Fellow math and science (trained) teacher here! 🎉 Though I’ve been in elementary with lots of kindy and primary class coverages recently. The calculations tend to be my favourite part of quilting. So now I’ve fallen down a summer rabbit hole and want to make a colour pooled blanket - in spite of only crocheting stuffed critters before - never anything flat 😂

Hello! I have spent most of my teaching career in Elementary math/science but found myself in middle school math my last few years. I really enjoyed it. I discovered over the years that less than 3rd grade is NOT for me. Bless those primary teachers. 🍏❤️ You will love color pooling. Watching the pattern develop is very much like a science experiment. It’s exciting to see what happens. You can do it! 💜😁

I know for a fact that Red Heart Neon Stripes and Red Heart Primary Stripes pool well with the granny stitch. I haven’t found anymore that work with the moss stitch other than the Caron yarn in Gossamer but it is discontinued. You can do it!

I actually have a question for you. I have a yarn that I thought would be great for color pooling, but now I'm not so sure. I have a couple packs of Bernat Softee Baby yarn, in the variegated color way Blue Flannel. The color sequence is white, denim blue, white, gray, white, sky blue, white, gray. It's a light 3 yarn, so recommended hook size is a G - 4.25 mm hook. Now, I have noticed that the white sequence and the gray sequence seem to be the same lengths, and the two blues seem to be the same lengths to each other, but are longer than the white and gray sequences. I thought this would make it perfect for the argyle look. So, using the recommended hook, I chained through the entire sequence, then started the moss stitch (definitely the best stitch for this pooling pattern) and tried to find my 'magic number'. Which is where I ran into my snag, something I didn't catch when first studying this yarn. There is a very slight ombre effect when the colors change, nearly undetectable when studying it, but fairly noticeable when actually working with it. I tried with 3 different hook sizes (once I chained with the recommended hook): F, G, and H but I always seem to have 1 stitch that is slightly different from the other colors. Is there a way to control the color enough to make sure that the ombre effect is always in the chain 1 stitch, or am I asking too much out of this yarn?

Hi there! I would either consider it a stitch for either of the colors it falls between, consider it it’s own stitch and make sure it falls in a diagonal like the other colors, or work hard to manipulate the gauge in that particular spot in order to make it so why I wanted. Hope this helps and good luck! 💜😁

@sdmcdaniel2255 Жыл бұрын
@@ItsTimeforYarn lol... I think it will be a lot less complicated to manipulate the yarn to make sure the ombre stitches are in the ch 1 spot! We'll have to see once I get started. I have another baby blanket project I have to finish first... two coworkers with babies being born so close together!

@@ItsTimeforYarn Well, apparently the yarn I chose, while it LOOKS like it would be great for color pooling, it just didn't work right. I tried 4 different hook sizes, both up and down, but I couldn't get consistent stitch numbers with 2 of the colorways. I think I know why. Remember I told you that there was a slight transition color in between each of the colors in the sequence? Well, while the color sequence sections are the same length, the transition WITHIN those colors are not. My colorway went white, denim blue, white, gray, white, sky blue, white, gray. What happens is... the white, denim blue, white works great. The sky blue, white, gray, works right. but the gray/white IN BETWEEN the two blues, isn't consistent. I would get 3 stitches in the first row, then only 2 stitches for a couple of rows, and back up to 3 again for a few more, with the transitioning color (the almost silvery gray) being longer or shorter between the two. So I'm going to go with a completely different pattern for this baby blanket, and buy some color pooling yarn for a color pool project. But at least now I know how to do it!

Question: I have Red Heart Retro Stripe. The color changes are ombre. But the bigger problem seems to be after 11 color changes, the yarn doesn't start over, but goes back in reverse order. Is there any hope for color pooling this yarn?
@janemack8852
@janemack8852 Жыл бұрын
I feel like I'd just end up with stripes. Right?
@ItsTimeforYarn
@ItsTimeforYarn Жыл бұрын
Yes. Unfortunately, you would just end up with stripes. The colorway has to change in the same order consistently in order to color pool in the checkered or argyle pattern. 😁💜

QUESTION: is it possible to achieve an argyle pattern OR the plaid pattern, no matter how many colors are in one sequence that you’ve chained? Also, if one or two of the colors are repeated within one sequence, does that make a difference? -Brenda
@ItsTimeforYarn
@ItsTimeforYarn 9 ай бұрын
From my experience, it does not matter how many colors or how often the color is repeated within the sequence. The important thing is to learn what the sequence is so that you can work through it in your initial chain and row 1. Stopping in the right place makes all the difference. 😁💜

Any multiple of 0.5x the color sequence should work for the length. Once you know how long the color sequence is, you can repeat it 1 or 1.5 or 2 or 2.5 (etc.) times per row

Ah! Your math background explains a lot. I'm not at all math-phobic, but I felt overwhelmed when I first looked at the amazing patterns you manage to extract from what I thought of as impossibly mixed-up colored yarns. I looked around the web for beautifully colored yarn that would be suitable for pooling, but I couldn't find anything I really liked. Lots of the yarns I found were discontinued. Maybe that's seasonal (it's March... warmi weather is ahead). Any suggestions?
@ItsTimeforYarn

If you’re ordering online, the best bet is to get yarns that are advertised as pooling. The only yarns I can say with certainty that pool (that aren’t advertised as pooling) are Red Heart Primary Stripes, Red Heart Neon Stripes, and Caron jumbo in Gossamer and Foliage. There we lists of pooling yarns available that other crocheters have put together that are super helpful as well. Good luck! 😁💜

Wouldn’t making small be possible only if the color sequence sections are identical in length? With the yarn in the example, the blue, white, blue is 2, 4, 2, but the orange, purple, orange is 2, 3, 2.
@ItsTimeforYarn
@ItsTimeforYarn Жыл бұрын
Because they are offset by one stitch naturally, it makes it easier to get the diagonal that we need to make the Argyle pattern. Identical lengths lends itself to stacking and making vertical stripes. 💜😁

Hmmm. Interesting 🤔. I’ve never thought that it uses extra yarn. It’s just a regular moss stitch or granny stitch like you would use with any other yarn. You are just paying attention to where the colors land when using it. Is there a certain stitch that uses more yarn? I would love to learn more about it.
