Majority of South Africans are not originally from Joburg so during winter school breaks kids go to their villages in mostly rural parts of South Africa depending on which province one is originally from. December holidays you’d literally see less than a dozen people in your neighbourhood cause almost everyone would’ve gone home.

@@zinhle_dladla I don’t think I’m responsible to teach you the English language but I’ll make an exception. Village and Rural are not derogatory terms. Village: a group of houses and associated buildings, larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town, situated in a rural area. Rural: in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the town. I’m from Ga-Mphahlele, Limpopo and I live in a fairly larger house than most over-a-million rand houses in Joburg’s urban areas but that doesn’t mean my house is not in a Village!

I'm from Cape Town, we used to go to the beach, mountain climbing, biking, spend a week at our Grandmothers, picnic , drives around the Cape Peninsula, fishing with our Mom at a pond or river. We were seven kids and my mother kept us entertained every single day. Winter she would teach us to knit, crochet, we would read, draw, have all kinds of plays, craziness. Your kids will remember those things forever.

@@AshleyinAfrikapaper towels are certainly a thing for some of us (😅I'd rather use those instead of having to use and wash the cloth ones). Camps are a thing (but usually in the suburbs and some other areas). For example, I grew up going to camps during the winter (june/july) holidays, but the camps are usually hosted by church groups or other such organizations. We also have Vacation Bible School (just a Christian based camp) in some churches, and general camps like the ones you have in America but those are rare and expensive so most children don't get to go.

Camps aren't a thing because mid year break is winter for us and its cold, we don't want to be sending our kids to log cabins and have them sleep in cold halls. in Summer most people take leave so we have time to spend with the kids but there's also beach camps. A lot of us also lean on the grandparents as well, its cheaper lol. I used to go to my grandmother's every school break, even when I was in University.

I just stumbled upon this and I love hearing about visitors’ perspectives of the country. Any other South African feeling heartbroken she said local flights are affordable? I was like, girl, where? The Rand needs to get its act together. 😂 Thank you for this positive review. You chose to come at the worst time, Winter season, but trust me the weather will get better around September. 💕 Camps are generally pricey, so only those with money know about them. The majority of kids just stay at home and wait for schools to reopen. June and December are the only time school holidays are long, they’re usually a week-long. Kids and teachers need a break, too. 😅

Hi Ashley! When it comes to children being on school break, at least as I remember from my own childhood and what I see of parents today, it is very uncommon for parents to hire "babysitters" or send their kids to camp. Usually, the domestic worker that a family may hire to clean the house keeps an eye on the kids (not quite like a nanny in that if they are school age she doesn't play with or entertain them per se but attends to their needs) and prepares snacks and lunch before the parents come home. Domestic workers are very affordable and very beloved here in South Africa because of this very versatility. I still remember one of my family's, Linda, who made the best hot dogs for lunch and always cut them diagonally, which I thought was so cool!🌭💖 Also, it is quite customary that most household workers in SA are multidisciplinary. If you ask, many domestic workers will be happy to look after small babies AND clean the house (and they should be paid accordingly.) Gardeners too tend to be good at yard work, cleaning windows and walking pets (my sweetboi who is in doggy heaven now adored our gardener and our gardener was deeply saddened when he passed). Particularly if you have a gardener from a neighbouring Southern African country where agriculture is foundational (eg Malawi/Zambia/Zimbabwe) they prove to be very savvy at growing crops and can help you grow a vegetable garden if you ask! In conclusion, house workers are very valuable to South Africans and are willing to go above and beyond their "job descriptions" because of how desperately they want to keep their jobs; all the more reason they should be paid well and looked after as well. So if you're not hiring one, you might want to consider it to take a little stress off your own shoulders!😊💖
@kakonthebed
@kakonthebed Жыл бұрын
Black women in this country are by far the most oppressed group who need the most help. Especially domestic workers, they’re exploited to hell. They’re a large part of white South Africa (and some Indian households), sure, but virtually none of them are compensated for their labour the way they should be. Not being able to see your own children just to have to look after someone else’s is not a life anyone should be living.

