This is a showcase and explanation of my Minecart Multi-Sorter for Vanilla Minecraft which is based off Cass' concept. Minecart sorting systems have been around for a long time, but his is exceptionally good and it was the inspiration for this build. Many of the concepts used in our designs were developed back in 2017 or even earlier. Here's a few helpful videos I found from that era:

I'm so happy to see another KZbin working on this type of item sorter (my favorite kind) I can't wait to see this type of multi-item sorter to become as mainstream and popular as the other more common sorters :)

Nice take on the system and it works faster than I expected when I saw the redstone for the first time in the video. Here's some possibly useful feedback: - I see you tried different optimizations to speed up the system! - The minecart triggering is interesting, it will always fire but it makes the reconfiguration system slightly more complicated. - I can't think of an easy way to make it sort for 16-stackables without losing the simplicity in this case, but you can figure it out later. - Having the configuration chests be accessible from the front is a great idea! Also thanks for the credit, good work!
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. It technically can sort 16 stackables, but it requires the hopper minecart to only take a handful of items each trip which results in a massive hit to performance. I also couldn't find a good way to achieve both without significantly complicating the system.

Thank you for explaining how it works. So many videos are just block by block builds were the creator doesn't even seem to know how it works. The best is when they have useless redstone cause they don't know. I can build things quicker and even modify when I understand what's going on.
@metamilo

Yea, I don't like block by block tutorials either for much the same reasons, that's why I try to always explain what I'm doing. I like to teach people how to solve their problems so next time they can do it themselves rather than just handing them a solution. If there weren't so many people who wanted block by block tutorials I would probably never do them. They take tonnes of time and provide very little real value imho.

You did an amazing job with this! I'm planning to use this for sure. One question though - if I expanded this, would I have to make any major changes? I'm especially thinking about the slow rail system underneath, I don't want to mess something up by expanding that.
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can expand it as far as you want with very little change. You may have to add a gap every 18 or so block so you can keep the top rail powered. (only needed in 1.15 version) Other than that the only thing you need to tweak is the delay on the slow rail system. That can easily be done by adding the systems I have to more segments to lengthen the delay, or by reducing the length of the blinking rails by using a normal rail to act as a break between the blinking sections and permanent on section. It will take some testing to get right, but if you make a mistake down there it won't break anything else. If you make it too fast, then some of the items will end up in the overflow chest. If you make it too slow then you're only hurting your processing speed.

Absolutely beautiful. Only thing setting it back is how slow it is. Brainstorming here it might be possible to use 2 mine carts so it doesn’t have to go all the way back around, another idea is to use curved rails with redstone power have the Minecart stoop after the item gets taken from the chest, and have the Minecart start dumping items instantly. But this is truly awesome to see. These categorizing sorting systems are my favorite for survival it’s really cool to see them getting better and better.

Great, just a vew weeks after spending many recourses and sacrificing lots of space by building Mizumas design, you come out with your much more compact, simpler and in my case better design!👿 Well, let’s see, maybe mizumas design breaks anyway, if the world gets updated to 1.16🤷‍♂️ If that’s the case I will definitely build yours. Great System 😊👍🏻

@samuelbauer9226
@samuelbauer9226 4 жыл бұрын
metamilo well, I had to modify his design to fit in my case. For it to work properly I probably would have to replace the hoppers which are transporting the items from the minecart to the chest with a waterstream. But before I do that I’ll wait for 1.16. I am fearing that due to the compactness of his loading system, it might maybe be effected. If so, it will probably also be hard to fix. Who knows, let’s see.😉😊 Man, I can’t wait for 1.16 with its new nether Dungeon!😁

Great video! Do you think this would work on an smp server running spigot? I've been trying to find a multi-item sorter that would, and was hoping Maizuma's would work, but in his description he said it wouldn't. You don't mention it, so I have a slight hope xD Thanks, and cheers on your video, it's really well done. Edit: it works!!!! Yay! after 3 failures with different systems, you gave me victory! I'm in love now! At the end of building this, I kept thinking something was going to go wrong, and of course it did, it wasn't working because I was powering the top hoppers instead of the second row, I'm not sure how I managed that, but I just added a dropper and made the whole thing one taller rather than rebuilding the "lime" part. Now I'll get an unexpected other row of chests for my stuff, so it's turned out pretty good :) TYVM!!!

