First check what version you have prior to starting, you might be on the latest and not even know it. From the HR - Hit MENU - Settings - Info and test - Genie Info
CE (beta) software is generally (not always and they do skip weeks) released on Friday nights and Saturday from 11 PM ET to 3:00 AM ET. - Current Beta is 0X1210 but current customer release is 0X11B2 as of 5-11-19. There are not many new features in the last year added, just some menu fonts and styles updated over the last 6 months. The latest CE (Beta) release has been fairly stable, it's been a rocky road over the last 6 months but most bugs have been resolved.
Monday to Friday 3 AM ET to 7 AM ET is the latest non-beta release (0X11B2), after 7 AM ET the software stream goes back to a more general version which is known as the national release. Older GUI is gone as of 5-17-18, can no longer downgrade to it, sorry.
Note when upgrading to CE firmware (Friday and Sat 11 PM to 3:00 AM ET) carries some risk and as with any beta it can either delete your recordings or brick the receiver. With that warning said this has not been experienced by anyone with any of the latest releases but again must warn you.

Latest beta (CE) is Friday and Saturday nights 11:15 PM to 2:30 AM ET. During most mornings DTV posts firmware that is general newer releases with no known issues that has the latest features. This is from From 3 AM to 7 AM ET Monday to Friday morning.

You as I did too updated to the CE release (Beta) as that's the Friday night / Saturday night CE releases (not every). I lost the logos and posters, the posters came back within a day and the logos are back this morning. so give it a few days, everything will return. post back if not.

The new GUI firmware is in the stream daily (0X1040) for updating from 3 AM ET TO 7 AM ET Monday - Friday, the weekends (Friday & Saturday) are usually but not always CE (BETA) from 11 PM to 3:00 AM ET, any other times will be the old GUI for the majority of the receivers. Want to update that the HS-17 (genie 2) are able to update as well, Here is the process: (1) Disconnect the Genie 2 from the internet. This may be as easy as disconnecting the network cable or you may need to temporarily disconnect your router if you connected via Wi-Fi. It is possible to change the internet setup using the menus on the client, but then you would have to reconnect after the download is over. However first try it with everything connected, if it doesn't work follow above as it's been reported to work with everything connected. (2) Press the red reset button on the Genie 2. All live and recorded TVs on the client boxes will stop working. (3) At this point, as the box reboots you should the LED on the front turn solid white. When you see that, press and hold the Add Client button until the white light flashes and the download will commence. You won't see a lot of feedback other than the flashing lights on the front. Important: If the light does not turn white do not push the button. Sit back and wait 20 minutes to see if the download finishes. Once you are back on live TV, you can confirm the software version from the client by pressing {MENU} and going to the system setup screens to Info&Test, then selecting "Genie 2 Info" or "Server Info. ENJOY! SUB, LIKE and Comment!

There are a small amount of users with HR54's that need to use an older DTV remote to force the update in place of the RC73. I have the RC73 with an HR54-200 and it worked fine for the majority of the folks who have upgraded. Another tip to get it to work is to set your remote from RF to IR, this has been reported to work. Check the notes above (Show More) and look towards the bottom, I put a link on how to change from RF to IR.

Looks like DTV in the latest releases (1040 & 1082) have removed the logos in the guide on the left. The good news is that the guide is much faster to scroll, the bad news is you have to read the tiny text for channel names and numbers. I have heard that AT&T is looking to better the menus and guide in the next few months, we will see if that comes true!

There was an updated last night CE (Beta) 0X1100 that actually increased the font size but it's HOT mess right now in my opinion and actually prefer the smaller fonts, go figure. I will post a video possible later today or tomorrow if time permits. You can download it during the CE window from 11 PM to 3 AM ET Saturday 6/23 into Sunday 6/24 (Eastern Time Zone)

Of note though, is that for some unknown reason a few Genies (like my HR54-500) can be a little weird and not preform the FW update procedure well or at all over RF from the newer Genie remote. And you have to use the older b&w DIRECTV remote oved IR to reliably do the procedure.

