not that Clarkson and his ilk care, but today's cars simply will NOT last. Too much plastic that fails and costs a small fortune to replace, inability to handle idling without killing the engine, belt and chain problems, VVT failures that again are expensive to service. Repairing today's cars will be pointless unless cars are 40k+ to purchase, but for some reason the manufacturers seem to be all in favour for that kind of model. There's going to be some horrific fires with electric cars too.

Small pistons and oil pumps, thin viscosity oil, weak cylinder blocks… All add a little bit of efficiency and reduce the life of that engine exponentially. There needs to be a change soon because this trend can not go on for long.

@@Excession-h6e It is most definitely not about pollution. The emission standards for new cars set in particular by the EU are pretty much impossible to achieve, which leads to such dubious measures. Well electronic power steering (in my 2004 Toyota) eliminates the hydraulic power steering pump and the hydraulic lines and hydraulic steering rack. As in, the fuel itself? Or making ICE cars more viable with efficiency upgrades to the actual engine units? Development into synthetic fuels has been ongoing for a while, which would allegedly remove some of the pollutants from exhaust gasses, and in turn mitigate some of the environmental impact of petrol-powered cars, which is where most of the regulation is coming from. As for efficiency upgrades, this is definitely happening. Take a look at the Mazda Skyactiv-X engine, or the new Nissan variable compression engines - engine tech is most definitely advancing alongside all the electric cars and hybrids.
