Coheed has been one of my favorite bands since around 2005, and I haven't actively listened to them all the time, lately, but damn this song always hits. The soundscape of this album and in particular, this song, really feels otherworldly. I remember discovering this song (along with Iro-Bot) as a young teen on a cold winter day, very late at night, listening to my iPod. I had somehow never heard it before. It felt like secret music no one was supposed to know about, presenting itself to me at just the right hour.

This is an IRO-bot knowing they are faulty and that they will be detroyed by Inferno (with their brother/sister IRO-bots near), as Inferno can't risk any weaknesses in his creations in case they jeapordise them all and their mission. Imagine being sentient but knowing your creator/father sees you as just a tool or machine and disposable (however justifiable and logical this is). Heartbreaking.

Do you like Coheed & Cambria? Their later work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Second Stage Turbine Blade came out in '02, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Anthony Green, but I think Claudio has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

The lyrics of Coheed and Cambria's music coincides with a comic book series written by the Lead Singer Claudio Sanchez. For a better understanding of the lyrics. Read the first Volume of the comics called The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade while listening to this album on repeat. It adds a whole new perspective and appreciation for the music.

Basically a lot of stuff happens in a mythical universe and a lot of people die, some planets are launched out of the system and all other things. There is a species of angels called the Prise and one of them, Ambellina, decides to burn her hair and wings to become mortal so that she can go fight with Claudio (the character in the story, not the member of the band). I think that's what the "Fight on, Fire, I'll burns my hands..." lyric is about, but maybe not. Mariah is a character that is thought to the prophesied hero by some, but it turns out to be the character Claudio, and this is shown in the song The Crowing on the following album. Also there's a lyric that says, "acknowledge the other guy," which again might be in reference to Claudio. So the song seems to be a conversation about how to move forward in the battle plan and admit that the plan they had was a failure. I read the comics years ago, so I don't remember all the details. I can't exactly remember if Wilhelm himself kills Mariah or if his henchman Mayo does it, but probably Mayo. "Father figure" might be a reference to Jesse, who is part of the defunct KBI, which is a group determined to stop Wilhelm Ryan, the antagonist of the story. Mariah was married to Jesse, so that would make sense maybe. Also the "children in the floor" could be the IRO-bots that Jesse created to help battle. TL:DR - Mariah is killed and is not the protagonist she was thought to be, and the antagonist Wilhelm Ryan and a side-protagonist Jesse both realize that Claudio (the character) is the true protagonist. The lyrics and the comics don't exactly line up because there's a lot more happening in the comics than what is in the songs. Some songs are more obvious than others as far as plot development goes.

IRO bots are as follows Coheed His wife Cambria And Coheeds brother Inferno are all IRO bots designed to keep heavens fence from danger but they are unaware they are actually superheroes basically they are like wolves in sheep clothing who live a normal life on a planet unaware of the events about to unfold Coheed and Cambria have children Maria Matthew and Claudio The sinister organization behind the bad stuff that happens in the comic convinces Coheed and Cambria that there kids are secretly holding a time bomb plague that when it goes off will exterminate all life on the planet so they convince them to kill Maria Matthew and Claudio and are successful in killing Maria Matthew dies as well leaving Claudio but he escapes He learns of his powers just as his parents do later in the story Claudio saves heavens fence Read more in the comics