Tech Fan; Yeah I know ... It doesn't happen with most Genies. But in some rare cases like mine the "0-2-4-6-8" on startup method requires the commands by IR from the old remote to work reliably. Had one other person with this problem on their Genie which I had to instruct them about awhile back ...

Thanks, yes I prefer the HR54 over the newer HS-17. The HR54 is the last of the HR series that includes a HDMI output from the receiver. The HS-17 which is the latest and is called headless because it has no HDMI output where you have to use all mini's for clients etc. Hope that helps?

My in-laws got a new tv for from Walmart. The brand name is onn. I tried paring there direct tv remote to the tv but onn isn't in the list of tv's. If i do a firmware update does it update the list of tv's?

Yes, but given DTV does regular updates I doubt it will show up after a forced update. It sounds like DTV does not support that TV, but I suggest trying a few brands manually to see if it works. Many off brands are really a sub of a much larger TV maker. Try LG / Samsung / Emerson / Coby / Goldstar / etc.

Please advise, our Genie-Minis aka the client boxes that get their "redistributed signal" from the Genie Lite. Each of the 3 TVs that are connected to a Mini-Genie lose their signal; consequently nothing is retained in memory which is very aggravating because you can't use the previous channel nor the “Last 4 Channels” . This past Saturday, September 12, 2020 the DirecTV Technician arrived at approximately 1000hrs; commenced looking at the kitchen TV - the Technician stated that it is a software problem and that it only occurs to the Genie Lite boxes; due to all the restrictions ie., the technician cannot upgrade to a full Genie because that requires that the customer call “Customer Service” to upgrade to the full Genie, which according to Technician the bigger Genie does not have the software problem; I insisted that he swap out the Genie Lite with a new Genie Lite to confirm his claim because it is beyond the pale that a company would let a problem like this propagate for years; I was flabbergasted that the Technician claimed that they only install the Genie Lite for “Business-to-Business”. The Technician removed our Genie Lite; discovered that we don't need the Power Inserter because the Genie Lite has its on internal power (?); he reprogrammed each of the four-(4) remote controls and provided a new spare remote; thus far to my surprise the remote in my bedroom can power on/off the TV and control volume . I am really, really disappointed with ATT-DirecTV Customer Service or lack thereof. We immediately received a bill via email that we owe $99.00 - I believe this charge gets credited back to our account once we ship the old Genie Lite - We pay for a "Maintenance Plan", we have to fight to get any "customer service" and then we get sucker-punched again by their "Business Model"! Two days later I am channel surfing and find a ATT-DirecTV Message or Information Channel stating that our equipment is no longer supported and that we qualify for a free upgrade* *Conditions Apply WTF?

Do you mean that DTV hasn't updated you yet or are you talking about forcing the update as I show in the video? If you are going to force the update as I show you need to do it during the window of 3 AM ET to to 7 AM ET when the new GUI update is in stream (0X1040). If you are waiting for DTV to flag your HR and auto update it, it's just a matter of time and should be soon but I can't pinpoint that for you. The are slowly rolling it out to everyone so they don't overwhelm customer service with calls.

There is a known issue with 0x1088 with playlists disappearing and mobile app not connecting. With no ETA from DTV. Looks like for the HR54 they have taken 1088 out of the download stream.

Agreed, had to reboot my HR as some of the recordings disappeared from the HR but not the mini’s. Rebooting fixes it and only happened once. However it’s still being pushed and can be downloaded during the weekday window. They have not pulled it and it’s been almost a month since the last CE beta update. Nothing this weekend again. During the weekend it will be 1037 and Monday 3am to 7 AM ET will be 1088 or something newer.

