Completely agree. Her ability to act 'neurotic' in the real sense of neuroticism is sublime. That is to say, the anguish and trauma which she is suffering from since the burglary was phenomenally acted.

Mike Baldwin is a depressingly realistic character , a flash slime ball who is very attractive to women. Corrie did reflect a slice of life 30 years ago, unlike the nonsense on our screens today.

The Ken Barlow of 1989-1990 was a very dislikable man. His behaviour since ditching Wendy Crozier was despicable, self-pitying and extremely selfish. He couldn't bear Deirdre moving on with her life, and wouldn't stop harassing her. Maybe he thought his affair with Wendy was payback for Deirdre's with Mike Baldwin and they were now "quits.". But looking back at 1982-83 episodes, you can see his pompous selfishness drove Deirdre away, into the arms of another man, whoever that man might have been. Pity Deirdre didn't stick with Dave Barton - but, of course, in real-life she did.

The cop investigating the Wilton's burglary is also PC Phil Bellamy from Heartbeat, another great and always re-watchable British TV series. As for the burglary itself, I love Jack's line: "Sherlock Percy - couldn't spot a burglar in Strangeways". Loving these retro Corrie episodes especially all the humour and likeable characters - just fast-forwarding all scenes containing the (humourless) and thoroughly unlikeable Ken Barlow.

I love watching these programs and picking up dated lines. Percy saying "He's a bad'un. His eyes are too close together. It's a sign." Not really a fan of Mavis I have to say. I think she could play anyone's grandmother and not a middle aged woman the way her character is presented but I think Derek is hilarious and especially a few months back when he was selling novelties and had a rival.

3:17:00 what is this shite all about, bringing back a character that a storyline has already played out and that no one has any interest in? I'm pretty sure everyone watching must have said WTF to themselves when it was known who she is. You may have noticed this a few times where they bring characters back into what I call, redeeming storylines. It's like an apology to the character for making them look bad the first time they appeared so they reintroduce them so they can smooth things over. Fred Gee's wife Eunice is a prime example as is Alma and happens especially at times when long standing characters have been dramatically altered for a time. This is a technique used to allow for example here, where Ken is off keel and Mike, who is being shown to be the person he probably was before he came to the street and not as likeable. Sally being pregnant is inevitable but it's a chance to parallel it with Gail being pregnant. We spend more time with Sally and see Gail only now and then. These snippets we see of Gail have her smiling and happy and not up to much, which is certainly not Gail and is done to subliminally throw the viewer off track to her true character and make them forget what a nasty waste of space she is plus at the same time pushing us into thinking that she is really nice, which she most certainly is not....not since 1978 anyway.

For me, all this negative, insecurity within a relationship nonsense is mostly what killed decent soap storylines. You can unplug an iron and it will still be able to do a bit more ironing, until it cols down. A bit like an oven that's been turned off. The heat remains inside and food remains cooking and hot for a while.
