This band was my savior when this song came out in 94. I was a sophomore and bullied for being different. I heard it and thought "You know, I'll wear my weirdness on my sleeve." and played it everyday as school was letting out. Still a fan of the band to this day.

Nobody's asking, but I'll share my thoughts on this song anyway. 🙂 I've liked this song since it first came out in the early 90s, and I've actually thought a lot about it off and on over the years. It seems to me that it's a ballad about alienation. The first two characters (the boy and the girl) are alienated by physical ailment. The boy acquires his disability while the girl is born with hers (the white hair and birthmarks aren't really the point; they symbolize physical disability or difference of one kind or another). Yet the third character, the religious boy, reveals a third type of alienation: cultural. His parents want him to come home right after school and at their church they shake and throw themselves to the church floor (presumably they are members of an ultra-fundamentalist Christian sect such as the Pentecostals or Quakers, whose members literally do the very behaviour referred to in the song). The telling line in the song is that the first two kids think the religious boy "has it worse" than them because he is completely ostracized from society by his own family (his parents, in the play audience, aren't even happy that he is participating in the play). Physical difference, be it deformity or disability, can be hard to live with, but cultural difference can make it even harder to fit in. Of course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong.
@alihasanaxe4936 Жыл бұрын
This is definitely the common interpretation, but I personally think it's about trauma, rather than alienation. First kid's hair goes white after his car crash, reminiscent of an adult's hair going grey faster when highly stressed. Given the rest of the song's explicit depictions of child abuse, it's possible the crash itself was a lie fabricated to hide a particularly hard beating or an attempt of the parents to be rid of him. Second kid refuses to get changed with the rest of the girls because she doesn't want them to see her "birth marks". She "couldn't quite explain it" because she's lying. The marks are either bruises, burns, or big scars. Third kid has it worst because he suffers the worst kind of trauma a child can experience: The deprivation of a childhood in the first place. He couldn't quite explain it because he's too young to understand what's actually happening and just goes along with what he's told. He hesitates so much in the video because he does have some idea of the perverse nature of his predicament. "mmm" is an agreement. It's sarcastic delivery, placement and the facial expression associated is another nod towards the deeper meaning. The chorus always starts after the child attempts to justify their trauma. The video really makes this more obvious: First kid's parents are hesitant to see their child re-enacting the crash, but are happy to see he seems to be handling it well. Second kid's parents don't show because only someone who didn't care about their child could hurt her so badly. Also, the purple birth marks support the bruise theory more. Third kid's parents hate that the kid is even part of the play. Despite their disgusting mistreatment of him, they still show because those acts are the result of good intentions. Final thing with the video is how the three suffering kids are the only ones shown bowing, which they do several times. They do this because they're putting on a show of being okay.

To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.

Dead on about that last verse and the boy looking back at his parents; the woman is great, how much she conveys with a sneer. When you realize in real life she's probably a punker whose favorite band is the Distillers it's even more impressive. Much pathos in those moments: shades of Neil and Dead Poets Society--to this day one of the most shatteringly tragic things I've ever seen in a film. I had a tyrant of a father, but I stood up to him, and if I hadn't I'd probably be dead too.

You're correct in your observation. By the early 90's the music industry was desperate for new sounds, so they were willing to give a broader range of acts a chance at success. It was a wonderful time to be a teenager; so many various musical acts. I'm not sure it will ever happen again... industry has changed.

I knew this song since release but never really paid attention to it. Now rediscovered, I think it is a masterpiece, lyrics and music

I only just heard this song and I love the vocals. Although I can't take his face very seriously at 2:51 haha must be an 80s thing :)

TheKZbinr Yes, music can change moods. When I don't have any energy, I listen to a song that makes me want to get up and dance. You probably already know this but just in case, stop drinking or eating anything with caffeine in it. Micah_Myers Hey.. I had monstrous anxiety attacks and palpitations for 30 years or more.. my heart should be shot.. I’m fine.. we’re resilient. just remember there’s a purpose even though it’s misery.. it’s Karma and we’re not allowed to know why..

There are certain 90’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.

Same. I was in my early teens when this song came out and I remember riding in my sister's car when she mentioned how much she liked his voice. Just little memories that come and go in snippets, but the feeling comes back clear as day. Getting teary eyed just thinking about it now. I miss those days so much. My mom was alive and healthy, my sisters were both around, and we were young and carefree. 😔
