not that Clarkson and his ilk care, but today's cars simply will NOT last. Too much plastic that fails and costs a small fortune to replace, inability to handle idling without killing the engine, belt and chain problems, VVT failures that again are expensive to service. Repairing today's cars will be pointless unless cars are 40k+ to purchase, but for some reason the manufacturers seem to be all in favour for that kind of model. There's going to be some horrific fires with electric cars too.

Well electronic power steering (in my 2004 Toyota) eliminates the hydraulic power steering pump and the hydraulic lines and hydraulic steering rack. It is very precise... perhaps too much so as i find it only too easy to "wander" on straight roads. every twitch, every microscopic movement of your fingers, hands, arms all make the steering react. If you means full self driving systems a la Tesla...yeah the algorithms still aren't good enough for that.

Development into synthetic fuels has been ongoing for a while, which would allegedly remove some of the pollutants from exhaust gasses, and in turn mitigate some of the environmental impact of petrol-powered cars, which is where most of the regulation is coming from. As for efficiency upgrades, this is definitely happening. Take a look at the Mazda Skyactiv-X engine, or the new Nissan variable compression engines - engine tech is most definitely advancing alongside all the electric cars and hybrids.

Hybrid technology means that dinosaurs can continue to pollute while enjoying the noise. However, I agree almost all modern cars are look the same.

Facts. My partner wanted a newer suv when her car got totaled. We went with something almost 10 years old (RX350) instead cause it’s SIMPLY a better car than anything in the new $30k- $45k range. By many many miles. It’ll last much longer, it feels better to drive, more reliable, comfortable, great options, not TOO dated of an infotainment console, and even I like driving it, and I HATE driving SUVs. I’ll never buy a newer car again and frankly I’m cool with it, the manufacturers are making too many cars anyway (the REAL problem with the environment is the inundation of vehicles being junked and replaced rather than fixed and restored),

It comes to something doesn't it, when some 30 years later, the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever is still the Mclaren f1 😊. And of any road car deserves that title, it's the Mclaren.

That’s why I’m holding onto my 2003 VW Jetta 1.8T it has personality, it reeks of petrol and oil, and I have a tape cassette and a third pedal.

That's the same with me, im a new driver who grew up on top gear, also my dad was and still is a big petrol head. I personally will take a petrol car over an electric one, my first and current car is a chevrolet matiz from 2007, it may not be everyones first pick, but I got it for a good price and it is perfect for what I need it for. I really enjoy it. Meanwhile my parents have a 2011 Honda crv, which has more tech than mine, but is heavy as hell compared to it, also the crv is huge compared to the chevrolet.

…not true of bikes though. Just listen to a Ducati Panigale, MV Agusta (any) or a Moto Guzzi Mandello. Pure music! Riding them gives a real adrenaline rush. Oh! They’re all Italian . What a coincidence.😊
