Democracynow.org - Voters go to the polls in Guatemala on Sunday to elect a new president after a popular uprising led to President Otto Pérez Molina’s resignation and jailing. We speak with journalist and historian David Talbot, author of "The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government," about the role Allen Dulles and his brother, then-Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, played in the CIA’s 1954 coup in the country, the ramifications of which are still being felt. "The CIA and Allen Dulles told Eisenhower after the Guatemala coup, 'Oh, it was a clean coup. You know, hardly anyone died,'" Talbot said. "But the fact is, tens of thousands of people died in the killing fields of Guatemala as a result of that coup, and that violence continues today."

I have this book, read it, and it’s an engrossing read. Dulles was certainly a POWERFUL figure in early 20th century world history. The title of the book is not incorrect.

@@bryangould1666 You spout unfiltered BS. Neither Dulles nor Richard Bissell were fired, they voluntarily resigned. According to the book _Robert Kennedy, In His Own Words_ , Bobby said of Dulles: ”He dealt with his leaving with a great deal of dignity and never attempted to shift the blame. The President was very fond of him, as was I.” When Dulles left the CIA, John Kennedy awarded him the National Security Medal, and described him as “a friend,” while praising him highly for “devoted public service.” And remember, it was RFK himself who recommended to LBJ that Dulles serve on the WC.

United Fruit-supported by Dulles-stole land from Guatemala, which it "payed" 16 cents / acre which it did not use. This land was to be returned to the Guatemalan people, which is when the CIA intervened. This is, I believe, detailed in Ronald Wright's "Time Among the Maya"...
