Jinger Duggar, now Jinger Vuolo, did an interview with Kirk Cameron on his TBN show about her new book - Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear. She talked about the Duggar family, Bill Gothard, and deconstruction. Let's dive into this interview.

100% agree! I use the term “deconstruction” for myself. It’s a neutral word.

No deconstruction is the tearing apart of some thing disentangling is separating truth from lies. There’s nothing neutral about the word deconstruction.

Missed the party. 😥 She is being extremely cryptic because Cameron and his bff Ray Comfort were extremely close to Gothard and spoke at his big homeschool conferences. I was at conferences they spoke at, and I don’t think have ever said anything to condemn the actions or false teachings. All the interviews I’ve heard of the book “read” to me as PR for her family and Grace Church, and MacArthur. One of the things I respect most Dean is your honesty and integrity and pushing back on the word “disentangle”. From the same background I felt insulted by the word and watching all the fundamentalist fall in love with the word.

1. Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate the encouragement. 2. I didn’t know Cameron was so involved with Gothard, although it doesn’t surprise me.

Exactly. 🎯 IMO it’s disingenuous to have Jinger as a guest to interview for your channel when you, YOURSELF push some fundie ideas. Denial runs DEEP 😂😂

She made a lateral move from her father to her husband, she hasn't disentangled ANYTHING just got under a different color umbrella!!! I've seen so many of the Gothard families move laterally to Doug Wilsons cult, which seems more like Gothard plus!

I kind of liked the term disentangle when I first heard it, but then I realized she pitted it against deconstruction. If they are different at all they are neighboring points on a scale. Deconstruction is not as easy as shaving your head. It is painstaking introspection and Bible study. For me it was sorting through teaching that simultaneously said we obey a clear reading of Scripture and preaching that we can know rock music is wrong because of the beat. It’s really hard, quite impossible actually to find the chapter and verse that says that. It was realizing not only had I believed things that were harmful, I had also harmed others with those beliefs. Jinger (with her family) has been the face of a system that harmed. She is broadcasting her own “disentangling” journey while she critiques those who “deconstruct” the same harmful beliefs and teachings. It is disconnected, lacks self awareness, and it’s just mean.

I like the term reconstruction as well, partly because I spent a lot of years growing up "constructing" houses, sometimes remodeling which involves "deconstruction" first. Once it started being used in the religious context, I instantly identified with it.

I see your point, I use "disentangle" but I don't care what others use. I'm just worried if I use deconstruct then I have to deal with being attacked for it and defending my use of the word so it's easier not to.

Why are you so nitpicky?! We should be incredibly encouraged by Jinger's handling of this whole thing! She's named him plenty other places.... she's been cautious a times because she's trying to reach people still stuck in that circle. I can respect that. I like a lot of your stuff Dean, but you just nitpick SOOOO much. Give a little grace huh? I'd like to trust you as a really good balanced source, but I can't because of videos like this. Disentangle is a great word, because if you're deconstructing that's completely tearing down, whereas disentangling is taking the falsehood out from the truth. If someone is deconstructing you're assume they're walking away from truth. If you want to criticize someone, how about her sister who did NOT handle this as well.

1. I’m not saying she or anyone has to use the term “deconstruction,” my point is that it isn’t right or fair to force her term on others. 2. You seem to be falling into the same mistake she did. Deconstruction isn’t tearing down it’s tearing apart. That’s not just semantics but an important distinction. It’s reevaluation, not apostasy. It can result in apostasy just like disentangling because they are the same thing. 3. What did her sister do to be all that different from her?

❤ 2:30 SOLID GOLD 💥 Works based theology = bad fruit such as believers who live in fear 😨 (that was me); pastors who go overboard with controlling tactics bc they know their congregants are not 100% sure of their salvation, and believers whose joy is dampened bc they are hyper focused on if they have stepped off the narrow way.

I like this channel because I am learning a lot about how younger Christians are processing the Christian world around them. I want to stay relevant and engaged with the younger generation in a helpful God honoring way. When my husband and I left fundamentalist's practices when we were young, we just stated I don't think what you are saying is actually taught in the Bible and either stopped following the practice or allowed others their Biblical freedoms. We were able to start attending movies. We did not drink but were not offended if other Christians had a beer at at party. It really seems to be a lot harder for younger people now. I would be interested in why you think that is?

As a homeschooling mother, I would ask you to become more educated in the homeschooling lifestyle and not group all homeschoolers with the ones who belong to churches like Gothards. It just adds to the prejudice against us. Personally, I don't have a proble. With the word "disentangled". I came from a catholic background and I would call part of my journey seeking a relationship with Jesus as having to disentangle from previous beliefs that were not biblical. I didn't use that word at the time but it seems like the right word now.

At the risk of speaking for him, I don't think he was lumping all homeschoolers into the Gothard bucket. The point he appeared to be making was that Christian homeschoolers, and to some extent Christian school-ed kids, often don't hear an alternative point-of-view to the one they're hearing within their educational bubbles. That kind of isolation can be problematic in general, but especially when there is something nefarious going on in the bubble- as in the case with the Gothard camp- and the kids haven't been provided any objective means of recognizing it. I hope there are homeschooling parents who are deliberately non-isolationist in their homeschooling, and giving their children opportunities to experience people, ideas and activities in the broader culture.
@Underdogtheology

What Skate said. My point is that there’s an inherent danger to putting kids in a bubble, not that it always happens. Folks must be careful how they homseschool. Also I don’t care what word folks use to talk about their faith revaluation as long they use the Bible as their standard. Disentangle, deconstruct, generally we’re all trying to communicate the same things.

@DeanLentini well I wouldn't really call what the Gothard group does as Christian. They behave more like a cult. What I meant about educating yourself on homeschooling is that many Christians teach, for instance, what the evolution theory is along with creation. After all, how can you defend your faith if you do not understand what the world view is? Having been public schooled myself and my children in the public school system for some of the time, homeschooling kids are more often far better educated. The Gothard group is extremist.
@Ladybug099
@Ladybug099 11 ай бұрын
@Star-dj1kw there were enough comments made about homeschooling and private school. I know kids who went to private Christian school, and they are better educated and more well rounded than the public schooled kids.

I mean this sincerely. I'm not trying to be snarky, but seriously: What is the difference between Gothard and MacArthur? The more I learn about MacArthur, he just seems to be a slightly different flavor of Gothard's ultra-legalism.

As an adult who was homeschooled k-12. I 100% agree. Homeschooling naturally tends toward sheltering and isolating. If you want to give your children a broader exposure while homeschooling you will most likely have be intentionally branching out. My parents tried to present different views for us to discuss as a family but doing so in our home was such a one sided echo chamber. I appreciated Jen Wilkin’s debate on why send your kids to Public School. She pointed out that when they discussed things in their home with their Public School children those concepts were embodied in people with faces not solely in abstract hypotheticals. This was missing in my Homeschool education and I have felt the impact of it well into my adult life. I am not saying you can't do this well as a homeschool family, but I am saying from my observation it is not normative in Homeschooling circles.

I was homeschooled as well... it's not homeschool you should be blaming, it should be your parents approach. If you want to talk about an "echo chamber" what kind of indoctrination do you think kids are getting at public school????
