Note: The memory on Ryzen didn't want to clock higher than 2666 but I was able to hit 3200 with another kit using different dies (after the video was made of course) so for now I'll be using those modules to ensure we squeeze the most performance out of Ryzen

Whats the difference like on the stock clocks between these two and how does something like OW affect these numbers, i'm a fan of the AMD platform as a whole so i'm trying to tell if ryzen is actually worth the upgrade at this point, i assume you'll also do a similar video when the R5's arrive as those are going to be quite popular

THANK YOU for a real fucking test. The LTT video was doing stupid shit like comparing the 1800x on Veryfast preset to a 7700k on Ultrafast preset and then insinuating Ultrafast was a more intensive preset... the dumbest shit I have ever seen. No one in their right mind would buy either an i7 or 1700/1800x and use veryfast or faster. They did no tests on fast or faster presets, which are most probable settings, and no apples to apples comparisons for presets. It's like they had no idea what they were doing. ....just thanks for a real test man.

This video was all framerates and performance hits on gaming. Not a single word about how it handled the video output, which is what streamers would actually come to this video for. For that reason it's kind of useless to a lot of people looking for actual streaming setup advice. What I would've like to see is how well the videos were actually streamed, and maybe even some examples of x264 encoding at higher bitrates like ones used in recordings (maybe around 10-15kbps)

good test, but I feel like almost all streamers are more worried about dropped frames on their stream as opposed to what FPS they're playing at, so that should've been included IMO. Also, 1080p60 at 3500 bitrate is unreasonable, especially with twitch's recent update that allows up to 6000, so that probably should have been the tested bitrate.
@spencercarruth9706
@spencercarruth9706 7 жыл бұрын
Are you put of your mind? Most people watch streams on their phones or have had internet which is why higher bitrates can actually be a negative for most people. The quality difference between 3500 and 6000 will not be that noticeable trust me.
@SeeMzFTW
@SeeMzFTW 7 жыл бұрын
Spencer Carruth quality options exist for a reason, and twitch also just extended quality options to all users. So there really is no downside to a high bitrate. Not to mention in previous versions of twitch where non-partners didn't have quality options, 3500 bitrate would still be less than ideal so your point doesn't really make sense.

In general, games popular for streaming are not taxing enough to get a proper stress reading on either CPU. AAA titles have the ability to stress the system for this type of data comparison. As for what CPU gives the viewer a better experience, Ryzen has proven to be superior, not that many Intel CPUs can't do a fine job of it, in that category so testing on that end would be moot.

Think it should be noted that this test is strictly for gaming performance while streaming and does not, in any way, show streaming quality while gaming. I see people shitting on the LTT video based on their misunderstanding of the difference in purpose of the two tests. The two videos DO NOT test the same thing and should not be compared to each other. Instead they should be compounded as they are two parts of the bigger picture. Gaming performance while streaming: Intel > AMD Streaming performance while gaming: AMD > Intel

I'm not claiming to know why one outperforms the other in specific tasks, I'm not educated enough to make any such claims. While Linus made a video for streamers that game. I didn't like the hate that Linus was getting from gamers for a solid set of benchmarks made for streamers.

I have a 6700K (4.8Ghz) - And there is no way you can stream a CPU intensive game with the Intel i7 at fast, without insane frame skips - It would be a freaking slideshow for the viewer.. :) If you wanna stream in super high quality - Build a Ryzen 1700 stream PC, with low end GPU - And use Capture card (non 144hz montior support on gamePC because of monitor cloning) or Moonlight to send the screen output to stream PC.. ONLY way to do it, without any real performance hit ingame. :-)

The Linus video is complete bullshit. The only thing it proves is that x284 is the superior choose for encoding. He never showed apples to apples settings between any of the intel or amd chips. He was showing things like the 1800x on veryfast, and 7700k on superfast. The superfast setting is WORSE not better, but he didnt realize that some how. Also, no streamer with these chipsets are going to use those settings, it would be a waste of their CPU. They would most likely use fast (like Kyle did here) or faster settings. Which Linus didnt even test.
@sirjynx3041
@sirjynx3041 7 жыл бұрын
Yes the Linus video is a trashcan of bad information. In short, as long as the streamer isnt dropping frames, you wont notice any difference in quality as a viewer between the two chips using the same settings. So which ever CPU best handles the settings, would be the better experience.
@Arudis4x
@Arudis4x 7 жыл бұрын
Tiago Pinto Yah it did. It compared same settings on both chips using different encoders as the benchmark. Some people just didn't pay enough attention to the graphs. It also shows the quality differences of each encoding scheme which is where he drew his conclusions from. The x.264 looks the best for viewers. Quicksync looked like ass.

