Dr. Tim Noakes would disagree with you on maintaining a keto diet during pregnancy. That point was won in a South African courtroom when a woman online sued him for malpractice for recommending a keto diet during pregnancy. Of course, a keto diet while pregnant and nursing is the healthiest diet you can have.

I am not a doctor, nor am I in any health profession. I just want to express my experience of fasting because fasting has changed my life. I know Fasting works! I'm doing OMAD because I have had insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, fatty liver, and I didn't feel well. I started my OMAD and low-carbs journey on 1/1/2021. After a year plus, I lost a total of around 50lbs, and the result is awesome. Finally, I am not pill-dependent. I don’t know whether or not I completely fixed my fatty liver, but I feel so much better. I chose to eat my one meal around 12pm, and I sleep so much better with no food in my stomach. Yes, it was very difficult to start because hunger always wins. If you cut sugar and eat low carbs, it will help to control hunger. I got my body in trouble by eating junk food, so I have to eat my way out of trouble by eating real food. Good luck and stay safe!

Lasik, what I learned is that it just takes patience. The body is incredibly adaptive. At first you will be mad with hunger, but if you just hold out, it's like your body decides, "oh, I guess I don't need to do this", and the cravings will subside.

I am going to be 80 in a few months. I managed to lose about 50 lbs. the old fashioned way. Then With intermittent fasting I managed to lose another 100 lbs. I was obese for more than 50 years. I was really pissed that I had to be 77 before I learned about intermittent fasting! All my numbers have improved. I’m off metformin and GABAPENTIN. I can cross my legs…both sides! I don’t recognize myself when I look in a mirror. I look like my mother! It’s a lovely way to remember her. Don’t put it off for as long as I did. Take care of yourself. And PS. I just discovered this channel and It’s been really helpful. There are people who ask me about IF and I feel I can refer them to this channel. There are other good channels, but I think he does an excellent job of explaining, describing and summarizing this issue.

What happened to all that excess flabby skin after weight loss.
@eubelk
@eubelk 2 жыл бұрын
@@evab2132 well, it’s odd. I mean, I was expecting to have a lot of flabby skin. There is some, but not as much as I expected. I have flabby skin like you get when you age, like wiggly upper arms. And my thighs are all wrinkly and “crepey”. But I have friends who have not lost weight and their thighs are also crepey. You know, like crepe fabric or like crepe paper? Wrinkled. Then, and this is an odd feeling, when I do my silver sneakers cardio routine, and I run in place, everything around my hips and behind, jiggles! So I am not firm, but I still have muscle. I do have flabby skin, but not nearly as much as I expected. I was not thinking about it while I was losing. Later I was wondering how much does that extra skin weigh? How much would I weigh if the excess skin was removed? But I read that excess skin doesn’t weigh that much. At my highest I was 275. Last visit to the dr. (I do not weigh myself regularly, I do not want to be checking daily if I’ve lost) I was 128. I couldn’t believe it! At 142 I was saying “hallelujah”. I’m 5’2”. Hope this has been useful.

I’ll be sixty two soon and have been intermittent fasting for two years. I start eating first meal at 12 or later if I have appointments and stop the latest six p.m. In the two years , I have eliminated potatoes, rice, pasta. I eat bread with my eggs, and cut out most sweets. I don’t drink anything with sugar, no wine, 😞 no honey😞. I will bake a lemon blueberry pound cake and eat it throughout the week during my eating window, and now I have to learn to cut down on the cheese. I thought the starches was going to be hard but cheese & butter is the hardest. My blood work was the best ever , have slimmed down, my skin is nice for my age. I’m a carb addict and I have to keep the enemy out of my house. It’s not easy because I’m a baker😱. This is the only thing I can stick to. I have done water fasts for two days but I’m very miserable during that time. Most days of the week I eat one meal. Thank you for your time❤️

To piggyback- I've stated for years that if I could choose to eat when I needed to, it would typically be one meal around 2pm most days, sometimes an earlier snack if I've been particularly active or need some specific nutrient. It's what I default to without even thinking when schedules don't dictate when I can eat. I wonder how many others would find this if they had the optiona and wherewithall to follow a rhythm.

Exactly the opposite. I have been researching keto for more than 10 years now and fasting for 3 years or so. This is one of the worst presented information in any videos on the subjects. No citations of the studies. Dubious claims. You can actually check and see that the switching between being on fast and having ketones and then eating in a time window actually is NOT better than fasting for longer or staying on keto. Its just false claim backed up by nothing (at least nothing given as reference).

