Ittai-meaning “horse and rider as one”. A lot of words that define one thing: driving experience! Mazda defines the all-new CX-5 has "an SUV all customers will enjoy,"! If you like driving, this is the SUV that you need to get! The all new Mazda CX-5 has a lot to offer!
Is the 2017 CX-5 all-new? Short answer: Yes, but it has a lot of similarity with the older model! Inside you will find a 187-hp 2.5-liter inline-four SKYACTIV-G with a six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic is standard, and i-ACTIV all-wheel drive is optional. You have an easy-to-use infotainment that includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and a lot of optional safety techs like adaptive cruise, automated emergency braking, and more! But the big question, when can we test the 2017 Mazda Cx-5 Diesel? Only time will tell!
Vehicle Highlights:
- Standard full-LED headlights
- Greater door-pocket storage space
- Available power liftgate, rear HVAC vents, rear heated outboard seats and dual 2.1-amp rear-seat USB charging ports for tablets
- Two-stage reclining rear seats
- Windshield-projected Active Driving Display
- Windshield wiper de-icer
- Rear doors that open at 80-degrees, a 6-degree improvement, allowing for easier child-seat loading and unloading
- More ergonomic door handles for easier, quicker use
- Full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control
- Available 10-speaker BOSE® Premium audio system (one additional speaker; improved performance)
- Standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat
- Improved throttle response
- New algorithm for the i-ACTIV AWD

It's funny seeing all these comments I Owen a 2017 CX5 AWD and would highly recommend it ... I live in BC and have took this off road numerous times recently I took it over 4 dry river beds with steep inclines in and out of them and it performed very well also up a Gravel Hill with 25% incline and did amazing ... you got to know what your vehicle can do and what you can get out of it ... and remember it's an AWD System it not 4wd or 4x4 lock

At 7:27 we can hear and see the brake engage on the passenger side rear wheel that is off the ground thus sending more power to the wheel that is on the ground, which has a little less grip than the braked wheel lifted off the ground. That is with TCS off.

I think the awd mechanicals are just as important as the computer programming. The awd has to do all the heavy lifting, and some just can't do it for an extended period of time without overheating.

At 5:15 we can hear and see the brake engage on the passenger side rear, and the car rolls backwards, than when the TCS is off. So TCS on is traction control, TCS off is max traction.

I ended up purchasing the CX5 Grand Touring AWD (instead of the Crosstrek) because the interior was vastly superior to the Crosstrek Limited. I understand that the Subaru is better at AWD, but I was wondering... how much of a difference, if any, do the 19 inch wheels and the fairly low-rated OEM Toyo tires make in regards to a diagonal test? For example, if you swapped to 17 inch wheels and a tire that's more soft-roadish like Defender LTX, would the AWD capabilities of the CX5 improve?

Definitely. AWD on the CX-5 will give you lots of confidence on road and will venture to light off road when necessary but for spirited off road driving, well ... that'll be a Range Rover or a Land Rover or a Jeep that you'll need.

100% right, when i was planning to buy my SUV i made a list , Subarus are tough and their AWD system is really strong but they are really ugly and boring cars honestly , Fords are nicer but their score is really low in the top quality list, CRVs are very reliable but also ugly as hell and inside their cabin ughh , so i choose the best looks , with quality and practicality, Mazdas are always inside the top 5 in quality, they hold their value very well, and they looks and feel "a lot more expensive than what it is" , so for me it is a winner. if i need to go off road or to some mountain, or to 10 feet of snow place i will rent a dedicated 4wd Jeep or a 4wd Full size SUV like a Chevy Tahoe, but the rest of the 99.9 % of the time a beautifull practical car is more than enough.

Well I see no diffrence beetween TCS ON or OFF. TCS should apply breaks to the wheels with less traction, so wheels with more traction can spin. Looks like Mazda has some more programing of TCS to do. I wonder who makes TCS for Mazda? Ford propably or a firm derived from Ford?

