Markus has really changed my views on a lot of things. About photography, life, and the kind of person I aim to be. I trust what he says in his videos because he easily backs it up and he comes from a good place. While other KZbinrs make claims based on affiliate links that fill their pockets, Markus gives gear away and asks nothing in return. I don’t have a lot of gear but I love photography and it’s what I truly want to do with the rest of my time on earth. So Markus I appreciate the help and truth you speak and I hope to one day shake your hand and tell you how much we love and appreciate you and your wife and the good work you do. Hope you’re enjoying the summer

Last year I was asked to perform some "photo magic" with kids jumping and being caught in mid-air in the photo, with the sun behind them. It creates a great effect, but you have to overcome the sun because you can't bring the kids right up to the flash. I had two dual cold shoe mounts, put two flashes in each one, and set them all up with my remote trigger (I do like Flashpoint Products). The kids got into their Wizard and Witches outfits, we had them jumping in the air as I took the shots, and with the sun creating a great backlight it looked outstanding. I have done these several times for the local performing arts schools since. I did have to use HSS, but I had plenty of light available, but you are right in that I have noticed Stop losses of light with HSS in what would be for normal or less demanding conditions as in a model or product shoot. Keep up the suggestions and ideas, every day is a learning day (By the way I also now have a new Garden Box out back with my extra light stands, a tripod, and several sandbags. I no longer have to carry all the stuff in and out of the house ! Great suggestion in the last video for filming up on the roof).

2:59 I think you actually get partial power of your HSS flash because half of your flashes' power is hitting the curtains while without HSS, the single flash hits the full sensor. At high shutter speeds, only a tiny fraction of the sensor is exposed at a given time, so for each flash most of the light is wasted by exposing the curtains.

great video Markus, one small correction I believe you would need 4 Speedlight's to actually get 3 times the amount of light.(3 speedlights would only give you 2.5x the light..) in regards to getting brighter light by moving the light 1 or 2 feet closer to the subject this would only be more applicable the closer the light is from the subject, if for example the light is 20 feet from the subject, moving it 2 feet closer will not change exposure by more than 1/4 stop..

I was taking pictures yesterday and ran into a problem I don’t understand. I set my background exposure 1.3 stops under, took a picture and perfect, I put the trigger on the camera and set the flash to its lowest setting, took a picture and the shot was massively over exposed, almost all white. Not sure how this happened, any ideas? I was on the beach and using a softbox in the middle of the day.

Hi Markus, biig fan of your videos and you “no nonsense approach” to many issues within photography. I’m of course using Godox for sunshine photography but I fail to understand how ND filters could be better than HS. If you put a ND filter on you lens you also reduces the power of the flash since it has to travel the same way as the surrounding light - how can this be an advantage. I fail to understand the logic in your proposal - are you able to explain fairly simple what I’m missing (not understanding) ??
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix Жыл бұрын
Getting more power from flash means not using HSS which means staying at or below the cameras maximum sync speed, which is usually around 1/160 or 1/250. So if you want that nice blurry background, that means shooting at f1.8 . If your lens is wide open shooting at 1/200sec, you will be way overexposed unless you use ND filters. Of course you could shoot 1/200 at f22 and not need ND filters, but then you wouldn't have a nice blurry background. The camera exposure is the same either way... but not using HSS means your flash puts out more power, so the foreground is brighter.
@Old00Farth
@Old00Farth Жыл бұрын
@@MarkusPix - I think I have found the reason/explanation, which you should probably have put into your video (which is already utterly good/perfect) - reason why the flash delivers more power at full flash instead of HSS is because the recharge of the flash which is less when trying to do HSS instead of on single strobe ... Only a few others trying to explain the difference between ND filtered/HSS flash actually explains this logical reason for the difference. So here it is.... Great fan of your videos and work which is shared in my network each time you post a "nuggets of gold" which happens more and more frequently. Thanks Markus

At the beginning of your clip, when you are explaining of 1st and 2nd shutter curtains, you forgot to talk about the shutter speed factor and its effect, for a better understanding of your audience and why there is some speed on every camera, say 1/60 on old film cameras and say 1/250 on modern ones that are called flash synch speed, below which every speed is fine coz the film/sensor plate is gonna expose for even more time than the second curtain can come to covers!

