I ended up murdering a necromancer who was offering me the power I sought, even though the flow of the story told me that I should accept, all but for a moral reason. I now have to explore the world even further because my characters principles declined my progress. I love that DOS2 offers you this choice. (To be honest I didn't know I would end up fighting the guy just because I turned down his offer, but you know... roll with it, I'm not loading that save!)

I am about 50 hours into it and level 16. This game is the best tabletop-style RPG game I've ever played since Baldurs Gate. The combat is as close to a real D&D game as you can get. The combat encounters, puzzles, and dungeons are like real RPG's. The advantages you get using terrain, obstacles, height, distance are so important in this game that you'll lose without careful consideration. This game is chess whereas all the rest are checkers. I always thought the D&D gold box games of the late 80s and early 90s were some of the most strategic of the turn-based games until I met this game. This game will be for me one with crazy amounts of replayability. I am nearing the last act and I know that the minute I finish this game I will be starting over to play it again with a different main character. I can't recommend it enough.

Greg Michaels agreed this is one of the best games ever. I also love that they don't punish you for being creative, they give you tools and you can solve a problem/complete a quest in many different ways considering that I always loved problem solving and things that force me to think outside the box or use real logic (and not the dreaded video game logic which is barely present in Dos2) this game is perfect for me, a True masterpiece

BioWare is no more EA dissolved the studio. Bethesda they'll just release another version of Skyrim. Why make a new game if you can just rerelease the same game for the 9th time in 6 years?
@darkeningkai
@darkeningkai 6 жыл бұрын
The original creators of Bioware (people behind baldurs gate and dragonage orgins) left the company because they didn't approve of EA's practices. You can google one of the guy's blog post about it, they basically left after crafting Dragonage awakening then EA told them they had one year to make Dragonage2 and they noped out. The people behind Bioware now are completely new people. I get the feeling that Bioware will no longer make roleplaying games since it's not the same company anymore

Well, NWN2 Mask of the Betrayer was vastly superior to Baldur's Gate, and the original NWN offered the only true D&D experience to date with its online community of thousands, and dozens of dedicated RPG servers. I grant that DOS2 design philosophy is closer to BG than MotB was, but for a tight, story-driven RPG that challenged the likes of Planescape and VTM: Bloodlines, you can't do much better than MotB.

Only started playing this game in Jan.. It is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. A great game that allows you to think and really be creative on how you complete the game.. I love how the game encourages you to sometimes use every advantage you can to overcome tougher battles like teleportation, blocking pathways ect, making it rain and then shocking the puddle. Never played Pillars of eternity, how does it compare?

If I remember right, BioWare was originally founded not to make video games, but medical software. They were basically a bioinformatics company. But they got bored and wanted to make a video game, but most of their gaming experience was with pen and paper RPGs, not computer games, so they basically just ended up making up the rules as they went along and somehow managed to craft one of the world's most beloved CRPG. Out of _boredom_

One important thing I learned playing rpg games is that there is no wrong or right, just roleplay what you want, yes some decision would make thing for you harder but they can produce awesome results too. DOS2 is a very flexible game for me. Just think how you enjoy playing the game and do it, don't try to make the best or optimized character.

Yaroslav Gonulenko Thank you for that reply , I think in a lot of games I play I spend hours researching how to play it the most optimal way I loose sight of what actually matters, the game itself , I guess games are meant to be fun and sometimes I just feel overwhelmed by it all, I think I’m going to purchase it after your comment and just enjoy it for what it is, thank you ☺️

Yeah, I played Pyromancer and let Sebille kill that lizard. Aaand was running 6 more hours with basic spells cause he was selling Pyromancy tomes. Then I went to local gang boss in order to complete one quest, killed him in the process and that prevented me from progressing in another quest. Amazing. Also one fight can take from 30 minutes to 1 hour of your time, so you don’t want to save/load to often

As much as I love the Original Sin games ... I still miss Divinity's roots a lot. Seriously, the original "Divine Divinity" might probably be my favorite game of all time. I don't really wanna compare these games but there is one major thing that I think made me feel much more comfortable with the original DivDiv than the modern ones: The battle system. I reaaaally really miss the Active Time Battle System which worked perfectly in both Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity - and also in Divinity 2, even though it was a little different there. Plus, I'm missing the world. Honestly, y'all couldn't believe how much I'd explode by happiness if I could walk through Aleroth, Rivertown and Verdistis again now that they have changed. As far as I know, Original Sin 2 plays shortly after Divine Divnity and I haven't played OS2 much yet but ... well ... considering the places I've been in so far, my hopes are pretty low to ever see those locations and characters again. However, I am still very glad that the "Divinity" series still exists.