0X1037 is active now 3 AM to 7 AM ET Monday to Friday, that is the current available version that they are rolling out. Looks like 0X1036 has been replaced with 0X0137

Looks like 0X1037 is daily now 3-7 ET, I updated to it last week and didn't lose the LOGOS from 0X1036, it did knock out my on-demand but that came back after a while (1 Hour). So far so good, no noticed changes so looks like whatever was done in 0X1037 was backend stuff.

I tried rebooting and entered the code 02468 when I saw the blue screen and the menu stayed the same. I heard that the old format was suppose to return. It didn't. Is this info now outdated ? Thanks for making great videos.

Info in the notes above and a pined comment are updated daily when anything changes, I can't update the video without either making a new or deleting it. Are you trying to go back to the old menu or to the latest of the new menu (GUI)? Nothing has changed since the video aside from newer versions. A few things I need to know to be able to help you? Which HR Genie do you have? You can find the model in the info and test of the main menu under settings, go to genie info, example is HR54-200 (that is what I have). Second the current new GUI (MENUS) version is only in the stream for downloading from 3 AM to 7 AM ET Monday - Friday, the old GUI latest version is from 7 AM to 3 AM daily for most receivers in the stream. Answers will help me help you, and I think you want to roll back, which you can but honestly it will just roll forward again within a day or so as you are now tagged to receive the new menus. The video was created to really help folks get the latest version of the new GUI or participate in CE (BETA) downloads. Going back to the old menus is not ideal as they won't stick around for long. It can be done but again, you will have to keep downgrading it. If it didn't work for you there are a few factors and I list them in the notes "show more" above under the video towards the bottom. Make sure to hit the buttons fast enough or switch your remote to IR temporarily. Again all in the notes, there are a handful of folks who has to switch it to IR for it to work but not many. I hope this helps?

All times are ET as timing does matter as to when the latest is in the stream, some days are only "National Rollout" an nothing new and after 7 AM ET for some HR's it rolls back to the older GUI. One TIP, if you start a download and it's not the version you want, just reboot before 90% and it will go back to what was there before and not upgrade until forced again or pushed (Push is from DTV)

The clients update on their own after but not always right away, can take a day or so. Update the HR54 when you see 0X1036 in the stream which has been daily during the week 3 AM ET to 7 AM ET (can change). You can check what version you have on the info page in settings for the HR and the mini. On the RedH site it lists whats in the stream and the latest client (Mini) is 0x0FBA. For the mini's most if not all features like the GUI and programming come from the HR so even after a client update you will not notice anything. All features and services are off the HR and that is were you can update the firmware when in the stream.

I updated the HR yesterday at 6:00 AM Eastern time and nothing happened, I updated it today at 4 AM and it downloaded an Update but when everything finished loading nothing changed, not the GUI, nothing. What am I doing wrong? Also, on one of my minis, the new update shows up for certain settings, for example when I go to change the resolution, I move into the new GUI, but one I back out it changes to the same old GUI, I just got DirecTV about a week ago. What should I do?

As of this morning being Saturday only the OLD GUI was in the stream 0x0D8F, you will have to wait till Monday morning Eastern Time. Always check RedH to see what is active before updating. What you downloaded was a newer update of of the old GUI. Same process to update, give it a shot on Monday as it sounds like it didn't start on Friday for you. You need to be quick on the buttons at the start but it sounds like you got it working once, so what you did there do agin on Monday. Tonight at 11 PM to 3AM ET is CE (BETA) at version 0X1037 but I don't suggest downloading it. 0X1036 which is National Rollout will return at 3 AM on Monday or should 0X1037 go National that will be it but I doubt it.

This is the current version I see list for that receiver - 0X0C32, check what you have now, only upgrade to a newer version, so keep in mind the older versions and newer are online at different times. You will not mess anything up, but only upgrade if there is a reason to do so or you are looking or something.

For HR54-700 it just changed to Announced 0x1075. I tried forcing an update but it is still 0x0D8F. What's the difference between Announced and Active? What are the differences between the columns (Tp21, Tp24, etc)?

