. As for refueling other ships, please note this is only for ships that fit in the hanger and the re-fuel is going to be on-foot/manual refueling. The terrapin can't map jumpoints as a Carrack can, and isn't made to find them either. It's a scout for fleets really, as not all scanners are the same. That was also the reason why the Carrack got the drones and antenna array, as you need both to find and map a jumppoint, or "risk" it with your ship as it can be a one way jump. The Carrack is the explore that finds the jumppoints and maps them, and then explore the system. The Odyssey is the surveyor coming in after and staying in the system for longer to find out what is there to mine. They can slide a bit into each others role, but they can't replace each other, they can do the job but not as good as the other. The Carrack can take a refinery system, and could deploy land miners and scanners, but it can't bring the same amount as the Odyssey.

To me the Carrack is designed to get to a far off location, map the area for a few days and leave. Its firepower is underwhelming because it is likely going to be the vanguard of a larger fleet of military vessels to follow. Better shield and armaments and outfitted to handle anything that comes its way from fighting, to mining, to exploring, to whatever. This one is my pick for sure.

The odyssey can do everything the Carrack can do less the repair bay and drone stuff. If we’re speculating, let’s have it right. Modularity isn’t as good as people think. Simple as. The scanners will only increase its range but not offer something the other can’t do (as confirmed by CIG) and in which case, just stick a terrapin in the hanger. @@GFAPlays I respect your comeback. I maintain that these two ships are designed to fulfill a very different gameplay loop. The Odyssey is likely to stay on the planets surface. The carrack is exploring deep space. There are too many people putting these Two ships vs one another when they will provide completely different experiences. And these game loops will have to be fleshed out. The Odyssey is concept and the carrack might as well be as it is one of the least functional ships vs its intent flyable

I completely understand where you’re coming from and of course respect your point of view also. I agree they offer different loops but still think they both fit within the “explorer” role. I’d say the odyssey will have a much larger range and will be more suited to the whole “let’s go here, see what’s happening”. The Carrack will pave the way of course, but the Odyssey will walk the path and be able to explore in more detail without having to go back for fuel etc. At least in my mind 🤣 as I say in the video, both are amazing choices that complement eachother rather than compete with eachother :) either way, I’m excited for both individually! And you’re bang on the money when you say the Carrack is still lacking the majority of its intended role. I hope CIG lean into finishing these ships properly next year rather than making new ones etc

@@GFAPlays good discussion. I just fear that the people wanting the starship enterprise experience will think the Odyssey will fulfill that requirement. When it really won't. That's more the carracks intent. To your point there are also a number of ships that can provide space exploration and discovery of Jump points etc. Whereas the Odyssey is kind of unique. People who want to explore get the carrack. People who want to process outposts, process land claims and survey data go Odyssey. I wouldn't want someone to spend $700 on an Odyssey thinking they will be the next Captain Picard.

@@shield-sc for sure. I think it’s a wait and see thing for me. I do believe that the Odyssey will offer that Star Trek feel and be a fantastic exploration ship personally. Outside of being able to map jump point from a further distance, I don’t think I see the Carrack having much more than the Odyssey. That being said, I could be wrong. Let’s just see what happens when it comes out etc and the mapping mechanics are in the game. Then we’ll be able to actually see. But for me and my exploration needs, I’m going odyssey 🥳 personal preference etc for now, it’ll remain a CCU upgrade until release haha

Concerns with Odyssey; Requires shipyard to replace components, no starport is capable of doing this. No redundancy of components, having single capital components might have more hp, but no backup. Poor Shield regeneration, both in regeneration start and regeneration cycle timers. Ground vehicles at cost of cargo capacity. Limited to one grade of fuel for both hydrogen and quantum, so any mined/refined or scooped fuel mixes with premium star port purchased fuel, thus losing benefits of the better fuel. Refinery only accepts ore from Odyssey mining laser, will not accept other sources. Turret blindspots, due to placement has massive blindspots. Limited armament as once missiles fire they require reloading and thus costs cargo space. No military grade armour. Just these alone makes the Odyssey stuck close to systems that have support for capital components. As many have started to believe the Odyssey isn't an out in the black exploration ship, but more planetary survey ship, where its Refining and fuel tanks allows it to hope between planets to find resources to sell location of, or for nearby mining fleet operations.

Also, being a capital size ship, may have certain drawbacks in regards to its massive chonkiness. Landing and taking off is more tedious. Wormholes have size limitations. Larger ships with larger power plants have larger signatures and are larger (and slower) targets.