Yjorik actually, this game is unfairly getting a rep as an overly complex or even a hard game. I played the previous game DOS1 and in it I finally hit a wall at about 50% through the game and was forced to give up because I could not get past a fight. I had not planned my characters well enough or maybe hadn't leveled them enough (and I was following build guides) This game however, I have just dived in at classic difficulty without reading any guides or build advice and I am having a much easier and more fun time than in DOS1. If you ask me, Larian has streamlined a lot of the needlessly complex stuff and tonned down on what made these types of games a chore. They have made the game overall far more enjoyable and accessible to average gamers.

Sure, the magisters try to counter this with (evil) order, but they're not very successful. "Original Sin is brilliant not because it presents you with choices to make but because it let’s you create those choices yourself.” - This would mean that the game world reacts dynamically to everything you do, which is not the case. When you lose your anti-source collar, for example, you can still approach everyone in the sourcerer ghetto and buy stuff from them. Not even the thug terrorising the camp will try to force (or bribe) you into telling him how you did it. And that’s one of the more obvious examples. You speak about having Sebille and the Red Lizard in your group. They’re mortal enemies and the game mostly ignores that fact while Sebille has not issues with killing people of minor things in other instances. You claim that your character “looks like an undead” with a bucket as a helmet. This does not only raise the question why you don’t use wear a proper helmet, it is also your personal opinion. Although you suggest that NPC react to it, that’s not true. In fact the undead even start with a hood, which looks far less ridiculous than a bucket. “D:OS 2 encourages mistakes” - You apparently only played on explorer mode. In tactician mistakes mean death.

This makes it seem like Baldur's Gate came out of nowhere, that it's the best RPG of its era, or that RPGs were ever "not played". Yes, I grant that it gave them some mainstream traction, but it's not as if games of the millenial golden age like Morrowind, Gothic, Wizardry 8 or Deus Ex really had anything to do with its success - they were mostly already in development and BG just got there first. Secondly, the early 90s RPG boom (previous Wizardry titles, Betrayal of Krondor, Ultima Underworld and Ultima VII, Lands of Lore, Quest for Glory) was hardly ancient history in 1998. People would still have been playing games launched in 1993 at that time. Yes, in retrospect there was a small lurch in RPGs between 1993 and 1997/1998 specifically, and as you say it coincided with technological advances in other genres, but 5 years is hardly an extinction of a genre. The decline in the late 00s, early 10s was probably worse. Third, it's not like RPGs ever went away. Daggerfall (1996), Might & Magic VI (1998), Jagged Alliance 2 (1999) are some of the best-loved games to this day. I do think it's fair to say there have been three "golden ages" of modern PC RPGs, from late 80s to 1993, from 1998 to about 2004, and from 2013ish to this day. But these are broad generalizations, not attributable to any single game. Even more, most gamers probably also owned a PlayStation (2) at the time or had friends who did, so no one went entirely RPGless. I get that you're comparing your personal experience with Baldur's Gate and how DOS2 resonates with it. But let's not craft a narrative to suggest that Baldur's Gate was the saviour of RPGs and Divinity its sole successor. It was one particularly successful RPG that broke into the mainstream and gave some financial motivation to pursue the genre, but I doubt many of the best RPGs of the turn of the millenium would really have been left unmade without it. Sure, KOTOR and NWN2 would have, and that would have been a damn shame, but TES, DX, Troika etc. would have trudged on. (Even Divine Divinity would probably have been made!)

So you can do anything in this game? Can you put a bucket on the head of the 27th enemy you encounter thus preventing a series of events that leads to the defeat of a secondary antagonist? I thought not. Game score: 0 out of 10.

what game have you ever played that has allowed that? therefore all games ever made scored 0 out of 10? even games that are/were the highlight of their generations like witcher 3 or Portal 2?

Except for the fact that Divinity: Original Sin 2 seems to often FORGET your character choices. I chose to romance one character, and at a very... specific and important point in the story, it is the other female character that kisses me, says she loves me and you have a moment with her, even though I turned her down for the other. This is but one of the moments where the game really fell short for me. The main reason I find this pretty unforgiveable is the fact that... the game gives you the chance to make a choice, and then you are taken out of the emotions said choice could bring as it simply fucks it up and seemingly forgets what choice you made. Overall, I liked the game, but I really did not like how they handled the end.