this is a very interesting perspective and somewhat valid based on the places you've visited and what you've experienced of the country. I almost reacted but then I guess everything is relative to context. In my opinion I could say SA is an underdeveloped, developing and developed country (depending on where you spend most of your time). To give a simple counter to what you mentioned about school holidays being long , I wouldn't say that is entirely true because they (public schools) mostly close for 1 and a half week to about 3 weeks at most (thats the mid year break and December holidays boosted by the number of public holidays) and if you think about it, there is actually 249 days of weekdays (365 - 104 days of the weekends - 12 public holidays = 249) and school takes up 200 -210 days (which is 80-84% of that). Look at it this way: A two-week break in March/April, A three-week holiday in June/July, A one-week break in September/October, A longer holiday of around four to five weeks in December/January. And during those breaks back then that is when kids would be more outside playing, learning and growing (mostly at no cost) but in today's world screens and likes I can understand what you are saying, keeping them entertained is now a task that parents have to be hands on about(and could be costly). ref>>> www.gov.za/about-sa/school-calendar Anyways SA represents a good balance of so many things, including cultures, If it wasn't for the political leadership issues we would easily have been a 100x better than what the country is right now(and I am hopeful we will get there still). Ultimately SA is beautiful country with great possibilities, so much potential (stemming from the beautiful visions and the challenges we have). We are grateful to have people like you who are in it to contribute and help make this country even better for the greater good of humanity. 😎😎

Hi there, I'm South African, and I have to say, it depends on how you treat us, I'm not generalizing or anything here but please keep the common American superiority complex away, it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths. (I don't know how to explain, but a lot of Americans seem to believe that they are better than us for some *insert reason*, I've seen it from all the different types of Americans no matter which part of the country they're from or what culture they're a part of, they usually have different reasons for it, but they all come off in a similarly bad way) What I recommend is please learn about the general do's and don'ts because a lot of people seem to not do that, and then they get themselves into trouble. Also, please stay away from sensitive matters, like race and politics if it wasn't spoken to you first. And please don't generalize, not all South Africans are the same, and not all people from different cultures are the same, I can't talk for everyone but my culture's bad people fucked our rep in the ass so hard it might never recover and I'm deeply sorry for the shit they've done.

We'd go to the grandparents for the entire holiday. It was total bliss. We were kids. Adults really didn't really feature. When we got older we stayed with our grandparents half of the holiday and other half home visiting friends. The only scheduled activity would be family holiday. We were taught from an early age to keep ourselves busy. Really taught us how to be independent. I'm a stay-at-home mom now, I feel truly blessed raising my son but I can tell you that I am very grateful that my mother-in-law moved closer and my son can go spend a week with her over the holidays. Mom and dad needs a breather sometimes. I really enjoyed your perspective. What I love most about South Africa and South Africans are our humour. It can be the worst situation and we can poke fun at it, make the best of the situation and carry on.

Lol in my experience, school holidays you either get shipped off to a family member somewhere for a visit, or you stay at home. US Summer break is much longer but obviously they have summer school and stuff.

Thank You for giving SOUTH African men a great review ☺️... We contently hear how bad and trash we are, even when most of us are ally to women equality and gender parity in the workspaces and elsewhere. There other aspects of our African ways that we wish to keep without being viewed as being backwards, things such as being a head of the household, provider, protector and so on Sorry for digressing, just wanted to SAY THANKS FOR THAT COMMENT

@@RSinclair-nb3is I understand all that and I supporting it being exposed, dealt with and brought to an end. I think it is a collusion between the outspoken modern women nature(which I have no issues with whatsoever, myself) and the conservative views gender roles. At it, my issue is the bundling all men into one thing and trash naming us all, it makes it a bit harder to be an ally for these issues

I've noticed that in the last few years a lot of the charismatic and traditional churches have holiday programmes for kids that run during school holidays, and there are a few baking and art classes here and there. But you have a point that there's a need for structure and the information should be easily available.

