We just got a high tunnel from Growers Solutions last month. It's almost complete. We live in in Maryland and I can't wait to grow through the winter. The difference between a high tunnel and a greenhouse isn't whether you grow in the grown or not, the difference is heat, a greenhouse is heated and a high tunnel is usually not. I am having raised beds in my high tunnel and containers. My husband is the retired electrician that reminded you to put your wire closer sets in your new barn panel. ❤️ We are regular watchers and can't wait for the high tunnel build.

I don't have room for a large structure and live in North Carolina, so we have a decent growing season. However, I saw an article in Mother Earth where a man in Maine was using strawbale cold framing inside an unheated greenhouse to start plants and grow greens all winter. The bales were arranged in squares with dirt/potting soil in the middle and a wood frame covered in plastic to retain the heat from the rotting straw bales.

Al, Gina, Tunnel talk. You may need a barn raising to help with the plastic. The tunnel I have is 5m x 2m. I anchored it and the cover into the ground. I also put 6 fence posts inside and attached the uprights with cable ties to the posts. The tunnel has stood in 60-70mph gusts. Funnily enough, this year I will be helping my friend Franco erect a heavy duty polytunnel on his allotment. There will be three of us to do it. Just have to be allowed out of isolation. The tunnel is an interesting development for your farm. Regards Stephen.

yay! I've been waiting for this video since the hints began! We purchased a small (13x42, 3 ft spacing between hoops) high tunnel frame last August. We took it down in the pouring cold rain, and stored it at the farm over the winter. These past few weeks we've worked on the site and a couple of days ago pounded the first long side of posts (15) into the really "resistant" ground. My 60+ year old husband really got a workout putting them in 3+ feet down! If the weather cooperates, we'll do more this week. I haven't ordered the wiggle wire and plastic yet so still have that expense. Really going to love watching you think through and installing yours!

Plus you are the jack of all trades, always stashed with the right tools and how tos for the job. There is nothing you can’t do! I love it! Your family brings me true joy. From all the research I have done, I would recommend raised beds for your high tunnel. The soil warms faster in a raised bed and with your soil issues I think you would be way ahead by doing it. You can still get frost inside your high tunnel just so you know if you have a frost coming and plants, you will need to cover the plants.

A couple in Alaska have a high tunnel & they have an abundance of vegetables + more. Talk about short growing season, they also made an earth bag root cellar for optimal storage of their harvest. If you want to speed up your cold frames heating up put a layer of black plastic over the soil and then add a covering of clear plastic bubble wrap over it. The black plastic will increase the solar heat gain and the Buble wrap will add insulation while not inhibiting the solar gain.

@dianehall53454 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, I appreciate your input. My friends have two high tunnels in Maine and the sides roll up from the bottom. When I was visiting the temperature was over 100F inside. So bees galore. I don't have a high tunnel as yet, so not sure of how many ways they can be managed. I do know there are hybrid bumble bees that pollinate inside. I'm working on a project, in conjunction with the University of Maine bumble bee census, to bring in native N.H. bumble bees to our 350 acre farm gardens. I managed to get three varieties to show up and stay. If I use non pollinated vegetables, I feel like I am contributing to the bee population decline. I am an organic gardener.

Olivia could use a step in front of the brooder door. The barrier board only allows her a toehold of a few inches as she climbs in. Easy to slip off with wet boots. High tunnel will be amazing. If you put a potting bench and seed starting area in you can call it whatever you want. If you are planing on cabbage, broccoli, etc. you might want to screen your ventilation openings .Exclude cabbage moth and other insect pressure and easiest if put in at the start. Besides letting you folks sit out there without mosquitoes. Just a thought.

So I have been building greenhouses for the last few years. The biggest problem with these greenhouses is our climate. The times these greenhouses would be most useful to us is when there is still threat of snow. A similar greenhouse to this one I put up in Maine two years ago we had to replace last year because the owner put it up when he thought it was safe and a freak snowstorm and just 7 inches of wet snow cause it to collapse. Make sure you pick a calm day to put the poly up.

Are you going to put raised planting beds in the high tunnel? It'll be easier than working off the ground. Plus a couple of suggestions; 1) put hooks in the sugar maples to hang the bucket handles on to prevent the wind from blowing the buckets away and losing sap, and 2) always rig up chains with the heels to the inside and the toes to the outside to prevent stretching the hooks with heavier loads, plus you won't damage the safety latches.

A high tunnel is a cold frame - which is unheated. A greenhouse is typically heated. You can grow in the ground, in raised beds, in pots or on benches in either one. Living Traditions Homestead has two similar to yours and Laura at Garden Answer and one that they've made look more high end. LTH has raised beds and pots in theirs, Laura at GA uses a gravel floor and benches. Both work great for what they're using them for.

I've heard of tunnels being "heated" by a couple of rich compost bins - not just straw, but greens and kitchen scraps. Don't know how effective it would be if the tunnel is too high, but couldn't hurt. Looking forward to seeing this produce this season. And, btw, Gina is a keeper. Anyone willing to overcome her aversion to ladders that quickly. . . . yeah.

Definitely poly tunnel here in the UK regardless of size. A green house is a more elaborate and usually permanent structure glazed with glass or in some cases rigid poly carbonate. You will need a good thermometer to keep an eye on the interior temperature when the sun does shine they can get hot enough to check or even kill any crops. A friend who has been growing various vegetables in one has a recording digital thermometer for minimum and maximum temperature . Quite often has to leave the ends open 24/7 during hot weather. As hers is in a small field she has problems with mice entering and nibbling growing crops. Good bio housekeeping is necessary to prevent bugs and mould etc gaining a foothold.
