There's a lot of questions about dog parks and issues surrounding them, so I thought I would rant out my thoughts about dog parks.
If you still want to take your dog there, please update your knowledge on canine behaviour by watching my "understanding dog body language" videos

I've found different times at my local dog park work better. NEVER go on on Weekend evenings. It's filled with dog owners who haven't taken their dogs out all week and then let them loose in the park to get all of that pent up energy out in one go. I usually go in the morning if I do go and I walk a few laps to not only wear out some energy from my own dogs but to judge the dogs inside the park before we go in. Weekday morning crowds I have found to be the best.. The dogs are always more relaxed and actually social instead of bullies. Not a regular anymore though. So long as my dogs are friendly I'd rather go hiking with them or something.

Ebonyfox2 Great advice. Very true! Most if not a majority of the Monday-Friday 9-5 crowd do not properly exercise or train their dogs. They think weekend dog park exposure is enough for lack of time during the week... some people should not be allowed to own dogs

+Kristin Crestejo (Modern Canine Training) I saw your video on dog behavior and actually wonder of maybe you can pin point my dogs behavior. Here is how she acts when she sees another dog/person (maltese-yorkie mix, 2 yrs old). She has ears up, alert. Tail in a everyday position, waging. Lunging with a deep growl. Weight placed on the front legs. However when we came up to a dog to meet up she hid behind me and showed fear. Any ideas? Thanks!

Paul Luckett Absolutely! You know what has also helped my 14 week old blue heeler puppy? Having a couple of friends who are well behaved. Studies have shown that puppies learn from watching well behaved dogs. In other words, these dog parks with dogs who have horrible manners are a waste of time

I took my dog to a dog park once, I ended up taking him to the park that was empty after seeing all the dogs on the one side. It kind of scared me as this is my first dog in a long time and was his first time out in a no leash environment. i had a good experience but there was no other dogs in the dog park i was at. i currently take him to my brothers house so he can play with my brothers dog in his back yard which i feel so much more comfortable with and the dogs both sleep like they partied all night after the play dates. Thanks for the info. real helpful for me.

I used to take my girl to a park once a week to try and 'socialize' her. she gets very anxious around stranger dogs, and at the time, I thought I was helping her by taking her there. over time, as I did more research about dog behaviour, I learned how terrible dog parks are. but despite that, I still kept taking her every now and then, once a month maybe. I was more careful with who she interacted with and how, but we still kept going. then one day a very rude and excited staffy showed up, and because my dog seems to love staffy's, she started trying to play with it by chasing him around, then he tried to rough house with her, and she got very scared and ran to me and then showed her teeth at him telling him to go away. the staffy didn't take this very well, and attacked her. injuring her. we are extremely lucky that I was standing next to her at the time, as I threw my arm between them just as the staffy launched at my dogs neck. it wasn't smart, but it saved her life. the staffy took a chunk out of my arm and the owner ignorantly said that my dog started it.... excuse my language, but I fucking hate dog parks after that. I will never go to one ever again, and I encourage others to stay away as well.

It's not so different from kids at school. Every parent is different. Some kids never have to follow rules, some get abused and often become bullies themselves, some follow bullies, some have just been raised differently, though not necessarily worse. No matter how well you raise your kid, he will be surrounded by kids whose parents believe something different.

I wish people could watch this video before going to a dog park. My dog was super friendly at the dog park, but as we started getting to know other dogs and hanging out with them regularly, he started to exhibit signs of packing and got aggressive with dogs that would wander into our area to greet the humans. We stopped meeting up with this group of people and unfortunately, they called me some names, but I'm sorry, I don't want my dog to be aggressive and pick up their dogs' bad habits. It literally took almost 8 months of not hanging out with them for him to change somewhat and now he is fine most of the time, but there are days when I notice he's just not behaving and acting up and we have to leave or go to a private pen. Kristin, you are spot on about different dogs coming from different households and different rules. My dog is in training and I try to maintain control while at the park. Yes, I want him to be a dog, but I also need for him to be responsive to me when it calls for it. Other dogs will come running up to him face to face and start licking his face as a sign of greeting which is ok 99% of the time, but on his certain "bad" days, he will snap at them and the owner will look at me like my dog is aggressive. Or the dogs that cannot take a hint that another dog does not want to play. My friends all give me grief when he stands toe to toe with a stronger dog like a rottweiler, pit bull, great dane, etc....Tail not wagging, ears up, eyes large....sorry, that's not a sign to play, it's a sign that something is about to go down and I'd to get my dog out of that situation asap, don't tell me he's playing! I know my dog! Thank you for taking the time to speak on this issue. Now, if there is a way to make people believe that chasing is a natural instinct, and their child running around the dog park, is not only unsanitary (barefoot bandits), but dangerous as dogs are predatory animals. Gosh this drives me nuts! Or, when they bring their bikes, scooters, segways, hoverboards...and they wonder why the dogs are chasing, nipping, barking at them.

