Probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but Mortarion was essentially right. He might have hated psykers, and his talk of loving Magnus was clearly BS, but his primary message was basically that the power of the Warp was too dangerous to be regulated by any except the Emperor. Magnus was indeed irresponsible, cavalier and arrogant, and he did ultimately damn his Legion and himself.

@@RAD1111able Calling Mortarion a Hypocrite I find silly. He is enslaved to chaos. Its not like he is acting predominantly of his own volition. Heck he even becoming a slave to chaos was again not a choice he really made. He got tricked into doing it. So ya I guess you can call him a hypocrite. However I dont see that is accurate in this case.

What's always interested me is the approach of the Primarchs during the Council of Nikea. Three arguments, all within the same spectrum, going from one extreme to the next. Like a paradigm it shifts. With Mortarion, his outright hatred of psykers stems from his upbringing on Barbarus. A planet shrouded in toxic gas and ruled by a xenos psyker race. He saw the depths of cruelty, experienced it first hand and it forever left an imprint on him. His hate for psykers only grew as the Emperor, an unfathomably power psyker stole his chance at vengeance against his "father". This left him bitter, and filled with hate that would fester as the years would go by. We see this pretty clearly due to the Death Guards lack of librarius. As we see later on, his inability to learn and grow would only nurture that immense distaste for psykers to the point that when the council happened Mortarion took the opportunity to finally air his frustrations and tear down psykers as a whole. His pettiness, his spite, were shown in an instant as he truly broadcasted his hypocrisy and victim complex. It's only further illistrated that he would go to the lengths of saying how much he loved his brother, when in fact he simply said it as a means to further his argument. Summed up "I'm going to makemy issues everyone elses problem." With Russ it's a common missconception that his outlook is that of Mortarions. It's far more nuanced. Wolfpriests much like White Scar Stormseers draw on the warp sparringly. They drink from the chalice, but only slightly as to avoid indulging too deeply in powers they know are dangerous. Russ is a stubborn, prideful, boastful individual, but we also know his love for his brothers, as well as his loyalty and honest nature are unquestionable. He didn't speak against Magnus as much as he was warning him, and everyone else present the dangers of unchecked warp indulgence. Where as Wolfpriests would only dip their feet into the waters that were the immaterium, the Thousand Sons would dive headfirst into the deepest end in pursuits of knowledge and power. It's a matter of self control, which Magnus does not exhibit at all and Russ spoke to. Magnus is the other end of this extreme. Where as Mortarion is the antithesis and detractor, Magnus is its greatest proponent and supporter. Psykers are incredibly useful, extremely valuable and when trained can become some of the greatest tools in thier respective factions hands. We see this with navigators and astropaths. It is however shown that they can be incredibly dangerous if left unchecked, which is why blackships exist for example. Magnus, for all his great strengths snd virtues was an arrogant, and boastful figure with no regards for restraint or caution when indulging in matters of the immaterium. His approach during the council was to akin to a shakespearean monologue, playing at how he was being persecuted, how they are judging him without pretext or knowledge. He didn't attempt to downplay or refute their claims of unchecked warp sorcery, and in the end it backfired. Interestingly enough however, after the council convened and judgement rendered Magnus -still- went about his delving of warp magic and as we see later on it backfired spectacularly. It all makes for a wonderful blend of storybeats that goes to show each Primarch, despite being a demi-god is still human. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.

Magnus might have stood a chance if he focused on dismantling Mortarion's point about requiring a Draconian control of psykers. He could have pointed out that Prospero's society was saved and edified by psykers. Healers and scholars, defenders and warlocks, the same that save countless lives on the battlefield. He could agree that psychic abilities are a part of the individual that will not go away, and that discipline and oversight are important to avoid abuse, but that understanding the abilities and providing mentorship will probably yield better results than fear and judgment. But instead Magnus chose a blatant revision of the Allegory of the Cave, which both Big E and Malcador know and probably worked against him. Magnus was not a gifted orator.

