The Kex Engine is like a gift from God, it's so brilliant when you think about it because it can be used to remaster virtually any game out there that's been reverse-engineered or has available source code. Not a remake... a remaster. Why are people always getting the two terms mixed up?
@Okusar4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you define it, I suppose. In this case Nightdive Studios had to essentially recreate much of the game, so in that sense it is a "remake." One could also make the argument for Doom 64 itself being a remake of sorts of the DOS games, which would make this version a remaster of a remake. But generally, yeah - if it's just an enhanced update of the original, then it's a remaster. Remakes tend to be more of a reinterpretation, which is exactly the opposite of what Nightdive were trying to achieve.

It's a huge shame that literally none of the re-releases of Doom/Doom II/Final Doom include the improvements made to PS1 Doom. PS1 is a stepping stone to Doom 64. It has new lighting effects. It has a completely revamped soundscape, including room-based reverb, new weapon/enemy sounds, and a new soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges. I'm not saying they shouldn't include the original sounds and music and stuff for people that prefer them. But having the enhanced PS1 versions as an option would be invaluable. Let people toggle them. Don't let them fade into obscurity. Similarly, if Quake 1 ever gets re-released, and it really should, I'd like to see Aubrey Hodge's Quake 64 OST included. If Quake II ever gets re-released, I'd like to see Quake 2 N64's campaign included (Quake II N64 was essentially a new+remixed mission pack, with an Aubrey Hodges soundtrack.)

As always, John and Digital Foundry always put up quality content that’s great to listen to. John is one of the best at doing professional interviews, and always comes prepared. Whenever Richard comes through in certain videos, it’s crazy to think he was writing reviews back in the late 80s for gaming publications, and he’s still as passionate about it now as he was then. As for Doom 64, even though I never had an N64, some of my best friends did, and this game, despite having a good PC, a Saturn, and PS-One, Doom 64 always impressed me. The sprites held up incredibly well, and they have me wondering if only a handful of them are pre-rendered, given that the original 1993 Doom relied on claymation for almost all of the enemies. The Baron of Hell in Doom 64 looks very similar to the original Doom claymation model, but it’s rendered in a higher resolution, with sprite filtering. The N64 Baron of Hell looks like it also has all of the animation that was missing from the other early Doom 1-2 console ports, some of which only had his front facing sprite animations. The way each sprite integrates well with the 3D environment, from the lighting, to the textures, makes Doom 64 one of my favorite Doom games ever made. Based on the official Doom titles, for me, it’s Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, then Doom 3.

Wow, I had no idea just how advanced the Doom 64 engine is compared to the first two games. It really is the true Doom 3! Always a treat to hear from the developers, they've got a real passion for old shooters it seems like. Might just have to check out the Turok PC ports now.

I've been playing Doom 64, it's fantastic, and the remaster looks awaesome. I had it on N64 and always found the graphics so dark and muddy. The remaster is so much brighter and cleaner, the sprites look way better, really brings the game to life. Best version of the game for sure.

Iirc Nindendo was kinda ok with games like Doom at that point IF you actively avoided marketing your game to kids. Games like the SNES Mortal Kombat, which featured probably the most notorious Nintendo cencorship, really went after kiddies, which is when Nintendo stepped in.

Such a labour of love from those teams I do hope they were well rewarded for their efforts, the love they poured into the conversion is obvious, and coming from an old skool gamer that grew up on DOOM, Hexen and Quake this is one of my favourite versions of DOOM and the fact it's portable on Switch, runs great and feels like the ultimate version of classic DOOM is the absolute cherry on the cake. 10/10 from me, never feels old jumping on this for a blast.

@@Pokemanic33 thank you for your reply but I have the PS4 version so unless the devs patch this me and every other console user needs to waste like a full minute every time to play and not because of loading but because of logo's, I mean if a game is loading than it's loading but forcing us to wait so long every time just for company logo's is just ridiculous.

I'm so happy they implemented touchpad usage for the PS4, I honestly think it's such an underused feature and it's a no brainer to use it for maps/inventory management. Now that the switch has become so popular and touch controls are implemented often, I'm hoping to see more touchpad integration in PS4 ports as well.

I always knew something was different about the way N64 rendered textures, but I had no idea what or how to even google it. I just noticed smoothing appeared like a smear from the top-right to the bottom-left and every console or pc capable of texture filtering I've played on since hasn't had that same look. Thanks for putting a name to it.
@1chiTheKiller4 жыл бұрын
It was pretty cool hearing directly from the devs on this one. I appreciate their dedication to ensuring the new conversion looked as accurate to the original N64 version as they could possibly get. BUT this new version DOES have a few issues. Buttons can't be remapped particularly well. If you remap a button, the original button remains there, and even if you change that same button to a new mapping, it remains on the original mapped function. For instance, I've always played my PC games where next weapon is scroll down, and previous weapon is scroll up. On this game they're backwards from that, however when I try to remap them, even though the menu says scroll up is now for previous weapon, the function for scroll up remains on next weapon as well, and as far as I know, there's no way to clear a mapped function. I appreciate having multiple mappings for a single function, but you should be able to easily clear it. I had to go into an ini file and adjust it that way. Hopefully they'll fix this in a patch. Minor issue, but still a big irritation.

Nightdive already did other N64 games. Turok 1,2, Forsaken among others. I wish they would remaster Turok 3 too. Turok 3 and Turok Rage Wars is still 100% N64 exclusive. Their remasters is always very good. I bought all of them.