Andy Phillips Yeah. I've been training dogs all my life. Owned many that all lived to 13-17 (impressive since I have always had HUGE dogs) and fostered heaps too, not to mention how many dog rescues I've volunteered at. Some dog parks suck, it depends on the area and specific dogs at that park. But a lot of them are actually pretty good, and fun for your dog. If they're well trained, desexed, wormed, vaccinated, etc. and you supervise your dog, there's not much that can happen. Maybe it's different in areas with a lot of people, but I live in an area where there are maybe 5-10 dogs in one park MAXIMUM, and often times they're repeat visitors. There also aren't any doggy day cares in my area. With the logic this girl is using, you may as well keep your dog away from all other dogs.

Ghastly Gambit I mean, I've seen a few dog fights happen before and its pretty nasty, but even then it only happens like once a year and its usually the result of stupid owners. Most of the time you can see the fight coming from a mile away. But oh well, atleast i know i wont get my dog into any fight. Aslong as the owners are competent, a fight usually doesn't break out.

Been going to a park for over a year now. The people/dogs are regulars too and usually considerate. Lately my dog has 5-10 very large dogs on her so bad we can't even walk in. The people used to call their dogs back when someone was coming in. Because they know us, they no longer bother. It has turned into a nightmare! My girl is just trying to push through the pack surrounding her, and immediately gets nipped and bit by them. I try getting her away from them by moving across the field, and it turns into a bullying pack mentality that follow and chase her! The owners used to see my frustration and get their dogs away for a minute, but not the last 2 times! She was getting bitten hard by a pack surrounding her and was trying to defend herself against them all at once! I was jumped on and nearly knocked over, my coat and clothing was mud from head to toe, she had saliva and drool all over her body in less than a minute! Not one person scolded their dogs or helped me while this went on! I finally screamed and pushed a few of them away. As we tried to leave, they were still biting her rear quarters! When I got near the exit and grabbed my keys, 2 owners asked why I was leaving!!! I said "this is ridiculous, too much bullying!" One told me my dog is a tough girl she handles herself fine. Another told me my dog enjoys this type of play!!!!! Umm, no I said. She can play 1 on 1 or 2 on 1 fine, but she doesn't enjoy having 8-10 dogs bite her at once! I left immediately for the first time, and haven't been back. I cried in the car, because I saw her face and she looked relieved to be taken out! I felt so guilty for subjecting her to that. The other problem I've noticed is people bring their little dogs into the big dog area, since there's no little dogs there to play with. Some are used to playing with bigger dogs and fine. Others are very fearful and hide on chairs or bite from fear. The owners of the small dogs expect others to leave when their little dog is afraid! I witnessed a couple trying to bring their large dog in. They asked the owner of a Jack Russell if they could please take him to the proper area, since their dog is too rough with small dogs. The girl refused, and said her Jack Russell wasn't going anywhere, that's his friends there. So the others left! A week later I heard her Jack Russell broke his leg. Not sure where but wouldn't be surprised if it was there. Since these last few bad experiences, I've stayed away, and we've been enjoying hikes together and Frisbee just fine!

Kristin, I appreciate your perspective. I can tell that Luna really trusts you. She is precious. What I have observed in a few dog parks is that the owners are the ones to watch for because the dog feeds off of their energy. I still take my dog because she needs some diversion. It would be cruel for me to keep her cooked up at home. But I gauge the situation.
@rovan26
@rovan26 7 жыл бұрын
soniakiwi Wow I really agree the dogs feed off owner's energy! I see it all the time. Calm, confident owners usually have the same dogs. When a person is nervous or gets overly excited and upset when dogs are playing or barking because they are anticipating the worst, their dog starts acting fearful or hiding by them. Then when the dog shows fear, either other dogs start bullying or the dog bites in fear. A couple I know bring their husky. The guy is pretty laid back and calm, the girl on edge biting her nails and flinching about every thing. When only the guy brings the dog, the husky is fine. When the girl is there, he gets in a fight EVERYTIME! Usually another dog approaches, the husky looks at her and she's already upset, then her dog attacks another dog, or gets attacked. It's like he senses he has to protect her, or bites out of fear!

I used to love dog parks, however I had a bad experience with my own dog. I was giving attention to another dog that we didn't know, and my dog ran over and attacked him. No skin was broken. To be fair, we were on the dog park side that was for being alone. The other side is the side that everyone else uses. My dog is a great dane, and he's never been aggressive, even after this scowl. I also did not / have not go back in fear of my dog actually being "that" dog.

I recently started working at a vet clinic and there's a joke that a lot of the times when dogs come in with random injuries they were just at a dog park and blah blah blah lol Very good points! I took my old dog very passive and easy going bit not socialized to a dog park once and when we went to let her go in the pen where they'd run around unleashed her whole body language screamed "nope! I do not want to go in there!" so we went for a hike instead.

