This show for me is Martha’s Vineyard Memories of the early 1970s where I and my brothers grew up, and where I first got my drawing lessons as a kid back in the early 70s. It was called “The Nature World of Captain Bob” but everyone always called it “Drawing with Captain Bob.” This show was on early mornings before school @6:00 AM on Channel 56 out of Boston where the show originated. Each episode you’d learn to draw a new animal of some type-mammals, birds fish, reptiles, insects, etc. Captain Bob had such a soothing way about him for kids. He was the Bob Ross of Children’s Television. I’d get up early to sit in front of the TV with my paper and pencil. When I’d get to school I’d compare my drawing with those of the other two Artist/friends of mine in my grade at Tisbury School, Peter Hatt and Jeffrey Sayer who were both excellent drawers and would watch at their houses. Incidentally, this show absolutely influenced the creators of “Spongebob Squarepants” with the theme music and nautical scenery. Anyhow, I was always amazed by Captain Bob and how he methodically created a cool picture that I too could make in less than 20 minutes, and always with some Education on Nature. II was having Crab Bisque tonight and was reminded of this show. Thanks for uploading. 👨✈️ ⛵️

That was wonderful. I did not know about SpongeBob! I used to do the same thing. My drawing were as awful as today. I would remember the facts. He is a good soul. Relaxing, and kind. I had an abusive childhood. But, this was a time I could feel some peace.

Fantastic! I heard a while back that the original broadcast tapes were destroyed, but hopefully that wasnt the case. Its terrific to see any of these episodes. Wish I had recorded a bunch of these when I had the chance, thanks for posting!
@PraxisPrepper3 жыл бұрын
Even if they weren't destroyed, being this old would make them difficult to run through a machine anymore as the plastic tape becomes brittle with the years. I remember this show very fondly as well!
@petermork9023 жыл бұрын
Old tapes can still run well, if you took care of them. The bigger problem is tracking them down, when few thought they were worth preserving. And don't think that attitude has changed.

We need more of these! I have been searching for years. All I remembered was part of the intro with the house, dock and water. I couldn’t remember what show it was! I thought it was on PBS Sunday mornings. I also remember the intro to have choppy water and looked very green. Does anyone know if the intro had changed at some point? Thank You! 👍🏻👍🏻

There were three Capt. Bob shows that I know of. The first was on weekday afternoons, on WHDH in Boston. He did some drawing lessons, and other features. It took place on a dock like the one seen in the opening here. "Mr. Answer"was a box with a face on it. Questions from the kids would be plunked in a slot on top, and he would come alive and answer them. There were also serial adventures featuring his characters Jasper and Gramps, that Bob would draw on a pad and narrate. Later he was host of a nationally-broadcast Saturday show, which alternated Jasper segments with Ruff and Reddy cartoons. Finally there's "The Nature World of Capt. Bob". Back then, WCVB did a lot of original programming for kids - no longer.

Thanks! I used to wake up as a small boy really early in the morning and watch this show. He taught me how to draw, and I loved it. I still have all the drawings I did from his shows. I've been searching for these to share with me nephew, somebody out there has to have all his episodes!

The show I remember was on WCVB Channel 5, early Sunday mornings right after station sign on (5:30 or so.) Late 70s - early 80s. The announcer would open with “From the islands of Maine…” He was born and raised in Brockton, around the same age as my grandfather, so there’s a chance they knew each other growing up.

I was actually on the Captain Bob Show as a child. As I recall... it was filmed on a Thursday afternoon and then shown on TV the following Sunday at 7a.m. I think there were 4 or 5 other kids besides myself on the show and we would compete for prizes. I won a prize (paint by numbers kit) for making the biggest chewing gum bubble. It was a learning experience seeing how they made a TV show. . As I was leaving the studio with my mother, they were filming the Bozo the Clown show in the next studio. Someone from that show asked my mother if I would like to be on that show too, and so I ended up being on the Bozo the Clown show. Sadly, the Bozo show was live, so I never got to see myself on TV. 😋
