Something I was taugh from a very young age is to compare the per/kg price. Often something may look cheaper, lets say its 12$ but the container is slightly smaller than the one that costs 15$. But when you look at kilo price, the 12$ is 50$ per kilo meanwhile the 15$ is 42$ per kilo.

The biggest trick I find (which applies more to electronics) is how they advertise stuff is on sale. If you do your research, you'll find everywhere else has it for the same price, it never goes back up to the "regular price" and when it's not on sale, the price doesn't change much. On top of that, there's usually a reason it's on sale (last years model, not selling as expected, etc.)

They both taught me and my siblings how to be cognizant and wary of everything in our world at large. We were, and still are, able to see through the smoke and mirrors of many come-ons. Also, add to this, that we were all also taught at school how things really were in the marketplace of life (Pun intended). Unfortunately today the majority of people entering adulthood are woefully unprepared for the onslaught of marketing practices and have, furthermore, been conditioned to follow advertising to their peril.

I can say working now at a retail store, I see our big marketing gimmicks in our store and it actually does affect our customers who come in. Like right now our cosmetic department is having a free gift with X amount of value of purchase. Needless to say, I have eyed some customers while I do my daily work routines and have noticed them seeing the gifts and end up purchasing more just to get the free gift. Even having sales where things are discounted always seem to work. People see the discount and do end up purchasing more, depending on what items are on sale. So these small changes do affect shoppers. It's why or at least in my store, men's clothes, men's shoes, children's clothes, children's shoes and home is all in the back. Because cosmetics and women's/junior's clothes tend to be upfront/upstairs. So you have to walk through the store to get to the area you need to be in.

This vid is very good,,it's true. I am on SSI now ,,,, I am so CAREFUL, but I see MANY others who are also on SSI, who buy LIKE CRAZY ! Especially those who can't afford it. I've known some of these as I worked for two grocery store chain in the US for years. The one that really frustrates me to no end is the signing of items on the aisles. It is annoying to see a sign hanging with only have the slots full. Its actually quite frustrating when you don't know where things are. Having to ask an employee can take away from their productivity. Another thing I have noticed in Canada more recently, aisles are being re-organized so that items that typically would have been on the same aisle are now on different aisles. You need to go through 2 aisles to get everything you are looking for. Also, with the directional aisles now from Covid 19, you end up going up and down aisles you never intended just to get to the right direction! They must be raking in the dough this year.

I'd like to see this study done also with people who are poor, and on a budget. How much that effects their impulses, etc.. I personally am poor and yeah I buy stuff at times I shouldnt but I dont because I am confused or lost or see a pretty sign, its cause I HAVE to shop deals, I HAVE to use coupons, and buy what I can afford. The shopping trip is 100 percent different for when you are poor and when you have money. I know cause at times I had money and could get what I wanted, and mostly I shop poor and on a tight, tight budget. So, this should have a supplemental second part with poorer individuals in smaller stores, etc where they have to shop. Not just rich people who can splurge and blow any amount on whatever, whenever. My MOM on the other hand, she blows past her budget and into bill money all the time, I catch her doing it so much; but she never seems to realize half the time she even got caught up and filled her cart. Not that I NEVER get caught up, but this really needs to follow and study poor people too. Also, when she said that no one has the power to make someone do what they don't want to do... that is not even true. People do stuff they don't want to do all the time. Even I have broken my own ethical codes and rules at times, which I didn't want to do, because a reason came up that made it something I did, despite not wanting to do it. It is a detachment feeling when you do something you don't want to do for someone or encouraged by someone, etc.. What I did was write a final for a friend for her online college course. As a former tutor and someone who never would in my life do anything like that for someone, it was for her, and thus I did what I didn't WANT to do, because I HAD to do it. I couldn't let her fail, and that primal urge to protect someone you care for, can over ride what you want to do at times, or what you believe is right. Aside from that, there are countless other ways around the world where people make others do what they dont want to do, sometimes it can be very very bad, too. So, not sure what she could have meant by that? As I said I didnt WANT to, but influential feelings and such from another made me have to do it, because I had a primal urge to protect her and that over rode my ethical coding of things I will or will not do. Be it as it may, some may say that is not the same thing as to what she said, and yes I know I will take flak for it, but do I know it was wrong? Yes. Do I regret it? Not exactly. Did I honestly WANT to do it subconsciously? Not really. I wouldn't have done it for anyone else, and in my whole life I never have. So, people can influence other people to do things they do not want to do. That is a fact. Most times the personal defense mechanisms we have will prevent such actions, but there are times where urges make you ignore those or other things make you unable to ignore what you are influenced or told to do. I know I am blabbing, it is late, so take this as you will. Still, good episode. Love the psychology of shopping and marketing

I don't think it works on poor people based on my experience, also i've studied a bit of psychology once and found an interesting study about it: Apparently we have 3 sort of minds, there is the rational mind, the emotional mind and the animalistic mind. those go in conflict most of the time but when it happens the animalistic mind always win overall (think of survival instinct and strategies) and the emotional mind wins over the rational mind. What you see deployed is the emotional mind being manipulated and trumping your rational mind. the reason i believe it doesn't work against a poor or a former poor person is that his survival instinct is telling him to save as much as he can and that destroy all the psychological barriers laid by the emotional mind. You won't feel guilt nor rushed out nor will you buy what you do not need and often will take your time to find and take the best deal.