I completely agree with what you say, eventually something scary happens at the dog park. Alot of people just don't read dog behaviour very well and don't see how stressed the dogs are. I do want my dog to be able to play with other dogs because she really enjoys it and it's great exercise. So what I did was go to a supervised dog park in order to meet other owner/dog pairs that were a good match for me & my dog. Then I invited them to come to my yard for private play sessions. This has worked out very well for us, Tess and I have both made some new friends. This is the first time I've posted here so I'd like to take the time to thank Ms Crestejo for putting so much info here, I've learned alot. Thanks

My dog is unsocialized and I've been working on getting her used to other dogs and able to be calm around them. I try to stand outside of a small dog park near my house and train and desensitize her to dogs. She's actually usually fine with other dogs once she's introduced, but she plays a bit rough so I would only let her play with a dog her size or bigger. That dog park though is usually either empty or has no more than one or two dogs in it, so it's not too overwhelming for her if I take her in. Even though it's extremely rare for anything to happen, I still have my dog in a muzzle around other dogs because it's my responsibility to keep my dog from hurting another dog if ever a fight was to break out. Oh she's a German shepherd by the way. Well, do you have any advice for socializing a dog to guests and to other dogs? Or if you have videos on the subjects I'll watch them haha.

I have a German Shepherd i train him at home and we go on 1 hour walk everyday, but every time he sees a dog he gets very fixated on other dog and just whines like he wants to play but i m scared of dog parks. how can i socialize him if not dog parks, and i sent him to petsmart day care n they give him timeouts during 6hrs of daycare he only plays like 30 min top most.

I have a rescue dog I got when he was 7 months old. Someone attempted to drown him and that is when the cops were called. Who knows what happened before that? Anyway, after we got use to eachother, I started taking him to a small local dog park for years. Never had any problems. He overcame his fear of water there, his confidence soured and got a little more use to men (he's been fearful of most men). He loves other dogs and always just wants to play. He's 7 now. I've gotten to know the regulars. A new couple came one day with this big muscular dog. I'm not a dog behavior specialist but something was off. As soon as the dog entered through the gate he stopped, stared at my pup. I started walking toward my dog when I saw the other dog crouch... his movements reminded me of a female lion on the hunt. I yelled to my dog who was busy running around not paying attention. My dog started walking towards me but the other dog darted super fast and slammed into my dog so hard he had grass stains. The dog bit my dogs ear (not totally piercing through) before my boyfriend and the couple could pull the other dog off of my dog. "I don't know why he did this. He's so friendly" said one of the owners. Before I could finish looking my dog over to make sure he wasn't seriously hurt, they had hussled out of the gate. I didn't go back. We go to forest preserves now and hike instead. My dog loves other dogs though, so I need to figure something out so he can play. I went to a dog daycare but I didn't like the way the dogs were treated by the staff. Forcibly pulling dogs away from their owners, putting on muzzles when some of the dogs started acting aggressive because they were scared and didn't know those people. I don't really trust other people with my dog.

A daycare is just for the social part if you cannot do it yourself with friends or meeting dogs on a walk and having playdates. For a young dog, I would recommend obedience class, puppy socials and then daycare once a week for a couple months to ensure good social skills.

Kristin Crestejo , is Luna from a working bloodline or a show dog bloodline? I am getting a border collie (really excited, my first dog! Finally got my mother to overcome her fear) and I live in Ireland, where Border Collies are predominantly sheepdogs and I would prefer to get a puppy from a show dog bloodline as opposed to working as I feel like a working dog would be harder to train, what are your thoughts on this... What do you suggest I do? , Thanks -Colin

gamecentral79 No, Luna is from working lines. The show lines I find that the dog have the instinct and drive but they have no idea what to do (if that makes sense). They are hyped up and have incredible endurance but when you work them, they don't have the natural instinct. I swear they are trying to breed it out. If I were you, stay away from the show lines. AKC and CKC will ruin the breed. Border Collies aren't meant to be pretty. They are meant to have a wonderful temperament and incredible work ethic/skills.

+Paul Smith I totally believe in teaching dogs to cope with stress. Stress is part of living, it's impossible to shelter our dogs, kids and family from stress, so we need to teach them that stress won't kill you, it's not that bad, you have choices that can make stress go away - choose wisely. #1 - stop wanting your dog to meet doggy friends. This was the turning point for me and luna, I wanted her to play and romp with dogs cause she loved it, but it changed and I needed to stop putting my wants on her. This helped A LOT with her rehabilitation. #2 - Management. We need to know what triggers the dogs stress and work at threshold (the point where the dog can still cope - minimally stressed to no stress). #3 - counter condition

I adopted an antisocial australian cattle dog pup back in July who had never been socialized with any other dogs before in her entire 1 year of life. I had no local friends with dogs to help me, but I knew I needed to resolve the problems as soon as possible. I have no money lying around to pay a doggie daycare! So I decided to take her to a dog park. Since we have been going to our near by parks, my puppy has learned to play, have zero to no fear of other canines we meet, and how to interact in social situations. You said it yourself, it is natural dog instinct for other dogs to jump on one another at parks. But unless the dog is striking for the neck and aiming to shake your pup's scruff until the life is shaken out of it, it is all in proper socialization. All dogs aught to learn how to defend themselves, or at least stand up for themselves. And hiding them away from social interaction is not the way to do that. I'm all for doggie daycares as well, but VERY few people have that kind of money to toss around willy-nilly. TL;DR Dog parks allowed my overly submissive, excitement-peeing puppy to become a confident, playful, and well-socialized dog. People are so quick to judge dog parks, but in my humble opinion, parks do in fact do some good towards the well-being of a confident and happy pet.