On Baldur's Gate being an anomaly re: being an RPG for the PC platform, and somehow 'revitalizing' the genre on that platform... Oh Please, what a bunch of hyperbole. In addition to Diablo & Fallout, we had Fallout 2 *contemporary* with BG in 1998, along with Return to Krondor, Elder Scrolls: Redguard, Might & Magic 6, Quest for Glory 5, as well as several anthologies of things like the older QfG games and Wizardry. That is *just* in 1998... we widen the selection back to 1996 We get ES: Daggerfall, Dungeon-Crawler classics like Realms of Arkania, Betrayl at Antara. And as can be seen from pretty much every title I just listed, drawing on pen & paper was neither unusual or notable.... the grand old days of the SSI licensed D&D titles was still fairly fresh in everyone's minds. Oh, and BTW... seems BG came out *21st of December 1998*. So you pretty much even lose the claim that it's contemporaries were cashing in on the coat tails of it's success. Baldur's Gate, and pretty much everything else Bioware & Black Isle made was considered pure gold around this time, sure... and JRPGs in console-land were definitely more abundant. But this idea that BG was some grand messiah swooping into save CRPGS is ridiculous. No one thought the genre needed saving at that point. The decline happened right after, which more than likely was due to the shift of the generation of gamers who cut their teeth in the boom NES, SNES, & Genesis gamers entering young adult hood, with the attendant concerns of less money & free time, and the gradual shift away from PC gaming in favor of consoles. As I can personally attest, being in that age demographic.

It may not have saved crpgs but its certainly one of the biggest successes of the genre and that is the reason why it comes up in discussions about other crpgs. Also, I don't know the exact numbers but bl1 sold at least twice the no of copies compared to fallout the other notable top down rpg success and bl2 even topped that

Did any of those games got as widely recognition as baldur's gates? All the game you mention have nowhere near as much attention as baldur's gates. You said it yourself how you're fan of the genre. So ofcourse it means you gonna be closely follow the genre and know every RPG along with some tighten-RPG community fellow. In business and general public's view however said otherwise. CRPG are dying since 1993. Ever since ultima underworld. People were looking into and interested more into action and strategy genre on PC. Dungeon keeper, Goldeneye 007, Quake and doom etc were all massive successful. Why are they talking about that instead of Wizardry 5? When you compare to your beloved RPG you mentioned. Almost nothing reach the recognition any of the game i mention. The only WRPG with commercial success and have as much recognition as titles above is baldur's gates. (don't count fallout, now it's being memorable all because fallout 3 which wasn't full RPG) Can you say the same about lands of lore and betrayal at antera? And all title you mention in 1996 weren't ever mentioned anywhere else even now. And i mean it. ANYWHERE else. Nobody talks about it nor care enough to revive it with remastered. Without GOG people may weren't even remember anything. Because when they think CRPG they think baldur's gates and planescape first. Not your realm of arkania. 1997 was truly the year that restart CRPG and make CRPG as genre become popular again thanks to fallout. And soon after the true CRPG era is back in 1998 with baldur's gates and fallout 2, 1999 with planescape and a lot of memorable titles long until 2005 where the genre die along with KOTOR 2. The narrator was corrected and nothing was hyperbolic. You gotta look into other perspective man. Not only in hardcore genre fans view.

Oops, I came to write much the same thing (although I do think it's fair to say RPGs post-93 were not as successful or well-remembered today). Even if there was a slight decline, before they picked up again and transformed 1998-2004 or so, it was only like 5 years. That's nothing in an era where you save up 6 months to buy your game from the store and play it for the next three years non-stop! People were probably just wrapping up Daggerfall if they even got to it yet. Just because there's a lack of titles in 1994-1996 on any modern best-of lists doesn't mean it was experienced as a dry spell. Just random variation, enhanced by attention to other genres that could leverage technological advances better.

Jack TheLad try playing it a bit longer to get a feel for it, we're too used to games that hold your hand so it can take a while to get used to it. I bought it in bêta and had it refunded shortly after, I only recently bought it again and now I love it, the 2 hours you get from steam aren't enough if this is one of your first crpgs. I highly recommend it though it's a masterpiece, and I was never a fan of turn based games before (I tried tyranny but ended up abandonning it later) but this changed my mind completely, I have a hard time stopping the game and I always think about it when i'm not playing it or working.