I'm amazed how many viewers claim they love the way CQ pushes the cars, or they respect his (IMHO unique and extreme) tests - but then DISAGREE with his CONCLUSIONS that the AWD is decent and will be great for most R/W situations. Also with STOCK TIRES apparently almost all cars in this category are underwhelming. And before you tell me about Subaru - it comes with better tires right?
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 6 жыл бұрын
Theur tests don’t test AWD systems, they test engines. All high power engined SUVs do well on their climb tests and all weak engines do poorly. Basic physics. You need torque to go up and over hills.
@subazealand9158
@subazealand9158 4 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 You can have much power, but if you have open diff, and no traction control, the only way to go up there is with speed. This test is not about power, is about AWD and the electronics. A rav4 doesn't have much power than a Subaru, but Rav4 doesn't go up because the electronics sucks!
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 4 жыл бұрын
Baltazar Campos Nieto You are thinking too simply. AWD is about power. It’s about power delivery. Look, the Crosstrek has as good a system as a Forester XT, but it doesn’t do this test nearly as well. Meanwhile, BMWs AWD is nowhere as good, but it does better than a Crosstrek. The first thing you need is sufficient power. The second thing you need is that power to be delivered in a sufficient way. The third is to have traction. Without any of those, you have nothing. However, on a dry incline like this test... power is the more important factor. You always have at least 2 tires on a nice, dry surface, and one is always the front and other is always the rear. Always. If you have enough power, the one drive wheel that’s on the surface will push/pull you up. If this was on a slick surface or if a whole front/rear axle lost traction, like on rollers, then you would be testing mostly the power delivery system, not inertia or total power itself.
@subazealand9158
@subazealand9158 4 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 sorry, sounds wrong your last part. On an incline you have one front, one rear wheel making contact, true. But all this cars they have open differential, so that means all the power (no matter the numbers) will go out to the wheels with less resistance. You only need a decent traction control to be able to stop that spinning wheel and re direct the power to the wheels with grip. Also you need a good AWD that it can transfer good amount of torque to the rear wheels without overheating. Of course if you have all that, plus a powerful engine with a good transmission, this test won't be a problem, but again, the main thing is traction and traction control.
@subazealand9158
@subazealand9158 4 жыл бұрын
Your example of the XV versus XT works because both have same AWD system... But the XT would have same system as a Rav4 for example, you would only burn your tyres faster. Saying this, if the Rav4 would have the same AWD as Subaru, the car would go up same as an Outback (similar engines)...is not about power, is about traction capability.

Am I the only thinking, "Wow it made it" And did so without applying the brake to transfer force to the wheel with traction. That and its the best looking, best handling car in it's class. AND it's naturally aspirated, and doesn't have a shitty cvt. I'm in. And you keyboard warriors wouldn't be caught dead putting your grocery getter on just two wheels. If you're seriously in need of a car that is driven more than once in its life on two wheels, a crossover isn't for you. It's a grocery getter that can make it to the store in the snow. That's all it was designed to do. It wasn't designed to be a seesaw. But... It still made it.

Intel & Nvidia SUXXZZZ!!! This vehicle was not designed for this test. No, it's not a subaru but I was merely pointing out that it did in fact make it over the obstacle, despite not being designed to do anything like this. The awd will operate well within its design criteria; light snow and ice. If you need a car to drive on two or three wheels more than once you shouldn't consider a crossover. Nor a subaru. You need a real, selectable 4wd. As a crossover, I don't think this car can be beat. The awd is functional (it's not weak unless it you are trying to drive it like they do in this test), the dynamics are leaps and bounds better than the competition, it's simple (NA 4cyl, with 6 speed auto), extremely comfortable, and attractive. Name one other crossover that can compete and I'll further explain why you're wrong... Oh and don't forget the price... Subarus are overly complex with their boxer motors and cvts. I wouldn't trust them past 100k before needing a head gasket or a new transmission. I'm a professional mechanical engineer who test drove every car in this segment. If Subaru still made a 6 speed automatic and had no history of head gasket issues, a forester would be in my driveway.

