I have been crocheting for 46 years. I saw people do this years ago, but the general consensus I heard was how difficult it was to figure out. This convinced me not to try it. But this explanation is so clear, concise, and easy to follow along that I know I'll be able to do this once I get some variegated yarn from "Yarnia" (my yarn room). What I learned is that it's about controlling the color and not about stitch count or tension, for proper pooling, fudging is not sloppy work, it's a design element! 😂 Yeah!! 🎉🎉 Thank you, I am definitely going to try this again now thanks to your help!

I used 3-12oz skeins of of Caron Jumbo and a little bit of Mainstays anti-pilling acrylic to do the border. You will love doing color pooling. It is amazing to watch the pattern develop! 😁💜

I just discovered this technique after decades of crotchet and knitting. It's so cool. I went right out and I bought wool to try it. This video was super helpful in figuring it out. Something that you might want to talk about is adjusting the pattern at the sides to keep the diagonal. It messed me up a few times. 😊 I found the way you explained this to be very clear. I am getting very lost at the end of row 2. Somehow you got your blue yarn to have one stitch at the end of row 2, and one at the beginning of row 3, do that it shifts and makes the diagonal. I keep ending up with the same colors on the same row, just stacking them.

Ok, I actually tried this instead of just saying how cool it looked like most other comments... Let me share a tip to save you HOURS of frustration like I had (the video falls very short of explaining this)... Knowing where to repeat the sequence is KEY. my yarn was very similar to hers but had "magic numbers" of 2,3,(6x)2 - in other words, a sequence that repeated after a set of 17 stitches. It did NOT work out the way she instructs here. I actually had to spilt a stitch color section mid way to start a new row. Now it's perfect. I literally had to find out how the stitches worked out on grid paper first to find out where my break should be. If you do this: the even rows are shifted to the right by 1/2 and have the same number of stitches in each row. Once I did that ground work, it's coming out perfectly. I can't believe this wasn't stressed more. It's essential. Lastly, once you start that 3rd row where you can check to make sure your pattern is right and you're good - from there just remember the color of the stitch you're making should be the same color as the lined up row below it and the very last stitch in that magic number for that color shouldn't. Very very easy way to keep track. So if I have a number of two: the first stitch will match the color below but not my second stitch. If I had a number of 3: the first two should match below but not the third. I hope this saves at least one person from almost giving up after undoing the entire work like 6 times. Good grief.😢

If you pay attention to row 2 in the video, it does, in fact, split the color way. She may not have stressed that she was splitting it but did say to crochet the color way to the end and turn and crochet back to the beginning of the color way thus splitting it. 🤷‍♀️It worked perfectly for me doing that.

24:10 _Colour pooling can be a bit tricky, it is not for the faint of heart ._ ;) Let me add: it is not for those who do not like to plan. As the fabric is manipulated tensions wise, sometimes loose sometimes firm to get the right amount of stitches in the right place - it might be better suited for larger pieces (within larger pieces this will sort itself out. And the projects should be squar. Increases and decreases would upset the whole pattern It could be nice for a bag (with an inside bag of woven fabric of course).

I have seen others use single crochet to color pool but I have never been successful with it because the stitches get too close together and I lose track. Making sure every other row is diagonal sounds scary until I remember the orange/purple/orange is 1 less stitch total than the blue/white/blue so the first row having two orange/purple/orange and the second row having the second blue/white/while at least helps us know the third row is gonna start the orange/purple/orange offset from the first row. We just have to hope it’s offset by 1 stitch and not more lol. This is honestly really cool, and I’m scared to try it with all the guess and check it takes

Bernat has a blanket yarn that is designed specifically for color pooling. Bulky 6 is my favorite yarn so I am on the hunt for variegated urns that color pool. 😁💜

this is really cool! but to solve your tension issue when turning the work couldnt you make the row one stitch shorter and treat the "bar" as one of your allocated stitches for the current colour?

