One of my most favorite memories is of my Mama (God Rest her Soul) and me when I was about 8 years old in Oklahoma City... we were dirt poor at the time... but for some odd reason we found our way at a dinner late one night... I was old enough to know that we didn't have the money to spend in this dinner, but went with the flow, following my mama. Sitting up at the counter, Mama order herself a cup of coffee and one piece of Ice Box Chocolate Pie... I thought I was in heaven. The gentleman asked if we wanted anything else, but knew we couldn't afford anything more, by the look on my Mama's face. She, the lady that she was, declined with grace. That night, was one of the best nights of my life, sharing one piece of heaven... A woman near by, overheard the conversation and paid for our pie and coffee... someone else whispered to the man behind the counter, to give us a hamburger and fries, or whatever we wanted... he paid for that. We never got to thank these very kind people disguised as angels... So that you so much for bringing back a beautiful memory... (now I'm crying)...

Judi what a wonderful story and memory. I have been fortunate in my life to have never gone hungry and try to give back when I can. We have two ladies in our town that have been friends for over 50 years. They feed the homeless or just people down on their luck every Sunday out of a church kitchen. It breaks my heart to know that may be the only decent meal they have had for the week. There is definitely a place in heaven reserved for these two angels on earth. Whenever we have a little money to spare we either donate or buy groceries for their cause. They are the most precious! We always kid them about "we are riding their coattails to heaven".

As a young child I didn’t want to eat meringue and I’m 99% sure it was because one of the adults in the family called it calf slobbers. One of my favorite memories about meringue is the summer I was 15 I fell in puppy love with my friend’s cousin. One day my mom made pizza and some pies, bf was at my house already but I was allowed to invite a couple more friends, so I invited my bf’s brother and my best friend. After we ate pizza and started eating dessert my bf’s brother said to my bf why are you eating those calf slobbers, you don’t eat them at home…I’m gonna tell momma. We all cracked up, but bf turned beet red…. My daughter in law doesn’t like meringue either, so I always buy whipping cream for her, just sliding meringue off a slice of pie is no big deal.

Tammy, I gotta say that cooking your pudding in the microwave is sheer genius. I'm 60 and have always used the cooktop to make pudding. Back in my day microwaves were thousands of dollars and the only people who could afford one were rich people. I wish I had had one. I will NEVER make another pudding on the cooktop as long as I live. By the way, I live right down the road from you in Jacksonville, FL. Howdy neighbor. It's funny. As I watch your videos, I find that we make a lot of the same dishes, but we do them a little differently. For example, my traditional chocolate pie uses flour instead of cornstarch, and of course, I learned to cook it on the stove top. I may have to try the microwave though. Also, My pie has three egg yolks instead of two, and my liquid is one 12 oz can of evaporated milk, and one can of water, which is the equivalent of three cups of milk. Also, when I was growing up, and when I was raising my two kids, there would be weeknights when we would have hamburger steak, fried potatoes, and usually corn or green beans. Sometimes with our hamburger steak, instead of fried potatoes, we would have macaroni and cheese out of the Kraft box! 😁 Plus, we also don't put onions in our fried potatoes, never did, and my mom never did either. Our hamburger steak is just fried with salt and pepper. No onions, no bell peppers, just plain beef! I always have mine with ketchup on top, but sometimes we put steak sauce on them, but that's mostly my husband and kids, I rarely put steak sauce on mine, it's almost always ketchup. Also, when I was growing up, Saturday nights were hamburger night. Hamburgers / cheeseburgers with french fries and/or deep fried mushrooms. My mom would open a can of mushroom pieces, drain it, dump it in some batter she'd made, and drop by spoonfuls in the hot oil. Good stuff! Those were the days! We would watch The Muppets and enjoy our burgers, fries, and mushrooms!

Hi Tammy! We had hamburger steaks for supper tonight, too! Served 'em up with onion gravy & mashed potatoes. Anything with sugar & chocolate is automatically going to get a 5-star rating with my crew. We all have enjoyed the chocolate pie recipe. My crew always hollers for more chocolate in the pie so I had to chuckle at your heaping tablespoons. I found, by accident (picked up the wrong container & opened it before noticing my mistake ! ) that using a combination of the regular Hershey's cocoa and Hershey's dark cocoa (has a red "ribbon" across the front of the container) gives a depth of chocolate flavor all my crew really enjoy. The ratio that works for us is a 3 to 1 of the regular cocoa to the dark cocoa. The addition of the relatively small amount of the dark cocoa really makes a difference in the flavor if you have a chance to try it sometime! Thanks for another video, y'all!! 😊