Can we get a video detailing this G vector stuff? Does it have any noticeable or tangible benefits or is it just marketing hype?
@glibsonoran
@glibsonoran 6 жыл бұрын
It reduces torque very slightly right before entering a turn, that shifts the car's weights forward and loads up and compresses the outside front tire. Its purpose is to make that outside front tire compression occur before the turn rather than in the turn. When it happens in the turn the car's stance and position shifts slightly during the turn and the driver has to correct. If the tire is already compressed before the turn the car reacts more linearly. The effect is minor and there's no way to turn it on and off to see the difference in feel. That said the car is very solid and predictable in corners.

I am a little bit disappointed with the performance of the CX-5 in this regard, disappointed as I am looking at the CX-5 as my next car. At work I drive diagonally over a hump exactly like this a few times a month (when the loading dock is occupied I have to either wait a few minutes or squeeze by) and my Forester XT does it smoothly in all conditions, winter, ice etc. Does not even hesitate. This test translates into a few other circumstances as well where this capability is needed. Still not ruling out the CX-5, just a little disappointed.

Yes, AWD is not needed for flatlanders and those who never go off-road. If you're a horrible driver or you panic when driving with snow/ice, then maybe AWD can help, even for primarily flat terrains. But just moderating your acceleration when starting out to build up some speed and also maybe throwing it into a lower gear too will solve most problems on flat terrain. Better gas mileage and fewer potential repairs/cost of maintenance for the FWD too.

Mazda couldn't use traction control like jeep to lock the spinning wheel and transfer torque to the one with traction?
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 6 жыл бұрын
Braking the spinning wheel doesn’t force much torque to the opposing wheel at all, nearly none, in fact. Braking a wheel isn’t the same as a locking diff. They just need to give some gas and the car will go just fine. They attempt these at crawl speed, but these are low poer 4 cylinder engines with heavy cars. You either need power or momentum to get over hills.

I'm pretty sure the facelift of previous gen was better than this. I don't know why Mazda did such a campaign with Subaru to prove their system is better. What's the point of those million of sensors, and active vectoring and the huge list that describes this AWD system if in the real world a simple diagonal test on the gravel the car doesn't know what to do? Sorry Mazda, but you move backward with this new generation of AWD. SUV owners probably doesn't take all of them the car for off road, but having the technology available, what's the point to make it that weak?
@TMS5100
@TMS5100 5 жыл бұрын
> what's the point to make it that weak? complacency, cost cutting. same reason they gave up on IRS for torsion beam in the 3. pure cost cutting. the fact they were able to make a rear torsion beam suspension that wasn't complete shit doesn't negate the fact that torsion beam is still vastly inferior to IRS.