I told my doctors, who were encouraging, but thought the 3 days were a bit much. I guess they want to keep giving me pills for whatever maladies plague me. My body and mind wins out. The results of IF, OMAD and fasting works better than any pill.

First cycle was 3 days, eat as usual, 4th day fast. First weeks were hard but then much easier. But what I found significant was during my normal days I was "full" with less and less. Maybe the behavior modification was more effective than the caloric restriction. I may not be as strict about it, but is now my new "normal".

My specialist didn’t like it either. I had PCOS and insulin resistance, and was trying to lose weight to safely get pregnant (gestational diabetes happens a lot with women in my family). At first she said I needed to stop fasting and eat SIX SMALL MEALS A DAY, about 1,000 calories a day. Ugh. Well my bloodwork came back after I’d been fasting four months. Triglycerides were down and my insulin level was amazing! I also, weirdly, was no longer anemic. The grudging theory she gave me is that since my reflux is better now that I’m not eating frequently, I’m better able to absorb nutrients from my food. Since switching to OMAD and adding a 20-30 minute walk daily, I’ve been able to lose five points in five weeks. Which for me is HUGE. Before when I tried to lose weight, nothing happened, or I lost maybe a pound a month. At this rate, I’ll be able to hit my target goal to carry extra baby weight without it making my back completely freak out (chronic pain here!) well before the start date my husband and I have of next Christmas. 😊 What’s even cooler is that, my doctor saw all the changes I’ve made (like getting off opiates because I knew there was NO way I could shoot for motherhood while being on them) and reversing the insulin resistance, and green lit me, so if the timing was right, we could start trying for a family now. It’s just my caution about added weight freaking out my back that’s holding me back, and waiting for my hubby to finish grad school. It really is so much more than weight loss. ❤️

Time restricted feeding allowed me to lose weight when I wasn’t even intending to (I lost 15 pounds and I wasn’t even overweight, I did it to reduce inflammation for my back pain), and keep my ideal weight for two years now, and it’s so easy. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, I did have to struggle against hunger at night, but I enjoyed mastering that, once I was able to control it, I was no longer hungry. It became second nature to me to eat during a 10 hour window and fast the other 14 hours, I just don’t eat anything after 6:30 at the latest…sometimes it’s 5, sometimes it’s 7, and I don’t start until 9, sometimes it’s 8, sometimes it’s 10. Don’t overthink it, be flexible, it will become second nature. I also became vegan, but that didn’t make a difference in my weight, since I was already at my ideal weight thanks to IT.

@@renwot3435 to clarify something, I started fasting for about 16 hours a day, and thats how I lost the weight, but I only did that for a month or so, ever since then I do about 14 a day, and that has allowed me to maintain the weight off. There are days I do more hours, just because I have something to do in the morning and I delay breakfast. It’s a flexible thing, I don’t obsess over it, but the main thing is that I don’t eat anything at night.

I chose OMAD because it was getting so confusing for me to limit my calorie intake. I have eaten homemade, healthy, whole grain food for years, but whenever I gain it gets difficult to get rid of the weight. I love food, I can't eat a whole lot of raw salad. Nuts and nut butter makes me more fat, I love my grains, I can't go carb free of quit caffeine. So OMAD seems a simpler way, where I eat my favorite food, which of course I prepare myself using ingredients wisely. It's been 2 weeks, I haven't lost much, but I feel happier, more confident. I just hope I am able to reach my desired fitness

Thanks doc at one time I'd struggle fasting 12 before a blood test. Then about 2 months ago I decided to give intermittent a try. Slowly increasing the time between my last food and bed and delaying breakfast a little I'm over 14 hour now. The funny thing is I not crazy hungry in the morning like I was before after 12 hours. Sleep seems to be getting better as is my digestion. Also I don't have the same desire to snack during the day as before. May increase to a 16 / 8 or not will see how it feels. TY Doc, Ed

It sounds as your quantity of food might be your main problem. Your diet was or is probably high in foods that have a high GI or foods that make your blood sugar go up quickly. Low GI foods are more filling and have a slower effect on you blood sugar levels. Look up glycaemic index or GI learn more about it. Uni of Sydney, Australia, is the main research unit as they test food for their glycaemic or glycemic index. A lot of people are going to Omar but this is not nutritionally adequate in the long term. Got questions, just ask. Cheers

Doctor Hansen, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Lymphedema in 2017. This after years and years of asking many doctors, what was going on with my legs swelling up and the skin changing. They just shrugged their shoulders and some put me on diuretics, which is counterproductive with Lymphedema. It's a horrible condition that basically takes all your time to keep under control (when at Stage 3). It's painful, messy, you can't find clothes to fit, wearing compression hurts, and people stare at you. Even getting in an out of the car is difficult. The problem is, most doctors don't even recognize lymphedema, and it's a very widespread condition with over 5 million sufferers. Since it's so seldom recognized researchers think it's probably more than 15 million sufferers in the US. If you are ever looking for something new to discuss on your channel I hope you'll look at Lymphedema.

