I'm surprised they didn't just pull out all the stops and sell it as the Hellcat. Which is an option still. People keep saying "LUL BRONCO RAPTOR WILL BE BETTER THAN 392 WRANGLER" not seeming to understand that the 392 Wrangler is nowhere near it's potential final form and we know for a fact that Ford's never going to V8 the Bronco. Hell these are the same people that turned a Neon into a 14-second car that could 0-60 in 5 seconds for no reason other than to say they did it. @@bonzobonanza The Pacifica is a transverse FWD platform. The engine bay cannot fit the SRT engine, transversely or longitudinally, without serious modifications. If they did it longitudinally, in addition to significantly enlarging the engine bay, there would need to be serious interior changes to accommodate a RWD transmission and driveshaft. If they mounted it transversely, that would still be way too much power for a FWD car, even haldex style AWD, FWD transmissions, and CV joints. Every other car they put the SRT engine in could handle its size and power without significant modification. It wouldn't be worth it to make all those changes just to sell 5-10k cars at most.

This may just be hearsay, but I remember reading a while back that the reason Dodge never made a convertible is because the LX platform just wasn't designed for a convertible and doesn't have the rigidity suitable for the lack of a roof. I know I've seen these conversion kits, but maybe it came down to frame warping over long term use or poor crash test results. I'm willing to bet the next generation is going to have a convertible option.

This is correct. The LX platform was originally designed as a 4 door platform for the Charger and the 300. Even just shortening the wheelbase and removing the B pillar required a bunch of extra strengthening and redesign. The Challenger is a uniquely bad candidate for turning into a convertible. Also, this is one of the reasons they focus of straightline performance. The chassis isn't well suited for road course racing.

They made the Comanche concept based on the small wide 4x4 platform that underpins the Compass, Renegade and Fiat 500x. They basically just took a Renegade, chopped off everything behind the front row seats extended the platform and added a truck bed and soft top, lifted it up and put it on I think 31 inch tires. It was a pretty cool truck and I'd hoped a glimpse into future plans from Jeep/Stellantis but it seems to have fizzled. Maybe with the success of the Maverick they might reconsider, I like my Renegade but I'd sure like it a lot more with a short truck bed on the back and 31 inch tires under it.

Unlike the X-Class pickup it would be all Mercedes, which would include an AMG version, which should put the focus on off-road performance. Also people in the US seem to be willing to pay much more for pick up trucks than any sane person would, like 100K+ for Raptors and TRX' I think Mercedes misses a huge, unexplored niche there. The 4runner is what the US landcruiser should have been, IMO. Basic interior but not 70 series basic or nobody will buy them, but with offoroad tech from the Land Cruiser and a reliable engine for about half the MSRP of the Land Cruiser. The Sequoia would have fit that description but it's a family SUV/minivan alternative at it's core. The Lexus GX doesn't count either because it's a luxury SUV.

Will never happen, but would love for Pontiac to come back as a true “enthusiast” division. Even if they had to come back as all electric vehicles it would be great to see them make a comeback. Would also like to see a performance Honda coupe to return and go against the BRZ and Toyota 86. Also how about a new version of the GMC Syclone and Typhoon? I can go on and on….

Honda needs electric S660, it's only sport kei car left, but it's too weak and you can't cram more than 1.0l petrol engine in there, so make it electric, it doesn't have to have big range, it would be like 1st gen electric Fiat 500, just a fun electric car for not a lot of money

Honestly, I would consult with Doug often as a manufacturer, he really seems to have a unique understanding of the consumer market. A lot of what he says seems obvious but only because he brought it up in the first place. Thats how you tell someone knows what they're talking about.

I feel like car companies need to have annual surveys to tally up the options most people want. Have it like a once a year even where all car companies take in their customers 2 cents. Instead of SEME/auto shows where they want to show future options that THEY think we want.

Doug, on the off road part, how did you miss the FJ Cruiser? Toyota needs to bring it back and do a jeep/bronco thing with the top and doors.

Doug, you missed one car that was great when we had little ones in DC: a Mazda 5. Don't know why you can't find a small sporty van anywhere. Could have made a Mazdaspeed version, would be fun to drive to the carpool line.

I would absolutely love a Mazdaspeed5. I have a 2007 and I think a fast one would be a riot. But I don't think there's any argument to be made for bringing back mini-minivans since Mazda stopped making it due to poor sales.

They also made the CX 7 which was a midsized SUV, but that also had poor sales due to a very weird styling.

The closest thing we have to a WRX wagon is the Levorg. It does exist, but I agree that it needs to reach more markets.

I think bringing the Toyota Hilux to the US would be a great Ranger competitor, or at least putting the Diesel engine into the Tacoma would be a great hit.

@@simongchadwick Yeah. My dad sold his 2003 Tacoma (which was in the family since it was brand new), with ≈170k miles for $13,500 and we are currently leasing a 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-road (manual) and my dad absolutely despises the thing. It gets, and I’m not even joking, basically the same gas mileage that the 2003 Tacoma we had got. And the engine, as my dad describes, “is a gutless P.O.S.”. He says he’d be fine with the gas mileage if the truck was faster, or if the truck didn’t get 13 MPG, closer to it’s “estimated” 17 MPG, and the engine stayed the same. Although I haven’t driven it yet, I can imagine what he’s saying is true.

I think you are all missing the larger point of what he was saying about VW. For the entire world outside of the US market, VW is a real player in the car business. I think most Americans would be shocked to learn VW is one of the world’s largest automakers because they can barely capture 2 percent of the US market. In the US they have a reputation for shoddy quality, poor reliability, lousy marketing, and complete cluelessness about what their brand identity is. VW executives are on the record for saying they don’t understand the American market at all. So what Doug is really saying is they have this history of building vans people liked and they walked away from the market completely and we’ve been teased here in the US for twenty years one interesting van prototype after another and this has been going on for TWENTY YEARS. Maybe the ID Buzz is coming soon to the US or maybe it isn’t. The point is why wasn’t it here a decade ago and why can’t VW seem to take advantage of opportunities that are obvious to everyone else? It’s just one misstep after another and it’s just such a dysfunctional company…honestly it’s a miracle they even have 2 percent of the market