A large portion of partnered streamers on twitch stream at 720p60 using "medium" preset at about 3500 - 6000kbps. Very few actually streams at a higher resolution and anyone who does uses dual pc setups. I feel like it would be more a way more accurate "real world" scenario to test the settings most people would use instead of 1080p60 which is a bit excessive for the majority. I really hope this doesn't come off bad or anything, i like the concept of the video!

As a small-time streamer the thing that interests me is not the impact to to the performance of the game while streaming, but rather the performance of the stream itself. I may have missed whether or not you mentioned it, but what were the dropped frames looking like on both CPUs? Watching your browser window on the BF1 test it looked like you were dropping a ton of frames. Currently I use a dedicated capture/streaming PC to offload the work from my gaming machine because I've only got a 3rd gen i5 in it. I'm looking at building a new PC and would like to be able to have a one-PC solution.

+Cral e *So how good a cpu can overclock on average isn't a factor in whether or not you should buy it?* Of course it is, when you can actually overclock the CPU out of the box, with the same costs. That's not the case here though. You can't overclock the 7700k at all, heck you can't even make it boot to windows without a cooler. And that will cost you up to 80-90$ if you want to go to 5.0ghz, and I'm not even sure you can do that without delid. Also, the cheapest z170 mobo is 150$. So, you are already running 130$ more than the R7 costs. But even with that said, the R7 1700 system performs better when streaming even though it costs 130$ less. If that's not a stomp from AMD, then I don't know what a stomp looks like. Care to pain me a picture?

I don't know why anyone should buy i7 now. A Ryzen 1700 is more than capable of running games and doing major multi-threading tasks flawlessly. Given it measure about 10-15 FPS drop in some games, but these are not running on Vulkan API, and nor has it received the proper BIOS updates. However, for that 15FPS increase in i7 7700K, people are paying $30 more, for a processor that doesn't have good multi-threaded performance. If you are going to just build a gaming PC its fine., but ask yourself this, will you never work on it? If the answer is YES, then go for Ryzen.

Even though the difference in hardware is drastic, when my friend streams, (and he and I both stream a game on Twitch called War Thunder), his stream is SO MUCH clearer than that of anyone else really. It really is incredible to see it so clear on a stream. And him obviously having better hardware his frames were much better than mine, I tend to hang around 120 while streaming, and he hangs around 200 regardless of streaming or not. (We both stream at 720p 60fps btw with a bit rate of 3500). It really is a shocking difference. (His 1700X btw is at 4.0ghz and my 6600K is at 4.3, both of our GPUs have factory OC's)

Ryzen didnt win actually. It showed if the game is more CPU intensive, Ryzen was better sometimes, but if it was GPU intensive, Intel still won. These were also all on ultra settings. I am sure if it was a CPU intensive game, lowering the settings a bit would equalized performance again. So what we can really conclude, is that unless you are a 1 game streaming, and no how if your game is more CPU or GPU intensive, it is kind of a wash. I would even dare say more games played by a variety streamer are more often GPU intensive anyway, which would show the Intel chip being of more value on average. But they are close enough it doesnt matter.

Not really asking for more content, I just know that you've got to make videos frequently to feed yourself, and I bet coming up with ideas all the time isn't too easy. Maybe like a follow-up video or something. Cheers, been watching for years

Great video Bit. Really would love to see a video of this with the 1800x or a 1700 oc to 4ghz, since from what I've seen my ryzen 1700 oc'd to 4.025ghz really really performs right with a 1800x in terms of benchmarking, at least at 3.8-3.9ghz with the stock cooler, which should be entirely possible.

I am a bit surprised to see so few games tested. (I know the time it takes to run the tests is far longer). Also, I dont know If I saw that right, you are capturing 4K, transcoding to 1080p, but you run games at 1080p and 1440p? Isnt that weird? I would assume the best test case is 1080p into 1080p (for minimal cpu load). and 4k into 720p for max cpu load. Also, you can stream 1080p / 60 FPS on 3500 upload? I am wondering if the stream was choppy, since thats a lot of data to fit into 3500 :D.

