54 years of age had heart attack and replaced 2 stents. Doctor said, sugar hba1c 14 and 459 dl. You are diabetic, that is why you had heart attack. After 10 months keto diet but not strictly, now hba1c 6.0 and 105 dl. Lost 55 lb. My heart pumping rate went up from %55 to %65. No carbs, no sugar, no fruits, no refined foods. Now i feel way better than my last 25 years.

Interesting . But when I told my cardiologist I was going to lose weight he told me “ I have plenty of skinny heart patients . You need to work on getting more fit .” For me that meant more exercise since I am vegan . I’m just saying that weight is not a standard of how healthy you are . Putting animal fat in your piehole consistently never will be healthy for a human being . Period.

I went Keto at age 57. I lost 150lbs. I went from 321lbs to 170lbs and have maintained it for over 2 years. I got rid of my severe fatty liver. But, this past December my blood pressure went to 90/40. I was diagnosed with severe aortic insufficiency and needed my Aortic Valve replaced. When the surgeon replaced my aortic valve it had a 4-5mm hole in a leaflet (it was also bicuspid instead of tricuspid). I’ve been Keto all through recovery and have recovered fast. When they performed a heart catheterization on me my coronary arteries were clean. My lipids on Keto have improved immensely. They currently are: Total Cholesterol = 169 Triglycerides = 42 HDL = 64 VLDL = 9 LDL = 96 Keto had nothing to do with my bad valve. My valve was congenitally defective, plus had a hole in it due to endocarditis.

Many industries force their experts to re-certify or upgrade their skills on a regular basis and the fact that doctors don't know the effects of diet is evidence that this needs to happen in the medical fields as well. I got lucky, my cardiologist wanted to prescribe more meds but my endocrinologist agreed with my plan to go keto and actually encouraged IF. Two years later and I'm still down 75lbs, off all my meds and feeling great.

@@Ak-Kahf isn't it surprising that many on keto diet claim weight-loss of 20-80 lbs within 6 months? Maybe saturated fats don't correlate with body-fat, while the reduced diet-component, carbs, do? Yes, you get tested on what you were taught, and even put down as 'guidelines' and 'Standard of Care', without questioning. Baby-aspirin is used for CVD and preventing toxemia in pregnancy, despite its acidic and corrosive nature that causes internal bleeding. How many have died from that in their sleep, i e. strokes? I know i lost two friends from that innocent-sounding 'baby-aspirin'. There are much better alternatives that are safer too, such as vitamin E-tocotrienols, krill oil, fish oil, Gingko Biloba, Pine-bark extracts. Fortunately my doctor -friends are willing to switch to these more expensive, and much safer/better, alternatives, while others still stick to these guidelines and Standard-of-care that give them some defense in a malpractice lawsuit.

What you forgot to tell people is that In 1972 Dr. George Mann got the autopsy arteries of the Maasai and they had extensive atherosclerosis even though they spent a lifetime of being super fit with a BMI of 19-21 and no junk food. How do you explain this? The Maasai ate a whole food animal based diet.

High milk ingestion. Inflammatory. My educated guess..
@tanyasydney2235
@tanyasydney2235 Жыл бұрын
Nevertheless as the Maasai have grown in number, and can no longer produce enough food for their own consumption in their traditional ways, they have been forced to include more and more foods from other sources in their diet, such as corn and millet. This means the Maasai’s diet is now far richer in carbohydrates than before. The Maasai have sweetened milk tea with porridge in the morning, and for lunch they eat milk and "Ugali," a kind of polenta made from cornmeal and water. For dinner they eat something similar to lunch. As it can be seen, it is very clear that meat doesn't feature on the Maasai normal daily diet. Meat is usually consumed during special occasions. However, the vast majority of their diet consists of vegetarian food.
@StanDupp6371
@StanDupp6371 Жыл бұрын
@@tanyasydney2235 So the Maasai eat a different diet now and so have different type of health outcomes, but that still does not explain why they had extensive atherosclerosis being super slim and fit and eating only whole unprocessed animal foods. The trade off with this ancestral carnivore diet is you have good health but your life expectancy is low as you get heart disease. This is why no centenarians consume this keto or carnivore diet.
@tanyasydney2235
@tanyasydney2235 Жыл бұрын
@@StanDupp6371 It could be the milk in their diet, though we can't know for sure. The Masai, contrary to popular belief, did not eat a lot of meat. They couldn't afford to slaughter their cattle. So they primarily consumed milk, some meat, blood, fat, honey and the bark of some trees. Blood is not only drunk fresh or coagulated, it is also boiled and used as an ingredient in soups and stews, where it is accompanied with ugali, a typical dish made from smashed white corn. Many centenarians consume at least some animal products. Very few are Vegan. Okinawans eat seafood, Sardinians lamb, Loma Linda eggs and dairy. And some centenarians are even known to enjoy some alcohol and tobacco. I think there are way too many variables to draw any black and white conclusions about anyone. That's why I try to listen to what my own body needs rather than follow someone else's often rigid dietary dogma.

The big problem is the definition of the keto diet how you said. There are different keto diets with different macronutrient values. And we always have to check how many saturated and unsaturated fats are actually consumed. But there is more we need to check. How is the stress level, how are the homocysteine values, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiency, to less fibres and how is it all connected to the hypothalamus and our brain and gut axis. There are many interesting studies about that and it always depends on the food intake (dairy products/fat or good fats) and the macro and micro nutrients. We need to eat much more unsaturated fats then saturated fats and we need to keep an eye on other micronutrients. But all in all it can help many people to be much more healthy and loose weight. The thing I realised is as long as you loose weight you will be much healthier then having obesity. So Just start somewhere haha Carbs are worse than people think. Fat doesn't make you fat!!!!

