I once heard a teacher ask another teacher why it’s illegal to ask kids to help with teacher work (such as, cleaning the entire school with the janitor, staying after hours to take care of the sports teams, etc)… I didn’t want to get detention for telling her that it counts as child labour
@angrynoodletwentyfive6463 Жыл бұрын
the issues isn't even that it would be bad for the kid to do that as a punishment, it is actually a very effective punishment and thats why it is frequently used by parents the issue is that allowing schools to use it as a punishment creates an incentive to do so. If it were like what they do in japan where its the entire school and it is built into the schedule it would probably also not be an issue. But giving schools the ability to single out individual students to do chores around the school is a recipe for exploitation.

Interesting thing about the shorter work week thing: My employer wanted to try out hiring someone to do a full time job on 22.5 hrs a week by raising the hourly wage. I took said job, it works out to a small pay cut (200 less a month) on my previous full time position but literally I only work 4.5hrs a day. I am easily more productive than I have ever been in my life, and more productive than my full time predecessor, and company is saving 200 a month in wages. @@amandatownsend5132 It works well for me, but I can definitely see it not working for everyone. My position lets me work from a variety of locations, be it office, on site or at home, and I often have to change up my start and end times to suit the business needs. It only works because I have no family commitments and can self manage my work load. A lot of people tend to waste a certain amount of office hours being unproductive, I just basically cut that time out and only work productively for 4.5 hrs a day and then im done. This kind of working is somewhat common in my company, but many don't take it up because they miss the socialising and teams support, and most struggle to self motivate or lack the discipline to not just watch netflix lol. I think its good when employers offer a range of working patterns to suit all kinds of people. The company I work for is extremely accomodating and disability friendly, so I count myself lucky! fun fact: when multiple languages share words with similar meanings, it's called a cognate. as for words that sound similar but not exact, those are near cognates. usually these happen becausue the languages have similar roots (hence french, spanish, portuguese, etc all have them frequently) but in some cases, it is a result of imperialism, like how japanese katakana was developed to make communication with english people easier, thus words like Amber in english become アンバー (Anba) or Royal becoming ロイヤル (Roiyaru) whereas words in kanji or hiragana sound nothing like english words, such as transform becoming 返信 (henshin. litteraly translating into change form)

I love that Click went into mutual intelligibility. There are languages with incongruous mutual intelligibility, such as the Danish, Swedish, Norwegian grouping or some dialects of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French where people can understand some of what is said in a language that they don’t speak because they speak a related language. But it’s not nearly so easy as understanding different regional variants of the same language. Some linguists argue that dialects are just different languages with a very high degree of mutual intelligibility. From what I understand, this is generally a recognition of how language is used differently in different areas and by different groups, resulting in a loss of nuance and different word choice. To me, this would imply that what most laypeople would consider to be a language is actual a grouping of several closely related languages that all can understand each other, but which speak differently. Not just an accent, but entirely different word choice. Things like Brits calling the last letter of the English alphabet zed whereas Americans call it zee, Italian cucumbers are called courgettes by Brit’s and zucchini by Americans, aubergines vs eggplants, roquette vs arugula. It’s a fascinating branch of linguistic study which has some application to everyday life.

At least that's how it works at tb. The poor dude obviously did not want to go out and harass the customer, that manager shouldn't be one
@tenshikaren11 ай бұрын
Every fast food restaurant in my town has assured me that it is illegal to take the food back from the customer because they cannot legally give it to another after it is in the hands of the first. Therefore, all food that is accidentally given out is free, and the company usually doesn't really care unless it happens a lot at a certain site, in which case they send people out and managers have to account for where the inventory went on their shift with records. The other reason they are not allowed to take it back is basically the same reason it is against policy for a grocery checker to prevent someone from stealing their register drawer or run after a person who is shoplifting into the parking lot. It's one thing to let a person know they... 'forgot' to check out, but it can lead to a dangerous situation for the employees and that costs the company money. They have insurance to cover theft and they build loss of revenue from giving out too much inventory and mistakes into the price of everyone's meals.

