A bumper plate is a simple tool with which to get an athlete to feel the proper body position needed for a handstand, says CrossFit Level 1 Seminar Staff member Camille Leblanc-Bazinet.
With a bumper plate held overhead, the athlete will learn to squeeze his butt and bring down the rib cage with the abs, eliminating the excessive lower-back arch often seen in inverted athletes.
"I really like this drill just for that, just to understand how to ... position their body and which muscles should be working," Leblanc-Bazinet says as her husband, fellow Level 1 Seminar Staff member Dave Lipson, demonstrates at the CrossFit Inc. gym in Scotts Valley, Calif.
Next, she has Lipson do a half wall walk and hold the body at a 45-degree angle to the floor. In this position, the athlete learns how to press into the floor, creating an active position characterized by straight elbows and midline stability.
Afterward, it's time to try wall-facing handstands with only the toes touching the wall. Eventually, Leblanc-Bazinet will ask the athlete to remove his toes from the wall to find balance in the strong support position.
"That way you really make your athletes work with their brain," Leblanc-Bazinet says.

All good and well demonstraing the correct positioning, but what about if peoples shoulders are mobile enough and they have to give up there back which breaks form, what are some things to help with that?
@OscarSchneegans

www.mobilitywod.com/ Improve mobility, THEN do the movement. If your lack of mobility prevents you from performing the movement correctly, don't do it. Incorrect movement leads to injury.

I think it's very important to also teach how to bail from a handstand attempt gone south. You can easily break your wrist by going over or hurt your back or your head if you don't know how to land

You also forgot to tell us about our finger positions during the stand. That part always confuses me. I'm not sure whether I should collapse my hand to one unit or extend my fingers as much as possible. Especially with the thumb!!
@Chumongocho
@Chumongocho 10 жыл бұрын
your hand should be open but relaxed, like you were waving to someone. and with this spread of the fingers you should attempt to grab the ground (where your first knuckles are there will be an arch and your palm + tips of fingers will dig into the ground)

I mean the way my friends tell me is to crunch your lower back and I did that and it helped me but some ppl just go into a straight line so it depends on which kind of technique you like so either perfectly straight body or a little straight( just crunch your lower back with your ass)

OK you totally forgot to mention that his head should be facing his hands. It's not done the way he did it at the end, it's done the way she did it in the beginning. I struggled a lot with the head position thing. Doing it incorrectly may injure your neck