I think it would work initially, however, as the pattern progresses, that stitch will travel diagonally across the work and will need to be adjusted to only one stitch every time. I do this with a half double crochet when I need to in order to control the color. 😁💜

Hello, thank you for the tutorial! Such a cool technique, I've only ever done amigrurumi but I may try to do something like this. Are you skipping a stitch every time you do another crochet? it looks like theres more space in between them than I normally have

I am using the miss stitch which is a single crochet followed by a chain. Then in the row above, the single crochet is stitched into the chain 1 space. The only time you skip stitches is on the very first row when you stitch into the chain.

At the end of the row, do you do the moss stitch and then chain 2 to turn (single crochet, chain 1, then chain 2 to turn), or do you just add 1 more chain to the moss stitch for a total of 2 chains (single crochet, chain1, chain 1, then turn)??

I watched part 1 and then came to part 2 and I have falied at pooling at least 4 times but today was redemption! 😂 I have one confusion in your method which is , the structure of Moss Stitch is Sc+ch1, so , now when we reach at the end of the row 1 you complete the Moss Stitch with SC+Ch1 and then you do two more chains and turn and then at the end of row 2 you complete the Last Moss Stitch as SC+ch1 and then you only do one chain to turn instead of two. Am I missing something? Please, help me understand this matter! Do we always have to do SC+ch1 and then chain 2 to turn or we only do it on first row and from 2nd row we do SC+ch1 and then we chain only one and turn to row 3 and so on?

I’m so glad you got redemption. It’s such a great feeling! On the ends, you SC-followed by 2 chains. So essentially it is a moss stitch (sc+ch1) followed by another chain 1 to turn. This is done at the end of every row. I hope this clears things up! 😁💜

@@ItsTimeforYarn oh thank you so much! It does! I am going to start pooling now. I am trying to make a jacket. So, should I turn shape the armohole and neck as usual? Or there's any specific method while pooling? Also My yarn has yellow-orange and Blue-Purple as ombre trasitions. But I am able to get clear stitches in each colour. So, it make 1 stitch in each colour. Or let's assume 2 stitches per ombre consistently. Is it two low of stitch count for argyle or stitch count is not important. As I heard somebody say in a tutorial that you should at least have 3 -4 stitches per colour. I am getting only 1 or 2.

I used to work in a craft store and I seem to remember that Caron pound of love skeins have no dye lots. For yarns with dye lots, do you think it will make a difference? I used to buy a lot of clearance yarn and getting consistent dye lots is almost impossible, so I have more than a bit of yarn that doesn't have matching dye lots.

There is always a risk that the colors won’t match exactly (even in the same dye lot) but I have not had any issues with the colors being out of order or anything. I don’t worry much about the colors being a little off (I like clearance yarn too) so if a skein is a little wonky I just embrace the nature of handmade items and keep it moving. 😁💜

I’m so excited, I’m gonna start this in the morning! Of course, in all my totes of yarn, I just didn’t have the right yarn (actually I really don’t have any variegated I’ve run out lol) so unfortunately I just HAD to order some yarn, and of course all us crocheters definitely hate doing that but I guess I just had to this time🤷 I do have a question though, when you got done with that first row you had some chains left over that you couldn’t use, what do you do then with those? Is there a way to pick them out somehow? I’ve never had that happen to me, because most patterns I’ve done have had a chain amount/a multiple of _ chains that it instructs you to chain, but I understand that can’t be done with this, so I just wanted to know what to do if I do wind up with extra chains

Great question. The chains can be easily undone. Just untie the slip knot at the beginning and undo the chains. When you get get back to your work, simply tighten and it is like they never happened. Good luck with your new yarn. We’ve all been there where we just couldn’t avoid buying yarn. We work through it and make beautiful things after picking out great yarn for a new project. What’s a yarn lover supposed to do? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😁💜

@@ItsTimeforYarn I started it today and it’s turning out amazing!! I made a swatch to test it first, and I found that for me a 6mm hook works best and I had the same magic numbers as you, then I started my blanket and I tore it out once only to realize when I did the second attempt that the first time was right all along😅 but it’s turning out really good nonetheless and it is working up so quickly, I maybe could’ve made it just a little wider (like one more sequence) but I got way more yarn than I needed anyway (it was a really good deal, it’s in packs of two and it was buy one pack get another free so I got four packs lol) so if I want I’ll make another wider one once I finish this one
