One of the most popular folk, pop songs of the sixtys written by Bob Dylan- Don't Think Twice it's Alright" is taught here , and in this series we are going to accommodate beginners, intermediate and advances guitarist with renditions that are both for vocal accompaniment and solo fingerstyle.
This particular lesson taught by Bob Harris, is a prelude to the original rendition, using easier one and two fingered chords in place of more complex chords. Beginners who are endeavoring to learn fingerstyle guitar will appreciate the simplicity of this lesson, and also enjoy the melodic sense of the substitute chords and simple arrangement to this classic song.
In this video,we are going to learn some key points that many aspiring singers/vocalist will really benefit from. Key one with guitar and vocal is to be 'well rehearsed with your guitar part. In this lesson, perhaps many of you are not quite ready for fingerstyle and vocal. Step on is to at least get you playing guitar, in order to have the opportunity to sing sing and play at the same time. With this easier than fingerpicking fingerstyle strumming technique (called Clawhammer guitar, an aspiring vocalist will have an easier time trying to sing and play along with the guitar. It's important that you at least have some sort of ability to do both if you are not ready for the more difficult fingerstyle and vocal performance.
Then next key improvement is understanding "vocal phrasing" or timing as instructor Bob Harris calls it.Vocal phrasing simply can take a not so good singer, and greatly improve one's overall sound by singing in a groove. Bob instructs you to listen and see if you can hear the variations he gives with the vocals, and even comment below in the KZbin video if you "can hear the difference" in the vocal performances.
This lesson also is of great help of you endeavor and/or struggle to find your "vocal key" for a particular song. If singing "Don't Think Twice is Alright is your goal (along with fingerstyle guitar which is what Bob Dylan did when he recorded this song). than this lesson three of the series of "Don't Think Twice It's Alright Guitar Lesson Easy Fingerpicking will be a welcome help.
Finally, Bob leaves you with more helpful tips and his well regarded
"play along" sections, for both fingerstyle and easier clawhammer.
Much attention is paid to the vocal part, as Bob shows where the "near exact" vocal phrasing Bob Dylan performed on his famous 'Don't Think Twice it's Alright" recording.
Take this lesson, learn these chords, and practice with the free material that's included such as sheet music and tab, tux guitar and personalized help by signing up on Bob's VIP guitar group list.
Lesson 2 will continue with going over the basics, and lesson 3 will focus in on the same arrangement Bob Dylan used. A fourth and fifth lesson is going to combine rhythm and melody for a solo guitar instrumental.

Hey Don, yes, memorization definitely is needed on the guitar for sure. And of course the more you can memorize with the singing, that helps as well. I think the less you have to think about it... that's the goal. Just take a measure or two to begin with... that's my best advice and what I usually do. Best to you and your guitar (and your voice!!). bob

Hi there Bob. Boy talk about good timing I'm working on some boom chuck songs with alternate base notes. I really appreciate the singing part - I'm not much of a singer and this is going to help me get a handle on this. Looking forward to rest of these lessons.

Hey Ian, I'm not much of a singer either but paying attention to the vocal phrasing has helped me not sound so much like a bad singer.. The boom chick is just a good thing to know.. (Andy Griffiths style of guitar) and Lester Flatt (bluegrass legend), that is with the fingers and not a pick. The next lesson planned with with Dylan's chords he used which is what Larry played. Then it's off to melody and rhythm (no singing). It's not as difficult as you would think. I think Larry is going to have an arrangement for this and I have one too with the easier chords. I will need a vacation after this song!! ha ha.. Thanks again Ian, it's always a pleasure to hear from you my friend!! bob

Good morning Bob. This is absolutely perfect for me. With out realizing it that is what I do when learning a new song. I love to sing along and then the chords fall into place and then do the fingerpicking to see if I can do it that way too. This is such a good video for me. Thank you so very much. I usually sing without the capo, but going to try to sing it with the capo on. Have a great day and talk soon

Yea, I think C might be too high for you (no capo, 1 octave up like I show in the video) from what you showed me with your voice.. The only tough part is those low notes (if in you don't know by now). That's probably how you should gauge your key for this song..

This is a long video I think worth watching if you can't sing and play at the same time. My first initial feeling is many people need to just take things in small sections, and try a couple measures or a phrase. The good thing about this song is there's a lot of picking in between the vocals and this gives a lot of time (or a fair amount) to think about your next move. The only downfall of this song is the phrasing is a little tricky but I highly recommend just to do your own thing with the timing, but, try at least to see which of the 8 beats per measure your vocal is landing on and try to do it that way consistently. You can simply snap your fingers and start singing and hear which beats the words land on... all small sections. This song may be a work in progress for a bunch of people here but like anything, if you do it... it will come...

Hi Bob, I guess you are wondering how are your students going... Singing and playing is more challenging than I thought and even impossible until both hands were in autopilot mode in all the chords. I tell you my "strategy"...: first I created a playlist of about twenty famous interpretations. Several times a day I listen to it in loop to imbibe myself the melody. Then I play the song (with Tux or any cover in backtrack) but only the pattern 5342 or 6342 by muting the strings while humming the melody. So I can focus on the vocal part while the right hand does its job independently. The next step will probably adding one chord at a time without muting the strings. We'll see...

Hi Viv, You always have a very well organized and scientific approach to the guitar which I admire so much. You are an example of a person that will keep trying new methods to get from point a to point b, no matter what it takes. Many times, more effort is needed, and many times it takes less... but no matter what, the enjoyment of the journey is (as you know) the important part (this is the love of guitar and music). I think the way you are doing this (with the humming of the melody while playing) is a great idea (wish I thought of that!!

AWESOME!!! I love this song!!! Bob I got good and bad news, start with the bad... my Hi E string and B string busted on my guitar. Our 7 month old puppy went to jump up onto the couch and she got the guitar. Luckily when they snapped it JUST MISSED her....thank god it did not get her. ( I’ll now be way more responsible ) I am using it so often that I always just set it beside me. It practically has its own comfy spot on the couch lol... the good news is ( no one got hurt of course ) and also, I GOT ALL BRAND NEW STRINGS and for a great price with a nice cleaning. Turns out the guy in the guitar shop new my grandpa and I didn’t know it but he was at my grandpas service for the funeral. I bought some thumb picks too. Now I’m over here all feeling like a real guitar player haha 😎 but yeah I talk to him and told him those strings were to hard to press anyways so he put them on in such a way that it takes minimal effort to press them down. I’ll upload a video soon to show you the sound of it. Hope all is well, my thoughts are often with you Bob, every time I’m out doing errands or something I’m constantly just wishing I could get home quick to start playing along :) thanks for the video bob always appreciate you my friend :) You’re pal - Richard

Hey Richard, that is a great idea.... and there's some cool news coming out soon about a similar platform here on KZbin that I'm going to try to get going. KZbin is far more advanced than Facebook- not even close. The big difference is KZbin listens to it's creators. That's the whole thing as far as I'm concerned.. I just got to find some extra time to do all this stuff!!!! My studio and gigs have been very busy lately. I'm producing 9 album projects doing gigs and taking care of mom too and responsible for everything here. Big nut to crack so I have to work hard to make ends meet. But it's all good, my mom is a sweetheart and someone that saying no to is impossible.!! .

Hey RW, thank you for the kind words (not a fan of my voice but had to sing for this lesson). Most of the people over here are beginners so I did take that into consideration because I believe Bob did it differently too (good ears). The pickin part he alters as well but I kept it static. Thanks RW, I should be back soon with some more videos- bob
