By far the best home-rattle can paint job on KZbin. The dish soap method gives very good results combined with a conservative approach to laying paint on. In turn Coupled with the fact that your colour choice was as good as it gets. it has a nice high end finish too it. I’d be proud of the end result. 👍

I paint a lot of rifles , interesting concept using the dish soap like a "liquid stencil " , most people don't realize that for good camo effect, that the different colors must break all the edges of the rifle to break the outline or silhouette. The dish soap does a great job of breaking the edges by flowing over them. I do exact matches of military camo's tiger stripe , marpat , multicam etc. Another quick concept I have used is Sea Sponge Camo ! You just paint a base coat and then use pieces of cut sea sponge to dob on different colors of paint, each cut of the sea sponge gives a slightly different pattern for each color . Be sure to blot the sea sponge on something between dipping it in the paint and transferring it to the rifle so no paint runs. It's a great method for getting the colors and pattern exactly where you want them. WARNING ! Painting camo is addictive " none of my rifles are black anymore " and all my shooting buddies are jealous .

That looks really good. I think I would have gone a little more tan and coyote brown with a lighter drab. Maybe even a dash of light stone grey in spots but ONLY because I live in a desert region so it makes more sense for me and my surroundings. I've seen this same dish soap technique used for sneakers before as well. Very effective method, nice job bro. A tip though to anyone else looking to paint like this, lighter more misty multiple coats of paint tend to take longer to wear off. 4-5 very light dusting coats for the base layer works well in my experience. Thick coats will chip off alot easier. Also, if your colors end up a little darker than you meant to paint, you can hit it all with a very light coat of matte clear at the end to lighten shades up a bit and get a small amount of added wear resistance as a bonus. PS Rust-Oleum tends to last I bit longer than krylon in my experience, bet.

I’ve seen camo comparisons on different backdrops from kuiu and Sitka ect. And it seems, at distance, that larger patterns help break up lines better than smaller more detailed patterns. I’m sure it’s better than a black or monochrome color.

How durable is a paint job like this? It looks great but what about down the road a few months after regular use and cleaning? Solvent friendly?

You're final step should be a nonsheen clear coat it will protect the finish from peeling off especially on the stock and pistol grip but otherwise 👍

100 percent. I just didn't have any when I was doing it. Baking on the finish with a space heater has also really helped the paint stay.

This video inspired me to do the same thing (or at least my version of it) thank you for the dope video. Yours turned out a little bit better than mine i think. I should have done the 2nd coat with the soap going opposite direction like you did. I still love the way mine turned out. But I'll do closer to this next time for sure. Btw, it's my most recent video if you want to take a look at my outcome. Thanks again ✌️

This is outstanding. I have used similar methods (such as Rice) and I can see the wide range of applications for the soap method. Have you ever thought about using oil instead of soap? A .99 cent squeeze bottle (you can cut the tip off to gauge the amount of oil) and paint at will. Just in case some folks are not big on the soap idea.
@3KindsOfGuns
@3KindsOfGuns Жыл бұрын
Nope, have never considered oil, but I am very intrigued by the idea of rice to add visual texture. Will try that on my next one!

I would think dish soap is easier to wash off, than covering your gun with oil and then trying to wipe it off. I think dish soap is a pretty smart way of doing it!

I rattle canned my AR by using burlap first and then a hanging fern leaf last , the camo pattern literally made the rifle invisible at night , I won’t set it down in the woods because I probably wouldn’t be able to find it , going to do my 10-22 next , there are a few other steps in the process I didn’t mention so if your thinking about doing your rifle you just have to go for it , no guts no glory

and its tru lots are skeptical including me but its something that just keeps hammer away at me until i do it i guess....i dont have something super expensive. what gets me is when you hea lots say,,,he once you go in literally cant come out or cant be undone though ive heard some differ and state possibly can,,,but im like if i do it then im not necessarily intrested in undoing it,,because if comes a day when(SHTF) SMILE (SOMETHING or STUFF HITS THE FAN) SMILE then its easier to adjust to environment or surroundings with the simplicity of a mere rattle can to dress it close as you can....very well recorded visual sound every thing ,,,even the sound effects of your dog with the plastic bottle smile...Supah Nice!!

Crazy! This whole spray painting a $1k+ rifle/pistol reminds me of when there were ak's and sks pattern rifles for $200 and they all got Bubba-rized with plastic stocks and cheap slings. Why don't you just order a rifle with the color pattern you want?