Yes, you can extend the sides as long as you want. in the 1.15 version you'll have to leave a gap ever 16 or so blocks so you can power the tracks, but that's fixed in the 1.16 version. Also, you'll have to tweak the minecart delay on the bottom, but that's easy to do.

Minecarts are cool. It uses minecarts. Therefore, it is cool. Honestly, there really isn't much of a difference either way, it just depends what you prefer. With the 1.16 version you showed as 14.00... could you move the second dust going into the piston with the composter, to the inside and put it on glass. It would power the piston as it’s aiming into it. And wouldn’t power the hopper unless you were making the system only one wide. Just a thought and wanted to see what you think

FEEDBACK: 1) The hopper line on top could be replaced with a water and ice stream? Its faster and because the sistem only filter a limited amount of items for cicle, you could move the items very fast to the destination chest and the receiver hoppers wont overload (That happens with the clasic one item hopper sorter, if you send the items with a water stream to fast, the filter hopper will overload and let items pass unfiltered). And less hoppers is always a good thing. 2) You could detect if the sistem already know where to put the items, and derive the minecart to a closest station, so it doesnt need to go to the end everytime. This could be specialy usefull if you filter the most common items first, and if the sistem is big. 3) Realy like how simple it is to reconfigure the sistem. Im thinking of building a very big storage sistem in my survival world, combining the ilmango double speed hopper filter for common item storage, and then a sistem like this to do the "fine" filtering, less used block variants like stairs and slabs, and uncommon items that i woulndt need 5 double chest to store. I want to filter every posible item.

@@zakdemou2575 Unfortunately that's a common problem with any stacked chest storage scheme, there are probably ways around it but I guarantee that they're more of a hassle than they're worth. I fixed the 16 stack issue by adding another comparator module on the other side of the start position of the hopper minecart. This module checks if the minecart leaves with a stack of 16 and substracts one so it can later pull the filter item and unload the items in the correct chests. This is acomplished by adding a hopper on the track (2 blocks after the detector rail) which is locked by default. A comparator checks the hopper minecart. If the signal strength is 4 (22 normal items + a stack of 16) then the hopper is unlocked, pulls one item from the 1st position of the minecart, and shoots it in a dropper/hopper line which returns it to the input chest...
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
Cool. Does it handle unstackable items, because that was my issue. If I filled the hopper then subtracted one item it allowed for 16 stackables (and more efficient 64 stackables) but would break if it got an unstackable item because it would take out the unstackable and have an empty slot as it went through the system.
@Jinx4one
@Jinx4one 4 жыл бұрын
@@metamilo I added a non-stackable filter betwen the input chest and the chest above the hopper minecart. All non-stackables are funneled directly to the output chest (for the items that are not found in system). The downside is that the for the first trip the minecart leaves with few items.

Keep in mind that the dropper elevator operates at double hopper speed so the items will be going down the water stream faster than the hoppers can pick them up so you'll get about half your items in the overflow chest. You can fix this by adding an item grouper at the beginning of the water stream, but even then some will probably to to the overflow. You're other option is to slow down the elevator but then you have to slow down the cart as well causing the whole system will slow down.

@@metamilo is there a way to slow down only the minecart? I don't really care if the sistem isn't the fastest. Or if you have another options for my problem what would you suggest?
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattiacunsolo4875 I'd just start by adding that cart delay system to the third side and see if that fixes things. You can look at how it works on the other sides and just duplicate that. If you need more delay than that can offer then you need to pause it as it's picking up the blocker items at the very bottom of it's path.

That's a good question. I know a lot changed between 1.12 and 1.23 but I wasn't doing much redstone at the time so I don't know much about the changes. Maybe someone else can drop a response here.

Pros and cons of the one without minecart and with minecart No minecart: Compact, but very tall Minecart: tileable, compact, but it's kinda harder to configure I think.

That's a good assessment. The modular one has a more complete feature set, but the minecart version has higher storage density.

@metamilo 3 жыл бұрын
Probably. Paper servers come in a large variety of versions, settings, and environments so it's impossible to say for sure. I know most people that have tried have got it to work, but there are also people who never did. Sorry I couldn't give you a solid answer, I just don't think there is one.

Aside from the hoppers facing into the storage chests (which is the same as most other storage systems) it should be fairly lag friendly.