Necrodius no wonder she asked you to write the essay!! Look at ur comment! Anyways. . I do think it works on some "poor" people. You haven't met my family! And at the same time I see people that are more stable and care more about their finances overall. It all depends.

A couple of thoughts - first of all, if you visit Ikea enough, you'll find the trick passageways to get to where you want to go quickly. Because after all, it's not good for business if your staff have to walk around the show room so many times. Second, use some self control techniques - like staying on a budget, sticking to a list, considering your other expenses in the near future (I have a list of these in my head AND on my fridge). Also consider thinking about what emotions are driving you - for example, are you sad or hungry? Beware thoughts that say "I deserve this!" or "Everyone else has this." or "Is this really a deal if I have no plan for it or for this much of it?" Bottom line, have a serious tough love conversation with yourself so you are not manipulated or sabotaging yourself.

First, I make a shopping list. Second, I look at the store sale flyer for anything I need to buy. Then, I write down the price or estimate price next to EACH item. Afterwards, I add the price of each item on my list + tax(don't forget to add state tax) Now I know how much money to TAKE to the store(leave your credit cards at home) I add $5 extra just in case there was a miscalculation (go after you ate you meal: two benefits on that 1. You are NOT tempted to impluse buy on snacks or stuff you don't need. 2. Burn some calories. ☺️ I stop doing this for a while and noticed I was spending $200-$300 a week instead of $85-$120 week at the supermarket making me short on cash to pay my other bills or gas. So I doing this method again and only spend $120 for food for 10 days for a family of 6 people. We eat meat and rice everyday.

Here's a tip. Make a budget. And make a list of what you need or really want. If what you're picking up is not on that list , walk away or don't even go near it. Put it on a wish list for later and think about it. But think about it, wait on it, and do not buy it right then and there. Walk away.

If I get confused in a shop, I lose interest right away, get frustrated, get out and never go back to that store ever again. I hate time wasting. Time is precious! Once lost, I'll never get it back. I've been to IKEA once and that was the last visit in 33 years! Same like dating where we shop for potential spouses as commodities. Talk about consumerism with little Return On Investment in every aspect of life!

I actually find grocery shopping kind of fun. So I do end up buying things I want more than I need a lot of the times even when I have my list. It makes me happy. But for the most part, what is there to regret? It'll all just end up in my stomach in the end :)

People need to take responsibility for themselves. It is not the stores’ responsibility to make sure we don’t buy too much. This is useful information but no need to make all of us feel like we are victims in this. We are so lucky to live in an era with so much available to us. My parents grew up in the Soviet Union waiting for hours at a time for a loaf of bread.

1. bring my own shopping bags and carry them only with my hands or shoulders. Works great on limiting the amount of stuff I buy. 2. am a decent cook so when I see ready made meals usually grossed out by them, those wouldnt make me happy. 3. by pass the snack/soft drink/make up section, only buy the fruit veggie meat diary, occasionally the bakery.

It was 1976. My wife gave me a grocery shopping list and I was off to the supermarket by myself for the first time. I was hungry. Everything looked good. I went up one aisle and down the next. I had never noticed half the items available, and lots of them were on sale. I filled one shopping cart and got another. When it too was full I checked out. Fortunately I had driven my pickup. Our fridge and pantry could barely hold it all. Many of the items were still in the pantry after 5 years. Lessons were learned.

Changing the store around and making me have to hunt for it does not make me or enable me to buy more items. It frustrates the hell out of me and I can only focus on the one objective whatever it is I am looking for. On the other hand if I am relaxed I can and sometimes I do buy things I was not intending to at that time. But even then it is not necessarily an impulse buy as I have many things I have researched and in need of for my home. If one item I am looking for is not founs but I come across another item I am in need of I will but the second item and cancel out getting the first item. Also, if I can not find an item many times I said forget it I will just go somewhere else and I have.

The larger baskets seem opposed to the newer small shopping carts at our local Safeway and Fred Meyer stores here in Portland Oregon. But a tricky sign here at "Freddies" is yellow the the word "savings" on it and the regular price of the item.

I always end up buying a bunch of stuff that should have been on my list but wasnt because my list is never complete because I don’t spend much time thinking about the grocery store outside of the grocery store. I’m better at counting than making lists so I usually just set a budget and buy stuff until I run out of money.
@iglidor6 жыл бұрын
Easy to show how shops are so powerfully manipulative if your "test shoppers" are influenced even before going into that shop to prove it to us how shops are manipulative. I mean if you knowingly go into test of "buy from this list and then buy anything you like" how do you expect objective data? Of course they will buy things they like that are not on list. YOU TOLD THEM TO DO IT!

What does it mean in Sweden?
@madman2u6 жыл бұрын
+fantasia foxxe *Usually* when a price tag says 3 for 2, it means you can buy 3 items for the price of 2. The way she said it in the video implied that she paid for 3 items but only got two. If she meant 2 for $3, then she should've said two for three dollars, not two for three. When the price sign says X for X, it has nothing to do with price. It simply implies that you get X amounts of items without additional cost(or reduced cost depending on how you look at it). Not sure if it's a cultural thing or if she's just dumb.

I don't know if its just me but when I walk into a store, I get what I came for and ignore everything else. I don't shop because its a good deal. I shop for something because of its value.

This is just another ploy at people who're weakminded. When I say that I mean people who're easily pushed in to buying things. I'll go to the store with a list and buy what I wrote down. If I find something I'll use at a later date that can hold up. I'll buy that aswell. but I dont go in spending 40% of what I thought i'd pay on random stuff.