Fuji X100 series are the same. Or a medium format camera with a leaf shutter lens. Then the issue becomes making sure the flash duration is short enough that it all "fits" within the shutter speed.
@winnegehetoch
@winnegehetoch Жыл бұрын
@@HellbellyUK I have no first hand knowledge of the Fuji, but I take your word for it. It sounds reasonable. The shutter speed is rather flexible in real life on the LX100. Even with the really feeble standard accessory flash of the LX100, you first run into real and clearly visible (due to plain lack of power) trouble at 1/4000 sec. Most cases at 1/2000 sec work, and if you limit your shutter to 1/1000 sec, there are scant a problem (at least I haven’t seen them - not to say, they couldn’t be provoked in some circumstances, I haven’t tried). The good thing is, that 1/1000 sec freezes most movements, and the faint flash has a short reach, so the background quickly enters into black. Not like my big, powerful Canon Speedlites, that easily illuminates not only your target, but huge parts of the room to boot (feels like a potential reach of - at least - a gazillion miles 🤪). I often use the little LX100 critter on travels, for available light use, and where movements are involved, even the feeble attached flash comes handy, if use is allowed Lately I’ve experimented with allowing higher ISO’s, than usual, and then letting the DxO Deep Prime loose on the result. Not perfect, but amazingly versatile 😱

I really need to understand this . So let’s say your eyes are the sensor, And the flash is firing at full power, But you have sunglasses on now ( ND ) You still gonna see less light from the flash. So naked eyes with less flash power isn’t it the same as full power with sunglasses on ? Can you break this down clearly please. Thank you and we love you you are the best 🙏 I guess this work for flashes or cameras that doesn’t have HSS
@EliFleming
@EliFleming Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if this addresses your question exactly but as I understand it, yes you will see less light with your sunglasses on. However, the difference between your eyes and a camera lens is that you can open up your lens more to compensate for the ND. You can’t “open up” your eye’s iris past a certain point. FWIW your eye is at approximately f2.1 in total darkness and f8.3 to f11 in sunlight. In any case, the ND allows you to crank up the power of the flash but still achieve shallow depth of field. If you didn’t have the ND, you couldn’t have the lens wide open (to get that shallow depth of field) without over exposing your shot. You might think you could just increase your shutter speed to compensate but the flash happens so fast and is so powerful in comparison that shutter speed doesn’t have any effect except on ambient lighting around the subject. Does that help?
@dorythomas1816
@dorythomas1816 Жыл бұрын
@@EliFleming yes Eli I understand that the reason behind all this whether it’s the HSS or the ND is to shot at lower f stop to get a shallower depth of field But depth of field aside, We are talking about doubling the flash power . It’s true that the flash will fire at full power, But you have an ND now between you and the exposure. Thank you Eli Fleming I appreciate it
@HellbellyUK
@HellbellyUK Жыл бұрын
The way I always describe it is you're swapping stops of shutter speed for stops of aperture, and as far as the flash cares, stops of aperture and stops of ND are interchangable. So instead of of f11 1/200sec ISO100 No ND, you're at f1.4 1/200 sec ISO100 ND64 (which is 6 stops). As far as flash exposure it's the same exposure, and the ambient exposure stays the same as well.

High speed sync uses fast shutter speeds, in the thousandths, but non HSS requires a much slower shutter speed- usually around 1/200 sec because that's the fastest speed your camera will allow to sync (non HSS), and shutter speeds that slow will lighten your shot a lot, so to expose properly, you need to darken something, hence the ND filter.

@@MarkusPix unless I’m missing something, that’s what I was trying to say in the 4th and 5th paragraphs of my reply. @HellbellyUK summed it up more clearly than I did. Did you mean to reply to the OP?