If you see it changing during the day outside of the hours I posted that is for testing by DTV and can change at a moments notice, so don't update outside of the windows I posted. I looked when you posted and had seen it go announced and go back to the older software and forward over a 10 min period.

oh forgot to answer the following,tThe columns are just transponders, don't worry about those. During the day it will be the older software (OLD GUI), you might see blips of newer software becoming active or announced but it will be brief and no ideal time to update. Stick with the times I outline in the notes, video and comments.

It's like upgrading your phone / computer, however the production releases you get pushed usually do not have any bugs. Not being able to fast forward would not be in a mass released version. So keep in mind on-demand often has FF disabled just to force you to watch the commercials. Your own recored shows (not a download one from on demand) can FF. This video shows folks how to self upgrade to the latest and greatest version if needed for any reason. Often in the beta release there are additional features but nothing major right now.

I download 0x1100 last night but it appeared to not install completely. There is no change. Under settings it has software as 0x1100 but status still list 0x1037, service 2, Fri 5/11, 4:09a. I tried it several weeks ago, with 0x1088 and had the same result. Status listed 0x1037. My son has 0x1041 and his On Demand work and mine does not. Trying to see if the latest CE will correct the problem with On Demand. Should the status match the software version?

It should match, but which HR do you and your Son have? I downloaded 0X1100 last night and they changed the font to be larger in the guide. I give some tips in my other DTV video's on ways to check on-demand issues.

Sounds good, also was noted by some (small number) that their RC73 remote would not force the update and they had to use an older DTV remote to get it to work. Others have reported back that they got it going after they did it quicker. Which version are you on now?

Question, did you update to 0X1036 or 0X1037? Last night form 11 PM to 3 AM was 0X1037 which is CE (Beta), I have seen a few folks say they lost the logos on that version but they came back by issuing a "clearmybox" command (Just clears the guide data, nothing else) which is done by searching for "clearmybox" from the search menu (HR will reboot). Post back which version, if 0X1036 which I recommend using over CE but it's not a big deal. National Rollout is from M-F 3 AM to 7 AM Eastern.

What firmware version are you on now? When you say it didn't work, do you mean when you rebooted and on the first blue splash screen hitting 0 2 4 6 8 on the remote nothing happened? Which remote do you have? I can say for sure it works on the HR54-200 and many have had success.

Sorry, yes I rebooted and entered 02468 at first splash screen and there was never a download screen, just rebooted as usual. 0xd8f us current software as of Jan 18 7:53 am. RC73 remote.

A couple of things, do you have an older DTV remote laying around by any chance? Before updating did you check the REDH site to make sure 0X1036 was active (IN GREEN)? Is your remote set to RF or IR (shouldn't matter). I will ask around to see if for some reason in OXD8F which is the latest old GUI they somehow disabled updating which I doubt.

If you have an older DTV remote laying around give that a shot as some others have reported and in the notes that a small number of receivers have issues with the RC73 for forcing the update. So if you have an older DTV remote laying around use that and it will work. I have confirmed that it works and at any firmware level that is older.

When DTV flags it, but the new GUI is a slow roll as not to overwhelm the customer service agents from pissed customers who hate the new layout. There is no real known pattern, could be via serial numbers / access cards, regions or markets. Actual updates are done quicker but usually only once a quarter so maybe 4 times a year unless something forces more updates such this new GUI release etc. DTV usually sends an email notifying the customer that its coming but I hear some folks get it but still wait for weeks before being upgraded to the new menu's (GUI). It will upgrade when DTV flags it, usually it's by region or access card ID, they plan it to be a slow go so the customer service folks don't get overwhelmed with calls. If you are still on the old GUI you can expect it any day now, if you are on the new GUI expect it about 4 times a year. Usually every few months or so, since it's a new design there could be more updates needed. Right now I have seen only a few updates released to customers since November.