I personally love dog parks how ever they can be very dangerous for your dog. You should always be watching your dog at all times and watch other dogs that enter the dog park. A good dog teacher can spot a trouble dog and simply go to another area of the dog park or if the park super small they can just leave. Like my Ruby she will play and play all day how ever she does not like snippy dogs at all. So if see a snippy dog or a dog that is kind of skittish I talk to that owner real quick let them know about my dog and we can work together to keep our dogs apart. I would love to see you put your prejudice about dog parks aside and do a dog park safely video. Because there are things people can do to keep their dog safer at dog parks. I will be making one here soon myself, just waiting for everything to be really green so the video looks good. Would love your input.

I am a blessed mom with 2 amazing canine children (and 2 wonderful cats) My adult dog was adopted from a shelter a couple of years ago. She was trained at the women's jail through a program. I have taught her even more since. My puppy was never even walked on a leash or potty trained before I adopted him from a neighbor's relative last month. He is the CUTEST boy in the universe and I am so proud to be training him 100% positive reinforcement. He is so smart and loves to learn. He and my adult dog are inseparable. They train together for best results. I am still a newbie trainer but I work with them everyday. They are my best friends and in fact my Emotional Support Animals. I do not take my babies to the dog park. I have had an issue with those places for years. Thank you for your great videos. I will train them to "bang your dead" starting tomorrow. They both know sit pretty and down. In fact I race them to see who goes down faster. I think they are going to learn this one very quickly. Thanks again and have a blessed night.

FOR REAL. We go to conservation areas where the owners are more into a lifestyle with their dogs instead of just "treating" them once a week to a walk at the "dog mall" - so much more USEFUL info for us, great tips about where else to take her, and she gets privacy to learn and explore while also meeting the odd dog one on one. Thats my life pro tip.

I'd agree, my young boxer went and got attacked by several huskies at once, it took me years, I mean years to get her back to normal. Even now, we really have to plan her initial meetings with friends dogs to make sure she will be okay. But once she knows them, she has a great time. My boxers story is exactly like Lunas.

100% Agree! I have 2 dogs, one is all but deaf so she gets really nervous around new dogs since she can't ear any sound their making so she can only tell where a dog is if she can see it. My second dog is dog-selective, he likes certain dogs so I wouldn't consider him full blown dog aggressive. However if I were to even walk past a dog park he'd lose it, to take him inside one would end with with a dog fight, or multiple. I have no doubt he would walk up to the closest dog and tear into it without really thinking. I'm content with just hiking and walking alone with no other dogs but my two.

I go to dog parks with my three dogs all the time. I totally understand that a lot of people take their aggresive dogs into parks or sometimes there are just wrong situations that can end up bad. What I always do because I also am scared sometimes just to bring my dogs but I watch cautiously how the other dogs are and if i see any suspicion of aggression in someone's dog I either take my dogs to the complete opposite side or take them out of the dog park until I feel like it is safe. I only take my dogs to the dog park because they need a place to release all their energy. They have not been loose lease trained yet so I can't have them outside of a fenced facility yet /: I understand where you are coming from though! Some people do take their unfriendly dogs or dogs with behavioral problems which they should probably stay away from dog parks until their dogs are better with the issues.

I agree. I have an insecure dog, and dog parks are the worst for us. But we still have to go there, because it's the only way my dog can run off leash in this city (he's a greyhound mix and there are wild rabbits everywhere). We try to go there late at night when there are no other dogs though, and so far it has worked well for us. He gets to sniff around and run without distractions. I'm always very aware and cautious of any other dogs there might be though, and if it seems like a strange dog is very submissive or young, we don't go there at all (my dog is bossy and dominant and I'm quite not quick enough to correct his behaviour manually). He has a few friends that we see regularly, so I don't think he needs to meet many new dogs all the time.

Totally agree. I have a dog to spend time with and share adventures with, to train and have a strong bond and relationship very few people in dog parks from my experience have any control over their dogs. Most owners stand and talk not even watching their dogs that is devaluing them as something important in dog's life. Very few can call their dog and have it come back straight away. Why would I want to risk my dog to a pack of bullies that's like taking my 5-year-old child and sending them unsupervised into a playground full of bullies?

I totally agree! The Dog Park is not ideal unless it's empty When I take my personal dogs and my client dogs to the dog parks in my neighborhood, I let them roam free because they have all bonded and I never take dogs that don't have the same compatible energy levels. The possessive dogs aren't allowed to go with another dog at all and require solo trips. Though in my city, there's this lovely dog park. 23 acres of beaches, trails, just gorgeous but I refuse to go without taking my 30 foot line and my most passive dog. I think the only reason my experience there was so positive was because of that 30 foot line and my dogs focus was more or less the water and his own toys. I would love to hear your opinion on dog beaches.

