Ha! I was out on a mushroom foraging adventure with Kevin last Saturday and afterwards he said he was going to meet up with a buddy to do a catch and cook bull frog episode! So fun to see it was with you.

Just fly-fished for bullfrogs a couple of months ago when we were camping and the fishing on the river was slow. There were several open ponds with lily pads and tons of bullfrogs near our camp, so I used an insect popper and a heavier leader, which worked extremely well. Super fun and delicious! As always, thanks for sharing the great content and if you have a chance, it's worth trying for frogs with a fly rod. It's very productive and a blast!

Northern thais love their frog. I was in chiang mai when the rains started. On the roads, everyone was out on scooters looking for frogs. They are everywhere. Had no idea about it but put it together as we were driving to a friends house in lampang. Needless to say, we caught dinner that night with the villagers. Such a great experience.

Having grown up frog gigging in Georgia, it is cool to see others enjoying this form of outdoor foraging. It sucks that your area is dealing with this species as invasive but its great that folks are finding a constructive way to handle them. Love the recipe!

I agree, frog is surprisingly really tender and has the texture of chicken, but also comes with that fishy, almost a game-like taste. Kind of hard to describe, but I think 'fishy chicken' is a pretty good summary.

Awesome that you did something on frog legs. My first encounter with frog legs was a restaurant in Pitsburgh/Antioch and it was on the waterfront. Breaded like fried chicken, and so delicious. I think I was around 10, so back in the early 70's. It was a specialty of this restuarsnt. Thanks for the memory Taku, and yes love the invasive species thing.

I know a guy. Older gentleman. Spear fisherman. Was having health issues. After a lot of searching turns out he had mercury poisoning because his diet was about 90% fish. Yellowtail. Halibut. White seabass. Changed it up and no more heath issues. Everything in moderation.

Took me back to my teens in Orlando. We would walk the river once a month and come back with a burlap sack, a croaker sack, full of bull frogs. The were so big we would batter and deep fry the whole frog. To up your catch put a small square of red cloth on the gig and then move in slowly to the frog. He will watch the red and then when you're about 6" away let him have it. Too bad they were cold and not singing for you. They can raise a racket! Nice cook!

Did anyone catch the cap log design on Dr cap? It's more than fishing. These guys are great as they have a special bond to work well with one another. I fish for bullfrogs here in the valley. We have lots of levees in the farm land and if there's frogs, you can fish them. With a long heavy duty pole, I tied a piece of cut bluegill or can even use a rubber grub lure. No hook is needed and the reason why I'm using cut gill is for the weight to tie at the end of my line. I would toss it out on top of them lily pads n work it like a frog lure, dashing on top. Once n a while, a bass would explode on it but if there's bullfrog around, you can see them jumping in for the inspection. You can also just stand on top of the levee n just drop it straight down and make a splash close to shore. You can hear these frogs would hop on it and will eat your bait. You can feel them chomping on it. All this is done without visual seeing the frog. Then you spin the line in, lower your rod tip n lift them up. You see, a frog will value their legs the most. Break it n they will starve and die. So they will hold onto the bait n will not let go for fear of dropping and breaking their legs. I usually go during the rain season as they come out n be more active for the mating season. It's a fun way to catch them with a rod n reel. If you see a levee and small channel with green weeds down by the water, good chances they have bullfrogs.