Each month, starting on the first day, I fast fast for 3-5 days. This has transformed my life. This fasting rhythm is great for resetting any bad habits that remain or I acquire. I have adapted so well to fasting that I look forward to it during the month, imagining all the small resets I will do. Fasting is a great time to understand your body and your relationship to food. There are many layers to uncover. Each layer brings super wisdom as subtle processes become conscious and I break dozens of habits.

Fasting definitely works and it can really improve your health. When I was diagnosed with stage 4 Adenocarcinoma (lung cancer as you know), so initially placed interveneous chemo treatments. I tried a fasting method that was being studied in the UK at the time. I would fast for 48 hours prior to chemo treatment and then 8 hours after before eating. The first day of fasting was always the hardest but the second day not so much. By the time I could eat again you would think I would want to eat a lot but not really. I just ate a normal meal and was fine. I really credit the fasting to my success with battling cancer. I was diagnosed in October 2014, did chemical chemo for 9 months, was off the chemo for another 9 months before getting on the first of two trial drugs. The second one pretty much calcified and definitely shrunk the tumor mass in my lung. I was fortunate is a way. My cancer was caused by a malfunctioning RET gene. I am currently on Retevmo (Selpercatinib) which has received FDA approval. I just take 4 capsules per day, 2 morning 2 evening and I am good. Now, I should work the fasting back into all of this! Thanks so much for covering this topic in depth. Good stuff!

It is almost a year since I started IF 16/8 two meals a day, with a moderate keto diet. As far as I am concerned, I will continue this type of eating and living for the rest of my life. It helped me beat prediabetes, and it may have made my osteoporosis better since my bones do not hurt anymore and I am as active as when I was in my 30s, and I am 66. My mood and anxiety along with the stress caused by my work and personal issues are also improved. It is just so natural for me, I do not get very hungry anymore. To be honest, I never had any eating or weight problems, except for those mentioned above. For me, it is the natural way to eat and I am very alive and satisfied.

Wow, this is so complex. I’ve lost 22 pounds over the last 12 months (age 59) by using Time restricted eating ( what I’ve known as Intermittent fasting). I’ve followed Dr Jason Fung and Dr Sten Eckberg and have learned a lot about this style of eating. There is no calorie counting but rather it’s about choosing foods that don’t raise your insulin too much. It’s pretty easy and super effective. This all sounds quite tedious and burdensome. Check out those Dr’s too for a simpler take on IF.

Thank you Dr. Hansen!!! I'm happy to see a doctor speak up regarding real nutrition, good eating habits and how they both directly effect our overall health and prevention of chronic disease and poor metabolic health. Over-eating, constant eating and highly processed, nutrition-void foods are the primary causes of high levels of chronic diseases in Western society. There is no doctor that can prescribe a magic pill for good health. People need to take responsibility for their own health BEFORE they are diagnosed with a chronic disease or illness. I just wish more doctors were educated in nutrition and then worked harder to guide their patients toward healthy lifestyles rather than simply prescribing another pill as a band-aid, which current events are proving still can't save you.