Answering as a South African who recently moved to the United States I think it differs per household ,we use a lot of paper towels at home I think the Ubers this side are so much more expensive 😭and depending on what State you’re in ,it’s hard to get Public transport so a licence is a must.Most kids here start working on their licence and learners permit at 15,16 When it comes to the weather I wasn’t surprised by the snow and cold because I went to boarding school in Free State and it gets freezing cold that side but I was surprised by how hot it is here and very humid…like you’d open the door only for hot air to blow into the house 😭plus since most of the houses aren’t made from brick ,it gets really hot With Camps ,most schools host camps ,I used to go camping a lot but true they don’t have the summer break camps like here ,my little brother goes to summer camp everyday it’s almost like he’s still at school during summer break Regarding stuff to do ,that’s true . I found that most activities are easier to access in SA for example I enjoy ice skating …in SA the rink opens every day unless they have events but here the rink opens some times and is mostly accessible for Hokey players 😭or the activities are just too far but Boston has some really nice stuff to do especially if you look around plus it’s filled with students so it’s more lively There are things that are I find really convenient here I like how they have a lot of drive throughs ,pharmacies ,food ,ATM and the gas stations are self service…I like these kinds of stuff cause I’m not into the whole interacting with people thing 😂also the working hours here are so flexible and jobs are accessible to everyone and they even train you before any job so it’s easy to get a job Both countries are really great

We didn't grow up rich so my parents used to take us camping every holiday. That way we got to see South Africa. It also gives you more money to spend on activities around the camping area. Winter holidays we went to places like Pilanesburg, Dikololo..somewhere in the bush where we could see game or go for walks in the bush. In April we would go camping in Mozambique and in Dec we would camp close to beaches or water resorts. The campsites are usually situated around the same areas where you will find chalets..we just didn't spend much on accommodation but still got to experience the same activities and sights.

We send kids to the grandparents during holidays, as a lot of people in the City actually come from rural areas where their parents still live in, so holidays are an opportunity for kids spend time with their relatives back "home". To see the natural beauty , you really need go visit Mpumalanga province, you will see: God's window, Kruger national park, Sudwala caves, Burkluck potholes, macmac pools, macmac falls, etc

On the school break thing.... We always went camping. There's plenty camping places on the outskirts of Joburg or just shortly out. It's like mini vacations before the year end big summer break/holidays. Now one thing to note that I've noticed as a South African is that black people don't camp. It's mostly white Afrikaans people and coloured people. So it also depends on who you talk to and mostly hang out with. My family are avid campers lol. I'm also assuming camping means like in tents, caravans etc. There's such wonderful places not far from Joburg with pools and water parks etc.

You should try to visit Umghlana Rocks during the summer holidays. Beautiful beaches, lots of coffee shops and restaurants and a huge mall with lots of shopping and entertainment. The village part of Umhlanga is walkable, so you don't need a car, but all other attractions are close by. It does however get very busy in season since half of Gauteng decamps to the seaside during the summer and Christmas holidays. ( southern hemisphere ~ summer Christmas 😉)

Welcome to South Africa my sister Ashley. I love your work, bringing awareness to our brothers & sisters in the diaspora. Tell them we need their skills & exposure. Please ask them to establish more platforms, especially black sponsorship on talent; business; practical skils; & technological skills. Inform them that what they get free in America espcially on the technology & internet side; we get them at a great cost or they are blocked for South Africans. We need a real true eye that also discloses our miseries embedded in our disadvantaged history; & the current geopolitical oppressed state of affairs. Thank you for expose our good & glomerous side, but please kick start the initiative platform of help from our diaspora brothers & sister, for our survival depends on their true understanding of our difficulties. Tell them we love them. I also love you & you work. What you just started is very powerful, you must never stop it. What you do is opening the Iron Curtain to the other side. Thank you so much❤❤❤. We need much more black people like you from the diaspora to invest on this blocked; purposefully stagnated side.With ❤❤❤ Happy.
