As an Ethiopian, I feel it is a film that needs telling of our collective past providing a sense of identity as a country. At a time in which empathy and tolerance is scarce, it is important to have both a subjective and objective understanding of the history of an Emperor who shaped the world as we know it today. Emperor Haile Selassie gave my father an opportunity and blessing that lasted long through generations of our family. There was a program at the time in Ethiopia that he’d send high ranking students abroad to study economics. My father studied at Haile Selassie University, now known as Addis University and went on to received his PhD, eventually a work visa followed by permanent residency through an amnesty program. He became a well respected economist at his university, and globally following some of his publications. It created a spiral of success and good fortune in our family and for that we forever keep Emperor Selassie’s name alive within our family.

But, whoever is producing and directing this documentary news to listen to or hear the Ethiopian people as well. The story has always two sides. We might not have well-documented information but we have elderly people who lived that era and time who has a different perspective than what I heard in this short interview video.