Very interesting. THANK YOU for well explained fasting. I’m a 69 year old female, hashimotos, asthmatic, sleep apnea, HBP, pushing the needle towards type 2 diabetes, been told, fatty liver exists after gallbladder was removed in 2012. Fatty liver wasn’t explained back in 2012. I started 20:4 intermittent fasting June 30, 2022. 5’6” 215 lbs Today, august 6th- 201 lbs Labs for cholesterol ( cholesterol managed by meds) showed improvement after 2 weeks on IF A1c showed a baby step reduction in that first 2 weeks Appetite completely dropped from grazing and late night binging My feasting: 2-6pm. My fasting: 6 pm -2pm 20 hours later I joined Dy Ann Parham three fatigue week support group to jump start I had long Covid from March 2020. Bed ridden a majority of the three years. With the help of my pulmonologist switching my inhaler to trelegy. Putting me on short term steroids I went from sheer exhaustion to riding my cruiser bike 8 miles m-f, resting sat/sun My recovery is a combo of IF and breathing better with inflamed lungs being managed. I went through being tempted to eat at night but resisting with support from IF group and decaf coffee. ( I’ve always drank my coffee and tea black) I was abused as a preteen throughout high school and used foods to bury my shame. My pulmonologist is a male and he listened to my story, validated me, encouraged IF. He looked at body, mind and trauma to treat me. SHOCKING, a male actively listened to me. ( males have never been safe people to me) Cardiologist-female told me to get over my past what’s done is past - get exercising Female GP a bit more sympathetic but her response to my fatigue was to force exercise. Didn’t support long Covid because my male GP at the time I was sick refused to test for Covid. I was sick for 5 weeks. He told me I had the flu, I never recovered. I know my body. It was Covid. I suppressed my most memories until 2018 when I recovered from a craniotomy. PTSD reared it’s painful head flooding me with shame memories. Mother, deceased at 96 in 2020, normalized my fathers behavior when I told her some recall at the age of 28 with my first female child that I refused to leave alone with my father. She responded with fathers look at their daughters as the young wife they married and never mentioned my abuse again. Also thought I was being a drama queen to not allow my father to be alone with my daughter. Father never accountable. I had 5 brothers and had to pretend nothing happened to me. Now this is not a poor me story because I feel empowered with IF. I am not using food to bury my broken heart. I’m using food to heal my body which is healing my emotions. I write poetry to express my memory uprising. I have been under a psychiatrist care from my late 30s and just relayed my stories to her this year. I spent all those years trying to manage daily panic attacks and raise my 2 children alone and fend off my narcissistic mother. This is my self awakening to freedom story that I am honestly able to share. One of my poems 20:4 Intermittent fasting, is it just another fad? My as well try it it can’t be that bad. You train when to eat, you train when to not, It’s science, Its discipline, Or so it appears, Then the Magic emerges, first impressions disappear. It’s no longer ritualistic Or written in stone, This is my lifestyle I create what my body and mind need With support, never alone. There’s a universe of microscopic chatter that brings homeostasis within Molded by mindfulness the freedom begins Freedom to pause, Freedom to abandon old food laws, Freedom to walk through locked doors in my mind. Freedom to release what was hidden, Freedom to leave it behind. Freedom to find where I got lost, Freedom to fully understand what it cost. Freedom to embrace the old self With loving care, Freedom to find empowerment That was waiting for this moment for me to share. Intermittent fasting is a powerful healing tool. Thank you Miss DY Ann for providing this school.

After hearing the science of it, its starting to seem like fasting is just a good way to get the most out of the food you eat. In an era of abundance, we have all this food available, so the next stage is to regulate and manage our intake.

Excellent advice, it would be perfect if we could announce this daily on the morning news to the whole country. I'm very concerned people have totally forgotten how to take care of their own health. Thank you so much for bringing us back to reality. You know back in the 1960s we didn't call it fasting. We called it normal eating...no one ate at night or you had no food for tomorrow! 😆

If you look at old 'snaps' from the '40's, a fat person was rare and was spoken of as having a glandular problem. Food was rationed. 5'7" 132 lbs 87 years old. Very little exercise due to joint disease. 16/8 or 14/10.

I’ve been a night shift worker for 22 years. What do I do? I eat around 3 a.m., I’m always tired, and yes, I take Armour Thyroid and get no sun. Suggestions? I can’t work days as there are no openings so that’s out.

My first attempt at intermittent fasting (5 years ago) was a plunge the Fast-5 (consume calories for 5 consecutive hours daily) diet. The first day I experienced hunger, but I stuck with it By the third day, I was in a comfortable routine. After losing a few pounds, I expanded to 6-8 hours per day and adhere to it for 4 to 5 days each week. My impetus for trying the diet was an elevated A1C and I was warned that I was destined for a diagnosis of Type 2 DM. That has not occurred.

Awesome video presentation Dr. Hansen ! I’ve heard a few individuals discuss some basic principles of practicing intermittent fasting, but none of them have been this detailed, practical, understandable, or evidence-based as your presentation here! You are admirably succinct as well. I also am refreshed to see you’re not trying to sell a product to the audience! I will share this video treasure with others including my patients who wish to learn more about this topic.

Have been doing intermittent fasting and making Vitruvin Health anti-aging supplement for over a year, and I could say that people who don't believe in longevity would still support those of us who do, coz after all it's NOT just a life, but it's OUR LIFE and we couldn't restore it once it's gone. 😇

23:1 has always worked best for me, and that small eating window is at night, but that's also works best for me personally (I've worked a lot of graveyard shifts and prefer that, but that's just how I do best). Typically though I wake up mid to late morning and make sure to get a lot of outdoor time in the Sun when available, so I'm not quite a night owl, just too much energy.