Taylor Dozier It's good you have rules of conduct to avoid trouble, but some are workarounds not solutions. Example: Taking your possessive dogs on solo trips to avoid trouble is good, but will not fix the root of the problem; the dogs possessive behavior. Example: Only taking the most passive dog to the dog park is only good for that one dog. What about working with your other dogs excited behavior, so they all eventually could join.

nic pik the more possessive dogs, I often work with them to lessen the problems and the sessions often go well. My issue is the owners don't have that same determination and are quite content with how their dogs are or say it cannot be changed. If I see the owner is willing then we work together until the problem is fixed. However, if that isn't the case then I try my best but I'm not with those dogs 24/7. Maybe just 3 hours at a time. A lot of the time, the dogs get really attached and present jealous tendencies when I interact with other dogs. example: putting their body between mine and the dogs, snapping at the other dog, nudging my hand away. The dogs who are excitable are allowed to go to the dog park with me. By passive, I meant easy going in the sense that they tolerate a lot of nonsense that puppies, children and other situations seem to present. A lot of the dogs I work with are comfortable with each other and we often all go down to the lakes and explore. We take pack walks, hikes and explore. 4-7 miles of walking at a time plus biking. However, I would love to hear how it would be possible to lessen the possessive nature of the select few in the pack.

Dear Kristin, I have seen many of your vids and I truly think that you are a pro, and the vids were highly informative. But in this case I would disagree. I am from Hungary, in our dog parks the rules on a big billboard, and most of the owners keep the rules (eg. Before entering, talk to the owners!). On the other hand I also can confirm that some of the owners come in, let the dog go and start checking their phones. My main rule is that if we are in the dog park I have to supervise my dog ALL the time, and be ready to intervene and to correct my dog anytime. But for me the dog park presence was an essential tool to resocialize my dog (rescued buddy, who lived in the streets as well), and modify his behavior. The result? He learned a lot, (1 year therapy, including schools and private lessons) and he is a happy dog in the dog park, playing, running, with good manner. BUT! There was a turning point during the therapy. We were about to enter to a dog park. The trainer was with us. Another dog was inside and I anticipated the rumble. I had to stop and think... We didn't go in. Finally I had to admit to the trainer that I AM afraid. It was about the 3rd month of the rehabilitation and Bill (my dog) still had the tendency to dominate, or even getting into wrestling (not bite, but pushing down the other). These experiences generated and anxiety inside of ME. Not bcs I was afraid, of stopping the fight, but bcs I was afraid what the other owner(s) would think about me, if my dog starts a conflict. So first I had to let go that anxiety, better trusting myself, and better trusting my dog, and do not care about the others opinion if my dog makes a mistake. Patience was the key. We got back to the training, I have gained my confidence, and Bill was ready to learn everything. Now we still visit the dog park, I do select when to go in or not. I check the pack and if there is obvious signs that there are to many dogs, or dominance problems I choose to walk away. But still a very cautious (step by step) way to get to used to other dogs helped me a lot, and made my dog happy and well socialized. I try to see not what is important for me or what my fears are, but what my dog's interests are. I had to modify my thinking, my emotions many times in order to serve my dogs' sake. :) Peace

I totally get what you're saying and have certainly seen many less than ideal dog park situations but, no offense, not everyone has the money to take their dog to a "reputable day care." I am 16 and I probably provide a majority of the care and exercise for my dog and we live right near the dog park. I stopped taking her there a while ago because of the situations described, but I would like her to socialize with other dogs, don't have the money for day care, and play with other dogs is naturally exhausting for a dog. My dog loves other dogs but i don't take her to the dog park because some of those dogs are bullies and she has some toy guarding problems. I think that a good option is to set up play dates for your dog at a neutral park with not many people or if you or them have a fenced yard. This way you can remove toys that can cause fights and work out training differences as well

Well... What you say is all true. All those things happens in dog parks. But most of the time bad things are predictable and are avoidable. As I see it bad things only happens with newbies or irregular visitors. Dogs who are get used to it are fine. And actually it is not that hard to make your dog to be accustomed to the place. But still i do not know, maybe one park is different from another. The park where I go has not so many dogs in it and everyone knows everyone. Newbies are cautious, they stay aside approaching step by step for a number of days until their dogs feel themselves comfortable. Fights happens and bully behavior happens but everyone is ready to stop it.

My take from one 4-5 min visit is that the dogs there are pretty rough. They were Bulldogs, German shepherds, etc. just not right for me. My dad takes me to doggie day care and it is real chill there and I get along with everyone there and we have good clean fun. No right or wrong answer; I just feel it's not for me.

At first I was thinking about that same thing, socialize my dog. But, my dog will only get so nervous and try to to escape. Since then I try to avoid other dogs. My GR is my first dog btw. Well, time has passed and now we can walk next to other dogs and ignore them but the other dogs always will bark at us, and they are freaking chihuahuas and snauzers and bullterrier mixes. I have the feel that my dog can harm them, but the owners are always looking at me like I am the one inciting the aggression. Hate that. That is precisely what trainers refer when they are talking about responsible ownership, get a hold of your freaking dog. Btw, my dog doesn't jump on my, or disrespect me in that manner, but with other people he is so obnoxious. Ahmmm, sugestions on what to do? (excuse my bad english)

I've taken every one of my dogs to parks (BMDS ) but only till they were bout a year old. after that they didn't seem to care for the parks, was their call. I only had one bad experience, a labradoodle for whatever reason was taking down my first berner,he was about 4 months at the time. I told the owner to grab his dog but he was too slow, ended up grabbing the dog myself. he was kinda pissed, but I looked even more pissed, he left. Like someone else said earlier, it's not the dog, it's the people I can't stand.

