Gotta say, as sad as it was that the dude “suspected of having been beaten by a woman” had in fact been a sick pedo, I also find it troubling that the cops automatically assumed, before they knew the full story, that if he’d been beaten by a woman, he must have deserved it. I mean, I’m very glad they looked into it and arrested him but suppose he’d been a victim of abuse instead? If he’d been beaten by his partner, male or female, and was too embarrassed to say so, the cop would just be there assuming he’d done something wrong. Investigations need to be unbiased.

Human nature is a weird one, for sure. I think they call it the "bystander effect" or something similar? When I was taking CPR classes, they told us to point to someone specifically and tell them to call 911, when surrounded by onlookers, for this exact reason. Everyone assumes someone else already called. One the few times I've come across an emergency situation, I always call, regardless if someone else is on the phone. The dispatchers are generally happy that I've called and inform me that they already have a call about the situation; takes less than a minute.

All these people, standing around doing nothing reminds of an incident that happened in 2017. I live in a low income high-rise. There used to be an old man living in the building. I'll call him A. A was mentally ill and diabetic. He was grumpy, had no personal hygiene, and tried to bum stuff off people in the building multiple times a day. He refused to take personal responsibility for himself. Needless to say, no one in the building liked him. I noticed that his legs had swollen up and turned beet red, probably from the uncontrolled diabetes. Then he started having troubles walking. There's a bus stop right in front of our building and I took the bus back and forth to work. I was sitting on the front patio, waiting for the bus when A hobbled out the front door. He almost made it to a bench, but wound up taking a fall. I asked him if he was okay and he said he thought he broke his arm. I could see he was in a lot of pain. I called emergency services and waited with him until the ambulance came. News traveled fast in a high-rise, so when I got home from work, everybody knew what had happened. I always liked my neighbor, G and his wife, S because they're non-judgmental and empathetic people. G told me "You know, most people in the building would have just left him there on the pavement because he's so annoying. " Unfortunately, G is right.

My cousin who is a cop recounted a story of when he was visiting some friends for a hangi pit party (traditional maori food thing). They were having a few beers in the front yard when they hear this crazy screeching and then see a car bounce off a sturdy fence, hit a curb and cartwheel onto the lawn and stop less than 3 feet from one of the guys hosting. Woman staggers out of the car, in shock, bleeding all over. Clearly has a few broken bones. Car bursts into flame that soon goes out by itself. He and one of the other guys gets her into his car and he drives her, lights going on his unmarked car, full tilt to the nearest hospital. Once he's there he calls emergency services to try to cancel any ambulance phone calls they might have got. Turns out nobody called anything in. About 20 mins later his friend comes in with a kid who has an obvious broken leg who must have been thrown from the car as it spun out of control. Wild. Like 30 or so people were there and not one called an ambulance. Heck - nobody called a fire engine in case the car sparked up again.

Not calling for help from a large group of people is a "I'm sure someone else already has, so I don't need to" mentality. There is an official name for it, but basically it runs along the lines of, The more people around, the less help is likely to be given. Kind of a "passing the buck" statement. Hence for story 20, the story teller themselves where like "I'm sure you've already gotten a ton of calls about this..." because they assumed the same thing others had, except they still called "just in case".

I've noticed that it's not that people don't care. It's a weird mental condition involving herd mentality and shit. More or less, someone is waiting for someone else to do something first or their expecting other people to do it because their not sure if they'd be doing the right thing. It's that fear that they don't have any training and the fact that most people don't expect shit to happen until it does. It's weird. In the end though, it's better to call if you see strange behavior from someone. I had a car wreck out in the winter after it took a turn too quickly while going 45 with snow on the ground. No one stopped after she plowed through a log fence. The log punched through the driver side window and had been sharpened into a spear that was inches from taking her head off. I pulled over, threw on every light I had and contacted law enforcement. I'm not a cop, I work private security and do security patrols across various sites across several cities. No one stopped, no one called, I was the only one who pulled off and went to check on her. She was fine, a little upset her car got messed up, but I got her to laugh in the end. That was a rough year for a lot of reasons. For the love of God, if you even suspect something is wrong with someone, don't be afraid to call emergency services. Calling can get help rolling and save lives.