Want traction in snow, winter tires are way more important than AWD. People who write off the best vehicle in class (true of CX-5 & CX-9), because it isn't great on 2 wheels then it's your loss. Go ahead and buy an ugly Subaru with a cheap plastic interior for that one time you may go up a diagnal.
@jpch8814
@jpch8814 6 жыл бұрын
sorry Mazda is not best in class, if you want AWD safety and off road/snow Subaru is the answer, if you want space fuel economy good for price then CRV is the answer, if you want good off road/snow and upscale quality, power and smth good to drive you buy a Tiguan...Mazda has nothing, the problem is Mazda fan boys are blind and know nothing about cars.
@Josh-179
@Josh-179 6 жыл бұрын
jp ch,. LOL, you have very little knowledge about the industry if you believe Mazda's got nothing on the competition. I can guarantee you haven't driven a new Mazda against anything else. Is every auto publication wrong when they name Mazda best in class?
@jpch8814
@jpch8814 6 жыл бұрын
i don't know where you live, but i have driven almost all mid size crossovers, the CX-5 has great handling,upscale interior and quality, however the new Hyundai Tucson is much cheaper equally fun, the new Tiguan is miles better in terms of driving,handling, is higher in terms of quality, and is even cheaper overall. Tiguan was voted SUV of the year, has an award winning engine, great AWD ( MAzda has one of the worst which is dangerous for families on snow) ''Every auto publication'' is your opinion, i can name plenty that say otherwise. finally my friend's CX5 after 3 years has rust all over, he is now fighting with the dealership about this.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 6 жыл бұрын
You just lost EVERYONE. First off, they're CUVs, not "mid size crossovers". That alone says you don't know much about the industry. Second, you just said the Tiguan is better at driving, handling and quality? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The OLD Tiguan was quick, powerful and handled well. Unfortunately it was also a Sub-Compact Utility and tiny at that. The new Tiguan is BIG, but sucks at all of the above. AWD isn't dangerous in snow, even if it's a bad system. AWD doesn't keep you going straight or let you stop faster or let you steer better. AWD only helps you get going if you're stuck and maybe keep you from getting stuck. That's all. It isn't a safety feature.

When i was planning to buy my CUV i made a list , Subarus are tough and their AWD system is really strong but they are really ugly and boring cars honestly , Fords are nicer but their score is really low in the top quality list, CRVs are very reliable but also ugly as hell and inside their cabin ughh , so i choose the best looks , with quality and practicality, Mazdas are always inside the top 5 in quality, they hold their value very well, and they look and feel "a lot more expensive than what it is" , so for me it is a winner, so far it has not let me down in snow or summer, its a champ. if i need to go off road or to some mountain, or to a 10 feet covered of snow place i will rent a dedicated 4wd F 150/Silverado truck or a Jeep , period. , but the rest of the 99.9 % of the time a beautiful practical car great on fuel and so fun to drive is more than enough.

I took my brand new 2017 CX-5 GT two thirds of the way up Yankee Hill road outside Idaho Springs, Colorado before being stopped by giant rocks that I couldn't clear. I shuffled up inclines that surprised myself and my friends. We were also complimented by drivers in a tour of Jeep Wranglers who were impressed we made it as far as we did and by many surprised ATV and dirt bike riders giving the thumbs up as we made our way back down. Had a great time to boot.

It is slightly better but there's absolutely no excuse for this system to NOT be as good as BMW's xDrive. Watch the parts where CX-5's wheels are freely spinning even with TC off, on any modern BMW with xDrive that wheel would stop spinning in a much less time ;-) And BMW's system is also a very simple electronic "brake wheels to emulate LSD", just like on any other modern crossover. Also, it's always amusing to see idiots who already bought the car to desperately try finding excuses like "tires were not right" or "you should not be offroading with CX models"... Idiots who completely fail to realize the fact that no tire will give you perfect traction (not even studded winter tires) and you don't need to go off-road to emulate these tests - you can get into same exact situation just by climbing an ice-covered hill on city streets.

The Forester CVT isn’t much better. Still a ton of wheel slip. The issue in these tests is that they’re doing it wrong (the driving.) They are driving heavy cars with tiny engines. To generate the torque needed to push/pull this weight, especially with just 2 wheels, you need lots of power, so either give it gas. Watch the video for this and the Forester again. When they gove them some gas, they both roll over just fine.

Intrepid Milotic, Why is it unsafe? TCS and snow tires are the best options against loosing control, even if you ride a 4X4 with locked diffs but no ABS or TCS and bald tires... well good luck
@intrepidmilotic5999
@intrepidmilotic5999 6 жыл бұрын
IT is unsafe especially when you are going up on snow. TCS and ABS will not save you. Snow tires are a must ofc. You need an AWD that works, all 4 tires must be getting traction from independent suspension like Subaru,Audi, VW etc...If the car can't pass a silly Diagonal test, that means it has shit AWD, unsafe, does not have smart or enough traction when going up a slope.