I have to respond. The reason I take my dog to the dog park and Not EVER EVER to a doggy day-care - is because doggy day-care's habitually remove your dog from your control - place your dog in a group of strangers.. and and so far as I can see - have no more knowledge of what subtle dog aggression looks like than many of the owners at dog parks. I went to 6 doggie daycares over the course of a week - and ALL of them wanted me to just Leave my dog with them... (and leave...)... and as I watched on the video feed - I watched a dog terrorize my (then) 7 month old bulldogge... he was hiding under the play equipment - he was running to the human who would walk purposefully away from him. This.. is not what I consider preferable - to a dog park. Where I can go - and I can watch - and I can get to know who the dogs are (and the people) and I can choose to leave... The dog park we attend is mostly populated with dogs all around the same age - my dog is now 10 months old... the older dogs pretty much ignore the younger dogs -and over the past few months - the younger dogs have all pretty much grown up together. Its not perfect - indeed - we all have very different ideas of what is acceptable and what is not... but I ALWAYS have the ability to get my dog - and leave... and that is not something someone can do with doggie day care.

I see what she's saying. I'm a dog trainer and personally hate dog parks but I bring Aspen to some dog parks, but at other parks I am constantly seeing dogs that give me the same reaction she's talking about. Luckily the park I go to has a small community of very well socialized dogs in it. I don't blame the dog for the bad behaviors, I blame the owners but yes not all dogs are meant for dogs parks but unfortunately too many people take them there anyways so going to a dog park is a risk so just be aware of your dog and other dogs in the park if you choose to go to one. I've also had bad experiences with day care facilities so unless I can be there I won't leave my dogs there, but that's just me. I take my dogs on hikes, they have play dates, or we go to the lake or the beach so they get to get out and experience the world.

(I don't know if I'm right or not) But I don't see why not. As long as it's safe, and your dog has a really reliable recall or they're on a long line/recall leash. I think the main issues with dog parks are the fact a lot of people don't know dog body language, or do not supervise their dogs well enough and let fights and bad behavior occur. If you're pretty much the only one it should be ok. I take my dog social dog to our local river bank which is a big paddock off leash area with a river/freshwater beach type thing. I feel good taking him there, I stay up the stream a little away from whoever else is there unless our dogs both seem politely interested in meeting. I would take him more but I feel a little unsafe taking him regularly as I'm a teenage girl and there are weirdos who park and sit in their cars there sometimes which is a little off-putting.

I do get the concerns. It's a hard place to control, lots of factors, etc. However, when taking into account people's socio-economic status one can not automatically assume every dog owner can afford to put their animal in a dog kennel. Which is why dog parks exist. I would love to see more awareness campaigns put on by positive dog trainers that kept this in mind. (i.e., posters of dog postures at the park, etc.). We just had a dog killed at a dog park two months ago in my region. Sad story. Dog kennels are a great solution for some, but not all so we should, in our multi-species society, ensure that all animals and people are set up for success at all income levels. I've been to dog parks where the owners are too busy socializing themselves to watch their own dogs and this certainly is a recipe for disaster.

good post. i train dogs in Japan and we have some nicely managed dog parks but i still only use them from outside the fences :-) - since i also train with a lot of dogs with (DA) dog aggression and high reactivity levels, and i work in crowded public places, i use muzzles a lot. my only comment regarding that is that i think ALL dogs should be conditioned to wear a muzzle without conflict. my "final exam" test is when a dog will comfortably eat, drink and take a nap when it is muzzled. - the reason is because a muzzled dog gives them extra "space" and people tend to avoid the dog rather than try and approach it. this helps desensitize the dog and prevent stressful eye contact from lookie loos - muzzles are NOT for vet visits, but unfortunately many people think they are. they can be great training tools when used properly. and used properly, i don't think they make the dog feel helpless or "bound" at all. and it certainly doesn't bother the military working dogs i work with either....but they are wearing muzzles for different training reasons //lol//

I tried to take my 5 month old Collie (Rough) to the county dog park in my area last week. As soon as we walked through the gate about 5 dogs came running over and were all over her. They were in her face, surrounding her, jumping on her... They were not being aggressive thankfully, but she was completely freaked out nonetheless. As for the owners, they were in a circle maybe 10-20 yards away talking and not one came over to help or get their dogs. I had to fight my way into the middle of them to rescue her and in the process I got dirty, disheveled, I could barely get back out of the gate with my girl because they were all over us. I had to squeeze through as tight as I could, trying to keep them all at bay, while my daughter was still stuck inside the park. So what happens, well when one of the owners finally came over because her dog had gotten through to the middle area with us, she had the actual nerve to make a comment to me about closing the gate behind me. No apologies for all the harassment or anything, just a snide comment.

But the last time it did not. She is a regular there too and we know these dogs. Some are big labs, Rotties and shepherds that play very rough! I left after 3 minutes the last time- no one helped me or apologized though we were both clearly upset. Haven't returned since.