I’m actually listening to this book right now on Audiobook and this part was indeed a heartbreaking moment. The betrayal from Weirdmake to Magnus speech all for it to end in the condemnation of a noble Legion who did not deserve their fate. I am on chapter twenty six’s and it’s building up to the eventual attack on Prospero. I never really cared that much about the thousand sons or Magnus story. But now I care more than I can express.

Magnus was almost entirely responsible for his own fate. The Emperor's judgement at Nikea was specifically directed at Magnus; he just made it a proclamation about the Librarius in order not to single Magnus out publicly. His speech about power and those who seek it without wisdom might as well have been tailor made for Magnus, and all Magnus did was ignore it because he thought he knew better. Plus Magnus himself made it abundantly clear that he thought he was doing absolutely nothing wrong in spite of the fact that his legionaries were literally using daemons as tutelaries. What makes it all worse is that Magnus knew how dangerous the Warp was, but simply thought he was smart enough and powerful enough to disregard it all. He even knew essentially what Tzeentch was when he made his pact with him; he simply thought he'd beaten Tzeentch and didn't need to be concerned. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that if Magnus had shown even the slightest bit of humility or caution at Nikea, the Emperor's judgement probably never would have occured.

@@DeusExMachina10001 I mean to be fair the main accuser Leman Russ was also saying “My Runepriests aren’t psykers because they are not and our magic comes from Fenris with no proof other than our word that it does” and we all know Mortarion’s a hypocrite who wanted Magnus to suffer no matter what was said due to his hatred of Psykers. But I concede the point as you are right, Magnus had a lot of opportunities to do the right thing but it always ended badly, because he was so arrogant he thought he knew better and this only really sells the tragedy of the Thousand sons. Their father tried his best but didn’t listen and thought he was better. They genuinely did have a good chance at helping to enlighten the galaxy and bringing it back out of the ignorance and superstition that had shrouded it since old night, but because of Arrogance that chance was forever lost.

Mortarian had a strong argument given that unchecked psykers would spell doom. He sees and understands that the road to damnation is paved with good intentions which we all know Magnus eventually falls into. I also think Mortarian was correct in his assessment of Magnus' practices as well as his concern for his brother. I don't beleive it was misplaced. He seemed genuinely concerned for Magnus but also had a chance at airing his grievances against psykers which is understandable based on his childhood.

I think if the Emperor was smart the council should have been a case by case basis where each legion or Primarch gave private testimony as to their thoughts on psykers and the librarius and then possibly made a structural change tailored to suit the needs of each legion. A one size fits all approach is stupid because fundamentally some legions are just going to have different cultures and approaches to things that any sort of blanket judgement is going to cause friction and resentment among those who dont get their way. I'd also point out that since the Imperium is supposed to be founded on logic why is it that the anecodotes and subjective judgements of non-psykers are given credence in the form of arguments rather than actual substantive proof and evidence. In a real court all of this would be regarded as conjecture, hearsay, and speculation. The argument that one group of psykers being bad will lead to another group of psykers being bad is like saying cars should be banned because there are bad drivers and thus its too dangerous for anyone to have a car because I like to walk and bike and everyone else should be made to do what I like and what I dont like should be banned.

The reason why all the Primarchs couldn't make it is because of the pressures of the Great Crusade. The Khan for instance, wanted to go but had to chase Ork remnants from Ullanor. Nearly every legion sent a representative though, Targutai Yesugei was the White Scar's representative.

He is an essence, the poster child of what happens when you lay your path down with the best of intentions, but don’t bother to verify where the information you are getting comes from. Has several spiritual aspects that pop up through various stages of the heresy say loudly, and clearly that this is my fault. When the Wolves assaulted Prospero, Tzeetech or an avatar of Tzeetech, Came to him as he sat in his pyramid, and literally told him that he and his legion were damned because of the pearl of knowledge that he himself gave to Magus to save his sons from the effects of the Flesh Change and when payment came due all the work that Magnus did sacrificing his eye lead to nothing the flesh change returned a one nearly devoured his legion, causing Ahriman to enact his own deal with chaos and instituted his Rubic
