I just gotta say how much I appreciate your nuance and fair criticisms. You rightfully cite both the positives and negatives of a movie, and consider them both when judging the movie as a whole. So many other "reviewers" just hang on to the negatives and completely ignore any positives. Then they act like it's the worst movie ever. It's aggravating how those styles of videos always generate a bunch of clicks. You've become my go-to critic when I'm curious about a movie.

Your concern about the threats that could stem from the first Joker are well founded. However, it's not the movie, which is quite benign. But rather the way the media desperately tried to spin it into something that could inspire psychopaths. It was a sick and perverted way they were trying to get something going there.
@rexcatston8412

I mean in all fairness, this is literally what they do every single time in all aspects of media, so it really shouldn't be surprising that they'd do it again. 'White people terrible, straight man evil, non-politically correct sentiment dangerous, anti-establishment is racism' is the medias collective motto. The media isn't a place for objectivity or entertainment value, its a vessel for unhinged leftists to vent their hatred for anything that skews from their razor narrow opinion on reality

I agree that people shouldnt make out that Joker might inspire psychos. End of the day, psychos are psychos. Films don’t make them that way. Plus, if we look at movies that way, we’ll never be able to have a good anti-hero again. However, it wasn’t that long before Joker was released that some a-hole did actual dress as the Joker and kill a load of people in Aurora Colorado. I can see why some people might take umbrage with a movie being made in which the Joker kills people and is held up by many to be the hero.
@Malt454
@Malt454 Ай бұрын
The first movie was a criticism of a society that could create the Joker, and the sequel is a criticism of a society that could make him a celebrity, which includes our society. The idea goes back at least as far as the Joker appearing on the Letterman show in The Dark Knight Returns. If the movie disappoints the Joker fan club, it's mainly because it questions whether the Joker should have a fan club to begin with. Some people just won't understand the movie and hate it, others will understand the movie and just hate what it says - the Joker's the protagonist, but he's not a hero. So it goes.

It's a redemption arc for a character who suffers greatly from living in a crap-sack world and whose character arc in the first movie was gaining a sense of power and agency from growing out of being merely a victim into being a victimizer. The story is a tragedy and does not have a triumphal ending. A lot of critics seem to accuse the movie of something it does not do. Folie a Deux respects the hell out of the character and setting that the first movie established. The character is realistic and the world is grim and gritty. Joker is about a victim growing to become a villain, angry at a world that never cared about him. Folie a Deux is about that character growing from a villain into a non-villain, and learning to regret the harm he caused by lashing out in the first movie. I guess that's what some fans don't like about it, they didn't want to see a story about one of their favorite villains learning to regret having hurt people and wanting to not be that villainous person anymore. They didn't want to see a redemption arc for this character.

A good movie. In a difficult spot, following up the gritty realism, descent into madness, finally triumphing over your victimizers by becoming a victimizer yourself, villian-protagonist story that was the first film. Making it a musical was a good idea, I think, but a difficult one. Thematically, it's all about bouncing back and forth between hopeless and gritty realism in a crap-sack world, and fantasies of power and happiness and agency and revenge and love. The music is used in the movie like the clown makeup is, to generate fantasies of something more appealing than the depression and abuse that is almost all the real world contains. There are a few good people in this movie, but they are all ultimately weak and impotent in the face of the gritty reality of this bleak world. This movie is a tragedy, and it hurts to watch, but it respects the vision of the first movie very well I think. Juxtaposing the relief and excitement of the fantasy of power and agency against the grim reality of a dour world made mostly of victimizers and victims, and the few people trying to help are mostly powerless to do so.

I loved the film, i think the low critic scores are for a similar reason as the relatively low Joker 1 critic scores, a lot of critics just dont like that Todd Phillips is going for. And for the low audience score, i think its about expectations, they expected a movie about the Arthur finally being the Joker and being a badass or something for a full movie. And thats exactly what the movie is criticizing, the idolization of the Joker. Also it being a musical, i would bet most people that went this opening weekend didnt know it was a musical. Or thought that maybe there would be a couple of songs and thats it. And its unfortunate that a lot of people despise musicals. I went it expecting a musical and i had a fantastic time.

