There is actually a lot to be said for being polite and bowing out gracefully if you get shot down. There is nothing more manly and confident than saying "oh, that's a shame, have a nice evening" and moving on. Conversely, there is nothing more childish and off-putting than pitching a hissy fit and screaming obscenities. If you're so fragile that you can't take rejection, you aren't ready for a relationship.

What I learned today: - Cringe is a wave function - Asterisks roleplay cannot be heriditary, because it otherwise would have dissapeared by now - Every human beeing has amazing social skills compared to these people - The impression of beeing nice invalidates consent - A surprising ammount of people send text messages to people that aren't worth their time - Controlling your emotions is very hard - If you know the ammount of people that are afraid of beeing called gay, you know the ammount of people sending creepy texts - If you know the ammount of people sending creepy texts, you know the ammount of people that are afraid of beeing called gay - Having a boyfriend is inapropriate

Yeah, either around people you know/trust, or in a coffee place (in early afternoon, lunchtime, or whatever) are the best ones, as if you have people you know they'll shield you, and you can always rejoin them, and a coffee place is very public, and makes it easy to leave. If you're meeting someone for the first time, make sure it's somewhere where you can be seen, and where you can reasonably leave whenever you want (potentially set an alarm with your ring tone, and set your phone screen to be an incoming call, just for the perfect excuse). Also, afternoon rather than evening means there's lots of light, and lots of normal people around, which is also very good.

Yep and we don't know the conversation that led to that decision for their first casual meet up in person. It could have been he suggested that day and the only way it could work is if he joined her in the pub she was already going to be in. When I met a guy for the first time I took him to my local pub but told everyone first. Everyone gave us space and acted like they didn't know me but were all keeping an eye out to make sure I was okay. He was fine for the first couple of drinks then turned crazy. I thanked him for the date and said I was going home but he insisted on more drinks. As he tried to order more I shook my head slightly at the barman. He saw how belligerent he was being and kicked him out, keeping me in the safety of the bar. It's always safest to be somewhere there are people who care about you.

The only men who should be "disgusted" at the mention of a vulva _are gay men._ And even then, not all gay men are freaked out by female genitalia [though many are]. So, in addition to saying "menstruation" and "vulva" and "clitoris", she should have, after watching him get "disgusted", asked, "Why are you so freaked out by female genitalia? Are you gay? Because usually only gay guys are freaked out by it." Rest assured, these misogynists are also homophobic and insecure. Throwing my suggestion into the mix is _guaranteed_ to set them off even more. Feel free to use it, ladies!

@John_Weiss 2 жыл бұрын
@@everything5066 Well, I _am gay._ And have been out _for 30 years._ I have seen the misogyny in the gay community. A substantial number are weirded out by vulvas. And yes, I was talking about gay cis men. Because I'm talking about responding to the incels, who are guaranteed to be homophobic _cis_ heteros. And yes, _there are the gay trans men._ And there are gay cis men who are grossed out by the though of having sex with a gay trans guy. I'm not one of them. But there are many gay cis men who are freaked out by vulvas, and thus, cannot bring themselves to have sex with anyone who has one. And a subset of these gay cis men are what I call, "sh1tty, sh1tty, f@gg0ts," because they extend their disgust with vulvas to mistreatment of the guys who have them. Which, as I just said, is really sh1tty. But I don't judge the ones who _are not_ sh1tty to trans gay men, but for whom a vulva is, "a deal breaker," so to speak. Is there anything I've missed? Is there anyone else you all think I've potentially excluded or offended that I haven't talked about I consider it obvious? Anything else obvious that anyone wants me to genuflect to? Or can we return to brainstorming ways to troll the incels?

The whole thing of using asterisk RPs as icebreakers is so frustrating, because it gives roleplay a bad name. RP can be really fun, especially if everyone involved is imaginative and good at writing. You can be literally anyone or anything you want, and do whatever you want, as long as the other person is comfortable with it. It's a shame that these creeps try to use a fun hobby in such a crappy way.

And they're not even doing it in style, or good in any way! Their grammar is all over the place, there's no distinct perspective, no tact, no order to the message... and that's on top of the cringy creepiness of pushing themselves onto others like that. I was on an RP chat quite regularly back in the day, and yes, we had some saucy plays - and yes, some of us players got into relationships, affairs, met in real life... all the good stuff. But people always asked beforehand, and accepted a No, no matter if it was the fictional play between characters going somewhere, or a conversation between the players.

I once got an asterisk role play pickup line that was... Very intense. So I sent them a lick to a webside where people can write fanfictions (sexual or not). He was soooo offended, he dropped the role play act and criticised we for not reacting like everyone else allowing him to continue being a creep. From experience, even if I did not participate in the role play and just spoke like a normal person, he would have kept going with his role play anyway. He was pissed that I cut that off for him with nothing but a link. I wish I knew reddit existed back then I would have kept the screenshots.