But one may work better than the other for various things, and on various people. For example, Keto was not helping my HBP, and might (just maybe) exacerbated it a small bit. Back to Macrobiotic and it seems to be better for some things, including the HBP. In either case, one needs to take care not to over do the whole grains on Macro, or over do the fats on Keto.

Although the media reported this link between keto diets CVD risk, this is based on observational data that hasn’t yet been published in a scientific Journal. Observational data is considered very weak, especially when It is based on self-reported intake, as it was in this case. If people reported eating less than 25% of their total daily calories as carbs and more than 45% of their daily calories from fat, they were considered “LCHF.” But self-reported dietary intake is notoriously inaccurate. So the causal chain between keto/low-carb diets and increased CVD risk is extremely weak, as is the case with previous observational studies linking diet with disease risk.

Doc, what about bone density? Does a long term keto diet increase risk of bone loss?
@btudrus
@btudrus Жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite! Three reasons: 1) sugar(fructose) and the resulting high insulin damages bone health 2) high quality protein (e.g. found in meat) is necessary to maintain a good bone health 3) vitamine D and vitamine K2 is made (by a series of reactions) from the cholesterol. The capacity of the body to produce cholesterol is quite limited so you need dietary cholesterol. Both vitamines (D and K2) are necessary for a good bone health. Dietary sugar (fructose/sucrose) depletes vitamine D in the circulation.
@dawnelder9046

Read The Calcium Paradox. Vitamin K2-4 is needed to direct calcium to bones and teeth and away from soft tissue like arteries. The best source is Gouda cheese. But other real cheese also contains it. Eggs, meat and butter are also sources. You also need Vitamin D for strong bones. And like all hormones, you need Cholesterol to make it. Same sources. Finally you need retinal A for strong bones. Only 20 percent of the population can convert enough beta carotene into retinal A. Twenty percent can not convert it at all. Everyone else lands somewhere in between. Again retinal A comes from animal sources. I had a bone density test two years before going low carb and 3 years after. My bone density increased slightly. Low carb 13 years now. The province I moved to does not Density tests until 65, and while I have reached that age, it will likely be a while before I get the next one. Now I have also been taking k2-7 for the last 5 years. The body does need to convert it into K2-4, but it lasts longer in the body. But I was walking down a ramp two years back, carrying some things. Stepped on black ice. Suddenly on the ground beside the ramp looking up at the sky. Nothing broken. Not even a bruise. So I am going to guess my bones are in good shape for my age.

I was on keto for 7 years and suffered heart failure because I never was able to control my blood pressure while on keto. I’m now on a DASH diet and all of my vitals are now normal. I had no blockages in my arteries thanks possibly to keto but BP was an average 230/120. I should have eaten healthy fats and no salt keto. I’m doing great on the DASH diet with a BP of 110/70 average. I don’t listen to this so-called studies anymore. I check my vitals everyday and they tell me if a diet is working. Plus keto is a boring way of eating.

As a person who used Keto to lose weight and then to maintain a health weight, I think it's very possible to eat keto without losing weight. For me, the trick is to add keto calories and not carb calories. A few extra nuts as a snack, an extra piece of bacon or another egg at breakfast, a bigger piece of meat with dinner, a smoothie with the whole avocado instead of half...that sort of thing. I hope you find a solution that works for you.

None of these studies mean keto is not bad long term, obviously when a person loses weight their markers and health will improve. The question is what is the effect after the weight loss is done and the person is at their optimal weight, does it make sense to keep eating no carbs at that point. The LDL is likely going to be much higher than just +10% when you compare people at steady weight and that is the issue, high ApoB for long term on keto when weight isn't an issue anymore. If someone has good ApoB numbers on keto then they are likely to not have a big problem with the diet, but I suspect most people that are on keto will never be near any optimal LDL values after the initial phase when they are losing the weight.

The only sure way to tell if you are on a working keto diet for the percentage of carbs in your diet is to test -- anyone can easily test their urine with a keto stick. If it does not show ketones, then you are not on a keto diet. Just assuming some percentage of carbs means 'keto diet' is nonsense. People differ a lot in their carb tolerance. 17% works for me. I doubt 40% carbs works for many people, if anyone.

If I ate traditional keto with lots of dairy, I would have worse cardiovascular disease again, because dairy was the cause of it for me in the first place. Had triple bypass open heart surgery at 23 because of dairy triggering my autoimmune CVD, skinny as a stick and normal lipids. It's so inflammatory to me when I eat any dairy, I can't eat any at all for any reason. Still, eating high dairy keto definitely helped me lose 25 lbs of prednisone weight effortlessly when I first tried low carb eating, so I'd definitely recommend it for weight loss!

how can we measure human biological dynamics in absolute percentage points? May be with machines, like cars etc, it can work, but it is absolute misleading bs when they say reduced so and so many percent this risk or that risk, really, it is total bs. Perhaps it would make a little bit sense, if they did a trial on a set of humans with absolutely identical everything: body, size, weight, mind, thinking, lifestyle, the food they have been eating since they were born, and were born in the exact same way, were conceived in the exact same way, perhaps, but then, where the hell would you find a set of humans identical like that?
