I agree. "The government should have the confidence to say, "the BBC is a really good thing"", says the BBC chairman. Let's break that down and look at a few areas of the BBC's operations where this confidence may be found. Where could anyone find the confidence to say that the BBC has not been involved in scandal after scandal over the last few decades, the confidence to say that all guilty parties have faced proper justice, the confidence to say that the BBC always produces programmes of the highest quality, the confidence to say that the BBC's news and current affairs output is always impartial and the confidence to say that the BBC never wastes the money handed to it on a plate? I could go on, but that will do for now. The Chairman of the BBC speaks from a clear position of vested interest and what he says should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

I worked for ITN as a links engineer over a forty year period & the vast amount of resources the BBC had to throw at covering stories was legendary amongst fellow broadcasters. I recall doing a job at Lords Cricket Ground where I was in our outside broadcast vehicle servicing ITV, C5, C4, the ITN Newschannel, CNN & IRN. Whereas the Beeb had a truck for National News, another truck for BBC News 24, another for Newsroom South East, the radio car for Radio 4, and lastly yet another radio car for Radio London… it was unbelievable! Unlike their commercial rivals the BBC simply don’t know how to run a lean, efficient broadcasting company - because they’ve never had to!
@davewalker71262 ай бұрын
I remember something similar. There was an inquest at a local hotel and I saw the sat dishes and went for a chat. The Sky guy had basically a trailer with the generator and a dish, with an awning to stand under. The BBC had a full OB truck with heating, swivel chairs, cones all round it, a car to do the butty run.

Plenty of cash to waste and then they make technical compromises like using NICAM (lossy compression of the 1970s kind) for national FM radio network distribution, resulting in ~35 years of broadcasting substandard, mangled audio. Decisions like that (and many others) shows they don't give a damn about the viewers and listeners. The big money is spent only to line the pockets of their chums, even when such excess spending has no discernable advantage to the taxpayer.

@bonaggy2 ай бұрын
As an organisation that takes money from the public to operate, it should have to justify the licence and its existence every year. The BBC is no longer an independent or world class operation anymore. With the monopoly it holds on British entertainment - not to mention its sub-groups that handles sales and distribution - it should not need propping up from the general public. It should exist in the sink or swim environment other media groups operate in. If you can’t provide a viable product, the general public should not have to financially cushion your bad decisions. We will never get a fair evaluation on the BBC. The government have a vested interest to control it and the BBC are the last group to expect true introspection from on value for money. In this day and age, it should scrap the licence fee and exist on the paid subscription model. I haven’t watched regular tv in over a decade. I am also tired of being pestered by salesmen who are little more than extortion agents. If our government were truly concerned with value for money; they’d wind up the BBC, outsource our national news to someone like Ground News who not only show the news, but the biases of the groups reporting. There are other production companies out there that don’t operate on the same overheads as the BBC and do just fine, but also don’t claim to speak for me either.

The TV license fee is a lot wider that the BBC and iPlayer. If you want to watch any live TV you need a license. If you do not want to watch live TV you can opt out by telling the licensing authorities. It is only because you choose not to do that people knock on your door. The only reasonable alternative to a license fee is a voluntary subscription fee. There would not be enough advertising revenue to go around, so the ITV model could not be used. The BBC income is approximately twice that of ITV. The BBC manages to have four TV channels, local radio and the world service (which is used by many people as an unbiased news show). ITV has one TV station.