It is terrible that people can be so irresponsible and not care at all that their dogs are harassing another dog or even human. I haven't been back to that dog park again since, we tried to go to a different one but I saw people allowing the same kind of things to happen to other dogs. I had our dog on the puppy side and another dog tried to actually get through the fence, snarling, growling and lunging and the ignorant owner had the nerve to tell me his dog was just being playful (can you believe that!). It's ignorant people that cause the problems with their dogs every time if you ask me.
@rovan26
@rovan26 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for responding! I agree 100%, it's the people who are inconsiderate or irresponsible. I can't blame the dogs when the owners don't know better! I tried a different park too. A smaller male whippet latched on to my dog humping from the minute we walked in. Others even commented that this would not be pretty! The woman, stood there in her pajamas (no joke, on New Years Day), and laughed the entire time, while my dog struggled to get away! She said, "he's just playing!!" It was so obvious my dog was unhappy and couldn't shake him off. After 5-10 min of this, I went over and pulled him off her. She left right after! Today, I actually tried my regular park after 2 weeks of not going. A regular text me letting me know which dogs were there, which was the regular pack that plays rough but she knows. As I pulled in, I saw the German Shepherd who kept bullying her last time I left. I calmly approached the fence with my dog and let them sniff from opposite sides. This other dog was already showing aggresion. I brought my dog in between 2 gates to allow them to calm down more, hoping the owners would all be considerate and grab their dogs so I could enter without being trampled. Not one did. Then the GSD did the same thing you described- viciously showing teeth, snarling, barking, trying to attack my dog through the fence!!! My dog was shocked and a little afraid. She barked back, and the dog got more insane. The entire time, the owner did NOTHING! She didn't call her dog back, put her on a leash, restrain her, NOTHING! I put the leash back on my dog and took her to the small side that was empty, and my friend brought her 2 dogs over to play with her. The entire time, the GSD was still there, going insane trying to attack my dog through the fence! I don't understand people. There are rules there that not many follow. If a dog shows aggresion and bites or attacks another, they are suppose to leave and not return. The last few weeks, I've seen intact males come in that consistently attack other dogs unprovoked, dogs get bit, people get bit, and the person with a mean dog doesn't even correct their dog, let alone leave!! It really stinks that a few people ruin it for others. I have been taking my dog to that park for over a year a few times a week. It is a 30 min drive, so it's no fun to get there and see her get attacked or bullied, and I'm the one leaving instead of the aggressor. Sorry for the long rant. I just don't understand how people can think it's ok for dogs to act out like this. If it were children on a playground, you woudn't allow bullying or fights, so why at a dog park is it any different? SMH

I used to take my dog to the dog park almost every day. but then we had a couple of run ins with other dogs that were way to aggressive, to the point I had to grab a dog buy the throat & throw it as far as i could. found out after that the guy and his dog were responsible for attacking a few other dogs. since then every time my dog seances a dog that is not to friendly she comes straight back to me & stay on my heal because she knows i will protect her. I think that people should have to take a some sort of class or course to be able to own a dog. to many people get dogs for the wrong reason.

Very good points this lady brings up. She's got my attention and I now agree and would not go to a dog park. Especially when she talks about putting a muzzle on and going in that park.

The problem at the dog park is the dogs owners... i go to the dog park almost everyday, my dog love it a lot, half the time i am alone if not its with frendly dogs, yes it happens once that like you said the first time the dogs was running non stop after my dog (because he wouldnt let the others smell him) i had to leave before he get hurt. But that stopped when i started to get in the park with his leash on to let the the dogs smell others butt :) after 30 sec or so i unleash him and he goes and play with the other dogs. After seeing the same dogs at the park he feel confortable and he just cant wait to play hith his frnds. You should see him when he knows that we are going at the park, he is so happy. going at the dog park was one of the best thing that happend to him.

This is the second time I've heard this from a trainer, and I'm so glad to hear it. My dog is CRAZY about toys, and for some reason people not only bring lots of toys to dog parks but they think it's okay to just casually toss them about like it's no big deal! My dog steals toys and runs around with them, and has been attacked by other dogs when she steals them. This in turn has made her attack other dogs if they go near a toy of hers (I bring a frisbee to throw if there is no one else around.) It has been a disaster so I no longer take her, I just wish I hadn't set her up to fail so badly. Now, we go to a secluded dog park that no one seems to know about where I play frisbee with her. If I ever see any one else there I usually leash her and we go, I just don't want to set her up anymore. The sad thing is, for a long time I thought this was a behaviour that I would have to find a solution to, then I realized that it's the environment more than my dog... she's otherwise a loving, smart, obedient dog.

lmdavtube Teach your dog a leave it cue. I have one here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJeZZ3h7r6igaNE .OVER teach this behaviour. Work on it multiple times a day. Then stand outside a dog park and work on leaving the fun things. Use a ball and throw it, ask the dog to leave it while holding the collar or having the dog on the leash. There are lots of ways to work on this behaviour (a very easy one too). Just takes time and patience.

I've never heard a dog trainer say dog parks are a good thing (or at least the positive reinforcement types of trainers). Mine definitely wasn't into them, and we don't go to them.