I'm build my 1700x this weekend and I'm definitely feeling confident it's going to be a beast for a stream only pc but I think what's great to take away from it how well a 4 core chip with 8 "logical" cores can handle these loads as a native 8 core does.

i have my first custom build using ryzen 7 1700 with 2x Rx 480 8gb graphics card. when i stream i still see pixelation on the stream side as a viewers. after playing with ingame settings the pixelation goes down a bit but still there. on obs i still get frame drops but not as much as my old i7 2600 did. the ryzen 7 1700 can perform the needs for a streamer without needing 2 computers to get the best quality. keep in mind my cpu is at 3.245hz and the gpus are at stock speed. i have yet to go higher in overclocking on the ryzen since im a noob at that kind of stuff. but even on streamers running two computers there is still pixelation so i see no sense running two comps.

Hey Bitwit, great video! I was wondering what is your opinion on what is a better CPU option for programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, 3D Max, AutoCAD and other graphics and 3D rendering software. I am in in a dilemma between Intel 7700k and Ryzen7 1700 (x). I wont be using the PC for gaming, maybe once in a while, but mostly I will be using it for work. Also I am thinking if pairing it with a GTX 1070 GPU. Let me know what you think, I highly respect you opinion.

Thank you VERY much for clarifying this because because ryzen was not getting the love that it deserved. It's obvious that 7700k has much more IOPS because of his frequency and is better for gaming, but ryzen r7 series excels at multitasking and betas much pricier intel processors. I would love to see 2 more tests. One when u compare these two in Crysis 3 because if I'm not wrong cryengine uses the potential of 8 cores. The other one is with a intel Xeon processor. For example Xeon E3-1245 v3 it costs about 200$ on ebay and I think it can do very well on a 1150 motherboard, or an Xeon E5-2690 for around 150-200$. I know I'm asking for much but love what you are doing and i believe you can make a great video about these 2 topics. Thank again for a great video!

If you're willing to put the time in, I'd be interested in seeing a quality comparison of 1700, 7700K, and both Nvidia and Quicksync hardware encoders. LMG did a video on it but they used the speed preset for Quicksync instead of the quality and the 6000Kbps comparison was thrown in at the end during the summary. It just felt incomplete the way they did it and I'd be interested in having another person test it.

One thing this video doesn't compare is the QUALITY of the video feed while streaming. Linus Tech Tips provides a nice comparison video that would argue that, even though the 7700K gives more frames to the user, streaming with it provides a worse experience for the viewer of the stream than the RYZEN chip.

@Bitwit please help me understand something... Online I can consistently find a 1800X for $45 (AU$) less than the 7700k and the AMD contains the wraith spire cooler while the 7700k does not. So with that, I struggle to see why the 1700 is used in this comparison? And if this was changed to the 1800X would unequivocally choose the 1800X or are there areas where the intel chip would still shine enough to be considered? Also I think it'd be great if you mentioned the cooler inclusion, intel optimised benefits and features (I assume AMD is still lacking behind (but catching up to) intel with useful features, polish and OS integration). An example of this I was thinking about booting from NVMe drives, thunderbolt, supported memory, etc.

A little more information would be helpful here, but I think what Kyle is mainly getting at here is 7700k vs 1700 given a gaming and gaming + streaming/encoding workloads at the same time. And not is it truly better for steaming which is the other side of the coin. The title may be ambiguous, but how else would you say a short summary in your title without being long as hell.

I just built a PC with GTX 1070 and Ryzen 1800x. Came from a i7 4790 - GTX 970. The framerate is the same, sometimes drops lower than before. This is really weird IMO, and what's even more weird is that everytime i try to stream while playing pubg/rocket league, the computer kinda gets black screen. It's still on, but i can't do anything and need to force shut it down. This happens aswell when i do 3d stuff in photoshop. None of this happend on my older pc :(

1080p and 1440p are not resolutions people stream at... even the biggest twitch users use 900p 60fps now. i think 99.99 percent of streamers are also not partnered with twitch so a 3500kbps stream is out of reach. this test is not super accurate for current day streaming. maybe when x265 streaming and 1080p streaming with higher bitrates this will be more relivent. the 1700 would absolutely smoke the 7700k in these tests. but this isnt true today.