It's the same reason why you shouldn't give away puppies for free. Having a significant cost attached makes it less likely that unscrupulous people will take them just for bad purposes. Making the process difficult and expensive makes it 1) unprofitable to use it as an avenue for trafficking, and 2) vets the adopting parents' financial ability to care for the child. To be fair from what I understand, even in Pokemon, only some individuals in a certain species evolve. So even though there are Raichus running around there is still a population of Pikachus for example. So if I understand correctly and Pokemons dont just evolve naturally as they grow older, this game for kids has a better understanding of evolution than these people do
@laurencefraser2 жыл бұрын
Scientifically speaking, the Theory of Evolution has been very useful. However, at least as it's ever been explained to me, it has some rather serious problems when considered as an explanation for the origin of species. The issues with it mostly revolve around complexity, probability, and what my brother likes to call the 'eaten by lions' problem. Interestingly, that angle is never the one that the sort of nutters who get into arguments over such things on social media come up with. Funny that.
@digi49982 жыл бұрын
@@laurencefraser From the complexity aspect, from my understanding, it's pretty much "if you have infinite monkeys typing on infinite typewriters for an infinite amount of time, you'll eventually get Shakespeare." As for the 'eaten by lions', I'm not sure what you're talking about. I've never heard it before.
@nienke77132 жыл бұрын
@Laurence Fraser the "issues" you mention are quite vague, so I hope I'm intepreting them correctly. Complexity: Assuming you're wondering how complexity comes about trough evolution: there are just random mutations that happen in living things all the time; some will aid survival and reproduction, whilst others harm it, and yet others don't make a difference. If it aids survival and/or reproduction then is has a higher chance of being passed on to offspring and as such these genes tend to become common in a population of a species. If it harms survival and/or reproduction, then it has a smaller chance of being passed on, and therefore likely die out in the population. If something is neutral, then is has the normal chance of beig passed on and will create diversity in the population. Whether a trait is beneficial, harmful, or neutral, can also depend on the environment, so as species migrate to various places, the mutations that end up being useful will be different, and at some point these species will be genetically too different to breed and have fertile offspring. Environments also change with time, so species also need to keep adapting to survive. Over time, we get more variety in species and increasingly complex creatures because every mutation makes them a bit more complex. As a result, it is not just possible but even necesary for there to be a lot of variation and complexity. Probability: Are you asking how probable it is that things evolved like this? The thing is, because mutations work in this sort of self-selecting way where positive ones get added and negative ones die off, with small mutations being very common, only a small amount of them need to be beneficial or neutral for evolution to work, most can just be harmful and die off. Combine that with how long it's been going (and generation times of very early lifeforms was likely to be rsther short, just like many microorganisms can reproduce rapidly nowadays), it is highly probable. "Eaten by lions": are you wondering how it can be humans exist and we weren't eaten by lions before we could evolve into the form we have now? Plenty of other species exist that also weren't eaten by lions; the trick is: you don't need to outrun the lions, you just need to be faster than the others and the lions will have a prey to feast on which isn't you. Those who were least fit to the conditions of evading lions would indeed have been eaten, but those who outrun or outsmarted the unfortunafe lived to tell the tale and reproduce.

I had to check out the 'sissy boy' book after seeing it there and told the husband I need it as it would be an interesting read. A review to it says: T. Dreiling 5.0 out of 5 stars Most important study on feminine boys. Reviewed in the United States on 8 August 2011 Verified Purchase Although this study was published in 1987 it still remains one of the most important works on homosexuality, transsexualism and feminine behavior in boys. When green started this study he wanted to/thought he was investigating the origins of transsexualism by following more than 30 feminine boys who were all called "sissies" by other children. Several of the boys also said either that they wanted to be girls or that they were girls. To his eventually surprise all most all these boys ended being gay and NOT transsexual, at age 18 only one was unsure of his gender identity. Also of interest is that over the years, with no reparative therapy or "pushing" from the parents many of these boys became more much masculine as they grew up, it seems as though their feminine qualities simply "burned out" and they became regular masculine identified gay men. Yes this study is often used to justify reparative therapy to prevent homosexuality in feminine boys but that was IN NO WAY the intent or purpose of study, it was an observational study not interventional. Over the years Richard Green has proven to be an ally of the gay and trans community and he can not be held responsible for the co opting of his work by others. So yeah, added to my must have book list.

when you wrote 'with no therapy or pushing from the parents most of the boys grew out of it' At first I read that as if they were pushed they would have become trans and you were doing that whole "they are turning the kids trans!" thing. They couldn’t actually proof that they used the trademark enough and correctly according to trademark law. They lost it for the most impotent class, which was the actual food because the name was never on the actual product, just always on the flyers and advertising for it or the wrappers.

Supermac's isn't the only one. KFC also semi-successfully sued Pat Grace for creating an unlicensed KFC chain after he had gotten the original KFC recipe (apparently through legit means.) He had to stop using their branding, but he just renamed the chain to "Pat Grace's Famous fried Chicken." Today there is only one branch left, and it has been renamed to Chicken Hut, but they actually use the original KFC recipe. Not even KFC truly uses that anymore.

I once had a job in IT where I was going out on a factory floor working under machines to fix the computers. Needless to say, it was not unusual for me to come back to the office from working on equipment and be absolutely covered in what was hopefully just dust, grease, and oils. Occasionally, I managed to have the extra fun of getting coated in printer toner and look like a giant tie-dyed office mascot. Work still wanted me to wear a business casual outfit with khakis, dress pants, or a dress. Washing that stuff some weeks was a nightmare.