As a trainer, I have to agree that, for most dogs, dog parks are not great. For very social dogs that really really like other dogs and playing in a physical way, they can be OK, but most owners don't know how to tell. Day care, same thing - most dogs are tired at the end of the day from STRESS, not from having a great time! Not many are run by trainers actually supervising the dogs, but those would be the only ones to try. In fact, for most dogs, once they reach adulthood, the desire to play with unfamiliar dogs is not very keen. You're much better off with a few close doggy friends that your dog likes making a play date of their own. Or, better yet, a nice game of fetch or a good jog...

Completely agree with everything you said. Hense why I said reputable daycare, lol. At least with a good daycare they should be able to tell when a dog is having fun or stressed and remove the dog if need be (controlled). I completely agree with playdates, it's how I raised Mookie, learning from my lesson at dog parks with Luna.

My dog used to be a really happy pup who got along with all dogs. He's my first dog so I didn't understand the warnings until it was too late. After about a year of taking him to a dog park almost daily, he was trampled by a dog much bigger than he and he snapped and barked. Not enough to hurt the other dog, just to show that he was scared and wanted to stop. The owner of the other dog kicked him and now he's super sensitive to strangers and strange dogs. It's gotten to the point where if I stand still for a moment on a walk, he will try and attack anyone who passes by. I'm working to fix this and he warms up to dogs and strangers really quickly but the initial greeting is very apparent fear driven aggression.

+Greg R I admit I wanted to hit her. But I knew it would only cause more trouble and I didn't want to get arrested so I picked up my dog and called her a disgusting human being. she told me to discipline my dog because he was "obviously" poorly trained. If I got trampled, I would have yelled and hit back too. Any being that values their life would.

You rule Kristin ! There's no one video of yours that is not compelling ! I'm getting a Whippet, and by God, I would never take him to a mismatched, bully, unstable, over-driven environment while I'm trying to instill calm assertive behavior...I agree with you: for a Whippet - in particular -I can cause long term behavioral damage or undermine his personality. Sorry bud, long walks, jogging with me and tons of cuddling at home will have to suffice !

I see your points, but I believe the dog parks here in Denmark is very different. And we don't really have doggy day cares. I have NEVER seen a dog with a mussle here and the owners are, for the most part, very responsible. What I hate is the inattentive kids just playing pokemon go who's not watching their dog. I avoid the park when I see them.

I feel the same way. I hate the way that people do not watch and correct their dogs behavior. When I do go to the dog park, I carry a mace gun, a stun gun, a cable switch and a bully stick. So far, I have not had to use any of these devises. But, you can damn well bet I will not hold back if needed.

DOG PARKS ARE INTER AT YOUR OWN RISK I VISIT A DOG PARK FOR THE FIRST TIME AND OH MY GOD I WAS EXCITED TO SEE SO MANY BREEDS OF DOG BIG AND SMALL AND ALL COLORS. WELL I WAS STANDING IN THE DOG PARK TAKING PHOTOS AND THE DOGS WHERE RUNNING AROUND AND PLAYING AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DOGS RAN IN BACK OF ME AND I GUESS A BIG DOG OF 100 LBS RAN RIGHT IN TO ME IN MY LEFT LEG IN BACK OF MY KNEE HITTING SO HARD. I SCREAMED WITH PAIN OF A 10 AND HOP TO THE LOG TO SIT DOWN PAIN RUNNING UP AND DOWN MY LEG. TWO LADIES CAME UP TO ME AND ASK IF I WAS ALRIGHT? I SAID NO I HAVE PAIN UP AND DOWN MY LEG AND COULD NOT MOVE. WELL THEY WENT BACK AND SAT DOWN. I WAS SO MUCH IN PAIN SO I JUST STAYED UNTIL I TRY TO WALK AND IT WAS SO PAINFUL TO GET TO THE CAR MY GRANDSON HELPING ME AND WE HAD OUR GERMAN SHEPHERD WITH US. I WAS NOT ABLE TO WALK CAUSING PAIN. HAD X RAY THANK GOD NOTHING FRACTURE. IT TOOK AROUND 4 WEEKS TO FULLY RECOVER. DOG PARKS ARE NOT SAFE WHEN YOU DO NOT KNOW THE DOGS OR THE PEOPLE THAT HANDLE THEM. STAY AWAY FROM THE DOGS WHEN THEY ARE RUNNING AND PLAYING AROUND. I DID NOT KNOW WHO BELONG TO THE DOG OR DOGS OR WHAT DOG IT WAS. I DIDN'T MAKE A CLAIM BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS MY FAULT. I FOUND OUT THE ALL DOG OWNERS ARE AT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DOGS. I WILL BE ALERT.

I found out the hard way that dog parks are a horrible thing...I had my current dog for a couple months at the time, he had no training whatsoever. As soon as I let him off the leash he bolted. He wouldn't come when called, ran around like an idiot at breakneck speed & run into other dogs. I quickly found out he was a bully - he would just pick random fights with other dogs and after your explanation I can see why - you don't know the background of the other dog, where it came from and the training techniques used. Even though my pup is trained now I still would never bring him back because he is very fearful and will defend himself if a strange dog gets too close - I just don't want my dog or the other dog to get hurt. I have stayed away ever since.

My Weimaraner after years of training was attacked by a cocker spaniel, she was badly bitten because she is a submissive dog. Now she is usually scared of dogs. We have to start over again.