My SIL once made fresh grated“hash browns” with a glut of oil and refused to turn the heat up. The potatoes simmered in oil and turned translucent. No browning at all. They were awful, but they worked well as a laxative. I don’t know why she wouldn’t turn the heat up and brown them. Some people have weird ways of making potatoes. I love to par cook the potatoes in seasoned boiling water (I use Better Than Bouillon chicken or beef stock paste). Sometimes I roast them at 450F in a preheated cast iron skillet with a little lard, beef tallow, or bacon fat. There was a lady at my parents church that made the best chocolate meringue pies. It’s been over 40 years, and my family still uses her recipe. Does Chris like forgotten cookies made from whipped egg whites, sugar, pecans, and chocolate chips? I love them. Brown sugar makes them really good.

My mother was not from the south, and seemed really resistant to trying southern recipes. My dad wax born and raised in Alabama, so when I finally started cooking he enjoyed it. He would stay with me sometime when he was traveling for his job, and would really annoy my mom when he would tell her what I had cooked for him and suggest she try making whatever it was. I have had luck with it for a month, my recipe used red pepper flakes a whole bottle soaked over night, strained add water to make a quart spray bottle with 3 drops dish soap, it takes awhile to wash the capsason off

You didn't let ppl know that you MUST use a glass bowl for the meringue. Plastic or metal & it will never turn out right. And the bowl MUST b really clean. 🥳 And I love my fried taters crispy golden too but my kid's & grandkids don't like them if I don't add lots of onions & garlic 🥰

Try using Expresso powder about a half teaspoon in the pudding, that’ll really kick up the flavor!

Good morning Miss Tammy and Chris just started watching this video I've never had a chocolate pie with a meringue topping, always with whipped cream or cool whip. We always called that spoon a soup spoon

When I was young mom would make homemade chocolate pudding and my sisters and I would dip biscuits in it to eat. We loved it!

Tammy, you are on a roll tonight! Poor Chris can’t keep up, lol. The pie looks amazing but I don’t eat chocolate. I really enjoy watching you cook. Have a blessed evening.

We always had to add fillers to our hamburgers growing up--it made them go further and also have more flavor. It did make them more fragile. I'm glad I was a teenager before my dad started hunting deer or we would've had to eat venison burgers all our lives!

LOL, I laugh all thru it. Wish you were my neighbor! I would invite myself over at meal times.! My mama cooked like that, and I learned much, but you teach me more.

I’m gonna try this !! Looks soo good ..I can not do a great meringue . I just have hand mixer . It is hard to get that fat off your hand .. dawn is the best though..I like to keep a gro bag where I prep for shells peelings or empty cans .. just my little tip ha ha.. I seen this lady had a picture of her momma in her kitchen and I did the same after momma passed . It’s just a small pic I have ,it’s a sweet reminder ..

Chris, I LOVE meringue too. I love chocolate pie too, well, there is not too many desserts I do not like. You just can not beat a homemade chocolate pie. I love the way you make it in the microwave. I was making a banana pudding on the stove top and got so tired of stirring it I put it in the microwave, and it came out perfect. I made your lemon icebox pie Friday, and it is so good. I love vanilla wafer crusts. I enjoy you so much. You remind me so much of the way my mother cooked. Love yall

My granny would sift a thin layer of corn starch on top of her pies before she put merengue on and baked it. It helps to soak up the "weeping" and is an additional stabilizer. I can't testify to how well it world because I have yet to master merengue well enough to get it onto a pie and bake it, but it seemed to work well for her.

When i saw this pie recipe I have to admit, I thought, that wont work in a microwave,,,Well, I tried it, its absolutely perfect, I had to add a minute because my Amana Radarange is 40 years old lol, but its just perfect. Thanks for so many good recipes and for being a bright spot in my day.

That pie looks perfect! and using the micro makes it so it doesnt scorch on the bottom ( i know in the micro it still could if you over do it) definitely going to try it :) :) :)

No matter what kind of patties I cook, about halfway through one side, I turn the patties around in the skillet. When I flip them, I do the same. Like you said, the eyes just don’t cook evenily.

I just love how you cook the down-home way that my Mom and Grandma cooked and I cook. My sisters cook all nouveau and what not and tell me I have too much fat, salt! Personally it's just not as good as my dishes! And my nieces and nephews agree lol! Thank you for these great videos!