My husband and I do "creepy asterisks" when we text each other all the time. HOWEVER! 1) we were already married by the time we even heard about this phenomena 2) we do it as an inside joke cuz we both have dark senses of humor and love to ad lib and create outrageous scenarios together. If you're meeting someone for the first time and want to make a good impression, creepy asterisks are never the way to go about it and should only be used when you know for a fact the other person will respond positively to it. My husband and I both agree that if we had tried this tactic with our very first conversation ever we would not be married to each other right now.

Honestly, any time you are scared, you are in the right. If you feel unsafe, you are right to do so, and no one can tell you different. If you think you are in danger, find somewhere safe. If their first instinct isn't to make you feel safe, that's not good and you shouldn't feel bad for being cautious. You can "over-react" and back out as many times as you want, but you can only make a fatal mistake once. So be safe.

You're never wrong for following your gut though, as sad as it is that some humans simply can't be trusted, and if it's an overreaction it's fine, they'll either understand or prove it was actually a perfectly reasonable response if they're not concerned. Really, I hope everyone stays safe and knows this video and others like it Click covers is a list of what not to do OR accept others doing toward you. Lo, many, many moons ago in the summer of my life I was part of an online message board/chat that was imagined by all of us as a house with many rooms. These rooms were collectively built by the members of the chat and yes, we used the asterisk bracketed practice of describing what we were doing in the house. I was the Bordello Mistress TM. I would build rooms in the bordello all the time and had a tradition of doing so on specific holidays. I believe said bordello had fantastical rooms that were doors to far off fantasy lands, or meant for very adult activities. Around Christmas time I would "decorate" the main room using the asterisk bracketed technique as in, "R enters the room and reaches for the Construction Fairy Dust TM. Just a pinch and there is a 12 ft. tree waiting to be decorated.* It was great fun, and in that context asterisks are quite useful. We also had a dungeon in which to drop our least favorite politicians (from around the world, we had had people from everywhere) in order to subject them to our Rodent Cannon TM. We also had a soap box nicknamed Soapy which was handy when someone needed to rant. The chat doesn't exist anymore in that form, but it was an example that the asterisk bracketed description can be useful in specific contexts.

In the kink community, there's even the whole concept of "covering someone." It's something that's _especially_ done with/for submissive people who have their first session with a new dominant. They'll have a friend or two on standby that will either call them at a specific time to give them a graceful way out of a bad situation or mount a rescue if they don't answer. She must have been getting a lot of fans writing that they wished for a lifebonded partner because a character in a later book uses that exact argument. Rather be in a relationship where we've chosen each other than forced into one by the gods.

Stars, even when I lead with "I have auditory processing issues, please speak more clearly" (as in, _actually enunciate_ instead of slurr shit together), people still get upset with me or refuse to repeat something and then wonder why I either don't understand what they said, or decide I don't want to interact with them.

I can't be sure, but the asterisks rp thing seems to be a remnant from the old chatrooms in the mid to late 90's - it was fairly common for people to "hook up" through such cringey roleplay. Thing is, odds are both parties were cishet dudes. _Especially_ in the ones where one was supposedly female. Also, this suggests some very cringe things about the age of the guys still using it.
@ConstantChaos1

It's still a viable thing for people who want to do it, especially for people in more rural areas where a drive of 3+ hours is normal for a date. RP is a big part of life out here lol

As someone who used chatrooms in the late 90s, no. I've never seen anything like this before watching Click's videos. What people were calling "cyber sex" was more like phone sex where you describe what - you - want to do to each other; and yes, you never knew for sure if the other person was male or female, but girls did it too. It wasn't like this role playing where you refer to yourself in the 3rd person. I get the impression this is influenced by Manga/anime which was still very niche back then, not at all mainstream, so I don't know if people who were into it role played like this, but it definitely wasn't the norm. Even if you were into vampire stuff, which was a lot more popular, it was still 1st person describing what you want to do. I never ever saw, nor can I imagine, anyone using such a weak, self conscious, insecure projection of themselves as a way to attract women. If you wanted to communicate that you were the opposite of someone like Brad Pitt, then intelligent and slightly ironic cynicism was the standard attitude to adopt.

I think the reason asterisk pickup likes are so popular is *because* they don't work. So all the people using them keep getting unmatched, and trying again, and again, and again. They just don't learn. So they make up a disproportionate number of openings, because they do the opening, immediately get blocked, and immediately go again.

To explain the asterisks role play. Its more used within these hidden communities. Like there is a whole side to Twitter that make role play accounts. While these are more consensual and acknowledge that this is just pure fantasy, these creeps can't understand that what works in an understood system does not work in the real world

Every time I hear someone talk about asterisk roleplay, I mishear and think that they’re talking about cosplaying Asterix (Asterix & Obelisk). I always get excited that someone is playing a classic comic book character who’s not a traditional superhero, and I’m always disappointed. I honestly should have figured that out by now.