It’s a masterpiece! & I don’t think people are deep enough to truly appreciate it. Arthur fleck is Batman’s half brother & Batman’s dad ironically created the inevitable real joker. Arthur never experienced love , not from his mom or anyone, that sadness that loneliness and utter despair is the entire point. Arthur is a good person a victim , someone we all had empty for in part 1 and throughout. The Folie a deux is French for two crazy people delusional together . He’s delusional believing she truly loves him for who he is as Arthur Fleck, and she’s delusional for loving the joker side of him even tho that’s not really him because he’s a good guy and not even the real joker after all. The midget even said you were always good to me. It was Arthur’s redemption, but when he went searching for Harley the tragedy is she doesn’t love who he really is and Arthur died alone never expecting love. Arthur doesn’t make the direct connection that maybe he could get love if he continues the joker persona and is never presented that opportunity, maybe he would have kept being the joker if it meant he could be loved by Harley, we will never know. When he sees Harley with make up is faded away as Arthur fleck this weak man who came out at closing statement is not attractive to Harley, that’s why she left him alone in the courtroom as she herself realizes in the end that it was all a fantasy & he isn’t the joker. In the end he is the origin story & inspiration of the real joker , the guy who kills him in the end and cuts smile on his face is the Joker who battles Batman not Arthur fleck.

Fascinating to see how others are affected this way. When I was that young I was often scared by TV and movies because I knew adults made them, so there must be something true about what i was seeing. At that age, knowing someone is an actor doesn't help---it just all seems 'real'. The TV series THE OUTER LIMITS had lots of things like this for me

Wasn't excited for this film before as I expected more of a rehash of the first film with a musical twist (Not good because I generally don't like musicals). This review though has changed my mind as I am pleasantly surprised that a blockbuster sequel has made some very bold choices and tried to do something daring, that is very exciting.

Mixed opinions on this. Phoenix gave another great performance and the storyline had some interesting points. On the downside, it was pretty depressing too. As far as above the line Oscars go, I was disappointed with Lady Gaga and thought she was mainly a singer in this movie and should not be nominated. I did think Phoenix deserves another nomination for this.

This was a beautiful film that has great moments and expertly uses the IMAX screen but the music got in the way of this film. So, I didn't like the film but I didn't dislike it either. This film is 50/50 music and dialogue. Now most of the songs fit in where dialogue would have been used, but if you don't like musicals you will not like this film. The movie severely underutilized Harley. This film focuses primarily on Arthur Fleck and not the Joker. I hated the ending for a Joker film. 5.75/10.

I liked the movie. It’s thematically a good spin to the original as it challenges the audience’s tendency to root for villains or even criminals in real life. Murderers like Manson or Dahmer had numerous fans that wrote to him, worshipped and even wanted to have babies with him. Maybe because they relate to their hardships they’ve endured, or because they project on these criminals a desire for rebellion, justice or vengeance. But at the end of the day though, Arthur Fleck admits that there’s no Joker, there’s no grandiosity or higher plan to his crimes; he’s just a sad, mentally unstable man. And Harley and the rest turn on him because otherwise they’d have to admit they’re not special, they’re just as sad and crazy as he is. Ironically, the rejection that real life audiences have had for the movie confirms the film’s thesis. People were expecting to see an over-the-top Joker like Nicholson’s, or mysterious and complex as Heath Ledger’s, who also pointed out society’s hypocrisies. Instead, they got the anti-climactic reality of what someone like the Joker would be like: a mere man with a troubled past and a deeply troubled mind, with no grandiosity to him except what the fans have given him.

Being difficult to work with is one thing. But what Phoenix just did was quit a movie with no explanation, as far as we know, just before it was to start shooting, a movie that got greenlit with the premise of him starring in it, and putting in danger or maybe ruining the entire project. I don't see how the Academy would decide to reward him with a nomination right now.

I agree, it's good! Not as good as the first one, but very thematically poignant. Respected the hell out of the character and setting established in the first movie and found a way to do a follow up character study that made sense. It always hurts to watch a tragedy though, making this a difficult movie to recommend to people who only want lighter or uplifting fare. Definitely not a popcorny superhero flick.

I'm usually on the same page with you on reviews, so I came to see your opinion right after seeing the movie... This time, I can't seem to disagree more... I don't know what it is, but I just couldn't find the way to like this movie. Maybe because the first one was so great, maybe because I got lost in the musical numbers to a point of shrugging when another one started, maybe because the ending felt so disappointing to me in terms of the comic book character. I could see the points you made about the good parts, but the whole experience to me was "not a fan" at best... As always, thank you for the great work, and I hope my words are taken as I meant them, just a disagreement, not a rant on your thoughts of the piece.