Tech Fan thanks Someone, AT&T/Directv must be paying attention. My boxes upgraded last night. Trying not to decide until i use the new format for a few days but so far im not a fan. It works well just missing a few things i got used to with the old format. Hopefully ill get used to it and Directv will get everything right with a few minor updates. Thanks again!

You ask you get :) Give time to adjust, many folks after having it for a few weeks start to actually like it. Since it's original release it's very stable, just need them to give an option to increase the font size and make the menus more fluid.

Tech Fan thanks and thanks for being knowledgeable about the things you say/print, alot of people are not and put down a bunch of nonsense. Ill give the new format some time and do like that there is more screen and descriptions are somewhat see through where old had a colored bar. Hope they get information added,cast/crew etc all blank so far and descriptions a little vague cast sats actor I already figured that out. Thinking about it i had primestar until Directv bought them out so around 99-2000 and been with direct since, so last 18 years with old style menus, so this will take time to get ysed to. Older i get the less i like change even though deep down i know change is good and needed especially where technology is concerned. Not to long ago i had a cell phone in my car only,1985, and then numerous flip phones, now i talk,listen to music, check and write emails and respond to Utube all plus more on my cellphone! Hopefully my Directv box will do more soon, faster wifi for one, my router was around 280mbs but with net neutrality now its around 150mbs but box is around 150mbs which works ok for now but could/should be improved and more information woukd be nice about movie/tv show story,awards, cast and other shows similar or part two,three etc. Anyway happy to get and try new format and happy go get help/response on U tube explaining everything! @@annahouston6904 usually it takes a while for on-demand to start working but make sure in the setup menu the receiver can reach the internet. The on-demand is over the Internet and not off the satellite dish.

It does, just not shown in the video as I do not have the HS-17 to show. How to upgrade the HS-17 - You have to unplug the wire for internet for a wired connection, then push the reset button and as soon as the white button comes on not until it comes on push add client on top until the white light blinks then let go and your off until it comes back up (finishes update). Must be done in the window of software you want, for example 3 AM to 7 AM ET will be the newer guide etc.

Always true and I state the risks in the video but with that said and weekly updates taking place with CE on my HR, I have never lost a recording or any corruption of them.

Well I hope y;all are happy with the new menu with it's teeny tiny fonts. I bought a cheap binocular from Walmart so I can read what's on and program descriptions as well. My 24 month contract has just been fulfilled and even though they offered me HBO Showtime and Cinemax free for 12 months I don't think I can deal with this frustration. So, I will return my binoculars to Walmart and cancel Directv. I will use my Tivo OTA along with Netflix and Hulu and I'll be just fine. ^|^

You used a dirty word, "contract" and some are stuck in it, I am in the same boat, the only reason I have DTV is for the picture quality but I hear Aliticeone and now some others are catching up. So many complain about the font size including me but after many revisions since it's release I am doubting any change is coming soon. Even the latest releases do not make any changes to the font, the only improvement has been around the logo size (was increased). So you are not alone!

I CANT believe anyone WANTS to update!?! Have you seen 0x1037!!? Its HORRIBLE!!!! Tech Fan.. is it true you can no longer back-date to the MUCH BETTER old interface? Any ideas on how that possible? After 22 years with awesome DTV, AT&T has ruined it, might be tossing the dish. Please help downgrade Tech Fan!!

Usually someone wants to update off an older version of the new GUI but many want the the old GUI back as you noted. You can downgrade but the HR will just upgrade again within a few days, sorry to say this and many agree with you that the new interface is a lot less friendly than the old one. In my newer video I show a downgrade in process but again don't bother at this point since it will just upgrade again within a day or so. So AT&T says they are working to improve what we see today in a few months but who knows. I am a DTV customer like you and have them for the picture quality which surpasses Dish but I have to admit DISH's hardware is very tempting.
