Hey, ive always been a huge fan of your head and footwork, I would really like to get this but I just can't afford a 100$ (or 90 with the discount) training video. If there's any way you could entertain like a significant discount, that would be cool. Thanks for your videos.

Something I wanna add for those that maybe experiencing what I did. Most gyms teach head movement as just slips and rolls like: 1,2,slip, 3 or roll, 4, slip 3, 2. The thing is, no fighter does these staged combo scenarios in sparring or a fight and mostly lean back. Even Jeff is showing here a lot of his initial reactions is to move his head back, then slip/roll forward under a 2nd or 3rd strike. Your opponent has a large array of ways he can hit your head, so trying to figure out the incoming strike, then do the proper counter immediately in the most effective way possible will never work. All head movement starts with getting away from the strike, so when you start practicing head movement, start by just practicing leaning back away from the strike. Once you can do that, then add the slips and rolls. I had terrible head movement trying to read and do the perfect dodge for each attack, and I was getting hit dead in the face every time. Leaning back and learning distance made everything click for me, and I hope anyone reading this it will help you too.
@MyCommentsRMaturelol2 жыл бұрын
I like that. I see the benefit of getting close to counter with a slip but distance is my best friend given my pot addled reflexes
@MMAShredded2 жыл бұрын
Good analysis! Cheers!
@cjayx2 жыл бұрын
@@MyCommentsRMaturelol dude same. The big benefit of leaning back to me is it's less brain power. Why bother guessing what attack is coming when moving my head back defends 80% of all attacks.
@MyCommentsRMaturelol2 жыл бұрын
@@cjayx yuuuup. Slips (for me)are really just for countering an attack I baited, or setting up a kick. I dont think its smart to ever let your opponent into striking range without narrowing down what they can throw. I'd rather just run tf away, reset, and lead. Going first is such a big advantage, and running away means you basically always go first. Plus footwork is the most transferable to other sports, and the most anime, which is a big plus lol.

Jeff, great point on the slipping is faster than bringing your hand back for blocking counters!!! I learned it the hard way when I was training holding zone 2 in Muay Thai. I couldn't retract my hands fast enough after throwing and I was eating a lot of punches to the face. Not to mention my arm was f**king tired after holding them up for an hour wearing 20oz gloves.

@InfamousAustinT02 жыл бұрын
I think that's why Adesanya does so well in MMA compared to other kickboxers. A lot of guys come from kickboxing to MMA and don't do the greatest. A lot of kickboxers come to MMA and their defense is to put their guard up and eventually something slips through and they get finished. In MMA you have smaller gloves and putting your guard up isn't as effective as in boxing or kickboxing with the bigger gloves. When you watch Adesanya's kickboxing matches his defenses was never mostly about keeping the guard up. Instead he mostly used his footwork and head movement. I think that set him up to transition well into MMA

There are tons of nice things that could be said complimenting the diligence that you've obviously exercised to reach this point of skill...but honestly, ive probably already said it commenting on a previous video or somebody else has identified the same thing. So beyond helping those unaware of the level of skill that can be attained with concerted effort and proper approach to training, much more and I would enter a realm of nut-huggery that is essentially useless (though comfortingly familiar) and destract from what i think is a better observation for us, your adoring public. For anybody who tries to pay attention to the shape and procession of thoughts and ideas toward a goal; take note of whats happening here. There are tons of talented, capable, hardworking human beings out there in the world that we can all appreciate the excellence of, its part of our nature in a sublime, essential way. Observing it is kind of automatic. Reflexive. Sometimes we are extraordinarily fortunate enough to be able to convey in any significant proportion the content of knowledge and/or perspective that might be shared with our fellows to be attempted in future efforts. Thats a mega cool thing that humans do that we all love and find it hard not to appreciate. rarely though, does the experience itself convey itself in any meaningful way into the future. What jeff is doing here, is actually contributing to a greater collective the aims, means, and ways to chase down our native qualities and wrangle them into being. not just in specific techniques to focus in on and hone, but fundamental associations to first principles. As time moves along, the relative rarity of thoughtful individuals capable of producing such things becomes more and more apparent. In this capacity, however, he is not singularly unique. By nature of real paradox, his success parlays DIRECTLY to the capability and expression of those same things in yall, us, and you - whoever is reading this. I think i've probably gone on a little long here. Just appreciate the things that are harder to see, and the efforts made towards the things you love. i think these shrooms are kicking in. thanks jeff. -Os-

Question: while watching you I see you a lot with the cloth shin guards, and when you are kicking people in the legs you hit with your foot often and you even do it in hard sparring it appears. How exactly are you able to do that without injuring your foot? I recently got identical shin guards (Cloth ones) for the purpose of intentionally having less padding but several times I’ve noticed I’ve had to turn down the intensity cause when I’m kicking and I get an elbow dropped or a kick checked by someone’s knee right on my ankle it hurts alot more, but not in a good way.. more so I’m gonna injure myself way. Are you someone conditioning your foot and ankle along with your shin? Or how are you not injuring yourself?

I was training karate and some muay thai both of which are not famous for head movement defence. And when I faced an opponent in k-1 bout he really exposed it and was effectively evading my punches with slick head moves. I was trying to practice it myself but I still can’t utilise it properly, I still lack the understanding what exactly making it effective. My fundamental question is how it can be quicker than a punch? Is it about the reaction time? Prediction of your opponent move? Exploiting the patterns? Provoking the opponent?

I just commented on this post with my experience since it is similar to yours, but to start with head movement begin with just leaning back. It dodges 80% of strikes effectively and you can build from there. So next time sparring just lean back, and as you dodge punches in this simple way, you'll get it.

Good head movement is predictive rather than reactive. You should still practice dodging all punches with slips, ducks, and rolls. But the goal ultimately is to understand what strikes your opponent can throw from the position your in, what they’re countering, what you’re throwing, etc. you also want to get really good at controlling what your opponent throws with something often referred to as defensive traffic. Short boxing has a really good video on it, also look into Barry Robinson he has a ton of material on it except he refers to it as air control or sometimes just “controls”

It's about timing, but not reaction time. During each time, you're susceptible to only a handful of attacks, so you can reliably predict which types of head movement techniques to use during certain times. For example, if a guy throws a right hand and you can see that he's still coming forward, the majority of the time, he's gonna come with a left hook. So if you ducked the right hand for example, you wouldn't pull back up to your stance, you'd get caught by the hook. You'd have to roll and exit out with footwork or a reactive takedown if it's MMA. The reason why jabs are so good is because they're ambiguous for the defender; you don't know if a right hand is following, a left hook, uppercut, whatever. There are many tricks like leaning your head over past your hip line so that you present a target for your opponent to jab, and then you can counter with a preset sequence, but to be honest, that's a lot of mental energy in a fight unless you're highly experienced. As a beginner I'm not a big fan of head movement because I'm long anyway so I'm the one trying to keep the distance. Head movement is an effective tool to get inside as well.

You can't be quicker than a punch you bait/provoke the punch you want to defend and hopefully counter