Thanks for the great review! I did feel very similarly and yes people who want to eat the same kind of food they got in Joker will not be pleasantly surprised. I think one can imagine a movie where Phillips gives them what they want Spoiler Aleet. . Ex. Let’s have the court room bomb explosion really early in the film and have Joker rise helped by Harley. Perhaps her involvement basically giving the strength he needs to accept that role. Or perhaps another scenario where Joker had to rises in Arkham and building an empire from within. Of course none of this happened. The reasons for it only Phillips and the writers know. Perhaps for the simple fact that it’s what seems like a natural perhaps predictable outline. I think a lot of people will not get a lot out of this because the audience is expecting something else and I know it sounds a bit pretentious, but most comic book audience goers aren’t looking for something artistic. That is the dilema I think great directors and writers face. Sacrificing a vision for the sake of appeasing the general audience expecting something more of the same. It isn’t the first one. That was perfect. It still pulled you (if you are open) to a place that is deep and a bottled up potential that only released toward the end.

Took my wife to see movie tonight. I was so disappointed and thought it was a terrible movie. I have been a big movie fan and lover of comic book characters for over 55 years. They totally dropped the ball and missed an opportunity for this film. It wasn't fun and story was stuck in neutral. I worked with people who have mental health issues it does not treat that subject with dignity. If you want to make a romp of a fictional character thats fun have at it. But to have the film stuck all film in prison/hospital setting with no fun is not entertaining. I feel i wasted 3 hours of my time that i cant get back. I asked someone who had seen the movie what he thought ? He said it was a Parody ? We can handle tough content but we also want to be entertained.

i said this for the first Joker movie and i will say it again: there was absolutely no need to use the DC/Batman property for these movies,it could have and should have been its own IP/Franchise. i will always feel that they only used the Joker IP to reel in an audience. Do keep in mind,i am 100% someone whos all about originality and creativity. I commend everyone involved with these movies for trying something... unique and different. at the end of the day though,personally,i just dont enjoy this execution. nothing about this screams JOKER to me. the first movie,i felt nothing about Joker or Batman or anything of that franchise. it was just a great psychological drama thriller,about a man whos mentally unwell and is going thru a rollercoaster of events in life,and a lot of us can relate to that when life is kicking our butts. Why did it need to have the name "Joker" attached to it? it couldve been titled "Laugh at My Pain" or something like that,lol.

