LOVELY MAMA!!! You can tell she is a super Sweet lady. My mother and I were always in the Kitchen together. It brought back so many memories just watching this video. I lost my mama about eight years ago and still miss her madly to this day. never stop telling your mama you love them! Those were my last words to her as she laid in my arms that day God called her Back Home. … you sure do look like your mother and Just as Beautiful as her.❤❤ going to make this pie for sure TONIGHT! Yum-yum!

I use half leaf lard and half butter for my crusts.

My mom taught me to do that with the scraps of pie crust too! I'm sure she learned it from her mother. We usually sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on half of the dough before baking too. Thank you for the lovely mother's day video. ❤

The MS trick: I learned in high school (so 1980-ish) when I was serving at a school banquet. Works for everything. In my case, soup and coffee (and no, not together!). The pie - yum. Will be making soon!!

Loved this video and seeing your mom cook with you. My mom used to make the same pie. One thing I wish you would do in all of the food52 videos is to leave the little comment thing that pops up on the left on the screen on a bit longer. It goes by so quickly I have to rewind to see what you said. They are always good or funny comments. Thanks for all you do. Xo

I still use lard, i love how i can also use it to make home made bird feed from it and corn or seeds

My brother-in-law, THE pie maker in the family, almost always uses lard, or a blend with lard & another fat....always delish!

Very much enjoyed the video. Coconut custard is my favorite, being my birthday treat instead of cake when I was a kid. I'm wondering whether you shielded the crust when you cooked the custard. It would have been in the oven for so long by the end, I would think the crust around the edges would burn.

We lowered the oven temperature before baking the custard so we didn't need to shield the crust.

Yes! Fiver from Watership Down. Her full name is actually Fiver Hazel Friend (Hazel being another Watership Down character; Friend is my husband's family name).

I would love to make this pie for guests that will be visiting soon. Do you think unsweetened almond milk would be a good substitute for whole milk? Lovely video Moms are so special :*) Oh the pie crust is my go to, or a all butter crust, just depends on what I have on hand!!! You can actually mix half crisco and butter as well!!!

Since it's a coconut cream pie, probably coconut milk or coconut cream would be better.

I agree with Virginia's reply -- and if you can't get coconut milk or coconut cream, unsweetened almond milk should work, as well.

Never, ever, ever use the C-word, viz., Crisco. Major ugh. Inedible. Only an all- butter crust or maybe one with lard. But, I am charmed by Mom Judy‼️ She’s terrific & I love her Oven-Fried Chicken recipe‼️♥️ One more thing: please use ecologically sound unbleached parchment paper‼️