i left the theater, feeling totally defeated, so i guess the movie did its job. im taking a shot of addressing the problems, ive had with it, since this feeling of utter defeat is heavily boosted, by the backlash, it received. to address it, ill dive into SPOILERS!!!!! this film was frustrating, its definitely flawed and the way the musical aspects are woven into the narrative, makes said narrative stops dead in its tracks, every time the musical fantasy becomes more elaborate- and by design, it will be jarring, theres a contrast, especially in the last act, that reinforces said effect. with all that out of the way, i will say, that this movie emotionally affected me, far more, than the first one ever did and i was on board, with that one, empathizing with arthur, every step of the way. this movie deconstructs most of the first film, in some very frustrating ways- my main issues were, as follows 1. if youre going the route of integrating musical elements and portraying it as an elaborate fantasy, i think its a missed opportunity, to write original music, for your characters, especially when your composer previously won an oscar. i got why they chose to go with old fashioned american songbook tunes and imo it works half of the time, but theres definitely some instances, of the song not furthering the narrative, or stopping it dead in its tracks. they couldve cut about 4 songs out of the movie and it wouldve benefited the flow. 2. while on the subject of cut material, its clear from the trailers alone, that portions of the film were cut, especially regarding lee- gaga does good, with what shes given, but i cant help but feel, that she was originally a more rounded character (a pun on her clearly having a baby bump, in one of the cut scenes), but that she got sidelined, because this is ultimately arthurs story and they didnt want to lose sight of that fact. 3. it being arthurs story is an exact mirror image of the first films narrative- where youre led to believe, that the first ends with arthur transforming into the joker, this film is about his letting go, of this construct, letting go of the fantasy. you can argue the point, since a good bit of the first one was only playing out in his head, that it should have been more of a struggle, for him, to let go, of his persona. 4. the way hes quite literally forced, to let go of the joker persona, is frankly tasteless. the heavily implied rape from the guards seemed like an overreaction, to what was merely an unspecified name drop, in the courtroom- what seems to break him, is that they kill his only friend and this, in combination with garys testimony, finally makes him realize, the kind of impact hes had. while i appreciated, that it showed arthur still had some empathy left, (despite the state psychiatrist claiming, one of his psychological issues, being a lack of such), it felt like a quick, brutal solution, that i feel couldve been achieved more organically, in court. 5. while on the court topic, i will say that harvey dent seemed like a caricature, of a smug lawyer- its yet another missed opportunity, to have dent be the one, to make the case against arthurs dual identity, when harvey dent traditionally has his own struggles, with said diagnosis, arguably to a much heavier degree. one can make the case, that after this case and him being minimally disfigured, by the bomb going off, said events may influence his stance, on duality, further down the road, also furthering the theme of arthurs influence, on people. as it stands, hes just this smug guy, who seems to think the courtroom is his audition, for a modelling gig. 6. addendum to the courtroom scenes- i realize, im probably very much in the minority, but i actually appreciated, that some of the events of the first movie were clarified. i never was a fan of the read, that the whole first movie might have been in his head, a theory, heavily argued for, by a majority, as being the joke, that arthur replies to, with you wouldnt get it. getting that isnt clever, it was always dumb, because it not only destroys any purpose for a narrative, it also goes against the idea, of empathizing with arthur, which was my big takeaway, of both movies. i will also say, that for the attentive viewer, theres quite a few examples, when it can be seen, that arthur is imagining things, which purposefully have been edited- one example of that, comes in the very beginning of the movie, during the bus scene, with the kid. when the camera pans back, after the argument with the kids mother, the kid isnt there anymore. i also never felt, that sophie and her kid surviving, was left ambigious, in the context of what weve come to know, about arthur. 7. last, but definitely not least, ill address the elephant in the room- the ending. it baffles me, how many people tried to tie this in, with heath ledgers joker, despite neither timelines, nor events, nor actors ages and appearances, line up with the nolan trilogy. while on the subject of the nolan trilogy, it had a pretty similar ending, to this one and i for one, found it way harder, to buy into the idea, of john robin blake taking up the bat-mantle, when comparing it, to the joker, as being this shadow, that will always be there, as an influence. it does make more sense to me, especially because the symbol of batman, is too specific to bruce, in my mind. while on the topic of bruce, i found it very interesting, that pretty much everyone from part 1, that survived, was brought back, except him. in retrospect, it does make the wayne family plot point of the first feel kind of tacked on, but i feel, it was done on purpose, to separate it further, from the source material. its not hard to understand, why many fans of comic book movies will feel, like theyre being pranked, but its a tragic prank, as written by arthur fleck. arthur fleck who? this point wouldve gone over better, if they didnt make harley closer to her source material, than expected, only to completely flip the dynamic, that joker and harley have, in said source material. everything gets turned on its head. so yes, its kind of a mess, on purpose and the decisions are often baffling, but for me at least, there was still genuine emotional investment and i knew, that this numbness, after leaving the theatre, was the point, not a clever, (like some have interpreted the ending of the first one), but a deeply emotionally resonant one. warts and all, this has genuinely touched me deeply, more than any film ive seen in the theatres, since the last one. arguing whats the point, is missing and proving said point- collectively we didnt care about arthur, we wanted to see joker. we wanted escapism and got something uncomfortably real and the contrast, in the fantastical musical numbers, made it land even heavier and ive felt anxious, every time the flick came to a grinding halt, when musical sequences faded to black and we got thrown back, into reality. as an audience weve been collectively taught, to expect certain things, from a franchise movie and this film, if nothing else, exists, to defy these expectations and i for one, cant help, but respect it, for that, while still understanding perfectly, why this wont go over well, for a lot of people. it has made me think and feel a lot, since i came out of the cinema- about the last 20 years and how these franchises have turned into the flogging of a dead horse, yet somehow, a flick like deadpool and wolverine taking up the mantle, of biggest R rated film off of joker, feels like a statement, about where we are, both artistically and collectively- easy sarcasm, cameos and even characters being reduced to memes- you contrast this with the honest sentiment, of an old timey song, sung slightly off key, but genuinely vulnerable, naked, stripped, like arthur was, of any pretense. and while i wont argue against todd phillips very own pretensions, the character of arthur fleck will stay with me and cast a shadow.
